  • Cockroach Labs Releases CockroachDB 20.1 With New Features For Simpler, Faster Cloud Application Development

Newest version of leading distributed SQL database helps developers more quickly, efficiently, and securely build elastically scalable and ultra-resilient applications in the cloud

NEW YORK, May 12, 2020 — Cockroach Labs, the company behind CockroachDB, today announced the release of CockroachDB 20.1, the newest version of the cloud-native, distributed SQL database. With new features designed to simplify and accelerate the development, deployment, and management of cloud-native applications, CockroachDB 20.1 enables organizations to build the resilient and scalable global data architectures required to successfully compete in today’s digital economy.

CockroachDB is widely used as an elastically scalable and outage resistant system of record, particularly for globally- or regionally-distributed applications. CockroachDB combines a familiar relational structure, traditional SQL, and ACID transactions with a cloud-native, distributed architecture for maximum durability and ease. The product has been gaining momentum in recent months among streaming entertainment, gaming, and retailers facing dramatically increased demand due to stay-at-home orders. The updates in version 20.1 further position CockroachDB as the ideal database for anyone looking to more easily build and manage data-intensive applications in the cloud.

With online primary key changes, monitoring updates, and enhanced support for popular development tools and languages (ORMs), CockroachDB 20.1 is more accessible, while also enabling developers to be more productive and efficient. Additional improvements to multi-region performance and security empower users to build more resilient apps and services that effortlessly scale with today’s evolving demands.

“The Cockroach Labs mission remains the same – to make operating data-intensive applications easy at any scale,” said Co-Founder and CEO of Cockroach Labs, Spencer Kimball. “CockroachDB 20.1 gives developers a database that works the way they work and takes away the operational headaches of scaling and recovering from outages. Our distributed nature already eliminates the need for manual sharding and complex schemes for failover, and makes multi-cloud deployment easy. This latest release makes the product usable by even more developers, improves monitoring, and simplifies changing the database to support changing applications.”

CockroachDB 20.1 expands the reach and capability of Cockroach Labs’ industry-leading cloud-native, geo-distributed database. More specifically:

    • Data structure can now evolve alongside applications with zero downtime.
Developers often need to change primary keys as applications grow and evolve, which can be time-consuming. Now, developers can effortlessly change the way data is organized without needing to take an application offline. CockroachDB designates how data is organized, including where it lives geographically to reduce latency and support compliance.

    • Developers can more easily monitor application issues and resolve them quickly.
Developers can view slow queries, troubleshoot queries that aren’t performing well, and monitor database stats. CockroachDB 20.1 allows you to visualize latencies between data centers to better understand performance and identify issues faster and more efficiently.

    • Applications can be built without compromise.
As part of our mission to support the greatest variety of workloads and applications, CockroachDB 20.1 empowers developers with access to a broader variety of SQL functions, including the commands that enable them to manipulate data, tables, and organization.

    • Support for more programming languages.
Traditionally developers communicate with CockroachDB in SQL. Object-relational-mapping (ORMs) are tools that enable developers to communicate with the database in other languages, including Django and SQLAlchemy for Python developers; Hibernate and jOOQ for Java developers; and GORM for Go developers. With new compatibility for ORMs, developers can now use more of their preferred tools with CockroachDB.

    • Performance and Security Updates for Resilient Apps

CockroachDB 20.1 also expands on existing capabilities that let customers easily build secure single- and multi-region applications by enhancing encrypted, full-cluster distributed backups and adding more granular Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) to CockroachDB Enterprise, and by making RBAC available in the open-source CockroachDB Core for improved security controls. Security enhancements to CockroachCloud include adding VPC peering and achieving SOC 2 Type 1 certification.

To experience CockroachDB for yourself, we’re offering a free 30 day trial of CockroachCloud. For more information about CockroachDB 20.1 and how it can support your applications, visit our website.

  • Catchpoint Is First to Integrate User Sentiment into its Digital Experience Monitoring Platform

Also released, free user sentiment monitoring solution to provide vendor visibility and speed up outage recovery

(New York, USA) – May 12, 2020 – Catchpoint™, the leader in next-generation Digital Experience Monitoring (DEM), today announced it has added ‘user sentiment’ to its advanced monitoring platform, combining Synthetic, Network, Endpoint and Real User Monitoring capabilities, making it the most comprehensive digital experience monitoring (DEM) platform available. This new integrated capability provides enterprises with broader insights into the overall health and performance of all their digital services and applications, ensuring excellent user experiences.

“In this rapidly expanding global digital economy, companies must deliver great user experiences to their customers and employees to be commercially successful. Business success is synonymous with high quality of user experience. For that reason, improving that experience is a top business priority,” said Mehdi Daoudi, CEO of Catchpoint. “User sentiment is all about monitoring and analyzing what users say and feel about your service, so it’s a critical component of DEM. With the integration of user sentiment into our platform, companies can now leverage the most complete telemetry, to increase visibility and context, resulting in fewer blind spots and a faster way to resolve digital performance degradation.”

Blog: Integrating User Sentiment into the Digital Performance and User Experience Monitoring

APM and other network monitoring tools mostly ignore the user and the last mile of a digital transaction. The quality of the user experience is the ultimate measure of success of the digital performance of a company. Measuring it requires the collection and analysis of multiple sources of telemetry. By monitoring user sentiment, alongside Synthetic, Network, Endpoint and Real User Monitoring, enterprises can cast a broad telemetry net and listen to the opinions and feelings of their customers as they are consuming digital services and apps.

“Customer and employee experience and the performance of our applications is critical to our success. Delivering the best experience possible requires that we have a complete view of the user experience,” said Samy Senthivel, Senior Digital Enterprise Monitoring Services Manager at Autodesk, Inc. “A missing piece of the monitoring puzzle from vendors has been user sentiment data. Having this analysis baked into Catchpoint’s platform will help us optimize the user experience, quickly solve performance issues and improve business performance.”

    Launch of WebSee

Additionally, Catchpoint announces WebSee.com a free resource that leverages the same user sentiment capabilities designed to help organizations and users respond to, and better deal with, service outages. WebSee collects and analyzes global user sentiment data that is then verified by Catchpoint’s platform. Users can self-report issues with a website directly on the site or download a Catchpoint browser extension, which collects user metrics for any web app, and can report these metrics in real-time. • ScyllaDB Announces 4.0 Release of Its Open Source NoSQL Database

New release adds DynamoDB-compatible API along with advanced features for consistency, streaming and management

PALO ALTO, Calif., May 07, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — ScyllaDB today announced Scylla Open Source 4.0, the latest major release of its high-performance NoSQL database for real-time big data workloads. This release marks a significant milestone, as the company has moved beyond feature parity with Apache Cassandra, now also serving as an open source drop-in, no-lock-in alternative to Amazon DynamoDB.

Scylla Open Source 4.0 builds on Scylla’s close-to-the-hardware design, which enables optimal use of modern server infrastructure. Written from the ground-up in C++, Scylla delivers performance of millions of OPS on a single node, scales out to hundreds of nodes and consistently achieves a 99% tail latency of less than one millisecond.

As a drop-in replacement for Cassandra and, now, DynamoDB, Scylla delivers better, more consistent performance, a significant reduction in total cost of ownership (TCO) and greater deployment flexibility. The production-ready new features in Scylla Open Source 4.0 extend an already impressive set of advantages over Cassandra, including scaling up to any number of cores, streaming data to 60TB meganodes, built-in schedulers, unified cache and self-tuning operations.

Performance comparisons show Scylla Open Source 4.0 delivers more than 5X higher throughput and nearly 10X lower P99 latencies than the upcoming Apache Cassandra 4.0 release. Additionally, benchmarks illustrate that Scylla is roughly 1/8 the total cost of Amazon DynamoDB.

“Scylla is faster and easier to manage than the other NoSQL databases we evaluated,” said Devin Rose, Principal Software Engineer at robotics pioneer KUKA. “We considered several other options, but Scylla proved to be much more cost-effective. We’re excited about the new features Scylla is adding. Their new DynamoDB-compatible API will make it even easier for users to enjoy Scylla’s benefits of performance, affordability and more flexible deployment options.”

New Capabilities in Scylla Open Source 4.0

    • Alternator, a DynamoDB-compatible API: Scylla 4.0 provides a production-ready Amazon DynamoDB-compatible API that lets DynamoDB users switch to Scylla without changing a single line of application code. Scylla significantly reduces the total cost of ownership, delivers lower and more consistent latencies and expands the limitations DynamoDB places on object size, partition size, etc. Developers are no longer locked in to a platform and have new open source options available to them. They can run on-premises, on their preferred cloud platforms or on Scylla’s fully managed database as a service, Scylla Cloud. They are free to access their data as they like, without pay-per-operation fees, and with more deployment options, including open source Docker and Kubernetes.
    • Lightweight Transactions (LWT): Scylla’s Lightweight Transactions (LWT) extends Scylla’s options for data consistency. By employing Paxos two-phase-commit, Scylla LWT makes operations strongly consistent.
    • Change Data Capture (Beta): Allows users to track changes in their data, recording both the original data values and the new values to records. With CDC, Scylla streams changes to a standard CQL table that can be indexed or filtered to find critical changes to data. The new API offers functionality that’s superior to both Cassandra and DynamoDB.
    • Kubernetes Operator for Scylla (Beta): Kubernetes enables automated provisioning of cloud-native containerized applications, supporting the entire lifecycle of deployment, scaling and management. Scylla Operator, now in beta with Scylla 4.0, is a Kubernetes extension for Scylla cluster management. It currently supports deploying multi-zone clusters, scaling up or adding new racks, scaling down and monitoring Scylla clusters with Prometheus and Grafana.

“Scylla 4.0 is our largest release ever, with improvements ranging from ease-of-use to new APIs and functionality and performance,” said Dor Laor, CEO and co-founder, ScyllaDB. “We welcome developers to discover the great performance Scylla offers out of the box, at a reasonable price and without lock-in.”

  • New Low-Code Innovations for Building the Apps You Need, Fast

    N

The digital imperative has accelerated for every CIO. Organizations must build apps fast to respond to ever-evolving business and economic changes. This is where the power of the Salesforce Platform shines, empowering everyone to innovate fast and scale with confidence using low-code builders. Drag, drop and deliver modern apps that increase employee productivity with Lightning App Builder. Automate processes that improve operational efficiency with Flow Builder. Ultimately, delight every employee and customer with modern experiences that do not sacrifice enterprise quality, all without having to code.

At Salesforce, our roadmap is driven by listening to our customers. And today, we are delivering two new highly requested capabilities to Lightning App Builder — Dynamic Forms and Dynamic Actions.

What are Dynamic Forms and Dynamic Actions?

Dynamic Forms is the ability to configure the behavior of forms as people fill them out.  With Dynamic Forms, every engagement is data driven and responsive in real time to user input.  Dynamic Actions further guide people through the experience with intuitive next steps. These features are a powerhouse of innovation for businesses to easily build and scale productive and engaging experiences that surface the right information at the right time to the right person without code.

Why are Dynamic Forms and Dynamic Actions Important?

Dynamic Forms and Actions are important for every company looking to transform into the digital world and embrace modern architectures. Apps of the past were static, trigger based, batch updated, and hard coded. Apps of today are dynamic, event driven, real-time, and responsive. Dynamic Forms and Actions further the power of the Salesforce Platform with its seamlessly integrated event, identity, and security model and its ability to build apps from components that serve as interchangeable building blocks. They can be combined with other platform services, including Flow, Einstein, Mobile, and Collaboration, and unlock the possibilities of a composable enterprise.

In fact, automation by Flow Builder has been surging on the Salesforce Platform. In March 2020, we’ve seen 3.25B+ processes automated, an increase of 25% YOY, and 161M+ visual screenflows launched, an increase of 83% YOY, to help with repetitive tasks like closing cases or onboarding new hires. This helps increase productivity, improve efficiency, increase data quality, and provides peace of mind for security and governance.

How do Dynamic Forms and Dynamic Actions Work?

Dynamic Forms transform static data entry forms into responsive experiences that are intuitive and easy to use. You can place fields and sections anywhere on the page to provide structure and organization for the information. Further, you can ensure people stay focused by setting rules to only show certain fields based on other field values, for example only when a checkbox is selected or when a picklist has a certain value. Experiences can be personalized further by only showing data to people based on their role, location, or other identifying information.

Dynamic Actions allow you to control the set of next steps, or actions, that are available in an experience. As with Dynamic Forms, you set the rules for when actions are shown based on field values or user information. This ensures that people only see actions relevant to them at the right time.

Here’s an example of how these innovative capabilities can be used. Job candidates provide multiple documents and pieces of information when applying for a role – including salary information, resumes, job history, legal status and references – but not everyone in the hiring process needs to see it all. Using Dynamic Forms, you can quickly add visibility rules that surfaces different candidate information to the recruiter, HR department, hiring manager and interviewers. And with Dynamic Actions, you can assign specific actions for each person involved in the hiring process to ensure they are aware of next steps to move the candidate along. After the candidate is hired, users can leverage flow automation to create an onboarding journey that helps hiring managers assign the right equipment to their new hire, ensure they receive necessary training, and provide them with credentials to access online tools.

“This is huge,” said Amber Boaz, Trailblazer and Salesforce MVP. “Dynamic Forms and Actions will allow me to create pages once and reuse them multiple times, all without any custom coding, managing permissions or moving between environments to get an app built. This won’t just make my life easier – it will make my organization more efficient overall.”

  • GoodData Updates Accelerator Toolkit to Enhance Data Analytics in Applications

New Capabilities Added to the Accelerator Toolkit, UI Library to Enable Customized and Faster Data Analytics

GoodData®, a leader in end-to-end analytics solutions, announced today several new capabilities have been added to their Accelerator Toolkit, which is used by leading enterprise companies to add data analytics into the natural flow of applications versus older, bolt-on Business Intelligence (BI) solutions.

The enhanced capabilities are another step in the process of making data understandable, relevant and actionable across product lines and entire companies.

“Achieving actionable insights from data is the make-it-or-break-it competitive advantage that all companies need, and GoodData continues to push innovation to make analytics everywhere possible,” said Zdenek Svoboda, co-founder and VP of product, GoodData.

New tools make the recently released React.js components library, GoodData.UI, even easier and faster to use. GoodData.UI was released last year to give GoodData customers more options to build analytical user interfaces in a way that no dash-boarding tool in the world does out of the box.

With GoodData.UI, developers build applications from ready-made and custom React components, and customize visualizations in just a few lines of code. No iframes are involved in the process. That means product engineers can more easily create analytics that blend into applications, and their UIs — but still with advanced capabilities. The user interfaces can also be domain specific, as opposed to the general purpose analytics tools that dominate the market.

With enhancements to the Accelerator Toolkit and continuous additions to the well- documented components in the GoodData.UI library, more companies and product designers, not just engineers, can build highly analytical applications, giving companies ultimate flexibility while cutting development time and implementation costs. Traditional embedded analytics and dashboards are not enough to drive uptake of analytics.

Additionally, with GoodData.UI, you can now display insights or existing visualizations from the GoodData platform using visual components as well as create new visual components to address specific analytical needs.

The ease-of-use created by the Accelerator Toolkit and GoodData.UI library dovetails with broader GoodData efforts to drive analytics everywhere, including with introduction of Freemium pricing last year, intended for smaller companies diving into analytics.

(Nasdaq:LOGM) today announced a new addition to its GoTo Unified Communications & Collaboration (UCC) portfolio with a new version of GoToMeeting designed with the needs of telehealth professionals in mind. GoToMeeting for Healthcare is an easy-to-use video conferencing platform that comes pre-configured with robust technical, organizational, and physical security measures so that telehealth professionals can safely and securely transmit patient data and continue to meet their own HIPAA compliance obligations.

GoToMeeting for Healthcare is designed to easily connect providers across a wide range of healthcare organizations such as hospitals, assisted living centers, urgent care and general medical facilities, behavioral health offices, social workers, dental practices, and more with their patients, faculty and staff during the stay-at-home mandate caused by COVID-19. GoToMeeting for Healthcare allows organizations to continue to provide valuable services remotely while protecting patient information and helping keep users safe by eliminating unnecessary in-person contact and travel.

“During the COVID-19 pandemic we know that it’s more important than ever to have access to healthcare workers so patients can get the medical attention they need in the safest way possible. As the Coronavirus pandemic pushes organizations to enact procedures to keep staff and patients safe, we’re here to help with the launch of our new GoToMeeting for Healthcare product,” said Mark Strassman, Senior Vice President and General Manager for Unified Communications and Collaboration at LogMeIn. “LogMeIn has long been a trusted provider in remote work technology, and we are committed to helping healthcare providers with a pre-configured solution that supports their HIPAA compliance needs and reduces unnecessary risk by offering safe and secure virtual face-to-face meetings anytime a patient needs to connect with their provider.”
