  • Varada Open-Sources Its Workload Analyzer to Help Data Teams Optimize Data Lake Queries

Workload Analyzer gives data engineers holistic visibility into performance of Presto®  clusters, enabling resource optimization and improved service to business-wide users of Big Data analytics

TEL AVIV, Israel — February 2, 2021 — Varada, the data lake query acceleration innovator, today announced that it has open-sourced its Workload Analyzer for Presto, including both Trino (formerly known as PrestoSQL) and PrestoDB, making the source code available to everyone via Github. The Workload Analyzer is a free, easy-to-use tool that offers visibility into how Big Data and analytics workloads are performing, offering users insights into how to improve performance and optimize resources. Download the Workload Analyzer here.

“Presto democratized Big Data, exponentially expanding the number of business users that can ask questions to a Big Data infrastructure and enlarging the number of underlying data sources they can query,” said Ori Reshef, vice president of products at Varada. “But as the number of users within an organization grows, the challenge of DataOps teams is to keep queries running quickly, delivering results in a timely way so that those users can do their jobs. Unfortunately, DataOps teams are only able to get bits and pieces of the information they need to optimize resources from Presto itself. So Varada built the Workload Analyzer to give DataOps teams deep and actionable insights.”

The Workload Analyzer collects details and metrics on every query, aggregates and extracts information, and delivers dozens of charts describing all the facets of cluster performance. For the first time, data engineers have a holistic view of their cluster and can drill down into pain points to determine what queries to optimize and how. Download a sample Presto Workload analysis report.

The Workload Analyzer is compatible with PrestoDB and Trino. The Workload Analyzer script runs safely within the Presto cluster in the user’s Virtual Private Cloud (VPC), collecting and analyzing query statistics (JSONs). No data leaves the cluster and the tool does not require any external resources. The Workload Analyzer has already been tested on dozens of massive scale production clusters, resulting in zero impact on query performance.

Using the Workload Analyzer, data teams can:
    • Learn how resources are used on an hourly and weekly basis and define scaling rules

    • Identify heavy spenders and improve the pipeline
    • Improve predicate pushdown and significantly reduce IO and CPU
    • Identify “hottest” data
    • Improve JOINs performance
    • Provide a better production roll-out experience and identify upgrade risks upfront

“We’re already seeing this tool used in amazing ways,” said Reshef. “For example, one company is using it as a quality assurance tool for daily tests on large clusters. Another is using it for strategic planning to understand the best data sets to query for business users, while allocating resources effectively to significantly reduce costs. The number of use cases continues to rise.”

Presto: A Tool of Choice for Data-driven Companies
Presto is an open source distributed SQL query engine for running interactive analytic queries. Presto offers many benefits, most notably its ability to quickly run queries on a wide variety of data sources all at once, including ‘raw,’ unmodeled data. With this capability, as well as other unique advantages, Presto has quickly become a tool of choice for many significant data-driven companies.

The Varada Commitment to the Trino and PrestoDB Communities
“As part of our deep commitment to the PrestoDB and Trino communities, Varada decided to release a standalone, open source version of our Workload Analyzer tool so that any Presto user can evaluate potential performance improvements in their cluster,” said Eran Vanounou, CEO of Varada. “The tool will help PrestoDB and Trino users optimize their clusters on their own using their existing solutions. Of course, we anticipate that after discovering the existing inefficiencies within their clusters, many users will want to further evaluate how adding an indexing layer to PrestoDB or Trino can help them vastly improve performance. We will be more than happy to demonstrate how the Varada Data Platform can do just that.”

Varada leverages Presto in its innovative query acceleration engine, the Varada Data Platform. A big data infrastructure solution for fast analytics on thousands of dimensions, the Varada Data Platform became generally available in December 2020. Varada’s proprietary indexing layer runs on top of Presto, improving Presto’s query response time by x10-x100.

    About Varada
The Varada mission is to enable data practitioners to go beyond the traditional limitations imposed by data infrastructure and instead zero in on the data and answers they need—with complete control over performance, cost and flexibility. In Varada’s world of big data, every query can find its optimal plan, with no prior preparation and no bottlenecks, providing consistent performance at a petabyte scale. Varada was founded by veterans of the Dell EMC XtremIO core team, and is dedicated to leveraging the data lake architecture to take on the challenge of data and business agility. Varada has been recognized in the Cool Vendors in Data Management report by Gartner, Inc. For more information, visit: https://varada.io/

  • Delphix Accelerates YoY Growth Rate by Over 85%, Swings to Profitability

Digital Transformation Imperative Drives Need for API-First Data Platform

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Feb. 02, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Delphix, the pioneer in programmable data infrastructure, saw rising demand for its data delivery capabilities, as digital transformation took on new urgency with the pandemic in 2020. The surge in demand accelerated Delphix’s annual growth rate by over 85% for the fiscal year ending January 2021 compared to the prior year, pushing the company into non-GAAP profitability. Delphix also achieved a world-class Net Promoter Score (NPS) of 89 during the fiscal year ending January 2021.

Urgency around digital transformation programs are expected to continue over the next several years. To satisfy the demand, Delphix added senior executives in field operations, customer success, and sales with experience scaling to over a billion dollars in revenue.

“We helped companies around the world quickly expand their digital operations,” said Delphix CEO Jedidiah Yueh. “Cloud, DevOps, and AI/ML put enormous pressure on data delivery and the need for our API-first data platform.”

Over the last decade, code, networks, servers, and storage have all been automated by cloud and infrastructure vendors. But data has remained heavy, complex, and filled with security and privacy risk.

To achieve cloud speed and scale, enterprises need programmable data infrastructure—data that is automated, secure, and easily moved to anywhere it’s needed across the multi-cloud.

But digital transformation programs often starve for data and application environments, which can slow or derail transformation progress. Without data-ready environments, projects hemorrhage developer productivity, miss timelines, and overrun budgets.

Delphix’s data platform helps customers satisfy the data demands of transformation programs, with use cases including:

    • DevOps & CI/CD: Morgan Stanley uses Delphix to incorporate production-quality data into automated CI/CD workflows used by multiple application development teams, accelerating the delivery of new features for trading and booking applications.
    • AI/ML: JGC Holdings Corporation uses Delphix to automate the delivery of large volumes of data across multiple sources for AI/ML, giving data scientists and analytics teams the ability to better predict project outcomes, reduce project risks, and reduce plant costs.
    • Downtime Reduction: Michelin uses Delphix to reduce the risk of outages and the mean time to repair (MTTR) for critical systems that rely upon data and batch processing to optimize tire supply and delivery, saving millions of dollars a year in downtime cost avoidance.

An IDC study reveals that companies employing programmable data infrastructure increase revenue by an average of $15M, boost development productivity by 40%, and reduce infrastructure costs by 72%.

“At Delphix, we not only accelerate digital transformation programs, we also help customers protect personal privacy and data security,” added Yueh. “Our immutable time machine and data masking capabilities increase project velocity while reducing risk. It’s a win-win.”

    Delphix Growth Highlights

    Delphix customers now include:

    • 23 of the Fortune 100
    • Over 100 banks and financial services institutions, including:
      • 6 of the top 10 banks in North America
      • 4 of the top 10 banks in Europe
      • 9 banks across the Asia-Pacific region
    • 6 of the top 10 telcos in the world
    • 60 insurance and health insurance providers
    • 25 major retailers across the globe

During 2020, Delphix helped companies manage more than 2 exabytes of data, while accelerating releases for more than 20,000 applications. Delphix also helped businesses potentially avoid more than $1 trillion in data security and compliance risk associated with a growing list of regulations such as the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS), Brazil’s new General Data Protection Law (Lei Geral de Proteção de Dados Pessoais) (LGPD), etc.

“2020 has been a transformational year,” said Yueh. “Our team rose to the challenge, responding to the urgent needs of customers in over 27 countries. In doing so, we achieved both fast growth and profitability. Data has never been more important to businesses around the world, and we thank our customers and partners for their continued support.”

  • Bonitasoft Sets New Standard for Open Source Digital Process Automation, Delivering Innovation for Project Collaboration and Governance

New Bonita DPA platform delivers a unique combination of visual programming and coding capabilities for process automation teams

SAN FRANCISCO – January 28, 2021 – Bonitasoft, open source digital process automation company, today announced a significant milestone in the democratization of process automation technologies. To meet the growing need for seamless collaboration and governance between business and IT for process automation projects everywhere, Bonitasoft has open-sourced an unprecedented number of features in this major product release.

Process automation continues to present growing challenges for enterprises, and for the business and IT teams who are responsible for delivering automation projects. To meet the demands of mission-critical projects in today’s digital enterprise, full cooperation and IT-business teamwork all the way down and through the organization is more important than ever. However, the trend to low code solutions to allow more independence for “citizen developers” can take collaboration in the wrong direction, adding governance and maintainability issues. Establishing the rules and policies of corporate and project governance is a mutual responsibility, as is the implementation of “corporate guardrails” via technology in automation projects of all sizes.

With the Bonita 2021.1 release, Bonitasoft has unified development tools between open source and commercial editions of Bonita Platform to allow process automation teams and organizations to adopt and use open source technology that adapts to their individual project governance needs.

Bonitasoft offers an alternative to separating professional developer from citizen developer work, by including both visual programming and coding on the same platform. True collaboration from project conception to production, monitoring, and continuous improvement is now possible for process automation teams. This unique approach to low-code in a DPA platform allows professional developers to externalize the code and give them the freedom to continue to use their existing tools while ensuring a smooth collaboration and project governance with citizen developers that will leverage visual programming capabilities of Bonita.

Together with this major platform release, Bonitasoft also announces today brand-new “turn-key” services packages that are specifically intended to help speed up project implementation and production upgrades for process automation teams. These packages are built on top of the commercial edition of the platform, which already includes additional capabilities to secure, scale, monitor and continuously improve process automation projects. Bonita Enterprise – on premise or on the Cloud – is the ideal choice to get started rapidly with a first process automation implementation and to upgrade painlessly to the latest version of the solution.

“We want to boost process automatization adoption through the democratization of DPA, as we did 12 years ago with the democratization of BPM, and at the same time, greatly simplify upgrades and downgrades between the Community and commercial Enterprise editions of Bonita,” says Miguel Valdés Faura, Bonitasoft founder and CEO. “We were founded as a company on a commitment to open source, and we want anyone to be able to build an automation project on the Bonita platform.”

Bonita’s visual programming capabilities include process modeling using the BPMN2 standard, a graphical editor with guidance and auto-completion, a shared repository, and multiple options to define and enforce business rules, including ones intended to support project governance. Wizards and guidance windows help the business user with some technical configurations, including connectors to Salesforce CRM, UIPath RPA, SAP, multiple databases including Oracle, and more.

For developers, Bonita offers extensive coding capabilities through archetypes (coding patterns or templates) so they can fully extend the automation project by integrating Bonita with other enterprise information systems using REST and custom connectors, by customizing user interfaces, and more. This separation allows developers to code extensions outside of Bonita so development teams everywhere are free to use any development tools they already use, and are comfortable and efficient with, instead of limiting them only to the tools provided natively with Bonita.

In addition to the new Software Development Kits that allow developers to create and test extension points, Bonita users can now reuse and extend Bonita Portal in their applications. This end user interface has been split into two unique Bonita applications (User App, Admin App) that can be used as is or customized with the natively provided UIDesigner.

    About Bonitasoft

Bonitasoft fully supports digital operations and modernization of information systems with Bonita, an open-source and extensible platform for automation and optimization of business processes. The Bonita platform accelerates development and production with a clear separation between visual programming and coding capabilities. Bonita integrates with existing information systems, orchestrates heterogeneous systems and provides deep visibility across all enterprise processes.

  • Revenera Releases 2021 Findings on Open Source License Compliance

Report shows more extensive open source use than organizations disclose, paired with rapid growth in security vulnerabilities.

Itasca, IL – January 28, 2020 – Revenera, producer of leading solutions that help technology companies build better products, accelerate time to value and monetize what matters, today released the Revenera 2021 State of Open Source License Compliance report today.

The report analyzes data from 2020 audit services projects, evaluating the prevalence of open source software (OSS), the under-reporting of that use, and the resulting license compliance issues and security vulnerabilities. This global, cross-industry study by Revenera’s audit services team evaluated more than 2.1 billion lines of code and uncovered 174,334 issues.

“Open source software’s growing popularity is due in part to its ability to give companies accelerated time-to-market and provide more focus on core competencies for development teams. However, with that valuable opportunity comes risks that are often unknown and therefore not addressed,” said Alex Rybak, Director, Product Management, Revenera. “A continuous, automated open source management program is the best way to proactively monitor code churn throughout the development process and address any identified compliance issues, especially new security vulnerabilities—all while embracing open source for the strategic advantages it provides.”

Highlights of the Revenera 2021 State of Open Source License Compliance report:

    • Growing use of open source software increases possibility of risk. The average number of issues uncovered per audit project grew to 1,959, compared to 662 reported the previous year. This new 200 percent growth, year over year, was fueled by popular ecosystems including PyPI, NPM, RubyGems, and many others which are bringing in more dependencies into users’ codebases. Binaries—made up of a collection of compiled source code from various origins—grew 58 percent, year over year, with 1 issue discovered for every 12,126 lines of code.
    • Organizations face more risk than is disclosed. While 55 percent of the scanned codebase files were attributed to open source (an increase of 10 percent over the past year), only 4 percent of the issues uncovered through audits were disclosed in advance of audit start.
    • Security vulnerabilities are growing. Data from forensic and standard audits identified 89 security vulnerabilities per project, jumping from 45 in the previous year’s findings.
    • Critical license compliance issues require immediate attention. Priority 1 (P1) issues are those that pose the most critical threat and that should be remediated first. The team found 130 P1 issues per project, representing 5 percent of the total issues uncovered through M&A and baseline audit projects.
    • Multiple types of audit analyses are required to meet users’ needs. 37 percent of issues were identified through Standard Audit Analysis, which identifies explicit P1 licenses and large third-party components; 28 percent of issues discovered came fromForensic Audit Analysis, which provides an in-depth, deep level scan of all evidence types; and 34 percent of issues were identified through Targeted Audit Analysis, with custom audits based on customer need. Audit customers in 2020 expected faster turnaround times due to an increase in M&A activity.
    • Weak copyleft licenses are 20 percent of the scanned codebase. Weak copyleft licenses indicate that the software program is free to use. However, depending on whether it’s modified, how it’s linked, and how it’s packaged and distributed, there may be obligations imposed on organizations beyond simple attribution requirements. In some cases, weak copyleft requirements extend to all derivative works. Making up 63 percent of the codebase are permissive licenses, with minimal restrictions. Strong copyleft licenses, which mandate that any distributed software that links or incorporates such code be licensed under compatible licenses, represent 12 percent of licenses.

  • The Linkerd Project Announces the Creation of the Linkerd Steering Committee

Committee reinforces commitment to open governance and ensuring Linkerd meets the service mesh needs of current and future users

San Francisco, Calif. – January 28, 2021 — The maintainers of Linkerd, the world’s lightest and fastest service mesh, today announced the creation of the Linkerd Steering Committee. The committee will expand Linkerd’s stewardship to its end user community, reinforcing the project’s commitment to open governance and a user-centered roadmap. The first steering committee meeting will be in February and is open to everyone.

The creation of the Linkerd Steering Committee has been driven by the continued rapid growth of Linkerd. Over the past years adoption has soared, expanding to include large organizations like Microsoft, H-E-B, EverQuote, and HP as well as fast-moving startups like finleap connect, Subspace, and Clover Health. By formally representing the voice of the Linkerd user community, the steering committee will play a vital role in gathering, collating, and prioritizing feedback from users to ensure Linkerd’s roadmap continues to focus on solving concrete, immediate problems for current and future adopters.

“Linkerd is a unique service mesh. In a space that’s very prone to hype cycles and marketing-driven development, we’ve always put our users first,” said William Morgan, CEO of Buoyant, the creator of Linkerd. “The Linkerd Steering Committee extends this same philosophy, and will help us ensure that the needs of Linkerd adopters—who trust Linkerd to power mission-critical systems around the world—will continue to be at the utmost center of Linkerd’s evolution.”

Members of the Linkerd Steering Committee members are required to be current production users of Linkerd, and will be selected for, among other factors, significant operational experience with the project. Initial committee members include Chris Campbell, Cloud Platform Architect, HP; Christian Hüning, Director of Cloud Technologies, finleap connect; Justin Turner, Director of Engineering, H-E-B; and Wiliam King, CTO and Co-founder, Subspace.

All Linkerd Steering Committee meetings will take place publicly and recordings will be made available. For more information, please visit the Linkerd Steering Committee charter.
