Electric Cloud Introduces ElectricFlow 8.0 with New DevOps Insight Analytics to Automate Data Collection from the Entire Toolchain and Centralize Release Reporting

Extensible solution pulls key metrics from common DevOps tools like Jenkins, JIRA, HP ALM and ServiceNow to provide visibility into the business value, health and status of software releases

SAN FRANCISCO – Jenkins World – August 30, 2017 – Electric Cloud (http://electric-cloud.com), the leader in DevOps Release Automation and Continuous Delivery, today announced ElectricFlow 8.0 with DevOps Insight Analytics. DevOps Insight is an industry first, providing teams with automated data collection and powerful reporting to connect DevOps toolchain metrics and performance back to the milestones and business value (features, user stories) being delivered in every release. ElectricFlow Community Edition with DevOps Insight can be downloaded and used for FREE at (http://electric-cloud.com/products/electricflow/).

As the frequency, volume and complexity of application releases increases, teams struggle to collect and report on metrics from the myriad of DevOps tools, environments and processes involved. Understanding the status of individual features or stories in a release requires manual scraping of data from various tools, and error-prone spreadsheet analysis to accurately map data points back to their pipeline stages.
Teams require a simple, repeatable way to collect and view information from any DevOps tool along the pipeline, in the context of a single release. With all data centralized in one place, teams can gain instant insights into the status of the releases, easier troubleshooting analysis of bottlenecks or specific tasks along the pipeline, and spot trends at a glance, in real time.
According to Forrester Research, Inc.’s August, 2017 TechRadar™: Continuous Software Delivery, Q3 2016, “Many vendors are focused on the ‘workflow’ problem, but few are focused on being able to link the status of a build in the pipeline back to the status of a user story, an epic, a business capability, or a customer outcome,” the report states. “As pipelines multiply and products are composed out of many different services, rolling this data up will become even more important. Right now, business leaders lack an easy way to understand whether a particular release will actually deliver the business value they were hoping for.”
“Our releases have many moving parts, and touch many teams. Manual data collection, the lack of consistent metric reporting and other ad-hoc analysis techniques and tools made it difficult for us to report on release payload and status quickly, accurately, and consistently,” said John Esser, senior director of data center operations and SaaS at AdvancedMD. “With the new ElectricFlow release, we look forward to simplifying data collection to make it easier to slice and dice the data to optimize our delivery pipelines and gain up-to-the-minute insights about individual application releases.”

ElectricFlow DevOps Insight, built on ElasticSearch and LogStash, is delivered as a tightly integrated stand-alone Business Intelligence (BI) server, which isolates reporting requests from pipeline orchestration to eliminate the threat of performance impact. By extending ElectricFlow’s existing catalog of off-the-shelf plug-ins, DevOps Insight is able to pull key metrics from any tools being orchestrated as part of the end-to-end delivery process—from user story tracking and build automation to test automation and operations. A software development kit (SDK) allows teams to easily extend the solution to capture custom metrics from new tools.

An out-of-the-box Release Command Center dashboard displays this toolchain information in a consolidated, easy-to-interpret view, enabling teams to instantly glean the quality, health and status of a release and its business value. In addition, a powerful drag-and-drop GUI allows users to easily create custom reports and dynamic dashboards to visualize information in a way that works for any audience.

“Many organizations we talk to report having 60 or more tools in their software delivery pipelines, which makes reporting cumbersome and ‘fast feedback’ difficult for them to achieve,” said Steve Brodie, CEO of Electric Cloud. “ElectricFlow 8.0 with DevOps Insight is the only product of its kind to give executives and technical users alike a timely, repeatable way to understand the status of their releases and the business value being delivered.”

  • Veracode and devopsy.kinsta.cloud Research Shows Formal Education Leaves Developers Without Necessary Skills to Succeed in DevSecOps World

Veracode and devopsy.kinsta.cloud Research Shows Formal Education Leaves Developers Without Necessary Skills to Succeed in DevSecOps World
76 percent of developers indicated security and secure development education needed for today’s world of coding is missing from formal curriculums

BURLINGTON, Mass. – August 17, 2017 – New research shows that software developers are not receiving the training they need to be successful as DevOps becomes the prevalent approach to building and operating digital products and services. In today’s application-centric economy that gap could have real impact on the productivity of businesses in every industry, as well as on the security and quality of the software that underpins the digital economy. To view the infographic and access to the full research report, visit the Veracode blog.

The 2017 DevSecOps Global Skills Survey, sponsored by Veracode, a leader in securing the world’s software, and acquired by CA Technologies (NASDAQ:CA), and devopsy.kinsta.cloud, found that while 65 percent of DevOps professionals believe it is very important to have knowledge of DevOps when entering IT, they’re not receiving the necessary training through formal education to be successful in today’s DevSecOps world (70 percent). DevSecOps refers to the practice of integrating security into the development and testing of software for a “shift left” mentality for faster, better quality outcomes.

The on-demand nature of today’s digital economy has driven the need to focus on innovation and improve the overall workflow of the modern enterprise. Implementing DevSecOps processes, in software development and deployment as a means of fueling this effort, has highlighted the fact that today’s formal education for IT and development professionals has not evolved in the same way, or as quickly, as development has shifted. Those surveyed said that their IT workforce is only somewhat prepared (55 percent) or not prepared (nearly 30 percent) with the skills necessary to securely deliver software at the speed of DevOps. In fact, nearly 40 percent of hiring managers surveyed reported that the hardest employees to find are the all-purpose DevOps gurus with sufficient knowledge about security testing. This poses a significant challenge, as more than 50 percent of organizations said that either the entire organization or some of their teams are currently utilizing DevOps practices.

DevSecOps Adoption Requires Organizations to Minimize the Skills Gap

Although nearly 80 percent of respondents have a bachelor or master’s degree – with 50 percent reporting that they studied and earned degrees in computer science – there is still a lack of cybersecurity knowledge prior to entering the workforce. The survey found that 70 percent of respondents said the security education they received is not adequate for what their current positions require, and that they’re learning their most relevant professional skills on the job (65 percent).

“With major industry breaches further highlighting the need to integrate security into the DevOps process, organizations need to ensure that adequate security training is embedded in their DNA,” said Alan Shimel, editor-in-chief, devopsy.kinsta.cloud. “As formal education isn’t keeping up with the need for security, organizations need to fill the gap with increased support for education.”

According to the survey, slightly less than half of respondents said their employers paid for additional training since their entry into the workforce – and nearly seven in 10 developers report that their organizations provide them with inadequate security training. Third-party training, either in the classroom or through e-learning, was identified by one in three surveyed as the most effective way to gain new, relevant skills – but the study confirmed that very few are afforded the opportunity (four percent).

“WannaCry and Petya are just two recent examples of large-scale cyberattacks that further demonstrate the importance of security in today’s exceedingly digital world. Despite this apparent need, security practices and secure software development isn’t required to earn a degree in IT or computer science,” said Maria Loughlin, VP of Engineering, Veracode. “Our research with devopsy.kinsta.cloud highlights the fact that there are no clear shortcuts to address the skills gap. Higher education and enterprises need to have a more mature expectation around what colleges should teach and where organizations need to supplement education given the ever-changing nature of programming languages and frameworks. The industry will have to come together to ensure the safety of the application economy.”

    Methodology

The study, commissioned by Veracode and conducted by devopsy.kinsta.cloud, surveyed nearly 400 DevOps professionals globally. To read more about how DevSecOps builds a bridge between fast and secure software development, download Veracode’s Developer’s Guide to the DevSecOps Galaxy.

  • Enterprise Management Associates (EMA) Selects Electric Cloud’s ElectricFlow as a Top Product for DevOps IT Automation

The ‘Ten Priorities for Hybrid Cloud, Containers and DevOps in 2017’ EMA Report Names Top Three Products in Various IT Technologies to Help Customers Address the Ten Key IT Operations Priorities in an Effective and Innovative Way

SAN JOSE, Calif. – July 11, 2017 – Electric Cloud (http://electric-cloud.com), the leader in DevOps Release Automation and Continuous Delivery, today announced it has been selected as one of the “Top Three” in IT research firm EMA’s new report entitled, “Ten Priorities for Hybrid Cloud, Containers and DevOps in 2017.” The report shows where organizations are investing today and what they need to do to effectively harness containers, public cloud, DevOps automation, machine learning, hyper-converged systems and other critical technologies. Electric Cloud’s DevOps Release Automation platform – ElectricFlow – has been chosen as one of the top three products for IT Automation for DevOps. Download the full report at (http://electric-cloud.com/resources/whitepapers/ema-ten-priorities-hybrid-cloud-containers-devops-2017/).

“We are proud to be selected as an EMA ‘Top 3’ company for DevOps,” said Steve Brodie, CEO of Electric Cloud. “This is the fourth award-winning, independent ranking assessment of ElectricFlow we’ve received in the last six months, which is a reflection of the platform’s strength and rich feature set. By automating their entire software delivery pipeline – across all environments, applications, processes and toolsets – ElectricFlow enables our customers to transform their software delivery into a genuine competitive advantage in today’s market. Helping our customers release better software more frequently, and with less risk, is the core of Electric Cloud’s mission.”

Electric Cloud will be hosting a joint webinar on devopsy.kinsta.cloud with EMA’s Managing Research Director Torsten Volk on August 29, 2017 11AM PDT to share more findings from the report. For full details and to register, visit: (http://webinars.devopsy.kinsta.cloud/ema-ten-priorities-for-hybrid-cloud-containers-and-devops-2017).

According to the new EMA study, “almost any organization is affected by a lack of automation and the consequences this brings in terms of software release frequency, efficiency loss, software quality issues, and cost overruns. ‘Infrastructure Provisioning speed’ is the number two overall investment priority in IT operations for enterprises over the next 12 months (right after cost control). This is needed as 38 percent of enterprises complain about the time it takes to build development and test environments and an additional 33 percent does not have any automation capabilities in place to move application code from dev/test environments into production. Thirty-nine percent suffer from inconsistencies between dev, test and production environments and again 39 percent encounter software bugs due to a lack of communication between different development groups.”

“Electric Cloud’s ElectricFlow addresses three central problems of DevOps today: Automation at scale; ensuring fidelity of environments, processes and artifacts throughout the pipeline; and, visibility across the entire delivery lifecycle,” said Torsten Volk, managing research director at EMA who oversaw the research study. “ElectricFlow ties together the DevOps toolchain and centralizes DevOps automation, Release visibility and compliance reporting.”

ElectricFlow is the industry’s only DevOps Release Automation solution to span the entire Continuous Delivery process, from developer check-in to production release, with a single platform. This unified approach provides Dev and Ops teams a central point of governance, collaboration and visibility, eliminating the gaps that can introduce friction and errors in the end-to-end process. Just last month, Electric Cloud introduced its latest version of ElectricFlow (http://electric-cloud.com/company/news/press-releases/item/electric-cloud-simplifies-application-onboarding-takes-rocket-science-continuous-delivery/). The newest release includes a new self-service catalog of out-of-the-box templates of common DevOps processes and stacks for users to get started quickly and easily. ElectricFlow is also the only DevOps platform that allows users to create their own vetted, best practice automations to be added to the catalog and promoted across the entire organization – encouraging standardization, re-usability and governance.
