SAN RAMON, CALIF. — April 13, 2017 — xMatters (www.xmatters.com), a provider of integration-driven collaboration to proactively resolve issues, and Atlassian Corporation Plc (www.atlassian.com), a leading provider of team collaboration and productivity software, today announced the results of their DevOps Maturity Survey.
To analyze the maturity level of DevOps teams, the survey measured more than 1,000 respondents in five categories, including culture and alignment, design and architecture, continuous delivery, operations and support, and testing and verification. The survey results show that while companies have embraced the culture and processes to enable DevOps, they are still struggling to achieve the full benefits.
Takeaways include:
Culture: Culture is the code that runs great teams. In the survey, 81% of Dev and Ops teams share information and tools, but often with limited access. However, only 17% provide open access to information without time restrictions, underscoring that companies must transition from tools-first to team-first organizations.
Monitoring: Organizations monitor everything, but they aren’t prioritizing and using data to improve business processes. Only 64% of teams surveyed said their monitoring systems predict issues before users are affected.
Continuous Delivery: Testing is insufficient to stop issues from reaching production. Forty-two percent of businesses report minor issues still have to be addressed after code is released. Most enterprises don’t test with production environment’s hostility or data, often leading minor issues once it’s in front of customers
Major Incident Management: Most teams lack consistent processes and rely on manual processes for keeping stakeholders informed during major incidents. Fifty percent of respondents say their tools, processes and steps vary from incident to incident. Companies are becoming more diligent at preventing major incidents, but less catastrophic issues still persist.
About 65% of companies say they are achieving the benefits they expect from DevOps, but a maturity gap remains.
“Companies are still not achieving the maturity they expected in their DevOps strategy,” stated Abbas Haider Ali, CTO at xMatters. “To open collaboration and prevent incidents from reaching live environments, companies need to chain their systems together to share data along with messages. Technology is starting to meet the culture of collaboration; however, when organizations match these two aspects of their business, DevOps will meet its promise.”
“DevOps closes on its first decade of existence with significant momentum, as the majority of organizations are sharing tools across teams and effectively breaking down silos. But it has reached a point where teams are experiencing DevOps growing pains,” stated Sean Regan, Head of Product Marketing for Software Teams at Atlassian. “The promises of DevOps are great: faster time to market, enhanced customer experiences, fewer incidents, quicker resolution times and greater innovation. But to truly reap these benefits, teams need to move beyond the tools and begin to embrace knowledge sharing.”

SAN JOSE, CA, and PARIS, FRANCE – APRIL 5, 2017 – The Jenkins project, comprised of a community of practitioners using Jenkins, announced the official release (1.0) and general availability of Blue Ocean, its dramatic new UX implementation. The anticipated launch of Blue Ocean brings a new user experience to Jenkins based on a personalized, modern design that allows users to graphically create, visualize and diagnose continuous delivery pipelines. This is more than just putting a modern face on Jenkins: Blue Ocean re-imagines the Jenkins user experience by enabling teams to more easily adopt continuous delivery. CloudBees, Inc., the hub of enterprise Jenkins and DevOps, founded the Blue Ocean project and subsequently open sourced the software.
Jenkins is the most popular automation server in use today. With continued annual growth of about 30%, the Jenkins community now has 533,839 active nodes, with more than 11 million jobs defined in Jenkins on them.
With the official release of Blue Ocean, Jenkins now allows any member of a DevOps team to adopt continuous delivery without having the expert knowledge previously required to use Jenkins. Continuous delivery pipelines are inherently complex, making it difficult for team members – from developers to IT operations to management – to get a common understanding of the progression of software through the pipeline. Blue Ocean simplifies the development of software pipelines by allowing developers to create them with a visual pipeline editor and then visualize the process flow in an intuitive way, such that the whole organization, not just developers, can understand it. Blue Ocean naturally fosters collaboration by providing a common view of the end-to-end pipeline that all team members can understand. Using Blue Ocean, team members gain a graphical overview of the entire pipeline, enabling them to quickly identify issues and then drill down to find the source of the problem. Blue Ocean is underpinned by Pipeline as Code which enables the pipeline definition to be stored with the application code and infrastructure as code; allowing teams to reproduce previous configurations and processes easily when things go wrong.
CloudBees and the Jenkins community have collaborated to architect and develop the Blue Ocean user experience with key features such as:
Visual Pipeline Editing – Team members of any skill level can create continuous delivery pipelines from start to finish using the intuitive and visual pipeline editor. No code or text editing is required. Anyone can create sophisticated pipelines with just a few clicks.
Pipeline Visualization – Enables teams to visually represent pipelines in a way anyone in the organization can understand – whether technical or not, improving clarity into the continuous delivery process for the whole organization.
Pinpoint Troubleshooting – Blue Ocean enables teams to locate automation problems instantly, without endlessly scanning through logs or navigating through many screens.
GitHub and Git Integration – Pipelines are automatically created and run for all feature branches and pull requests, with their status reported back to GitHub. The whole team has visibility into whether changes need work or are good to go. Blue Ocean provides native, in-depth integration with Git.
Personalization – Team members can make Jenkins their own by customizing their dashboard so that they only see the pipelines that matter to them.
Built with and for Declarative Pipeline – Any pipeline created with the visual editor can also be edited in your favorite text editor bringing all the benefits of Pipeline as Code.
“The Blue Ocean project has had incredibly positive feedback from the community since its inception. It brought a breath of fresh air to the working horse of developers everywhere that is Jenkins,” said Kohsuke Kawaguchi, Jenkins founder and CTO at CloudBees. “The new and very modern and intuitive UX makes Jenkins more approachable and continues to enhance the power and usability of Jenkins. It takes an organized team of contributors like CloudBees provided to the Jenkins project to drive a large effort like Blue Ocean. As CTO of CloudBees, I’m very proud that we made this happen.”
Blue Ocean’s visualization of a software delivery pipeline
Jenkins is the leading open source automation server supported by a large and growing community of developers, testers, designers and other people interested in continuous integration, continuous delivery and other modern software delivery practices. Built on the Java Virtual Machine (JVM), it provides more than 1,300 plugins that extend Jenkins to automate with practically any technology software delivery teams use.
The Jenkins community advocates the use of Jenkins to the global development community, serving as a central source for tutorials, forums and other helpful resources for Jenkins users of all experience-levels. By recognizing the numerous contributors to the Jenkins project, the Jenkins project creates and fosters a community-powered infrastructure for maintaining and further developing Jenkins. You can follow the Jenkins community on Twitter (@JenkinsCI).
NEW YORK, NY – April 4, 2017 – DigitalOcean, the cloud for developers, today launched a Monitoring service that provides insight into the resource utilization and operational health of every Droplet (cloud server). Developers can collect metrics, monitor Droplet performance, and receive alerts in one easy-to-view interface, with no configuration required.
“Our goal is to simplify the complexities of infrastructure by offering a simple and robust platform for developers to easily launch and scale their applications,” said Julia Austin, CTO of DigitalOcean. ”A Monitoring service is an important feature for developers, and we’re thrilled to be able to offer it for free regardless of the number of Droplets. In the coming year, we’ll continue to move our Monitoring service forward and introduce new capabilities for high availability, data storage, security, and networking to manage larger production workloads.”
The Monitoring service measures each Droplet’s CPU, memory, disk utilization, disk reads and writes, network traffic, and top processes. Metrics are collected at one-minute intervals and the data is retained to enable users to view both up-to-the-minute and historical data. Developers can create alert policies and receive notifications by email or Slack when usage crosses a specified threshold.

Super Humane Co-founder Josh West, a DigitalOcean customer, said: “DigitalOcean’s Monitoring service is easy to use, which was our biggest requirement. Having the ability to monitor my infrastructure and create alerts right in my dashboard saves me a lot of time so I can focus on building better applications that improve the lives of people–which ties directly into our company mission. We’ve built and run every app for our clients on DigitalOcean and we get stellar service for an amazing price.”
Enterprise Strategy Group Analyst Daniel Conde said: “Many people start monitoring too late in the game, and it’s important to start the process in pre-production and continue it as workloads scale. Identifying potential trouble spots early on will help sift out performance problems before they become critical, and it’s a good move for DigitalOcean to include a monitoring service at no extra cost within its developer-oriented cloud.”
Ovum Principal Analyst Roy Illsley said: “As developers move to the cloud and DevOps becomes the normal way of working, the tools that enable the monitoring and management of cloud resources and application performance become a significant requirement. If cloud-based (whether cloud native or just migrated to cloud) applications are going to deliver the correct balance of performance, service quality, and efficiency then the monitoring service must be integrated into the architecture.”
