  • Codefresh Taps Dan Garfield as Chief Open Source Officer, Strengthening Commitment to Open Source

The move is the latest of several strategic product and partnership decisions that have guided the company

Mountain View, Calif., February 9, 2021 – Codefresh, a software leader in cloud-native DevOps, often contributing to strategic open source projects, today signaled a strategic shift to put open source front and center in their company strategy. Dan Garfield, who joined founder and CEO Raziel Tabib to launch Codefresh in 2016, has been promoted to Chief Open Source Officer. Garfield previously led evangelism, community and marketing as Codefresh’s VP of Marketing and Chief Technology Evangelist.

In his new role, Garfield will lead the realignment of Codefresh as an open source company, with engineering time dedicated to open source contributions and providing enterprise solutions on top of open source projects for their customers.

While Codefresh is no stranger to open source, acting in the past as core-contributors to Helm and other projects like cloud native application bundles (CNAB), they are now reshaping their company strategy on heavy involvement in the open source community.

“We’re making a commitment to invest heavily in open source and continuous delivery. Dan has used his experience, creativity and insight to help us to exceed our goals as we transition from traditional CI/CD to a next generation, more GitOps CD focused platform,” Tabib said. “As Chief Open Source Officer, Dan can focus his seemingly endless energy and expertise on the engineering, partnerships, and tools that make software development and delivery consistent, efficient, and easy to use for engineering and operations teams.”

In November, Codefresh became a founding member of the GitOps working group with Amazon, GitHub, Microsoft, and Weaveworks as an open-source project under the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) to define a principle-lead meaning of GitOps to improve interoperability between tools. They also announced GitOps 2.0 that defines observability in software delivery as the key to delivering software faster.

Garfield is a full-stack engineer, GitOps Working Group maintainer, Google Developer Expert, member of the Developer Week Advisory Board, and a member of the Forbes Technology Council. As a Kubernaut and CI/CD expert, he has built tools for advanced deployment methodologies with Kubernetes, Helm, and Istio. His code and talks have been featured at conferences including Kubecon, Dev Week, Google Cloud Summit, SwampUp, Redis Conf, and more. His new responsibilities will include realigning core products around open source, organizing contributions, building communities, and evangelizing open source projects and user success.

“Being more active with our open source contributions and taking part in the community is critical,” Garfield said. “We believe we can go farther by building our platform in a more collaborative manner. My focus as Chief Open Source Officer will be open sourcing more code, improving our platform, and bringing more contributions to existing projects in the GitOps and Continuous Delivery space.”

Garfield will serve as interim VP of Marketing while the company actively searches for someone to take over the role.

  • Iteratively Raises $5.4 Million to Help Teams Rebuild Trust in Their Data

New Funding Led by Gradient Ventures, Google’s AI-Focused Venture Fund, to Expand Product Development by Doubling Down on Quality-First Approach to Analytics

SEATTLE–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Iteratively, a SaaS tool that helps data and product teams define, instrument and verify their analytics tracking, announces today that it has secured $5.4 million in new capital led by Google’s AI-focused venture fund, Gradient Ventures, with participation from Fika Ventures and early investor PSL Ventures. Zach Bratun-Glennon, Partner at Gradient Ventures, joins the board.

Iteratively takes a proactive approach to solving the problem of poor data quality, by helping teams ensure that data quality issues are caught before making their way into production. Solving and preventing issues proactively at the source means data consumers have high quality and trustworthy data that’s ready for use, with no cleaning required. This is significant since analysts and data scientists today waste up to 80% of their time preparing and cleaning data, leaving a minority of time for actual analysis.

Co-founders Patrick Thompson and Ondrej Hrebicek worked together at Ondrej’s first startup, Syncplicity (acquired by EMC), and spent six months doing extensive customer development before starting Iteratively in June 2019. They interviewed over 400 product managers, data teams and engineers, and found the number one pain point was the massive problem of bad data. According to Gartner research, poor data quality costs businesses in the U.S. more than $3 trillion per year.

Iteratively enforces a reliable source of truth for teams’ analytics and provides the first tool that brings product managers, data analysts and engineers together to collaborate on data. It offers an easy-to-use web UI for data analysts and product managers to define and evolve their tracking plan in a collaborative way, as well as best-in-class developer tooling for engineers to easily and accurately implement analytics tracking with type-safe, open-source SDKs, a CLI and CI/CD integration.

“We kept hearing the same thing from data and product teams that they have lost confidence in their analytics. We built a tool that helps them rebuild trust in their data and empowers them to collaborate on analytics. We believe data is a team sport and collaboration is key for cross-functional teams to succeed,” said Patrick Thompson, Iteratively’s Co-founder and CEO.

Iteratively serves a broad spectrum of customers but is initially focused on helping companies with existing product and data teams, such as SaaS, ecommerce and DTC companies. Iteratively fits seamlessly into teams’ existing data stacks and offers direct integrations with their infrastructure, whether that’s custom-built or third-party tools like Amplitude, Mixpanel, Segment, dbt and more. Customers include Box, Artifact Uprising and Beekeeper.

Charles Lariviere, a Data Scientist at Iteratively customer Dribbble, shared, “Iteratively has become the source of truth for our event collection and an integral part of our data stack. As a team, we’ve experienced great benefits from adopting Iteratively and clear improvements in data quality.”

“Iteratively’s software has a unique approach to enabling company-wide collaboration and enforcing data quality. Going forward, we believe that intelligent analytics and data-driven business decision making will differentiate successful companies and best-in-class products. Iteratively’s mission, product and team are poised to give each of their customers these capabilities,” said Zach Bratun-Glennon, partner at Gradient Ventures.

Iteratively will use the new capital to accelerate product development. The team will also make key hires within marketing, sales and customer success.

  • Jumpshot Sales Veteran Eli Goodman Joins Datos as Chief Executive Officer

The stealth global clickstream data provider has launched and is now available to customers globally

NEW YORK — Feb. 3, 2021 — Datos, a global clickstream data provider, is gearing up for success with a new CEO at the helm, sales veteran Eli Goodman.

With millions of opt-in panelists, the company’s main data solutions have recently launched out of private beta and are already being used by a select group of global companies to provide search, retail, video, and consumer journey intelligence. Datos has teamed up with online visibility management platform Semrush as an investor and partner. The Board of Datos consists of its three co-founders, Eli Goodman, Serge Jakovs, and Stan Korelchuk.

“Over the next year we plan to dramatically expand our panelist footprint and build Datos into a leading clickstream data provider,” said Eli Goodman, Chief Executive Officer of Datos. “The need for trustworthy, at-scale, privacy-compliant data is limitless, and our extensive experience in navigating this complex space is one of our most valuable assets.”

“At Semrush, we really appreciate the opportunity to work with professionals in their field, and we are glad that from this day on, together with Eli, we will have the opportunity to strengthen the position of Datos into that of a leader in the field of data analysis and marketing research,” said Eugene Levin, Chief Strategy Officer at Semrush. “We expect the knowledge and know-how that Eli brings to Datos will help develop the product and delight users and partners, providing even more opportunities in customer journey intelligence.”

Prior to Joining Datos, Goodman was the VP of Strategic Sales at marketing analytics company Jumpshot. During his time running the sales and partnership teams at Jumpshot, Goodman was responsible for driving over 20MM in annual revenue by early 2020.  His central focus was licensing clickstream data to the most sophisticated data engines on the planet, including, but not limited to, Institutional Finance, Market Research, Management Consulting, and Intelligence platforms of all kinds.

Before Jumpshot, Goodman served as the Senior Director of Sales and Media Evangelist for comScore, where he oversaw myriad sales and thought leadership functions.  As the Media Evangelist, he delivered well over 100 conference keynote and panel presentations during his 9-year tenure and was responsible for a meaningful portion of the growth of their public voice in the data space.

  • First FinOps Foundation Survey Shows Rise in Cloud Financial Management

Many companies rapidly adopting FinOps but are at the early stages of optimizing cloud spend
PORTLAND, Ore. – February 3, 2021 – Big growth is ahead for FinOps, the field of cloud financial management, as more companies accelerate their cloud plans, especially amid COVID-19, and struggle to contain and optimize cloud spend, new research indicates.
The FinOps Foundation, a non-profit trade association focused on codifying and promoting cloud financial management best practices and standards, recently surveyed over 800  FinOps practitioners from around the world with a collective $45 billion in annual cloud spend. Almost half of the survey respondents were from companies with 10,000 or more employees, indicating that large companies are driving FinOps adoption.
The survey underscores that FinOps is experiencing big growth but that there is much work ahead. Key survey findings include:
    • Nearly half of survey respondents (49%) had little or no automation of managing cloud spend—one of the core disciplines of a FinOps practice.
    • Of those with some automation, almost one-third automated notifications (31%) and tagging hygiene (29%.) Only 13% automated rightsizing and 9% spot use–which indicates that companies are likely missing opportunities to optimize cloud spend.
    • Half of compute spend on public cloud was for on-demand,  the highest-price service, and 49% for reserved, savings or committed use coverage, the next costliest option. Only 13% was for spot use, the least expensive service, even though respondents identified 28% as being an “excellent” target for that option.
    • Getting engineers to act on cost optimization was cited by 40% of respondents as the biggest challenge, followed by dealing with shared costs (33%) and accurate forecasting spend (26%.)
    • Just 15% of respondents said their FinOps practice was in the “run” phase of maturity, meaning they can continually improve a built out practice. Four in 10 firms are in the “walk” phase, with core processes running but with much maturing remaining, and 44% are in the  “crawl” phase and just getting to basics.
“The dirty little secret of cloud spend is that the bill never really goes down,” says J.R. Storment, executive director of the FinOps Foundation. “Smart companies use the cloud to move quickly and outperform their competitors. While agility is paramount, they also want maximum business value for the investment.”
FinOps is clearly an area more companies will invest in. The survey respondents predicted an over 40% growth in FinOps team size in the next 12 months.
By learning more about the challenges and opportunities facing FInOps practitioners, the Foundation, which just added Google Cloud as a Premier Member, can better create educational and informative content to help the community.
“The survey underscores that the challenges faced by large companies—cost, complexity of billing data, the changing nature of the cloud—are surprisingly similar to those faced by small companies,” Storment notes. “This supports the notion that developing FinOps best practices early on will pay huge dividends as cloud use and costs grow. The FinOps Foundation is perfectly positioned to help enable these best practices with our work in such areas as frameworks, benchmarking data, and certifications.”
For more survey insights, including around such topics of top challenges, team structure, capabilities, KPIs, and primary needs, access the report here.
