  • McAfee MVISION Cloud Helps Customers “Shift Left” With Security to Increase Compliance and Reduce Risk on Microsoft Azure

McAfee Integrates Security into the DevOps Process with McAfee MVISION Cloud for Microsoft Azure

ORLANDO, Fla.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–MICROSOFT IGNITE CONFERENCE – McAfee, the device-to-cloud cybersecurity company, today announced updates to McAfee MVISION Cloud for Microsoft Azure that will help customers “Shift Left” with security to preemptively help to address compliance and risk within their cloud infrastructure. With McAfee MVISION Cloud, security is pushed earlier into the DevOps process so that security professionals can catch risky configurations before they become a threat in production. This gives organizations the ability to confidently deploy applications in the cloud with greater speed and efficiency. Attendees at Microsoft Ignite can learn more about McAfee MVISION Cloud at McAfee booth 1841B, November 4-8 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, FL.

While Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) and Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) environments provide customers with choice and flexibility, if not configured correctly, they also potentially increase the organization’s surface area for security risks. With the new features in McAfee MVISION Cloud for Azure, security groups can integrate policy natively into DevOps processes and toolsets to discover security issues before systems are deployed to accelerate business in the cloud. New capabilities include:

    • Security Scans for Azure Resource Manager Templates: allows users to discover risky configuration issues or violations in Azure Resource Manager Templates prior to deploying resources.
    • Inline integration with the tools developers use: security checks inside the DevOps pipeline through API integration with popular tools including Microsoft Git, Github, and Azure DevOps. Security Feedback is natively integrated into the build process saving time, effort, and frustration.
    • Unified Cloud Security for Azure Ecosystem: allows developers to leverage Azure services knowing security will be built-in by design (IaaS/PaaS/Container services) aligning closely to the Cloud Security Posture Management (CSPM) best practices.
    • Preemptive Risk Avoidance: improves compliance with regulatory frameworks and reduces the likelihood of data loss, abuse or fines associated with improper security controls by highlighting security findings before they become security incidents.

Shifting Left gives organizations the ability to avoid common security-related issues. According to Cloud-Native: The Infrastructure-as-a-Service Adoption and Risk Report, 99 percent of IaaS misconfigurations go unnoticed. Most IaaS, PaaS, and Container configuration audit tools focus on evaluating the risk of resources that are already live. Scanning systems once they are live is important for detecting configuration drift, but it also allows risks from misconfiguration to be exposed until they are discovered and remediated. If left unfound, these issues are then recreated when the suspect templates are used to provision more systems resulting in a proliferation of real risk in large numbers of live systems. Potentially, this problem is further repeated across the many development teams in the organization.

“Developers increasingly leverage modern DevOps tools to operate at the “speed of cloud” to help transform their organizations,” said Rajiv Gupta, senior vice president of Cloud Security, McAfee. “By integrating with the DevOps tools, McAfee MVISION Cloud for Microsoft Azure will help security teams remove the risk of systems running with unresolved misconfigurations, reduce the workload of infrastructure teams by employing a fix once at the source and give them the ability to enact and evaluate security policies from one central location without adding friction to the development teams.”

“We’re pleased to see that McAfee is helping improve how companies operate infrastructure safely in the cloud,” said Scott Woodgate, Senior Director, Azure Security, Microsoft Corp. “With McAfee MVISION Cloud, Microsoft security professionals can gain better visibility and control over their cloud resources and detect and respond to threats earlier in the development lifecycle. Optimally, McAfee helps customers realize the full potential of Azure services by removing security as the barrier to getting things done.”

McAfee MVISION Cloud for Microsoft Teams provides an exhaustive cloud security solution that works consistently across IaaS, PaaS, Container and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) environments. It integrates quickly and seamlessly through an application programming interface (API) with the Azure infrastructure to enforce security controls that span from the IaaS/PaaS infrastructure all the way up to custom applications to help enterprises meet their security, compliance and governance requirements.

The new “Shift Left” capabilities in McAfee MVISION Cloud for Microsoft Azure are available now.

  • Applause Re-Invents AI Testing With New Solution That Detects Bias and Sources Training Data at Scale to Make Apps More Human

Boston–November 6, 2019 – Applause, the worldwide leader in digital quality and crowdsourced testing, today announced its new solution for AI training and testing. The scalable solution trains algorithms to learn quickly and tests the output to ensure those algorithms are processing and responding appropriately.

The solution leverages Applause’s global community of vetted testers to deliver the widest possible range of training inputs. The results are then tested across every possible device, location, and circumstance to identify issues and provide actionable user feedback in real time. This enables today’s leading brands to identify issues of quality or bias earlier in the development process so that they are ultimately delivering top-quality AI experiences for their customers.

“Users want AI to be more natural, more human. Applause’s crowdsourced approach delivers what AI has been missing: a diverse and large collection of real human interactions prior to release,” said Kristin Simonini, VP of Product at Applause. “Not only will this improve AI experiences for consumers everywhere, the breadth of the community also has the potential to mitigate bias concerns and make AI more representative of the real world.”

The data Applause collects from the community comes from people across numerous countries, ages, genders, races, cultures, political affiliations, ideologies, socioeconomic and education levels, and more. This broad base of data samples results in a more representative and unbiased output than if the data were sourced from a smaller group.

Not only does the Applause Community provide diverse training data sets to power algorithms – it can also test the outputs of those algorithms to check for bias. If bias has crept into an algorithm at any stage, the community can identify it when testing the output, something that a smaller or less diverse group of testers might not be able to do.

All types of AI – from virtual assistants learning how different users ask for the same thing to nutrition apps identifying food from uploaded photos – have been hampered by the same challenge: sourcing enough data to teach the machine how to interpret and respond, and then testing the output at scale to ensure the results are accurate and human-like when necessary. Applause’s solution addresses these challenges directly, across every vertical and platform.

Specifically, Applause’s new solution operates across five unique types of AI engagements:

    • Voice: Source utterances to train voice-enabled devices, and test those devices to ensure they understand and respond accurately.
    • OCR (Optimized Character Recognition): Provide documents and corresponding text to train algorithms to recognize text, and compare printed docs and the recognized text for accuracy.
    • Image Recognition: Deliver photos taken of predefined objects and locations, and ensure objects are being recognized and identified correctly.
    • Biometrics: Source biometric inputs like faces and fingerprints, and test whether those inputs result in an experience that’s easy to use and actually works
    • Chatbots: Give sample questions and varying intents for chatbots to answer, and interact with chatbots to ensure they understand and respond accurately in a human-like way.

Many AI experiences today fail to meet customers’ expectations. Applause provides rapid, iterative feedback from an end user’s perspective, at all stages of development, to ensure brands are creating an experience customers will want and use.

  • Founded by Ex-Uber Engineers, Chronosphere Emerges to Push Observability and Cloud Native Monitoring to New Levels With $11 Million in Funding

Chronosphere is the Only Monitoring Platform in the Market That Lets Customers Leverage Tens of Billions of Time Series for Higher Level Insights

NEW YORK, Nov. 05, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Today Chronosphere formally launched and unveiled its first product – Chronosphere – a platform for monitoring today’s complex technology stacks at large scale. Chronosphere enables customers to store and analyze more monitoring data than ever before and leverages that data to gain higher level insights without compromising on performance, reliability or cost. Chronosphere is currently in private beta and will be showcased at Velocity Conference this week and at KubeCon + CloudNativeCon North America later this month.

“Being able to store tens of billions of metrics is only half the battle,” said Martin Mao, co-founder and CEO of Chronosphere. “While that’s a great first step that large enterprises across sectors will need, making sense of the data and using it effectively is even more challenging and that’s where our platform is focused.”

Having met at Microsoft while working together on the initial launch of Office365, Chronosphere founders Martin Mao (CEO) and Rob Skillington (CTO) reunited at Uber during its hyper-growth phase to help the company scale up its infrastructure. During that time, the volume and complexity of monitoring data being produced and consumed increased by 10x year on year. This growth was driven by the movement from a few monolithic applications to thousands of microservices as well as the migration from hundreds of servers to millions of containers.

It quickly became obvious that neither the open source solutions Mao and Skillington were using at the time, nor commercially available solutions, could sustain the level of scale, performance and cost required by the team.

The only course of action they saw was to build a new solution – M3 – which they developed in open source from day one for the benefit of the community at large. Over the course of four years, Mao and Skillington led the team that scaled M3 to one of the largest production metrics systems in the world, storing tens of billions of time series while both ingesting and querying billions of datapoints per second. This provided Uber with comprehensive insight into its infrastructure and applications for engineers and real time visibility of the overall business for operations teams.

“We started by writing an open source streaming metrics aggregator and distributed time series database that would scale with the business and operate with zero downtime when availability zones experienced failures,” said Skillington. “At Chronosphere, the team is focused on providing something that companies can start using within minutes, while we continue to develop and maintain M3 as open source.”

After recognizing that other high growth companies struggled with the same challenges as they moved to a cloud native architecture, Mao and Skillington went on to found Chronosphere so they could bring the benefits of M3 to enterprises everywhere while continuing to support the open source community which comprises 7 of the Fortune 200 including Comcast and FedEx.

The first Chronosphere product is a hosted end-to-end monitoring platform which is built on top of M3. Chronosphere’s platform adds enterprise features such as intelligent rate limiting, resource management and security and access controls such that all teams within an organization can leverage the power of a single centralized platform. Chronosphere also provides visualization and alerting capabilities that are designed to provide for sane operability at scale given the volume of underlying data. The platform also helps auto-categorize the data and extracts higher level meaning for deeper insights.

Today Chronosphere also announced $11 million in Series A funding led by Greylock with participation from Lux Capital.

“For enterprises, there is a huge unmet need for high dimensionality (HD) metrics at scale with global reliability and low cost,” said Jerry Chen, partner at Greylock. ”Chronosphere enables enterprises to run their business at a resolution that isn’t available from existing open source and commercial offerings. It’s like using a 4K monitor to run your business: once you use HD you can’t go back to VGA.”

    About Chronosphere
Chronosphere’s mission is to enable organizations to operate reliably at scale and make precise, data-driven decisions. Chronosphere is achieving this by providing solutions that are best-in-class in scale, performance, reliability and cost without requiring organizations to compromise on any of them. Chronosphere is backed by Greylock and Lux Capital. For more information, visit https://chronosphere.io or follow @chronosphereio.

  • Logz.io Simplifies Production Troubleshooting with Release of Log Patterns

Real-Time Kibana-Native Log Clustering Rounds Out Company’s AIOps Feature Set

Boston and Tel Aviv, November 5, 2019 — Logz.io, an open source observability platform for modern DevOps teams, today announced the release of Log Patterns, the newest AI capability in the company’s AIOps portfolio. Created to streamline investigation and troubleshooting so engineers can resolve issues quickly and directly from their Kibana interface, Log Patterns automatically analyzes millions of log messages in real-time and identifies recurring patterns. As a result, engineers save time on the tasks of troubleshooting and root cause analysis, enabling them to devote more time to improving their products.

Log Patterns is Logz.io’s third AIOps feature, joining Cognitive Insights and Application Insights, which uses AI to help engineers detect critical events in applications before they impact business. While engineers rely heavily on log data for performance diagnostics and root cause analysis, due to the tremendous volume of machine data produced in modern IT environments, troubleshooting has become an inefficient, time consuming, and costly process. Log Patterns solves this issue by using advanced clustering to dissect indexed log messages into variables and constants to identify recurring patterns. This enables engineers to improve productivity as well as identify and resolve issues when they arise. Together, Logz.io’s Cognitive Insights, Application Insights, and Log Patterns provide users with a complete AIOps toolset for monitoring and troubleshooting, giving engineers full visibility into their IT environments.

“With the explosion of machine data volume and velocity, gaining visibility into the performance of distributed cloud applications is a huge challenge for engineers. Oftentimes, the data produced consists of logs that are verbose, repetitive and unimportant for investigative work, making it difficult to identify and resolve issues efficiently,” says Logz.io CEO, Tomer Levy, “Log Patterns is a powerful tool to cut through noise and reduce complex log data, making it easy for engineers to gain the right insights and effectively identify issues in their systems”

Built on top of state-of-the-art clustering mechanisms, Logz.io Log Patterns is scalable, automatic, and Kibana-native. As a result, users can ship as much data as they need and view log patterns inside Kibana’s Discover page, alongside regular log views. Furthermore, the easy-to-use platform constantly improves in response to usage patterns, continuously perfecting existing log patterns while adding new patterns as they recur.

Logz.io provides engineers with an observability platform, including a Log Analytics application that consists of a set of advanced analysis tools to make troubleshooting a much easier and faster process. With this new release, engineers will be able to sift through millions of log messages in just a few clicks to find an issue’s root cause quickly and easily. • Instana Releases APM Integration with Log Analysis Solutions Humio and Splunk with One-Click Navigation

Instana is Only APM Solution Able to Jump Directly Into Log Analysis Tool with Contextual Filtering, Creating the Quickest Path to Examining the Exact Logs Needed to Solve Problems

November 4, 2019, Orlando, FL at Microsoft Ignite conference – Instana, the leading provider of real-time application performance management (APM) solutions for cloud-native microservice applications, today announced new capabilities that make it the only application management solution that can jump right into a log analysis tool with all context of the application and component under investigation.

“IT teams responsible for deploying and maintaining today’s mission critical applications must react quickly, especially when attacking service issues,” said Pete Abrams, COO and Instana co-founder. “it’s important to have tools that work together to optimize troubleshooting. Instana’s ability to kick off a log analysis solution, with a visualization of the exact logs needed for examination significantly reduces the time it takes to actually solve problems.”

The first log analysis tools for which Instana is rolling out its one-click integration are Splunk and Humio. The interaction is handled via built-in buttons in the Instana GUI on key component dashboards (such as Servers, Containers and Kubernetes). When the button is clicked, Instana starts up an instance of the log analysis tool, along with a pre-executed analysis filter into the exact logs of the application components and associated infrastructure needing examination. TIming is also synchronized, meaning users won’t have to search for the specific log or timeframe needed to solve problems.

“Log analysis is an important part of the troubleshooting process, especially when integrated with application performance management solutions like Instana. Humio’s unlimited plan enables users to log everything, giving them autonomy to correlate Instana metrics with relevant logs from their environment,” said Cinthia Portugal, vice president of marketing at Humio. “Humio’s one-click integration and simple query language makes it easy to get started. Our modern architecture runs real-time searches on millions of streaming events per second, and because Instana pulls the exact infrastructure logs associated with problem components, getting the root-cause analysis is fast and easy.”

Unlike traditional APM tools, Instana’s automated Application Performance Monitoring (APM) solution discovers all application service components and application infrastructure, including Cloud infrastructure such as Azure, orchestration infrastructure like Kubernetes and Docker, application services and DevOps processes. Instana automatically deploys monitoring sensors for each part of the application technology stack and traces all application requests – without requiring any human configuration or even application restarts. The solution detects application and infrastructure changes in real-time, adjusting its own models and visualizing the changes and impacts to performance in seconds.

The new log analysis integration is being highlighted, along with the recently announced support for .Net Core monitoring, in software demos at Instana’s Microsoft Ignite booth (number 2404). Additional information can be found at https://instana.com/log-analysis

  • Circonus Launches the First Machine Data Intelligence Platform Built to Harness the Exploding Volume of Data in a World with a Trillion Connected Computers

Unlocks the Enormous Potential of Infrastructure and IoT Data to Drive Business Insights and Competitive Advantage

PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 29, 2019 /PRNewswire/ — Circonus, the machine data intelligence expert, today announced the launch and availability of its Circonus Platform, the first machine data intelligence platform built to provide enterprises with the ability to handle the rapidly increasing data volume and frequency seen in today’s global IT infrastructure and IoT deployments. With the Circonus Platform, enterprises can collect, store and analyze all of their machine data – without limits – ushering in a new era of extraordinary business insight and intelligence.

Machine data intelligence is the ability to gather and analyze vast amounts of machine-generated data, including data from sensors, systems, and connected devices, to achieve new levels of insight that drive smarter operations and better decision-making. Machine data is becoming increasingly valuable to enterprises. As the number of connected devices multiplies and data production costs plummet, it is unleashing data volumes that can overwhelm an enterprise, but that can also create an entirely new source of competitive advantage if harnessed. The ability to tap into this ocean of data, monitor and analyze it in real time, and collect and store it in such a way that it can be mined at will is at the heart of machine data intelligence.

Analyzing high-volume, high-frequency data is a challenge for many enterprises, and one that is only getting more ominous. IDC estimates that there will be 41.6 billion connected IoT devices, or “things,” generating 79.4 zettabytes (ZB) of data in 2025. The growing value of accurate, real-time machine data intelligence is also illustrated by core business systems that need to be running 24x7x365, with the cost of infrastructure downtime averaging $5,600 per minute, and as high as $540,000 per hour, according to Gartner. The Circonus Platform is unique in its ability to cost-effectively handle the data volume, frequency, speed, and accuracy required of today’s –and tomorrow’s – mission-critical IoT and monitoring systems.

“Circonus is changing the way that enterprises think about their machine data and its potential. For the first time, organizations can tap into the full value of all of their machine data, from servers to robots, without constraint or compromise. We believe that machine data intelligence will fuel the next wave of competitive differentiation and business value. Companies that take full advantage of this data to optimize operations, innovate product and service offerings, and create new revenue streams will be the clear winners in the ‘Internet of Everything’ economy,” said Bob Moul, CEO of Circonus.

Built on the proven and performant Circonus IRONdb time-series database, the Circonus Platform is designed to meet the requirements of the most demanding use cases in consumer and Industrial Internet of Things (IoT and IIoT), as well as operational analytics and infrastructure monitoring across a number of vertical markets.

Key features of the Circonus Platform include:

    • Industry-leading ingestion rates
    • Unlimited scale and volume
    • Millisecond frequency
    • Accurate, real-time analytics

  • Tasktop Announces Limited Release of Tasktop Viz, Offering First-ever Way of Measuring Flow of Business Value in Software Delivery

Las Vegas, Oct. 29, 2019 — Tasktop, the leader in Value Stream Integration, today announced here at the DevOps Enterprise Summit the limited availability of Tasktop Viz, the first purpose-built tool to implement the Flow Framework™.  It accomplishes this by using Tasktop’s connector technology to automatically extract the end-to-end tool data that underpins software delivery, and then translating that data into a common language that business leaders understand.

All too often, technology delivery seems disconnected from business goals, despite extensive investments in digital transformations. CIOs and business stakeholders lack a common language to measure whether investments in innovation and emerging technologies are delivering business results and struggle to precisely identify the real source of inefficiencies. Viz provides the prescription for truly transforming the enterprise, equipping IT and business leaders with the information they need to succeed.

“Adopting the Flow Framework means rising above the proxy metrics that lead so many transformations astray, and elevating the conversation to how software impacts revenue, cost of operation, customer retention, susceptibility to security breaches and the happiness and productivity of your staff,” said Dr. Mik Kersten, PhD, best-selling author of Project to Product,  creator of the Flow Framework, and co-founder and CEO of Tasktop. “Viz provides IT organizations with business-level dashboards to run their software portfolio at any scale, providing the most critical underpinning needed to steer a successful Agile and DevOps transformation.”

Viz allows enterprise organizations to see where the bottlenecks are across thousands or tens of thousands of IT staff to provoke the right conversations and measure the journey to product-centric operations. It provides:

    • Prescriptive metrics, implementing the Flow Framework for the shift from project to product with data for each value stream: end to end, ideation to revenue.
    • A turnkey solution for rapid time to value with out of the box metrics dashboards for business users.
    • Instant, integrated visibility with the Flow Metrics from the end-to-end value stream.

Viz spells the end of ETL and data lake dependencies; custom coding; data manipulation; and long lead times. Tasktop’s one-of-a-kind modeling instantly aligns, reconciles and abstracts cross-tool data into actionable measurements of flow. Customers can model each of their product value stream across a heterogeneous tools landscape, encompassing not only development to release, but inclusive of the ideation phases upstream and operation phases downstream, adding immediate value to the enterprise. All of this is accomplished without the need to code or change the workflow.

A cloud-based solution that accommodates every tool, team and process, Viz requires no premature changes to existing org structures or technical infrastructure.

“As software is eating the world, traditional enterprises and agencies are failing in their digital transformations as they struggle to compete,” said Neelan Choksi, president and COO of Tasktop. “With the introduction of Viz, we now provide these organizations with a powerful combination: Tasktop Viz shows them their bottlenecks and inefficiencies, and Tasktop Integration Hub helps remove those bottlenecks.  We are so excited to deliver the all-encompassing technology needed to meet Dr. Kersten’s groundbreaking vision of the future as detailed in Project to Product and his practical guide to get organizations to that future via the Flow Framework.”

Tasktop Viz is available in limited release today. It will be available in general release in January 2020. More about Viz can be found at Dr. Kersten’s blog post here and in a video here.
