  • Exasol Research Finds 58% of Organizations Make Decisions Based on Outdated Data

Data decisions report from Exasol finds average data queries take too long to run, yet organizations need daily data insights to make informed business decisions

ATLANTA–(BUSINESS WIRE)–New research shows that 58% of organizations make decisions based on outdated data. The finding comes from a report “Accelerating data-driven decision making: 5 ways to turn crisis-mode into business as usual” commissioned by Exasol, the high-performance analytics database, published today. The report reveals that 84% of organizations are under increasing pressure to make faster decisions as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, yet 58% of organizations lack access to real-time insights.

The report further reveals that 63% of respondents confirm that daily insights are needed to make informed business decisions, but these are hampered by long query run times. 75% of respondents have to wait between 2 hours and a full day for a query to come back, and only 15% of respondents’ query run times are between 15 and 60 minutes. More than half (56%) believe they can’t make informed decisions based on their organization’s data.

“As a healthcare, retail, or financial services business you cannot afford to make decisions based on yesterday’s data,” said Rishi Diwan, chief product officer (CPO) of Exasol. “If the pandemic has made one thing clear it’s that business conditions can turn on a dime, yet 6 in 10 businesses find themselves saddled with decision-making infrastructure that is just not responsive enough. At Exasol, we enable industry leaders like Piedmont Healthcare, Zalando, or Grant Street Group to respond to evolving business conditions in real-time.”

Exasol’s report is based on a global survey of 2,500 data decision makers and reveals ample pessimism among data and IT professionals regarding the extent to which current infrastructure set-ups can power a crisis recovery. According to the research:

    • More than half (51%) believe their organization’s data infrastructure will need improvements in order to help them recover from macro or micro economic challenges.
    • The top areas highlighted for performance improvement include data literacy (84%), data infrastructure (55%) and data quality (33%). However, 85% report action being taken to improve literacy across the business, which is an encouraging sign.
    • Of the 36% of organizations that have increased the size of their decision-making teams during the COVID-19 pandemic to compensate the long time-to-insights, 86% have experienced an increase in decision-making speed.
    • More than two thirds of respondents (69%) reported receiving a higher number of data analytics requests from both multiple business departments and their end-users in recent months.

Going forward, 45% of respondents agreed that demand for data analytics will continue to rise. While the bulk of these requests is expected to come from marketing, operations and sales, demand from all areas is expected to increase, adding to the urgency for organizations to review their data-driven decision-making capabilities.

“One way that organizations compensate for the long time-to-insights during the COVID-19 pandemic is by expanding the number of people with decision-making authority,” said Mathias Golombek, chief technology officer (CTO) at Exasol. “Our research clearly shows that organizations want to increase their speed and agility regarding data-driven decisions. Data-democratization and self-service analytics across the organization are the ultimate goal, but existing legacy systems are struggling with these workloads. That’s where a reduction of query response times from hours to seconds is a game changer.”

“If you want to evolve towards a data-driven agile enterprise, you need to start with your existing data infrastructure. Not only must it be set up to support your future growth, but it should also enable data democratization,” said Philip Howard, Bloor Research. “You should also look at whether your infrastructure can deliver the time to insight – the performance – that you need. Can it scale across all your knowledge workers? Because if it doesn’t do all of these things, then it’s not supporting your business goals and you need to think about changing it.”

  • Onboard edge computing devices with SDO and Open Horizon

By Joe Pearson, Engineering Strategy and Innovation Leader, IBM Edge Computing

For many companies, setting up heterogeneous fleets of edge devices across remote sites has traditionally been a time-consuming and sometimes difficult process. This week at the Open Networking & Edge Summit conference, IBM announced that Intel’s Secure Device Onboarding (SDO) solution is now fully integrated into Open Horizon and IBM Edge Application Manager and available to developers as a tech preview.
The Intel-developed SDO enables low-touch bootstrapping of required software at device initial power-on. For the Open Horizon project, this enables the agent software to be automatically and autonomously installed and configured. SDO technology is now being incorporated into a new industry onboarding standard being developed by the FIDO Alliance.
Developers can try this out by using the all-in-one version of Open Horizon. Simply run a one-line script on a target edge compute device or VM and simulate powering-up an SDO-enabled device and its onboarding.
Both Open Horizon and SDO recently joined the LF Edge umbrella, which aims to establish an open, interoperable framework for edge computing independent of hardware, silicon, cloud, or operating system. Thanks to IBM’s participation in the LF Edge open source community, contributors in the community are helping advance the future of open edge computing solutions.
    Simplifying edge device onboarding
Our team uses the term “device onboarding” to describe the initial bootstrapping process of installing and configuring required software on an edge computing device. In the case of Open Horizon, that includes connecting it to the Horizon management hub services. We have simplified the software installation process by providing a one-liner script, so that a person can install and run a development version of Open Horizon and SDO on a laptop or in a small virtual machine.
Before SDO was available, the typical installation process required a person to open a secure connection to the device (sometimes on premises), manually install all of the software pre-requisites, then install the Horizon agent, configure it, and register it with the management hub. With SDO support enabled, an administrator simply loads the voucher into the management hub when the device is purchased and then associates the configuration. When a technician powers on the device and connects it to the network, the device automatically finds the SDO services, presents the voucher, and downloads and installs the software automatically.
    Integrating SDO into Open Horizon
The Open Horizon project has created a repository specifically for integrating the SDO project components into the Open Horizon management hub services and CLI. The SDO rendezvous service runs along side the management hub and provides a simple interface to bulk load import vouchers.
    Visit SDO GitHub
LF Edge and open source leadership
The LF Edge organization continues to strive to ensure that edge computing solutions remain open. In May 2020, IBM contributed Open Horizon to LF Edge. With Intel also contributing SDO to LF Edge, this ensures that another vital component of a complete edge computing framework is also open source.
We’re excited to collaborate with Intel to expand the deployment of applications from open hybrid cloud environments down to the edge, making them accessible, secure, and scalable for the developer ecosystem and community.
Visit our booth to watch the demo
The virtual demo will premiere this week at the conference. Videos will be available in the virtual booth and via the LF Edge YouTube Open Horizon plalist, and representatives from both IBM and Intel will be on-hand to answer questions.
    The booth schedule is:

    • Monday, September 28. The booth is open 9:00 – 10:15 AM, EST. Booth Crawl at 4:00 – 5:30 PM, EST.
    • Tuesday, September 29. The booth is open 9:30 – 11:30 AM, EST.
    • Wednesday, September 30. The booth is open 10:00 – 11:30 AM, EST.
  • ServiceNow Delivers New Native Workflows in Microsoft Teams to Power the Future of Work

ServiceNow Deepens Partnership with Microsoft to Deliver Transformative Employee Experiences

Santa Clara, Calif. – September 22, 2020 – ServiceNow (NYSE: NOW), the company that makes work, work better for people, today announced the expansion of its partnership with Microsoft to deliver elevated digital experiences that meet employees where they are. At Microsoft Ignite 2020, ServiceNow introduced new workflows embedded in Microsoft Teams to improve employee productivity with seamless self‑service and faster case resolution. Powered by ServiceNow’s leading digital workflow platform, the Now Platform, the new capabilities also improve agent productivity by enabling them to more effectively collaborate and complete key tasks in Microsoft Teams.

Teams is Microsoft’s fastest‑growing business app to date. This was true in 2018, long before lockdowns started driving up numbers for remote work and learning. As of April 29, Microsoft Teams had 75 million daily active users, up 70% from just six weeks prior. That month, Microsoft saw more than 200 million meeting participants in a single day, generating more than 4.1 billion meeting minutes.

“We’re helping customers solve for once‑in‑a‑generation challenges as they capitalize on the promise of digital transformation,” said Chirantan “CJ” Desai, chief product officer at ServiceNow. “We are doubling down on Teams to find innovative ways for workflows to elevate engagement, culture, collaboration, and productivity – no matter where people are.”

“Now more than ever, people need to stay connected and organized together from anywhere,” said Rajesh Jha, executive vice president, Experiences and Devices, Microsoft. “ServiceNow is delivering end‑to‑end Teams experiences for the new normal. For example, meeting extensibility lets service agents more easily interact with the ServiceNow platform, collaborate in group chats, channels, and conferences, and respond to incidents.”

The new capabilities announced today include:

    • Employee experiences in Microsoft Teams: Companies want to provide employees with support for whatever tools and devices they choose to use. By embedding ServiceNow natively within Teams, employees can submit requests, receive updates on in‑progress requests, take action on notifications, chat with virtual agents for automated assistance, and connect with live agents when virtual agents cannot assist – all without ever leaving Microsoft Teams.
    • Agent capabilities in Microsoft Teams: Agents spend most of their time in ServiceNow IT Service Management but want to more easily leverage the collaboration functionality in Teams to communicate with employees and collaborate with other agents. Now, agents can use Notify to launch the Teams client to engage with peers directly, push major incident updates to business stakeholders, and open direct chats with employees from an incident or request.  When used with the new Teams Meeting Extensibility feature, ServiceNow workflows enable agents to be more productive by resolving major incidents directly from within a Microsoft Teams meeting.

The new capabilities are available for select customers as part of the Beta program today.

“Organizations are relying on collaboration platforms more than ever before. Companies like ServiceNow are creating tools that complement and enhance the Microsoft Teams experience. Accenture is eager to test and deploy this new offering,” said Thomas Bruss, director of Enterprise Services at Accenture.

Today’s updates come on the heels of the ServiceNow Now Platform Paris release, which features several high‑demand Microsoft integrations to help enterprises accelerate their digital transformation journeys. Customers can use these integrations to:

    • Optimize hybrid cloud spending and usage with Microsoft Azure support for ServiceNow Cloud Insights,
    • Streamline new hire onboarding with ServiceNow employee experiences and Microsoft Azure Active Directory, and
    • Gain greater control and visibility into organizational assets with ServiceNow Software Asset Management and Microsoft Azure Active Directory.

Additionally, the ServiceNow Virtual Agent Lite plugin for Microsoft Teams, also released in Paris, offers a limited version of Virtual Agent for IT Service Management standard customers. It launched with three prebuilt conversations for common IT support requests. These keyword‑based conversations run in the web chat client and in a virtual agent messaging integration with Microsoft Teams.

Today’s announcement furthers the companies’ partnership announcement from 2019 to accelerate digital transformation for joint customers. Customers are accessing the value of this partnership with more than 25 joint solutions available between Microsoft and ServiceNow today. The companies have committed to continued ServiceNow‑Teams innovation to enable richer employee experiences from anywhere, at scale.About ServiceNow

  • “2020 Postman State of the API” Reveals API Investments Will Remain Strong

More than 13,500 respondents told Postman that while the pandemic put the world on hold, API development continues to surge.

SAN FRANCISCO (Businesswire) September 24, 2020 –– Postman, the leading collaboration platform for API development, today released the results of its 2020 State of the API Report. The annual report, the largest and most comprehensive survey of the API industry, surveyed 13,586 API developers, testers, executives, and others to understand who is working with APIs, how they are getting their work done, and where they see the industry headed.

    Key survey findings:

    • API investments have remained strong: Close to half of respondents stated that investment of time and resources into APIs will increase over the next 12 months, while another third stated that investments into APIs will stay the same, despite a challenging economic environment.
    • The pandemic has changed the world, but it didn’t stop APIs: 89% of industry members surveyed stated that their organizations offered remote work options as a result of COVID-19. Nearly a third (30.6%) said that APIs played a role in their organization’s ability to respond to COVID-19 by facilitating customer communications, powering remote work options, and quickly responding to regulatory changes and government initiatives.
    • APIs are the nucleus of digital transformation: For those working on digital transformation initiatives, 84.5% state that APIs are playing a significant role in those initiatives.

“Our annual survey reveals that the API ecosystem is expanding, investments are flowing, and momentum for an API-first philosophy is being embraced more and more, ” said Abhinav Asthana, Postman’s co-founder and CEO. “The data also shows us the importance of APIs and their role in responding to sudden and tectonic shifts in the way businesses, governments, and nonprofits operate, including pandemics.”

Over 60% of survey respondents rated themselves as 5 or better (out of 10) in terms of embracing an “API-first” philosophy, which indicates a groundswell toward API-first. The API industry also continues to touch just about every job role, from developers to management to sales, and even to the C-suite. In fact, 1 in 10 of those working with APIs today are in management roles—from the C-suite through to directors and managers.

“After a full review of the data, we found that more than 7 in 10 respondents said the most important factors they consider before integrating with APIs were reliability, security, performance, and documentation,” said Postman Chief Evangelist Kin Lane, who works with many companies that are integrating APIs. “However, less than half of the respondents indicated that pricing was an important factor.”

    Additional survey findings:

    • Lack of time (52.3%) is the number one obstacle to producing APIs. Lack of documentation (54.3%) is the number one obstacle to consuming APIs.
    • Respondents felt they should spend more time designing (11% of their time, in an ideal world) and automating testing (15%) for APIs, and less time debugging APIs (10%) than what they experience in real life: Only 8.7% of time is spent designing APIs and 11% of time is spent automating API testing, while 17% of time is spent debugging APIs.
    • REST (93.4%) is the dominant architectural style, followed by webhooks (34.4%), SOAP (33.4%) and GraphQL (22.5%). JSON Schema (75.6%) is the dominant API specification, followed by Swagger 2.0 (43.9%) and OpenAPI 3.0 (27.8%).
    • Microservices (48.7%) is the future technology respondents are most excited about, followed by Kubernetes (43.6%) and containers (42.2%).

  • Spot by NetApp Delivers Availability, Automation, and Cost Savings for Cloud Workloads With Microsoft Azure Spot Virtual Machines

New capabilities for Elastigroup from Spot by NetApp allow customers to effortlessly apply Azure Spot Virtual Machines to a broader swath of production workloads with up to 90 percent cost savings

SUNNYVALE, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–NetApp (NASDAQ: NTAP), a global cloud-led, data-centric software company, today announced the availability of Elastigroup for Microsoft Azure Spot Virtual Machines (VMs). NetApp recently acquired Spot, a leading cloud compute management and cost optimization company whose suite of tools includes Elastigroup.

Elastigroup from Spot by NetApp simplifies and automates compute infrastructure provisioning and autoscaling while allowing cloud consumers to dramatically reduce their compute spending by up to 90 percent, along with providing high availability. Elastigroup offers these benefits by reliably harnessing cloud providers’ excess compute capacity. Until now, Elastigroup supported Azure’s low-priority VMs, but now is offering full support of Azure Spot VMs. This support helps Azure customers enjoy dramatic cost savings coupled with the enterprise-level SLA of Spot by NetApp.

Elastigroup makes it easier to use multiple instance types and sizes within a single cluster for enhanced performance at scale. And built-in blue/green capabilities help customers perform easier upgrades of their clusters and continuous delivery pipelines.

“Until now, Microsoft Azure customers who wanted to use Spot VMs needed to choose workloads that were noncontinuous and not bound to specific time frames,” noted Amiram Shachar, vice president and general manager of Spot by NetApp. “Supporting Azure Spot VMs broadens NetApp’s collaboration with Microsoft Azure, building upon previous successes such as Azure NetApp® Files, Cloud Volumes ONTAP for Azure, and Cloud Insights. We are looking forward to further strengthening our collaboration with Azure to the mutual benefit of all our customers.”

As a company, NetApp is focused on building innovative solutions around Azure products and services, such as Elastigroup for Azure Spot VMs and Azure NetApp Files.

“Elastigroup has been key to keeping our cloud infrastructure management at a minimum while significantly cutting our compute costs,” said Yoni Eini, CTO and co-founder, Upsolver. “As we increase our Azure footprint, Elastigroup will be our go-to solution for running a wide range of workloads on Azure Spot VMs.”

    Benefits of Elastigroup

    • Spot by NetApp offers an enterprise-level availability SLA for fault-sensitive workloads such as web applications, microservices running behind a load balancer or application gateway, high-performance computing (HPC) workloads, and Hadoop and Spark workloads.
    • Seamless blending of optimal pricing options within a single cluster.
    • Elastigroup offers automated fallback to Pay-As-You-Go and back to Spot VMs as appropriate.
    • Heterogenous VM scaling for any VM type and size with Elastigroup automatically scaling the desired VMs without the need for creating an Azure Virtual Machine Scale Set per instance type and size.
    • Load balancers and application gateways are automatically updated to drain HTTP connections, and to register and deregister nodes as needed.
    • For enhanced continuous delivery with hassle-free blue/green deployments, Elastigroup seamlessly replaces and upgrades application versions, ensuring an extra level of high availability for workloads.
    • With cron-based scheduling, pay only for the resources needed, so teams can schedule on/off hours for their cloud compute infrastructure.
