  • Doing Nothing is Hard Work!

    Doing Nothing is Hard Work!

If you really want to know how good your software delivery process is, try doing nothing. Yes, you read that correctly, do nothing: Go through your normal release process without any requirements, no new code, no testing and no installation at the end. Sounds easy, right?

So let’s get started. This will be different for each organization of course, but typically a new release starts by creating an entry in some administrative system. Then there is usually a review on the scope, budget and overall fit within the company’s strategy. Since there are no new requirements, you should automatically pass any reviews. But if the approval requires a meeting or conference call, you still have to schedule it. Say “Hi” and walk out of the room or hang up the phone. Make sure you get any required e-mail approvals.

Next, go through all of your other mandatory reviews: security, data privacy, regulatory compliance, user interface design, infrastructure readiness and so on. You may need your test team to sign off on quality as well. And don’t forget to reserve an install window and take into account any change freeze periods.

    doing nothing pic 1

If you’re lucky, you were able to skip or get auto-approval for most of these checkpoints because you had no new requirements, software or infrastructure. If you’re unlucky, you had to deal with review committees that only meet on the second Tuesday of each month. At any rate, add the elapsed days and see how you did. Five days or fewer? Give your company a gold star! Four to six weeks? Not too bad. Did it take longer than three months? Embarrassing of course, but take solace in the fact that you’re not alone.

When you have actual requirements to implement, a lot of this overhead is masked. You can do your approvals while there is real coding and testing going on. But this exercise will show you your limitations, and why optimizing your software delivery process is at least as important as automation.

Doing nothing won’t hit all your bottlenecks. In this exercise, we did not look at duplicating a development environment, getting capital for already-purchased production servers or repeating previously passed tests. I’ll talk about those tasks in another post.

How long do you think it would take your organization to do nothing? Leave a comment below.

  • CA Technologies Delivers First Integrated and Open Continuous Delivery Ecosystem, Enabling Organizations to Deliver Applications Faster and More Efficiently

CA Automates Complete Application Lifecycle for Improved Deployment Times and Testing Efficiency

New York, June 15, 2016 – CA Technologies (NASDAQ: CA) today announced the availability of CA Release Automation Continuous Delivery Edition, and several new integrations across CA’s DevOps portfolio and third party solutions creating the first integrated, fully automated and open continuous delivery ecosystem. Organizations can now connect and automate the entire app pipeline progression from development, to test, to production, to accelerate deployment times of applications by as much as 20 times* and improve testing efficiency by up to 25 percent**.

“To thrive in the application economy, digital transformation must be driven by continuous delivery—the ability to rapidly and reliably release applications that meet the demands of external and internal customers alike,” said Jeff Scheaffer, general manager, Continuous Delivery, CA Technologies. “CA is the only DevOps solution provider that currently bridges development, testing, release management and operations in an open, seamless tool chain that helps organizations achieve entirely new levels of application delivery speed and quality.”

Develop Swiftly, Test Agilely and Release Reliably

As organizations progress on their digital transformation journey, the volume, velocity and complexity of applications continues to grow. “Businesses no longer have the luxury of time. Rising customer expectations, competitive threats, and increased consumer choice have turned rapid delivery and iteration of software applications into a competitive differentiator. Optimizing the delivery value chain has become the new means to better business outcomes,” according to Forrester Research.***

For application owners tasked with rapidly delivering innovative and inspiring applications, but struggling with constraints and dependencies across the software development lifecycle, CA helps eliminate these challenges by providing continuous delivery capabilities that enable organizations to improve release planning and orchestration, use agile testing to test less and cover more, provision data on demand and deploy simulated environments – all with zero touch workflow.

    This is accomplished through:

“With CA’s continuous delivery solutions we’re standardizing our application products, achieving consistency between server environment platforms and are able to easily integrate CA Release Automation with other continuous integration applications such as Jenkins,” said Matt McComas, AVP Critical Applications, GM Financial. “As a result, we are quickly identifying and resolving inconsistencies in our application environments and have been able to cut deployment times down to two and a half minutes for a 98% reduction in deployment time.”

Furthermore, to help organizations leverage existing investments, CA’s continuous delivery solutions integrate easily with market tools such as HP Application Lifecycle Management (ALM), Atlassian’s JIRA Software, Jenkins, Docker, Perfecto, Chef and Puppet for an open and fully integrated continuous delivery solution stack.

“By using different CA tools as part of the software development lifecycle, testing is no longer a gatekeeper, but rather an operational quality door opener that helps simplify the development of new releases,” said, Arnold Hoogerwerf, IT strategy advisor at KPN, a leading telecommunications company in the Netherlands. “The tools we use from CA’s set of continuous delivery solutions have allowed us to reduce our investment and increase our agility in testing and helped us discover defects earlier so we can continually improve the quality of our applications in a shorter timeframe.”

Release automation goes hand-in-hand with DevOps practices and Cloud technologies to ensure that organizations can deliver apps that provide the very best customer experiences and drive competitive advantage in today’s app-driven, cloud-connected, mobile-everything world. The open and flexible architecture of CA’s continuous delivery solutions can help organizations deploy applications to modern Cloud platforms such as Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure and Skytap as a standard part of their app delivery practices.

  • 3 Rules for Successful SAFe Adoption

3 Rules for Successful SAFe Adoption

Startups and enterprises alike are redefining—some say disrupting—markets, industries and customer experiences by delivering innovative ideas at a rapid pace and responding to feedback. Often they fail, but they fail quickly and adjust. You know the ones: Spotify, Etsy, Netflix, Airbnb. How do they do it? What can we learn from them that will work in our own organizations? What is different? In a nutshell, all of these successful organizations innovate completely, not only in terms of what they do, but also how they do it. And the common thread is the application of lean and agile practices to improve their culture and deliver innovation to customers faster than the rest of us.

Today’s business imperative is to be the disruptor and more and more organizations are turning to enterprise scaled agile as a set of practices to help lead transformations to achieve that goal. The Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) is the industry-leading enterprise scaled agile framework with a proven track record in thousands of organizations for several reasons, not the least of which is the incredible breadth of definition and collateral so that you just don’t have to make this stuff up yourself. Nevertheless, there is not an one-size-fits-all framework and SAFe is no exception. But there are three key concepts prescribed by SAFe that, if you do nothing else, will help you be successful in your evolution toward becoming that disruptor.

    Go SAFe or Go Home

    1. Apply Lean Principles at an Enterprise level
You’ve likely heard the term “MVP,” or minimum viable product. This is about investing “just enough” to deliver a capability—a solution, product or application—and get feedback. It is about avoiding the pitfalls of over-engineering. This is perfect embodiment of lean thinking. By focusing on investing only as much as necessary to get feedback quickly (and doing this continuously) you not only reduce or eliminate wasted resources but also speed time to feedback. Lean is also about the notion that “capacity rules”—in other words, only invest as you have capacity to follow through. Otherwise, what’s the point?

    2. Apply Economic Thinking
Traditional methodologies typically focus on priority to rank at all levels, from business initiatives and projects down to team-level work that delivers changes into products and applications. In the agile world, story points (or complexity) also might be used. So what’s the problem with this? First, it is only a single dimension. What about business or customer value? What about cost of delivery or reducing risks or enabling market opportunities? Is timing a factor? All of these aspects should be considered when ranking because, at the end of the day, organizations are looking for the “biggest bang for the buck.” By applying economic thinking, you are maximizing the business’s ability to deliver the most value at the lowest cost in a timely manner.

    3. Focus on Delivery of Value
I’ve often heard that revenue generation is the primary goal when organizations look to speed delivery cycle times. In fact, the goal should be delighting the customer; revenue is a bonus, a side effect of happy customers who use your stuff and pay for it! A focus on improving feature delivery is too narrow. What you really want to do is improve time to value. That means articulating what value means, associating the notion of value with features that are delivered, assessing that value and then tracking so you have insight into your organization’s ability to deliver value and get better at it.

SAFe embraces all of these concepts through artifacts and activities anchored in lean and agile practices. Try it, you might be surprised at how impactful this can be in improving your ability to innovate and be the disruptor instead of being disrupted.

Read how a typical enterprise dipped its toe in SAFe water to drive delivery of a critical project, and be sure to visit the SAFe landing page to learn more.

  • Chef Launches Habitat, New Open Source Project to Automate Applications

After Nine Months in Stealth Development, First of Its Kind Open Source Project Packages Automation with Application for Deployment Anywhere, from Bare Metal to Containers

SEATTLE – June 14, 2016 – Chef<https://www.chef.io>, the leader in automation for DevOps<https://www.chef.io/solutions/devops>, today announced Habitat<https://habitat.sh>, an open source project that introduces a new approach for application automation. Applications packaged with Habitat have the intelligence to self-organize and self-configure. Habitat makes applications independent of underlying infrastructure, so it is easy to run applications across increasingly diverse environments such as containers, PaaS, cloud infrastructure and on-premise data centers.

Companies today have extensive digital presence with many custom applications. As these applications have grown in complexity, so has the burden of managing them. Traditionally, infrastructure has dictated the design of the application. Habitat takes the opposite view and, for the first time, puts the application front and center. As a result, companies can focus on business value and planning features that will make their products stand out rather than on the constraints of infrastructure and particular runtime environments.

Whether greenfield or legacy, any application that is deployed using a Habitat package has the intelligence to be aware of and react to its environment. Habitat’s novel approach to packaging allows the application to be independent of any particular infrastructure environment. Habitat also provides a well-defined interface that simplifies common tasks such as monitoring, safe deployment of new features and the creation of peer relationships that are required for production systems.

From a developer’s perspective, by wrapping applications in Habitat packages, application teams don’t have to worry about a particular runtime until they’re ready to deploy. Because Habitat flexibly handles the management of the application, teams are no longer responsible for creating their own management solutions over and over again. With Habitat, developers can focus on new products and features that move the business forward.

Chef’s co-founder and CTO Adam Jacob will unveil Habitat via livestream<https://bignews.chef.io/> at 8:30 a.m. PT today. The presentation will include a live demo and be followed by live Q&A on Twitter. Tweet questions to @chef using the tag #habitat.

    News Highlights:

Habitat is a first of its kind open source project that offers an entirely new approach to application management. Habitat makes the application and its automation the unit of deployment. When applications are wrapped in a lightweight “habitat,” the runtime environment, whether it is a container, bare metal, or PaaS, is no longer the focus and does not constrain the application. Features of Habitat include:

    •   Support for the Modern Application: Habitat packages include everything that an application needs to run, throughout its lifecycle. Habitat’s core components are:
    •   Packaging format. Applications in a Habitat package are atomic, immutable and auditable.

    •   Supervisor. The Habitat supervisor runs application packages with awareness of the packages’ peer relationships, upgrade strategy and security policies. The Habitat supervisor configures and manages the application for whatever environment is present.
The Habitat ecosystem also provides a build service that takes a Habitat build plan, creates the Habitat package, and publishes it to a depot.

    •   Run Any Application, Anywhere: With Habitat applications can run, unmodified, in any runtime environment, from bare metal and virtual machines, to containers like Docker and cluster-management systems like Mesosphere or Kubernetes, and PaaS systems like Pivotal Cloud Foundry.

    •   Easily Port Legacy Applications: When legacy applications are wrapped in a Habitat package, they become independent of the environment for which they were originally designed. They can quickly be moved to more modern environments such as the cloud and containers. Also, because Habitat packages have a standard, outward-facing interface, legacy applications become much easier to manage.
    •   Improve the Container Experience: Habitat reduces the complexity of managing containers in production environments. By automating application configuration within a container, Habitat addresses the challenges developers face when moving container-based applications from development environments into production.
    •   Integrate into Chef’s DevOps Workflow: The Habitat project is sponsored by Chef. Habitat leverages Chef’s deep experience with infrastructure automation to bring unprecedented automation capabilities to applications. Chef will offer commercial support for Habitat and ensure seamless integration between Habitat and Chef Delivery to fully automate the application release cycle, from development to deployment.

    Availability:
Habitat is an open source project under the Apache 2.0 license. You can download Habitat immediately athttps://www.habitat.sh/docs/get-habitat/. Chef offers commercial support for the Habitat supervisor through its Chef Enterprise subscription.

    Supporting Quotes
“We must free the application from its dependency on infrastructure to truly achieve the promise of DevOps. There is so much open source software to be written in the world and we’re very excited to release Habitat into the wild. We believe application-centric automation can give modern development teams what they really want — to build new apps, not muck around in the plumbing.”

    •   Adam Jacob, co-founder and CTO, Chef

“Each year we’ve seen steady progress in taming the challenges of application management at scale,
but I think we have to pay particular attention to technologies that continuously deliver desired end-states,
and across diverse production environments, otherwise we’re just speeding up over-the-wall procedures.”

    •   Mark Burgess, Technologist, author, creator of CFEngine, Emeritus Professor of Network and System Administration, Oslo University College

“Open source projects like Habitat embrace the ability to help DevOps teams run their applications in containers everywhere. The community can take advantage of Habitat’s application-centric automation on CoreOS Linux, the lightweight OS designed for containers, and Tectonic, the premier infrastructure platform for running distributed applications using Kubernetes, across all their environments while benefiting from security, reliability and scalability.”

    •   Wei Dang, head of product, CoreOS

“Traditional enterprise applications have limited proliferation into the hybrid cloud. By making it easy to build applications that run anywhere, the value of hybrid cloud platforms, containers, and their management can be fully realized. Habitat is an important step forward in enabling enterprise IT to fully benefit from the portability and efficiency of cloud computing.”

    •   Jonathan Donaldson, vice president of Software Defined Infrastructure, Data Center Group, Intel

“Open source is at the core of the modern application principles powering today’s digital economy. Together, Habitat and DC/OS enable organizations to apply these principles — including autonomy, portability, and scale — to new and legacy applications alike, making it even easier to automate the application stack in any environment.”

    •            Tobi Knaup, co-founder and CTO, Mesosphere

“Modern application teams want the freedom to make infrastructure choices without worrying about the impact of those choices on their applications. Habitat’s application automation combined with our container management platform gives development teams the ability to easily build, deploy, and manage their containerized applications on everything from bare metal to the cloud.”

    •            Sheng Liang, CEO, Rancher Labs

  • Q&A: CNCF on Instilling a DevOps Culture, Part 1

Q&A: CNCF on Instilling a DevOps Culture, Part 1

The Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) is a non-profit comprised of some 49 industry participants that have come together to drive development and adoption of cloud-native applications and services. The CNCF is uniting such giants as Google, IBM, Intel and Cisco Systems to distill a collection of container technologies that end-user companies deem praiseworthy to reach its goal.

The CNCF intends its membership to represent end users (the CNCF website lists one end user, Goldman Sachs), cloud and container technologies, online and IT services, and academic institutions.

On behalf of the CNCF, Craig McLuckie, its Governing Board chair, and Brian Grant, its Technical Oversight Committee representative, weigh in on leading the DevOps transformation and instilling a DevOps culture in this two-part Q&A.

devopsy.kinsta.cloud: How is the CNCF specifically involved in leading the DevOps transformation by instilling the DevOps culture, in the industry or in member companies, for example?

McLuckie: We believe that at the heart of the DevOps culture is the need to reduce the friction and, indeed, the barriers between teams that build an application and the teams that run an application. Developers learn to think about an application as a living service that evolves continuously and rapidly to meet the evolving business needs. Operations is there to deliver the tools and environment needed for them to successfully drive their application.

devopsy.kinsta.cloud: Why do developers need an environment that is safe to change? What kind of change? Safe how?

McLuckie: Safe change has many potential meanings: The first kind of “safe” is about creating deterministic behavior in operations. Does the system handle a change correctly every time? If I make a change to two systems, will they have the same state? How about to 1,000 systems? It’s important to focus on creating strong determinism by removing the moving parts in a production deployment.

The second kind of “safe” is about being able to validate that a change is good—not just in pre-production environments, but in the actual production environment—with a simple and deterministic rollback. It is important to make it trivial to replicate environments, and offer a way to run a simple experiment in production (e.g. route 1 percent of my traffic to this new version) with the option to deterministically roll forward or backward without effort.

A third kind of “safe” is about being able to ensure that every change is deliberate. One of the problems we often see in production systems is “configuration drift” that isn’t driven through any kind of formal process. This should be addressed by creating a strongly declarative toolset that makes every change deliberate and trackable.

devopsy.kinsta.cloud: How do you recommend providing these things that developers need? How do you help provide them?

McLuckie: There are multiple issues like data, security governance and applications that need to be addressed. Additionally, companies want to deliver apps with high velocity. How do you solve all of this? A vendor-neutral organization that can harmonize emerging technologies is important for facilitating cloud-native. Given the large number of players in the marketplace with competing approaches, having an open source way to solve this is also important.

Grant: Cloud-native infrastructure enables self-service and “hands-off” operation, including provisioning, deployment, scaling, healing, discovery, monitoring and more, with relatively little marginal effort for specific applications. By supporting open source projects such as Kubernetes and Prometheus that provide such functionality, the CNCF hopes to democratize high-velocity application delivery, which was previously achievable mainly by web-scale companies.

devopsy.kinsta.cloud: How does this align with instilling a DevOps culture?

Grant: In a DevOps culture, operators are both partners and customers of the developers. Developers take responsibility for meeting operational requirements: security, reliability, availability, scalability, efficiency, actionable monitoring and logging output, necessary configurability, compatibility with the production environment, etc. Cloud-native infrastructure provides mechanisms developers and operators need to facilitate and capitalize on those capabilities.
