  • Dave McJannet joins HashiCorp as CEO

Dave has 15 years of experience building infrastructure businesses and open source user communities. Most recently, he honed his infrastructure acumen leading go-to market strategy for the SpringSource Group at VMware, where he helped grow open source adoption and revenue by 10X and transitioned the business into the company that is now known as Pivotal Software. At Hortonworks and GitHub he developed his open source expertise and passion, and at Hortonworks he led a go-to market team that scaled revenue from near zero to $150M and an IPO.

The union of Dave’s experience in infrastructure, open source, and growing teams made him an ideal advisor to the co-founders of HashiCorp, Mitchell Hashimoto (founding CEO & Vagrant creator) and Armon Dadgar (CTO), for the past year. Mitchell and Armon learned and leveraged Dave’s expertise on go-to market operations to craft HashiCorp’s business strategy. Dave gained greater appreciation for HashiCorp’s DevOps vision for the future of infrastructure. As the relationship developed, both sides realized that the advisor relationship could be even more valuable if Dave led from within.

As CEO, Dave will focus on go-to market strategy and operations, enabling Mitchell and Armon to redouble efforts on product development as joint CTOs. Together they will accelerate HashiCorp’s already dramatic growth.

Here’s a snapshot of HashiCorp’s growth and industry recognition so far this year:

    • The company just had its first 7-figure revenue quarter after only 9 months of enterprise sales. Customers include enterprises like Conde Nast, Cisco, and Mozilla.
    • Open source downloads grew by 50% in the first 6 months of this year, adding to the community of several million monthly active users. HashiCorp’s open source user base includes technology leaders such as Stripe, Uber, Twitch, OpenAI, Pinterest, and Capital One.
    • HashiCorp’s modular and open product design fostered a rich ecosystem of partners including AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, VMware, and GitHub.
    • HashiCorp is hosting its second annual user conference – HashiConf – in Napa, California September 6-8. Speakers include Home Depot, Target, Verizon, PayPal, and Microsoft, and sponsors include AWS, Google Cloud, GitHub, and Bridgewater Associates.
    • HashiCorp was named a Cool Vendor in DevOps by Gartner and an MIT Sloan CIO Symposium Innovation Showcase finalist. Also this year, Mitchell and Armon were named to Inc’s 30 Under 30 list.

Beyond these milestones, the next stage for HashiCorp is bringing its DevOps vision to more users across open source and enterprise communities. In the software economy companies win by bringing applications to market faster than their competitors. HashiCorp’s DevOps infrastructure accelerates application delivery by aligning developers, operators, and security. This holistic view and widespread adoption defines HashiCorp as a leader in DevOps with a clear trajectory ahead.

  • Midokura Announces Robust Overlay Connectivity for Multiple OpenStack Clouds

SAN FRANCISCO – Aug. 10, 2016 – Midokura, the global innovator in software network virtualization, today announced the latest release of Midokura Enterprise MidoNet (MEM), a scalable network virtualization solution designed for Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) clouds. The new release provides the most robust network virtualization overlay solution for connectivity between multi-site OpenStack clouds, and delivers a modern Software Defined Networking (SDN) approach to container orchestration engines, including Kubernetes and Docker Swarm.

“Enterprise organizations across the globe continue to adopt Midokura’s network virtualization solution to make cloud adoption easier and to retain a tight grip over their networks and applications,” said Pino de Candia, CTO of Midokura. “Our latest iteration of the Midokura Enterprise MidoNet (MEM) technology is designed to address real market needs, including the ability to connect multiple OpenStack clouds and support the containers movement.”

The award-winning MEM technology offers an intelligent, software-based network abstraction layer between the hosts and the physical network, allowing operators to build isolated networks in software overlaying pre-existing hardware-based network infrastructure. Designed for distributed computing, MEM provides per-tenant network control so operators can create and make changes to the virtual network without disturbing the physical infrastructure via the intuitive MidoNet Manager. What’s more, MEM Insights provides end-to-end operational tools, including advanced analytics and dynamic visualization of the virtual network.

Significant new features and functionality in the latest MEM release provide enhanced scalability, simplicity and security. The new version also includes the following:

Multi-Cloud Connectivity with Router Peering. The new MEM router peering feature provides overlay connectivity between multiple sites where OpenStack is deployed, say between Data Center #1 and #2, with VXLAN tunneling. This enables direct connectivity between multiple sites, forgoing the need for constant backup procedures in other disaster recovery scenarios and reduces control traffic and broadcast storms across multiple sites.

MEM Insights with Fabric Topology. A new feature in the MidoNet Manager provides correlation of the overlay with current and historical events happening in the underlay. This feature enables real-time visualization of the fabric topology in relation to the logical switches and routers, the connectivity scheme about the virtual and physical switch ports in the underlay. This new level of insights provides the ability to examine a series of events and root causing networking issues and/or failures.

Integration with Container Orchestration. MEM delivers enterprise-class networking to any Container as a Service (CaaS) platform, beginning with Kubernetes, to make networks as agile as needed. Unlike other container networking implementations, MEM allocates subnets by namespaces, allowing for the spawning of as many pods per node as needed with no limit.

More efficient use of memory. The new MEM release includes drastic memory improvements, as memory usage has been improved by 75% for the MidoNet agent. More efficient use of memory by the VMs can lead to better application stability and improve application response time.

“The next phase for the off-premise cloud services market is the meta-cloud,” said Cliff Grossner, Ph.D., senior research director for data center, cloud and SDN at IHS Markit. “In a recent IHS Markit survey, enterprise respondents indicated they expect to use on average eight different cloud service providers by 2018, to create their own customized cloud of clouds and meet specialized needs. No doubt, solutions allowing enterprises to deploy and manage application workloads across multiple clouds will be in high demand.”

Midokura will showcase its latest MEM technology with Intel’s Open Security Controller at Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco, from August 16-18, 2016. Come see Midokura at booth #174.

The new MEM release is available immediately. To register for a free trial, visit:www.midokura.com/midonet-enterprise or contact info@midokura.com for details on support, services and cost.

  • Electric Cloud Positioned the Highest for Vision and Execution in Gartner’s New Application Release Automation Magic Quadrant

SAN JOSE, Calif., August 3, 2016 – Electric Cloud (http://electric-cloud.com), the leader in DevOps Release Automation, today announced it has been positioned by Gartner, Inc. as a Leader in its 2016 Magic Quadrant for Application Release Automation.* In its Magic Quadrant (MQ) for ARA research, Gartner analysts interviewed customers and evaluated companies for the ‘Ability to Execute’ and a ‘Completeness of Vision’ of which Electric Cloud was the highest up and farther to the right. Download the full report at (http://electric-cloud.com/resources/whitepapers/gartner-magic-quadrant-application-release-automation/).

“We are honored to be named a leader in the first-ever Gartner Magic Quadrant for Application Release Automation,” said Steve Brodie, CEO of Electric Cloud. “We feel the fact that Gartner has chosen to publish an ARA MQ validates the importance of this growing market, and believe our position in the ARA MQ speaks to our ability to help organizations of all sizes – all over the world – deliver better software, faster.”

Gartner’s highly sought-after Magic Quadrant zeros in on three critical capabilities needed in order to qualify as a contender in its industry research on Application Release Automation. They are: 1) Automation 2) Environment Modeling and 3) Release Coordination.

“IT organizations rarely manage application releases consistently across the entire life cycle, with individual efforts led by operations, development or combined DevOps teams,” noted Colin Fletcher and David Paul Williams in a July 2016 Gartner Research Report.* “ARA tools provide a combination of automation, environment modeling and release coordination capabilities to simultaneously improve the quality and velocity of application releases. These tools are a key part of enabling the DevOps goal of achieving continuous delivery with large numbers of rapid, small releases.”

Electric Cloud’s ElectricFlow is the industry’s first and only end-to-end DevOps Release Automation platform that provides native, push-button support for advanced deployment strategies (such as Blue/Green, Canary, and Rolling Deployments). ElectricFlow enables IT to frequently and reliably deploy mission-critical applications at scale and avoid service interruptions to their end users (see news release dated 7/19/16 “Electric Cloud Announces Industry’s First End-to-end DevOps Release”).

“DevOps is as much about culture as it is about technology,” Brodie adds. “To help address the cultural challenges our customers face, we launched a bi-monthly community video panel series called Continuous Discussions (#c9d9) and co-founded the twice sold-out DevOps Enterprise Summit with Gene Kim and IT Revolution. For two years in a row, these initiatives have provided environments that are conducive for leaders and practitioners in large organizations to share their experiences, discuss best practices and help each other learn and grow. These values also reflect our vision and what we’ve delivered with ElectricFlow – to help large enterprises bridge the gap between Dev and Ops.”
