  • CircleCI Adds Private Orbs to DevOps Toolchain

CircleCI Adds Private Orbs to DevOps Toolchain

CircleCI announced today it is enabling IT reams to configure their own private integrations around its namesake continuous integration/continuous delivery (CI/CD) platform.

The company enables integrations with third-party services via reusable config packages, based on YAML files, known as orbs. Now, internal IT teams can create private orbs that they can securely reuse to invoke, for example, a frequently accessed microservice via the command line interface (CLI) and invoked via the CircleCI platform.

CircleCI CEO Jim Rose said the goal is to make DevOps teams more efficient at a time when the number of microservices organizations are reusing is increasing steadily. Rather than having to manually integrate each of those services every time they are needed, a private orb will consistently automate the process using the same template, said Rose. That approach, over time, will enable DevOps teams to more easily build and maintain an ecosystem of microservices, Rose added.

In general, Rose said, with more DevOps teams now working from home to help limit the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, there is a greater need to automate as many tasks as possible to enhance overall DevOps productivity. Constructing an orb gives DevOps teams a relatively simple way of achieving that goal, Rose said. Today, there is often a small, elite group within DevOps teams that builds tools to automate processes in a way that the rest of the DevOps team can more easily consume. Private orbs make it easier for anyone on the DevOps team to create a reusable process, said Rose.

Many of those DevOps teams are, of course, attempting to accelerate digital business transformation initiatives launched in response to the pandemic. Those initiatives are generally based on applications being constructed using microservices that, ideally, developers will reuse across multiple projects. The CircleCI private orbs can be remotely invoked from anywhere via the CI/CD platform the company manages on behalf of DevOps teams that employ it.

It’s not clear to what degree IT organizations are shifting CI/CD platforms to the cloud in the wake of the pandemic. In theory, a cloud-based platform is more accessible to DevOps teams that, like most employees, are working from home. Even after the pandemic eventually subsides, many members of DevOps teams will undoubtedly be working from home more regularly.

In the meantime, a recent analysis of data from 11 million workflows on the CircleCI platform suggests that, after an initial spike of activity in the early days of the pandemic, DevOps teams settled into a more deliberate pace of application development after quickly adjusting to what has become the new DevOps normal. That new normal is likely to change again once COVID-19 vaccines become more widely distributed, but there will certainly be no returning to the way applications were built and deployed prior to the pandemic.

  • CloudBees Appoints New CEO to Drive Next Level of DevOps Growth

CloudBees Appoints New CEO to Drive Next Level of DevOps Growth

CloudBees announced today the appointment of Stephen DeWitt as its new CEO, taking over from Sacha Labourey, who will become chief strategy officer.

Labrourey said after leading the company for the past 10 years, and after a banner year that saw the company generate more than $100 million in revenue, the time was right to appoint a new CEO to take the company to next level. The move also allows Labourey more time to focus on product development.

    Stephen DeWitt
    Stephen DeWitt, CloudBees CEO

DeWitt most recently served as chief strategy officer for Automation Anywhere, a provider of a robotic process automation (RPA) platform. DeWitt previously served as the CEO of WorkMarket, a labor automation platform for enterprises, Azul Systems, a provider of platform for running Java applications and Cobalt Networks, a provider of Linux servers.

Without committing to a specific initial public offering (IPO) date, DeWitt said the ultimate goal is to put the processes in place that will enable CloudBees to grow to $200 million in revenues and beyond.

Achieving that goal will also require tighter integration across what has become a diverse portfolio of DevOps platforms, DeWitt said. The challenge is providing IT organizations with all the benefits of that integration without locking them into any specific component, DeWitt added.

Going forward, DeWitt said IT teams should expect to see CloudBees invest more in artificial intelligence (AI) to further automate DevOps processes. There are many low-level DevOps tasks that could be automated using machine learning algorithms to reduce the level of friction DevOps teams often encounter.

Becoming a $200 million company, however, is more difficult than becoming a $100 million company, DeWitt said. Not only does the company have to put the processes in place to grow, but CloudBees today faces more viable competition than it did when it first pioneered the adoption of DevOps best practices.

The number of organizations adopting DevOps best practices is not only increasing, but organizations that have implemented continuous integration/continuous delivery (CI/CD) platforms also are employing them more widely. Instead of only being employed by pockets of development teams, entire enterprises are now using DevOps best practices and standardizing on a CI/CD platform. Many of those decisions are being driven by the need to accelerate digital business transformation initiatives in the wake of the economic downturn brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.

As the application development stakes rise, C-level executives are also getting more involved in application development and deployment decisions, DeWitt said. Those executives not only want to accelerate the rate at which applications are built and deployed, they also want greater visibility into processes that now have a direct impact on revenue streams, DeWitt said.

It remains to be seen just how quickly DevOps platform providers, as a whole, will grow, but with more venture capital pouring into the sector by the day, there is no shortage of fuel to throw on the proverbial DevOps fire.

  • Sentry Updates Tool for Monitoring JavaScript Apps

Sentry Updates Tool for Monitoring JavaScript Apps

Sentry today announced it has updated its JavaScript SDK tool for monitoring applications to provide a more comprehensive view of application health.

Previously, Sentry’s JavaScript SDK enabled JavaScript developers to insert lines of code that would tell them, for example, how many times an application failed. A new release health capability now also identifies what percentage those fail instances represent of the total number of times that application was successfully launched.

Developers can, in effect, better gauge adoption of a JavaScript application by tracking the percentage of crash-free sessions and crash-free users over the application’s life cycle.

Ben Vinegar, vice president of engineering for Sentry, said the JavaScript SDK is designed to provide developers with a monitoring capability that doesn’t require an IT operations teams to stand up and manage an entire application performance management (APM) platform. That approach also eliminates the need to instrument JavaScript applications with agent software, Vinegar said.

The JavaScript SDK consumes tens of kilobytes of memory after it is embedded directly within a JavaScript application, said Vinegar.

In general, JavaScript is increasingly being used to build complex applications, using frameworks such as React, as an alternative to Java. Over the years, IT organizations have developed a certain amount of bias around how Java applications should be monitored and managed using APM platforms. However, as JavaScript developers assume more responsibility for their applications after deployment, they need real-time monitoring tools that can consume JavaScript application metrics and are built in to existing APM platforms, .

Of course, APM platforms are managing more than just JavaScript applications, so they’ll remain useful for the forseeable future. However, ease of observation and monitoring is a significant factor when application developers choose a language in which to build an application, and it’s up to individuals to remediate issues that might arise in production. Developers, therefore, have a vested interest in discovering potential issues before that application is deployed.

Historically, developers have not had access to JavaScript application monitoring tools that they could easily implement on their own. Sentry’s tools makes it possible for developers to identify performance issues, including calls to application programming interfaces (APIs) and other common errors, and address those before an application crashes.

It’s possible, as performance and security issues shift left and developers become more accountable for user experience, that developers might one day instrument and monitor applications on their own – if for no other reason than self-preservation. Every minute a developer spends remediating a production issue in an existing application is one less minute they will have to write new code.

  • Microsoft Advances DevOps Agenda

    Microsoft Advances DevOps Agenda

Microsoft, at its online Ignite 2020 conference, has launched a bevy of updates that collectively further adoption of best DevOps practices on the Microsoft cloud platform, including for the first time a preview of an ability to store artifacts created using low-code Power Apps tools on GitHub.

In addition, Microsoft announced a preview of an update to Visual Studio 2019 16.8 that will add support for GitHub Codespaces, a previously announced capability that automatically creates repositories on GitHub. GitHub Codespaces is currently available in beta and soon will be accessible directly from within Visual Studio.

Microsoft also revealed it has enhanced the Git tooling experience in Visual Studio to enable more asynchronous collaborations. A GitHub extension for Visual Studio Code enables developers to work with GitHub Issues and Pull Requests directly in the editor. Development teams that need to work in real-time alternatively can employ Visual Studio Live Share.

A publish experience in Visual Studio also now has the option to generate a GitHub Actions workflow for continuous integration/continuous delivery (CI/CD) environments in Azure resources using the deployment secrets configured in a GitHub repository. GitHub Actions for Azure can now also scan Azure resources for policy violations and vulnerabilities in container images and issues involving Azure Resource Management (ARM) templates.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella told conference attendees the velocity at which applications are developed and deployed has become even more critical as organizations embrace digital business transformation in the wake of the economic downturn brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.

GitHub support for Power Apps is especially significant because it will make it easier for so-called citizen developers to collaborate with professionals developers as they jointly develop applications, he said.

Other notable updates to the Microsoft tools portfolio include a preview of an instance of the Azure Logic Apps workflow platform that can be deployed as a containerized runtime.

A .NET 5 Release Candidate is also now available, with general availability expected next month. This update adds support to smaller, faster single-file applications that use less memory when employed within microservices and containerized applications. It also includes significant performance improvements, support for Windows ARM64 and new releases of C# 9.0 and F# 5.0 languages.

Microsoft also announced several updates to App Service to make it easier and more cost-effective to migrate and modernize .NET web apps on the Azure cloud. A new Premium v3 (Pv3) App Service Plan can handle large-scale web apps, supporting more apps per instance and larger, memory-intensive apps with up to 32GB per instance. Microsoft is also making Windows Containers support in App Service generally available and will soon make Reserved Instance (RI) Pricing for App Service available to reduce costs.

Finally, Microsoft made several Kubernetes enhancements, including a preview of a start/stop cluster feature that will be added to Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS), and announced general availability of an Azure Policy add-on for AKS, which makes it possible to audit and enforce policies across Kubernetes clusters. Microsoft also made generally available Bridge to Kubernetes extensions for Visual Studio and Visual Studio Code that allow teams to develop against microservices within a running AKS cluster to enable debugging existing services without having to reconfigure or deploy a new cluster.

Nadella said keeping track of developer velocity and overall “tech intensity” within an organization is critical to success. It’s not yet clear how many organizations have put the metrics in place to measure either. However, it is clear that organizations that have yet to fully embrace best DevOps practices are already being left behind.

  • MediaOps Teams with Gary Berman to Add “CyberHero Adventures: Defenders of the Digital Universe” to Its Award-Winning Lineup of Video Series

MediaOps Teams with Gary Berman to Add “CyberHero Adventures: Defenders of the Digital Universe” to Its Award-Winning Lineup of Video Series

Hacking Victim Turned Cyber Advocate Gary Berman Joins MediaOps to Co-Produce and Distribute His Unique Show Highlighting Cyber and IT Thought Leaders Protecting the Public

Boca Raton, Fl – Sept. 14, 2020 —  MediaOps, the place to tell your story in the most powerful way, today announced it has teamed with hacking-victim-turned-cyber-advocate Gary Berman to co-produce and distribute the “CyberHero Adventures: Defenders of the Digital Universe” video podcast. The show will join MediaOps’ award-winning lineup of video programming including TechStrong TV, DevOps Unbound and CISO Talk, all on the Digital Anarchist platform.

“CyberHero Adventures: Defenders of the Digital Universe” is an educational and entertaining series based on interviews with cybersecurity and IT thought leaders who protect the public from cyber attacks. Berman conducts in-depth interviews with industry experts to discuss real-life cyber crime stories, anecdotes and lessons learned.

Berman was a victim of cyber criminals earlier in his career, when he ran his own marketing firm, which ended in the loss of his business. Berman pivoted from being a victim to becoming an advocate, and after a 25-year career in marketing, entered the cybersecurity field with a mission to protect others from suffering the life-altering consequences of being hacked. In each episode, he shines a light on all the unsung heroes who toil in anonymity to keep us safe at work, home and school.

As an advocate, Berman was challenged by the complexity of cyber technology, attempting to distill complicated technology information into a communications platform accessible not just to the cybersecurity community but also to the general public. With support from the tech community contributing real-life stories of cybercrime, Berman launched the cyber hero comics series. The “CyberHero Adventures: Defenders of the Digital Universe” show was launched from the comics.

“I am proud to join the world-class professionals at MediaOps, as the next step in accomplishing my mission. Together, we are creating a highly engaging, entertaining and informative show that will be the antidote to the ‘Zoomification’ of the cybersecurity and IT community,” said Berman.

“Gary brings a fresh, unique perspective to his cyber awareness mission. We look forward to working with him and making his show a must-watch for both the cyber community and civilians looking for sound cybersecurity advice,” said Alan Shimel, CEO of MediaOps. “Our mission is bringing quality programming to our ever-growing audience across our omniversal channels.
