  • BigPanda Launches DevOps Tools to Troubleshoot and Maintain Healthy Infrastructure at Scale

New Product Releases Include Unified Search, Incident Dashboards and Enhanced Integrations with Atlassian JIRA Software, Splunk and Datadog

PALO ALTO, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–BigPanda, the Alert Correlation Platform that turns huge volumes of IT data and alerts into consolidated insights for businesses, today announced that it has launched new product updates and technology integrations which give Ops teams the ability to troubleshoot and maintain healthy infrastructure at scale. BigPanda’s platform now includes Unified Search and Incident Dashboards as well as new integrations with Atlassian JIRA Software, Splunk and Datadog.

“Companies looking to mature their operational processes to better support end customers can now unify and visualize monitoring data across their organizations, drastically reduce mean time to resolution and increase uptime with these new features,“ said Assaf Resnick, CEO of BigPanda.

Unified Search Provides Smarter Results, Less Noise

Just released, BigPanda Unified Search is a new way for Ops teams to access alert data from all of their monitoring sources, eliminating the need to conduct parallel investigations within each monitoring tool.

When a problem materializes in a datacenter, it’s not always clear when or where the failure occurred, and Ops teams may frantically search through tens of thousands of alerts from multiple tools to identify the root cause. BigPanda Unified Search drastically reduces time to investigate by giving users an interactive way to find the most relevant alerts and incidents. It surfaces insights from all sources of monitoring alerts by continuously organizing issues from all common modern and legacy tools, including Nagios, New Relic, AppDynamics, Pingdom, SolarWinds, Site24x7 and CloudWatch.

Using BigPanda Unified Search, Ops teams can search through historical alerts even if the original monitoring tool does not retain that data and automatically find related incidents that were previously resolved or may still be open.

    Operational Health Dashboards

Ops teams that need an at-a-glance representation of operational health now have access to the new Incident Dashboard in BigPanda. The new feature allows organizations to visualize the health of applications, services and infrastructure areas with personalized dashboards that enable them to be aware of and respond more quickly to issues that can impact the business.

The new dashboard feature helps Ops teams answer questions about the overall health of their operations and environments and compare it to historical trends. Each dashboard can be customized with specific indicators, including incident counts by status, the percentage increase or decrease of active incidents, and how the volume of active incidents changed over time.

BigPanda Enhances Integration with Atlassian JIRA Software and HipChat

BigPanda’s technology integration with team collaboration software company Atlassian helps Ops teams using Atlassian’s JIRA Software and HipChat products collaborate to solve more problems faster.

BigPanda enables JIRA Software users to automatically create tickets based on intelligent correlated incidents, which helps them save time, reduce ticket clutter, and get a real-time view of what’s happening so they can deliver better customer service and more reliable apps. With today’s announcement, BigPanda now supports a two-way integration with JIRA Software. This means customers who track development tasks now have the ability to automatically resolve BigPanda incidents when JIRA tickets are closed.

“Many of JIRA Software’s more than 37,000 customers are manually tracking incident response tasks,” said Dave Meyer, senior product manager, Atlassian. “BigPanda’s JIRA Software integration will connect real-time insights from BigPanda with JIRA Software’s powerful search and workflow to help people resolve incidents faster.”

Splunk and Datadog Integrations Reduce Alert Noise

BigPanda also announced it is teaming up with two DevOps pioneers – Splunk and Datadog – to reduce alert noise and provide an alternative to filtering through thousands of redundant alerts, pages and emails.

BigPanda’s powerful aggregation engine normalizes alerts from Splunk, Datadog and other monitoring systems into a single consolidated incident management center. Then, BigPanda analyzes all alert streams in real time, and it intelligently groups them into a simplified list of high-level incidents so Ops teams can detect critical issues faster.

Now available in the Splunkbase App Store, the BigPanda App for Splunk allows Ops teams to trigger BigPanda incidents from Saved-Search Alerts by using the Custom Alert Actions capability in the Splunk 6.3 release. This app adds an option to the +Add Actions list in the Splunk user interface, making it easier than ever to correlate all alerts in BigPanda.

BigPanda’s new integration with Datadog makes it easier to integrate the two systems in minutes and synchronize Datadog alerts with BigPanda incidents. BigPanda features like Environments, AutoShare rules, and Operational Analytics can now be used to help Datadog customers monitor infrastructure and reduce the time required to investigate and resolve issues.

  • GitLab Expands Authentication Capabilities, Adding Support for U2F and YubiKey Through Partnership with Yubico

New Offering Gives Developers the Ability to Securely Access Any Number of Online Services, with One Single Device

SAN FRANCISCO and PALO ALTO —June 22, 2016— Today GitLab, the open source code collaboration tool that allows developers to code, test and deploy together, expanded its authentication capabilities for the enterprises via a partnership with Yubico.  GitLab now supports the FIDO Universal 2nd Factor (U2F) protocol for user authentication with the added layer of hardware security from YubiKey. U2F changes the game for online authentication as it uses public key cryptography and has built-in support to prevent phishing. This higher level of authentication enables organizations and individual developers to maintain the security of their servers, code, sites, and more from a single source.

With the steady rise of new devices and the growing capabilities of existing ones, the average user logs into networks, applications, or platforms from a variety of different devices. While device flexibility is great from a user perspective, it represents significant security challenges for organizations and developers. Each new access point makes it tougher to fend off malicious attacks particularly phishing while maintaining the integrity of accounts and systems.

GitLab’s VP of Engineering, Stan Hu, said, “GitLab and Yubico recognize the importance of security and are excited to be able to provide additional security measures for GitLab customers. GitLab has long supported two-factor authentication via a mobile application, but adding U2F support with YubiKey now provides an additional level of security. GitLab customers will have the option to choose which method of authentication is best for them.”

The new YubiKey offering reduces the number of steps coders must take to access their accounts, while maintaining usability and providing secure authentication with just a touch of the YubiKey. With U2F, GitLab customers can now authenticate by inserting their YubiKey into the USB port when prompted. The customer activates their YubiKey by simply pressing the button on the device, then instantly, the YubiKey securely authenticates the user into the account.

The same U2F YubiKey that works with GitLab also works for logging into a growing number of other services, including Google, Dropbox, and Dashlane, without any personal data or encryption secrets shared between service providers. With YubiKeys, there are no drivers or client software to install.

Jerrod Chong, VP of Solutions Engineering at Yubico, says, “GitLab is making a strong statement with their support for U2F, providing their user community with the highest level of account security by enabling YubiKey’s U2F capabilities.”

Stan Hu, GitLab’s VP of Engineering, said, “We are committed to securing our user’s work with proven, seamless solutions. Supporting YubiKey for two-factor authentication is a logical step towards that goal.”

  • BlazeMeter Contributes Latest Developments to the JMeter Ecosystem

BlazeMeter speeds up testing for JMeter users with a Step-by-Step Debugger and Keyboard Shortcuts, demonstrates open source test orchestration tool Taurus at Velocity Conference

SAN FRANCISCO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–BlazeMeter, the leader in open source-based continuous performance testing, today released a number of key contributions to the JMeter community, helping to advance JMeter from a scripting and load generation tool to a more complete environment where practitioners can develop, debug and execute tests.

“We’ve heard from developers that several common functionalities could be improved, so we worked on capabilities that make for an easier and more productive experience with JMeter.”

    Tweet this

Leading the list is the BlazeMeter Step-by-Step Debugger, which simplifies and expedites script development in JMeter 3.0 by allowing testers to debug scripts step-by-step and receive updates in real time. Testers can also skip over the step-by-step approach by setting breakpoints and running scripts until that breakpoint is reached. Now JMeter users can easily pinpoint precisely where the components are executed, understand how JMeter scoping works and, for the first time ever, view the execution order of the test plan. The debugger provides testers with a professional-grade tool to speed design and troubleshooting of sophisticated tests. A detailed guide on how to install and use the debugger is available on the BlazeMeter blog.

Additionally, a new Keyboard Shortcuts feature dramatically speeds scripting with an entirely new way to drop components into the test plan. Instead of manually inspecting menus to find components, JMeter users can select the command key with another predefined key, enabling them to build entire test plans with a series of keystrokes. As a core JMeter feature, Keyboard Shortcuts is available to all users by default when they install JMeter 3.0. For a demo of this and other helpful new features in JMeter 3.0, view our recent webcast: What’s New in JMeter 3.0 and Q&A.

BlazeMeter’s Chief Scientist Andrey Pokhilko also released the Plugins Manager — a faster and easier way to work with JMeter Plugins. Historically, installing and removing plugins by downloading file bundles was a complex and manual process that often resulted in menus cluttered with extra plugins. The Plugins Manager eliminates these issues by enabling JMeter users to install and remove plugins through one simple user interface.

“We’re always looking to develop new features that support the core JMeter community,” said Pokhilko. “We’ve heard from developers that several common functionalities could be improved, so we worked on capabilities that make for an easier and more productive experience with JMeter.”

“The BlazeMeter Step-by-Step Debugger adds professional-grade power to test development and speeds onboarding of developers and seasoned test practitioners to JMeter,” said Dave Karow, Director of Product Marketing at BlazeMeter. “Andrey’s Plugins Manager reduces complexity and the Keyboard Shortcut feature enables power users to create test plans in the blink of an eye. These features come directly from our engagement with hundreds of enterprise customers who want to move faster and more confidently with JMeter as they distribute responsibility for performance testing out to agile teams, closer to where development occurs.”

BlazeMeter’s open source initiatives extend beyond the scope of its JMeter contributions. The company continues to support and enhance the open source project Taurus, which offers an automation friendly framework for continuous testing using JMeter and other leading open source tools.

At Velocity Santa Clara 2016, Pokhilko will reveal how Taurus can bring load testing up a level by adding a consistent layer of automation and a wider scope of functionality to existing open source tools. Specifically, he will be presenting ‘Take Your Load Testing Up a Notch With Open Source Tools’ at 2:10 p.m. on Thursday, June 23. For more details, click on the link here.

  • Puppet 2016 State of DevOps Report Addresses the Most Pressing Issues in DevOps Today

Report Helps Organizations Understand the ROI of DevOps, Why Quality and Security Should Be Built In, and More

PORTLAND, OR–(Marketwired – Jun 22, 2016) – Puppet, the standard for automating the delivery and operation of the software that powers everything around us, today announced the findings of the 2016 State of DevOps Report. Over the past five years, Puppet has surveyed more than 25,000 technical professionals, making the State of DevOps Report the largest, most comprehensive and longest-running study on the topic of DevOps. Written in partnership with DevOps Research and Assessment (DORA), the fifth annual State of DevOps Report includes findings on some of the most debated topics in DevOps, including understanding the ROI of DevOps; how building quality and security into the development cycle affects business outcomes; the role of lean product management; and the relationship between employee engagement and organizational success.

“Today, every company is a software company. Yet there’s a huge delta between the organizations that get it and are able to ship software on demand, and the organizations that take days, weeks or even years to ship simple upgrades,” said Nigel Kersten, CIO of Puppet. “The 2016 State of DevOps Report shows that gap is widening. We hope the report will help organizations identify their own inhibitors of change so they can drastically increase their competitiveness and ultimately, their revenue.”

    The Widening Performance Gap
The 2016 State of DevOps Report shows that high-performing organizations are widening their lead against lower-performing organizations. Compared to low performers, high-performing organizations deploy 200 times more frequently, have 2,555 times faster lead times, and recover 24 times faster from failed changes, with three times lower change fail rates. Because high performers build quality into each stage of the development process, they also spend 22 percent less time on unplanned work and rework than lower-performing organizations, and thus are able to spend 29 percent more time on new work.

    Understanding the ROI of DevOps
Since the first State of DevOps Report was published five years ago, it’s been widely accepted that DevOps significantly affects IT performance and organizational performance. The 2016 State of DevOps Report builds on this body of knowledge and provides example formulas (based on survey findings and industry averages) to help organizations understand the potential cost savings of DevOps practices, and the additional value to be gained from investing in DevOps.

    Security
All too often, security testing is tacked on at the end of the delivery process, leading to expensive and painful fixes once development is complete. The 2016 State of DevOps Report confirms that integrating security into each stage of the development process has a positive impact on IT performance and security outcomes. Organizations that better integrate information security objectives into daily work spend 50 percent less time remediating security issues than low performers.

    Employee Engagement (eNPS)
Employee engagement is more than a feel-good metric: Companies with highly engaged workers have been shown to increase revenues two and a half times as much as companies with lower engagement levels. The 2016 State of DevOps Report found that employees in high-performing organizations are more than twice as likely to recommend their organization to a friend as a great place to work. This indicates a high level of engagement and identification with the company, and as many business studies show, highly engaged employees are more productive and creative, and provide better experiences to customers.

    Lean Product Management
The 2016 State of DevOps Report looked at lean product management practices to see if changes upstream in the product management process affect downstream business outcomes. Analysis shows that teams that implement continuous delivery practices and take an experimental approach to product development build higher-quality products and feel more connected to the overall organization.

The 2016 State of DevOps Report also reveals:

    • Respondents who report they are part of a DevOps team increased from 16 percent in 2014 to 22 percent in 2016.
    • High-performing organizations get more new or planned work done, because they have less unplanned work to cope with.
    • And more insights into how organizations are transforming their cultures and outcomes.

  • mLab Launches Private Environments on AWS

Developers can now peer their AWS VPCs to their mLab Private Environments to create their own private networks isolated from the rest of the cloud datacenter
San Francisco – June 22, 2016 – mLab, the fully managed cloud database service featuring automated provisioning, scaling, and management of MongoDB databases, today announced the private beta of Private Environments. mLab Private Environments are virtual private networks that customers can provision to house their various database deployments hosted with mLab.
Private Environments provide the security benefits of self-hosting database deployments without the headache of self-hosting. With Private Environments, customers can use all of the traditional network security best-practices and techniques for designing their application. Customers can:
    • isolate their database from public networks while allowing secure access to their application infrastructure
    • create sophisticated network topologies to ensure least privilege access to their database deployments using CIDR ranges and AWS Security Groups
    • auto-scale their application tier without having to modify database firewall rules

“As an early beta user of Private Environments, we’ve appreciated the added level of security it provides,” said Chris Lambert, CTO, Lyft. “The private network created by Private Environments keeps our infrastructure secure as we continue to grow, and makes it easy for our team to provision new application servers and auto-scale without needing to modify database firewall rules. We’ve been using mLab’s cloud-hosted MongoDB for several years and it has played a big role in helping Lyft scale.”

The new solution is engineered to be a novel way for customers to use virtual private networks through a DBaaS provider. With Private Environments, mLab has created an isolated and self-contained solution that securely and seamlessly integrates into an existing stack as though the databases were inside a customer’s own VPC. The result is network security that is both operationally easy and flexible.

mLab’s cloud database-as-a-service platform hosts over 300,000 MongoDB deployments, powering companies like Turner, Lyft, and Whole Foods Market. Private Environments is the first of several releases slated for 2016 as mLab continues to debut new cloud infrastructure capabilities.

“mLab is hands-down the easiest way to run MongoDB on AWS,” said Will Shulman, CEO, mLab. “We believe that constantly managing database infrastructure isn’t something most developers should have to worry about; mLab’s platform and tools are designed to automatically provision, host, scale, monitor and backup your MongoDB databases. Private Environments is a powerful new capability that furthers mLab’s goal of providing cloud infrastructure solutions that are both simple and secure. We’re excited for developers to try it out.”

    • Alert Transformations– Quiet unactionable alerts and automatically route specific alerts to the correct team members
    • Alert Annotations– Automatically append alerts with runbooks, monitoring graphs and other relevant information, giving the alert recipient immediate remediation steps
    • Outbound Webhooks– Extend VictorOps platform data into other systems and integrate VictorOps incidents into other service dashboards
    • API– Leverage the VictorOps API to extend VictorOps to existing legacy tools and reporting systems
    • Post-Mortem Report Generator – The ability to automatically pull a snapshot of all activities (alerts, conversations and remediation actions) associated with an outage. This information translates easily into SLA reporting and the facilitation of team retrospectives.

Organizations of all sizes are increasingly looking to adopt incident management solutions in order to reduce the impacts of IT downtime. According to Gartner, the potential cost of downtime for organizations can approach $540K an hour. If reduced, mean time to resolution (MTTR) can prevent a modest 300 minutes of downtime in a single year, and businesses could save upwards of $2.5M.

“Visibility at velocity is very important to us so engineers know what needs to be addressed from problems identified in production. [The] VictorOps Incident Automation Engine is allowing us to inform more team members in a timely fashion. We are lowering our MTTR and increasing the reach of our incident alerting audience without waking up everyone for the wrong reasons,” said Mike Perttula, DevOps Specialist at Signiant.

DOI: What type of interest in DevOps are you seeing in your region?

TaUB Solutions: At the moment, we have successfully delivered around 11 batches of DevOps Foundation and Certified Agile Service Manager courses. We appeal to our customers because of the practitioner focus that we bring to the table and take them through case studies to understand the end-to-end value chain. We also see great traction from Indian corporates to plunge in to the DevOps journey to serve their respective customers better.

DOI: How do you think DevOps contributes to the business’ value stream?

TaUB Solutions: One of the things that appeal most to me is the ability to articulate the end-to-end value chain. Business today does not care about which framework or methodology you adopt for the customers. All that matters is to deliver an end-to-end value chain and get a common understanding among different functions and leverage the best across the enterprise. I see tremendous value of leveraging agile, ITSM and lean principles with culture and tool chain to demonstrate key business value.

DOI: What topic area in DevOps excites you the most?

TaUB Solutions: There are three things:

    • Culture change
    • Power of automation using tool chain
    • Business KPIs and Common Metrics across the organization

DOI: Why should enterprises and individuals consider formal DevOps Training?

TaUB Solutions: Today, DevOps is still at its infant stage and has not yet been codified. So people have their own perspectives, thoughts and misconceptions. So in order to be certain with the path they traverse, it is increasingly important to step in the right direction. This is where a formal DevOps training from DOI can help people to understand fundamentals and DevOps trends from practitioners.
