  • Yahoo Japan US Subsidiary Actapio Takes Cloud Native Approach to Upgrade On-Premise Infrastructure to Manage High Scale Web Workloads through Heptio Partnership

Partnership exemplifies YOY growth highlighted by scores of new customers and accelerated employee hiring

Seattle, Wash. ‒ April 23, 2018 at 6 am Eastern Time ‒ Today, Heptio, in collaboration with Actapio, a subsidiary of Yahoo Japan Corporation, announces Gimbal, an open source initiative to unify and scale the flow of network traffic into hybrid environments consisting of multiple Kubernetes clusters and traditional infrastructure technologies including OpenStack.

Gimbal removes obstacles for companies looking to adopt Kubernetes in their environments by routing high volume traffic into both Kubernetes clusters and existing solutions like OpenStack that often live side by side in the enterprise infrastructure. This cloud native solution is tailored for the highly dynamic nature of managing Kubernetes workloads, which expensive, existing solutions are not designed to do. By using Gimbal, companies can leverage the agility of cloud native systems to modernize legacy infrastructure, giving them faster time-to-market at reduced cost.

    The advantages of Gimbal include:

    • Cost effectiveness. Gimbal is a software solution that runs on commodity hardware and serves the same function as much more expensive purpose built hardware solutions. This creates a significantly more affordable solution for real world environments.
    • Simplicity and flexibility. Gimbal scales for multi-team Kubernetes clusters of all sizes with reduced complexity and increased reliability. Being API driven, it integrates easily with legacy and cloud native systems.
    • Cloud Native first; legacy friendly. Existing solutions were not designed to support dynamic, rapidly scaling cloud native deployments. Gimbal was built from the ground up to seamlessly integrate with Kubernetes and handle dynamic workloads. It also integrates with existing systems to create a unified traffic tier that can span new and old back-end systems.
    • Multi-cloud ready. Gimbal enables load balancing on any cloud on-premises, on cloud platforms where Kubernetes is deployed, and as a network across multiple clouds. It can serve as an alternative to cloud provided load balancers as a way to ensure that workloads are fully decoupled from the infrastructure they run on.

“We approached Heptio to help us modernize our infrastructure with Kubernetes without ripping out legacy investments in OpenStack and other back-end systems,” said Norifumi Matsuya, CEO and President at Actapio. “Application delivery at scale is key to our business. We needed faster service discovery and canary deployment capability that provides instant rollback and performance measurement. Gimbal enables our developers to address these challenges, which at the macro-level helps them increase their productivity and optimize system performance.”

“This collaboration demonstrates the full potential of cloud native technologies and open source as a way to not only manage applications, but address broader infrastructure considerations,” said Craig McLuckie, founder and CEO of Heptio. “Kubernetes is a natural starting point, but integrating it fully into the real world is still an evolving story. Systems like Gimbal help to pragmatically bridge existing systems and new cloud native infrastructure like Kubernetes. We have been thrilled to work with Actapio to look more broadly at traffic management.”

The Actapio implementation underscores Heptio’s business momentum since emerging from stealth in November of 2016. Backed by Accel Partners and Madrona Venture Group, the company saw revenue grow 140 percent from Q4 2017 to Q1 2018 ‒ part of its year over year momentum of onboarding scores of new customers. The company also quadrupled its employee headcount from Q1 2017.

Gimbal is currently in alpha and under active development. Heptio and Actapio look forward to working with the open source community to build a flexible system.

  • GuardiCore Enables Secure Rapid Container Deployment

GuardiCore Centra Security Platform Reduces Compliance Risks, Enforces Security Policies Within Containerized Applications and Workloads

SAN FRANCISCO and TEL AVIV, Israel, April 17, 2018 /PRNewswire/ — GuardiCore, a leader in internal data center and cloud security, today announced several new capabilities within the GuardiCore Centra Security Platform designed to help security architects visualize, segment, detect and remediate threats in containerized applications or workloads while maintaining development agility, application performance and scalability.

Leveraging its pedigree in data center and cloud security innovations, GuardiCore protects containerized applications, empowering DevSecOps teams with various critical capabilities without hindering speed or hampering creativity. The GuardiCore Centra Security Platform secures the production and operational elements of containers by enabling IT security teams to see every container, pod and service, visualize their communication flows and secure them with micro-segmentation policies, while also detecting attacks and demonstrating compliance at scale in any infrastructure without any performance impact.

“As enterprises race to shift their data and applications to low cost, highly agile and scalable cloud platforms, they are increasingly relying on containers to help fuel that agility and scalability. However, the lack of visibility into containers impairs their ability to secure applications and workloads in run-time/production environments,” said Pavel Gurvich, Co-founder and CEO, GuardiCore. “Just as virtual machines and virtual servers changed how security looks into and protects networks and servers, containers pose even more challenges for those charged with securing them. The addition of container-specific capabilities to GuardiCore’s award-winning cloud workload protection platform enables the modern enterprise to deploy containers as much as, and as fast as, they want, without sacrificing security. Applying the innovative capabilities of our platform to address specific security challenges presented by containers, GuardiCore provides the visibility and scalability enterprises and service providers need to enforce security controls, solve compliance challenges, detect, investigate and contain threats.”

Support for Container Security in Complicated Cloud Workloads

“Cloud workload protection platform vendors need to be able to provide visibility into containers and to distinguish and apply policies, based on individual containers, including network segmentation. This is an emerging critical requirement for organizations using containers to support microservices-style architectures and rapid DevSecOps workflows,” wrote Neil MacDonald, VP Distinguished Analyst, Gartner in the report, Market Guide for Cloud Workload Protection Platforms.

GuardiCore extends Centra’s real-time visibility capabilities to include containers, including the ability to fully incorporate container orchestration, metadata and the ability to leverage native pod labels. Security and application development teams can view communication flows down to the process-level within pods and deploy granular micro-segmentation policies to protect and control communication flows against attacks and misconfigurations. In addition, the platform provides the ability to detect threats within individual containers and, in the event a container is compromised, quarantine it and prevent the spread of the attack. With these added capabilities, GuardiCore broadens its already extensive platform support to include Docker, OpenShift and Kubernetes containers, providing an integrated solution for all data center and cloud environments.

Operationalizing Cloud Workload Protection and Micro-Segmentation

In addition to capabilities that secure containerized applications, GuardiCore is making available new features in the Centra Security Platform which enable enterprises and service providers to operationalize cloud workload protection and micro-segmentation. These features include role-based access controls and the ability to save, share and recall visualization maps. Role-based access control allows administrators to tailor the scope of access based on specific labels such as a business unit, business application or workload. Save, share and recall visualization maps allow security operations personnel to save commonly used maps of communication flows, saving time and effort, enabling collaboration, and accelerating incident investigation.

For larger botnets that threaten to overwhelm organizations’ apps and infrastructure through volumetric DDoS attacks, Akamai is deploying additional capacity to its scrubbing centers to mitigate the ever-growing volume of DDoS attacks that have been threatening digital businesses.” Akamai offers secure browsing and support for HTTPS everywhere with TLS 1.3 and unparalleled visibility into evolving threats and threat actors via enhanced security analytics.

Secure access in a Zero Trust era

As the traditional corporate security perimeter dissolves and enterprise applications move to the cloud, secure unified access and single sign-on have become an imperative. Akamai’s Enterprise Application Access is designed to enable IT and security teams to move towards a Zero Trust security architecture, while simplifying secure access and reducing the attack surface associated with cloud migration, the dissolving corporate perimeter, and an increasingly mobile workforce.

Fast, secure web and mobile experiences

According to data from Akamai’s Retail Performance Report, a two-second delay in web page load time increases bounce rates by 103 percent, and 53 percent of mobile browsers will leave a page that takes more than three seconds to load.

As application architectures evolve and digital applications become more complex, it is increasingly challenging for businesses to ensure consistently high customer experiences. Akamai’s newly-deployed features have enhanced its platform’s ability to monitor, optimize, and validate application performance with the addition of perceived performance, page construction, and application delivery metrics to its mPulse real user monitoring solution.

Once issues are identified, features inherent to several solutions are designed to ensure the integrity of application engagement and experience, including: the script management and resource optimization features of the Ion acceleration solution, digital asset optimization capabilities and support for the Brotli compression algorithm, Image Manager optimization, and network optimization capabilities in an enhanced mobile application performance SDK.

“Customer experience is critical for our business and we are excited to be working with Akamai to understand how web performance is impacting and driving our key business metrics across our many global sites,” said John Paris, Service Manager, Skyscanner. “We can now monitor and optimize the digital experience using actionable insights from mPulse RUM that help us prioritize fixes and enhancements that will deliver the most business impact.”

The intersection of DevOps and Security: DevSecOps

Additional new platform features address the need for infusing security into DevOps, as more enterprises work to find that balance between accelerated development cycles and the mindset that “security is everybody’s responsibility”. Akamai has added support for scripting to automate application security using its flagship web application firewall, Kona Site Defender, as well as improved management and versioning support for API protection. In addition, the Akamai API Gateway provides an integrated solution architected to accelerate, secure, and manage APIs, including the ability to expose, authenticate, and manage access to APIs to maximize revenue and prevent misuse and abuse.

Quality at scale for OTT Content and Advertising

Akamai continues to focus on bringing the quality, performance and reliability of traditional broadcast television to the Internet, while protecting pay-TV and OTT service providers, broadcasters and consumers from a growing number of cyber threats. Recent innovations in streaming media delivery, monetization and security include: Media Services Live, featuring liveOrigin™ functionality, which significantly drives down latency while maintaining exceptional video quality; its Broadcast Operations Control Center real-time monitoring and issue detection service; Dynamic Ad Insertion (DAI) capabilities to help scale addressable advertising; and security solutions designed to help ensure service and content availability.

“Building trust is at the core of Akamai’s offerings. Not only trust that we are delivering the highest possible performance for web or media content, but also that the content is secure against theft and disruption,” said Rick McConnell, President & General Manager, Web Division at Akamai. “As our customers digitally transform their businesses and meet the demands of their users for rich, high-quality content, Akamai is committed to helping them deliver an exceptional and secure experience.”

  • NeuVector 2.0 Automates Kubernetes Security Incident Detection and Response

Release enables enterprises to deploy Kubernetes with confidence by automating security and adding protection from new threat vectors

San Jose, CA – April 12, 2018 – NeuVector, the leader in Kubernetes security delivering the first and only multi-vector container firewall, today announced NeuVector 2.0. The enhanced security solution further protects Kubernetes environments by building on the unique NeuVector run-time security automation, which combines east-west traffic visibility with container process monitoring and vulnerability scanning. NeuVector 2.0 adds important new capabilities that include a Kubernetes incident response system alongside advanced process and file system protections to secure against new attack vectors.

NeuVector 2.0 will be available for demo at RSA Conference 2018 in San Francisco, April 16-20 (booth #4910).

Enterprises require fast and decisive responses when security incidents and potential attacks occur within Kubernetes deployments. NeuVector 2.0 deploys within an organization’s existing security processes to rapidly address and mitigate ongoing container threats. When NeuVector detects threats and vulnerabilities, the new auto-response rules – built to address common container attacks and security alerts – instantly provide response actions to protect containers and generate alerts.

These rules can also be customized to match criteria such as specific container vulnerability profiles, or set to address suspicious activity across multiple threat vectors – including the container network, processes, or file system. NeuVector 2.0 provides a unique range of incident responses, with full capabilities to quarantine compromised containers, generate custom notifications, and whitelist non-critical events. Using NeuVector 2.0, enterprises can fully address container security events and protect their applications, container services, and infrastructure from multi-vector attacks.

NeuVector 2.0 also adds new automated protections that detect exploits within containers, such as suspicious processes or file system activities. The security solution automatically calculates a baseline of container processes, whitelists legitimate activity, and alerts on any deviation from the baseline. Any installation of malicious packages, libraries, or new executables – or any modification to sensitive files – triggers NeuVector to scan the container for vulnerabilities and alert on the suspicious activity. These automatic protections do not require configuration but do allow for easy customization of whitelist/blacklist rules as desired. The new capabilities bolster NeuVector’s multi-vector firewall by adding deeper insights into activities within Kubernetes deployments, further safeguarding containers from process and file system attack vectors.

“The highly dynamic nature of Kubernetes environments makes robust and responsive threat automation a critical requirement to enterprise security,” said Fei Huang, CEO, NeuVector. “The release of NeuVector 2.0 offers rapid detection and response that addresses security threats as they occur, while protecting systems from process and file system-based attacks. We focus on continually automating the real-time security of Kubernetes deployments for enterprises using our solution.”
