DevOps Dozen² Awards 2021 Nominations Now Open

The DevOps Dozen² Awards are back and open for nominations. This past year has been quite a journey and we are very proud of the DevOps community in their ability to pivot, innovate, adapt and think ahead in these challenging times. Some outstanding leaders and vendors have worked nonstop to reach their goals and achieve the highest level of success. We are thrilled to celebrate their hard work and achievements.

The DevOps Dozen² Awards honor the most dedicated and inspiring thought leaders and innovators who have made significant contributions to the community. For the second year, we have expanded our awards program to include two different DevOps Dozen sections: DevOps Dozen Tools and Services Awards and the DevOps Dozen Community Awards.

There are 12 awards for each section:

    • DevOps Dozen Tools and Services Awards — Recognizing the companies that develop and deliver outstanding solutions to empower developers, DevOps and IT operations teams.
    • DevOps Dozen Community Awards — Honoring the leaders who have made a positive impact in the DevOps community.

Nominations are made by the audience. Anyone can nominate a tool or service, although there is a $250 entry fee for the Tools and Services Awards nominations. We implemented this fee last year to cut down on spam and superfluous nominations. However, there is no fee for Community Awards nominations. Please note that commercial tools and services are not eligible for the Community Awards and will not make it through to the finals.

Finalists will be selected and winners will be chosen from among the finalists. The finalists will be determined by general public voting (weighted for 40% of the final total) and our judges’ selections (weighted for 60% of the final total).

The last day to submit your nominations is October 22. To vote, follow the steps outlined on the DevOps Dozen² website.

Who Are the DevOps Dozen² Judges?

  • New Relic Survey Shows Greater Appreciation for Observability

New Relic Survey Shows Greater Appreciation for Observability

A global survey of 1,300 software engineers, developers, IT leaders and executives found half of respondents (50%) are in the process of implementing an observability platform. Another 23% of respondents said that they cannot gain end-to-end observability at all, while 26% said they believe they have mature observability practices in place. The survey, published today, was conducted by CITE Research on behalf of New Relic.

The majority (94%) of IT professionals said observability is important for their job role, while nearly three-quarters (74%) said there is still room to grow their observability practice. In fact, 81% of the 450 C-suite executives that participated in the survey said they expect to increase observability budgets in the next year, with 20% expecting those budgets to increase significantly.

Overall, the survey finds that lack of resources (38%), skills (29%), understanding of the benefits (27%) and strategy (26%) are top barriers to achieving observability.

Observability, in one form or another, has always been a core tenet of DevOps best practices. Most DevOps teams have relied on monitoring tools to observe a specific process or function. The challenge is those monitoring tools track a pre-defined set of metrics such as resource utilization. Ideally, observability combines metrics, logs and traces—a specialized form of logging—to instrument applications in a way that makes it simpler to troubleshot issues without having to rely solely on a limited set of pre-defined metrics.

Nearly three-quarters of respondents (72%) noted that IT teams today need to toggle between at least two different tools to manage IT, with 13% having to use more than ten different tools to monitor the health of their systems.

In contrast, observability platforms make it possible to correlate events across both applications and infrastructure. This capability makes it easier for analytics tools to identify anomalous behavior indicative of the root cause of an IT issue. Armed with these insights, it becomes a lot simpler for IT teams to resolve issues faster.

The New Relic survey notes that 60% of respondents still monitor telemetry data at the application level, which indicates that a massive amount of valuable telemetry data is largely going unused. A full 91% of IT professionals that responded to the survey noted that observability is critical at every stage of the software life cycle, especially when it comes to planning and IT operations.

Top benefits cited include faster deployments (27%), more cost-effective use of IT resources (25%), better digital experiences (23%) and improved productivity (22%). The top use cases cited involved digital transformation initiatives (42%) followed by cloud optimization (37%), DevOps processes (36%) and bringing products to market faster (36%).

Buddy Brewer, group vice president and general manager for New Relic, said observability will become a more pressing issue in IT environments, thanks to the rise of microservices-based applications running on Kubernetes. A full 88% of IT decision-makers New Relic surveyed said they are exploring Kubernetes and containers at some level right now, but only 10% said they have deployed them in a production environment. A total of 40% expect to be in production within three years.

In general, it’s become critical for IT teams to be able to query data in real-time to resolve issues that are becoming more challenging to resolve at a time when organizations have never been more dependent on IT. Sampling data in the hopes of discovering issues is no longer sufficient, noted Brewer.

The challenge, of course, is that most IT teams have been using legacy monitoring tools for so long that it’s still hard to imagine there might be a better approach. That doesn’t necessarily mean all those legacy tools will be immediately replaced, but it does mean many of them may simply fade away over time.

One way or another, most IT teams will soon be able to observe IT environments more deeply. Developers increasingly are taking advantage of open source tools like OpenTelemetry to instrument applications in a way organizations can more easily afford, regardless of whether they fully appreciate the nuances of modern observability versus traditional monitoring.

  • MediaOps, Boca Code Award ‘Engineer the Change’ Scholarship

MediaOps, Boca Code Award ‘Engineer the Change’ Scholarship

I am really proud to announce that, in partnership with Boca Code, MediaOps has awarded a scholarship for the Fall 2021 term to the Software Engineering Career Course, a 10-week rigorous and fast-paced coding boot camp from Boca Code. Alina Maliuk, a first-generation immigrant from Ukraine, is the recipient.

The Engineer the Change scholarship was initiated by MediaOps to help foster diversity in the local tech industry and empower individuals from underserved communities to develop the skills needed to succeed in IT. Boca Code offers comprehensive training in software development to enable course attendees to develop these skills.

Need for Diversity in STEM fields

Research shows a staggering lack of diversity in STEM fields, most noticeably within computer and engineering positions. The tech industry is predominantly white and male, which appalls me (yes, even though I am a white male), and I wanted to do something to encourage more diversity across our industry. Gender and race inequity are glaring workforce disparities that require both recognition and responsibility from those at the highest levels in the tech world to create a more diversified and equitable workforce.

    Two Full Scholarships Awarded Annually

MediaOps sponsors two $10,000 scholarships each year to enable students to enroll in Boca Code’s flagship Software Engineering Career Course. The full-time, 10-week intensive course combines theory and hands-on, project-based learning to prepare students for a career in software engineering. As part of their coursework, students take on development projects for local businesses, providing the students immediate, hands-on experience with real projects.

The Engineer the Change scholarships combine two goals that are core to the MediaOps team and me. The first is doing our part to make South Florida a world-class hub for the tech industry. The second is providing opportunities for individuals from disadvantaged communities to acquire the skills they need for a successful career in tech. My hope is that we also serve as an inspiration to other local companies to fund similar programs in support of these worthy goals.

    About Our Winner, Alina Maliuk

    Alina Maliuk scholarship
Alina Maliuk, Engineer the Change scholarship winner

Alina hails from Ukraine, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in management. After college, she married and had her first son. During her maternity leave in 2012, her family emigrated to New York. Being first-generation immigrants, they had to start their life here in the United States from scratch. For the first few years, Alina and her husband worked in entry-level jobs. In 2018, now a mother of two, Alina took several online classes in web development and rediscovered her love of learning—particularly software development. Now a resident of Boca Raton, Alina found Boca Code and attended a workshop in web development.

Alina was energized by that workshop, which furthered the continuing education she had already begun. Through that initial course, the Boca Code team inspired her to go even further. She is ready to move on to her next career, which she wants to be in software engineering. Thanks to the Engineer the Change scholarship, she will now have an opportunity to accelerate her tech career. At the same time, she is demonstrating to other female immigrants in Florida that if you can dream it and work hard to achieve it, you can make it happen.

  • MediaOps and DevOps Institute Earn Inc. 5000 Honors

MediaOps and DevOps Institute Earn Inc. 5000 Honors

I am really proud to announce today that both MediaOps and DevOps Institute have been honored by Inc. and earned inclusion in the Inc. 5000 list of the fastest-growing companies in America.

For MediaOps, this is the second year in a row we have earned this honor. For DevOps Institute, it is the first year they have been honored. First of all, congratulations to all of the great people who work at and make both MediaOps and DevOps Institute the great companies they are. None of the success of these companies would be possible without their talent, skills, hard work and dedication. Thanks to all of you.

Secondly, as the founder/co-founder of both of these organizations, I can’t tell you how proud I am that both of these companies have not only had the success they have (as evidenced by this honor) but that they have done so in the middle of a global pandemic. It really makes all of the hard work and the long days and nights worthwhile.

For anyone who has ever started a business, you know that you put a certain amount of your blood, sweat and tears into any venture you are involved in. It is no different here! Since 2014 I have put everything I could into growing MediaOps into the company it is today. For DevOps Institute, I was lucky to have my partner Jayne Groll, DevOps Institute CEO, take the lead in making DevOps Institute the leading member organization/certification authority in the DevOps space today.

Yes, you hope the monetary rewards of founding a company make it all worthwhile. But this kind of recognition is also very gratifying. It gives you the extra spring in your step and makes the load lighter.

These awards also highlight something else. The ascendancy of technology. It is no coincidence that both of these companies play in the digital transformation space and have seen such success. Digital transformation is driving the world right now. Software is driving digital transformation, and DevOps, cybersecurity and cloud are driving software.

At the end of the day, it is a great honor to have not one but two companies you started win this award at the same time. I think it speaks volumes about the future of both of these organizations. More news on that front is coming, so stay tuned for more great things coming from MediaOps and DevOps Institute!

  • Salesforce Pilots Series of DevOps Initiatives

Salesforce Pilots Series of DevOps Initiatives

At its online TrailheaDX 2021 conference, Salesforce today unveiled a DevOps Center pilot that provides a portal through which organizations can track and manage changes to Salesforce applications along with a unified command line interface (CLI) for all its applications.

In addition, Salesforce plans to add Salesforce Functions to enable developers to deploy code in a serverless environment.

The company has also promised to extend its low-code App Builder tool to include support for Dynamic Interactions, a capability that enables both professional and citizen developers to add reusable components to any application. The company has also added a Customer Identity Plus tool that enables developers to consolidate and manage customer identities.

Finally, Salesforce is adding an Einstein Automate tool that employs machine learning algorithms to both integrate data and automate workflows that can invoke, for example, an existing MuleSoft Composer tool for integrating applications using a Flow Orchestrator that will be made available as a pilot project this summer. MuleSoft is a subsidiary of Salesforce. There is also now an Einstein Data Detect tool that ensures organizations adhere to data privacy laws by employing machine learning algorithms to discover when developers might have inadvertently exposed sensitive data.

Dynamic Interactions, Salesforce Functions and CLI unification are expected to be generally available in the winter of next year, while the Einstein capabilities are expected to arrive this summer.

Ryan Ellis, senior vice president of product management for platform at Salesforce, said the company is making a concerted effort to make it easier for both professional and citizen developers to build applications within the same environment by fostering collaboration via a DevOps Center portal that is expected to be generally available in the spring of 2022. Today the skills that any citizen developer can bring to bear are generally limited, largely because they don’t typically know how to build a well-designed, secure application that will truly scale in an enterprise IT environment.

    Salesforce

However, as more artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities are added to low-code tools the amount of developer guidance being provided will increase over time. That additional guidance will enable citizen developers to build robust applications more reliably, noted Ellis.

In the meantime, the primary beneficiaries of low-code tools continue to be professional developers that employ them to build applications faster than they could otherwise using procedural code.

In general, Ellis said the relative DevOps maturity of organizations building and deploying custom applications on top of the software-as-a-service (SaaS) platform managed by Salesforce continues to increase steadily. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, many organizations opted to extend existing SaaS applications provided by Salesforce to accelerate digital business transformation initiative using low-code tools rather than developing every application from scratch using procedural code.

Of course, as the rate at which those applications are being built continues to accelerate, the next big challenge is managing the application life cycles after they are deployed.

It’s not clear what the ultimate mix of applications built using low-code tools versus procedural code will be. Millions of lines of code are now being regularly deployed on Salesforce platforms, noted Ellis. It may be a little while before Salesforce is able to bring DevOps best practices to all that code, but, starting today, the journey has begun.

They had to be U.S.-based, privately held, for profit, and independent—not subsidiaries or divisions of other companies—as of December 31, 2019. (Since then, a number of companies on the list have gone public or been acquired.) The minimum revenue required for 2017 is $100,000; the minimum for 2019 is $1 million. • Helping Bring Balance, Diversity to the IT Workforce

Helping Bring Balance, Diversity to the IT Workforce

It’s a fact: Minorities and women traditionally have been underrepresented in the IT space. According to the Brookings Institute, less than 7% of computing and math-related jobs are held by people who are Black and Latino. And while women are faring better, they still only represent about 30% of the workforce in computer and mathematical occupations, according to the institute. Clearly, there is more work to be done in creating a balanced, diverse IT workforce.

At MediaOps, one of the traits I believe helps define this company is inclusiveness, recognizing the value each person in our organization brings to the table. Different educations, different backgrounds, different perspectives … they all help us see the world in a different light and make decisions that are rooted less in biases and more with a deeper understanding fomented by the populations each of us represents. This, I believe, is fundamental in achieving balance; by recognizing and celebrating our differences, we create a strong, unified organization.

    Be the Change

It is with the goals of diversity and inclusiveness that MediaOps is proud to announce “Engineer the Change,” a scholarship program in conjunction with Boca Code, an immersive coding school that provides in-depth technical training. MediaOps will sponsor two scholarships annually to students from disadvantaged communities interested in pursuing a career in the tech industry. The scholarships, each valued at $10,000, will enable students to enroll in the flagship Software Engineering Career Course at Boca Code.

The “Engineer the Change” scholarships will be awarded to two deserving recipients on an annual basis. To be eligible, applicants must be 18 years or older and be part of an underrepresented community. To be considered, applicants will be required to submit an essay detailing how they can serve as role models to other disadvantaged individuals hoping to acquire the skills to become successful tech workers, and what type of career in the tech industry they are hoping to pursue. While the idea is to help the South Florida tech community, applicants can apply from anywhere, as long as they include in their application essay why they are coming to South Florida to launch their tech career.

Submissions for the first scholarship for the Software Engineering session, taking place April 5-June 4, are now open. The deadline to apply is March 15. The second scholarship application process will open Aug. 1 for the session taking place Sept. 20-Dec. 3.

    Get Involved

MediaOps is offering these scholarships because we believe diversity enriches everything. We encourage other companies to do their part to help promote diversity and inclusiveness, both within their organization and through programs targeting underrepresented communities locally or regionally. It is time for the IT sector to do its part in promoting technology to women, minorities and other traditionally underrepresented groups; only by getting involved today will we help shape the next generation of technology workers.
