  • Aiven bets on time series with release of first of kind Aiven for M3

Aiven for M3 meets market demands for a time series database as data volume and complexity increase.

HELSINKI, Finland — October 12, 2020 — Aiven, a leading technology company that combines the best open-source technologies with cloud infrastructure, announced its 11th managed service, Aiven for M3. With a unique and purpose-built architecture, M3 enables large-scale time series workloads. Likewise, it will be the first of its kind as a managed service: an open-source, highly-available, horizontally-scalable time series database that opens new possibilities for all organizations, regardless of their size.

“Launching Aiven for M3 reflects our promise to provide Aiven customers the latest, most advanced technologies that’ll enable them to not only strengthen their respective business processes and use cases, but to evolve them,” said Hannu Valtonen, co-founder and chief product officer at Aiven. “What’s more, Aiven for M3 could be to time series data what Aiven for Apache Kafka was to data streaming, that providing accessible tech will increase the speed at which we push the underlying use case forward.”

Data volumes continue to balloon as forward-looking concepts and technologies like IoT and containerization are created and developed, revealing a growing market appetite for a time series database to manage the data scale and complexity rooted in monitoring and analytics workloads.

Built to handle Uber’s massive scale, M3’s battle-tested capabilities were what initially piqued Aiven’s interest in the technology because its own growth required a stronger monitoring backbone for the customer nodes under its management, which have grown exponentially — fivefold in the last year alone.

“The exponential growth of our business and the underlying operations metrics and monitoring infrastructure that is critical to our fully-automated, self-healing functionality requires a robust solution, said Aiven VP of Tech Ops Mika Eloranta. “We selected M3 because it’s truly Open Source, properly implements clustering, and is highly adaptable to various high-throughput, real-world use cases.”

This virtuous circle, whereby Aiven can improve its service offering with the very tech that it provides as managed services means that its customers have unmatched access to a cohesive mix of advanced open-source tech that can be used to develop comprehensive solutions to evolving data challenges.

Aiven for M3 exemplifies this with out-of-box support for Prometheus, InfluxDB and Graphite protocols, integrations with popular visualization and metrics platforms such as Grafana, Prometheus and Jolokia, and advanced features such as multi-az placement, Terraform support and VPC peering.

Currently in Beta, Aiven for M3 will be generally available in mid-November.

  • Lightstep Announces New GitHub Action, Bringing Observability Data Directly to GitHub to Avoid Problematic Code Deploys

    • GitHub Actions is modernizing the developer workflow by automating tasks in the same place developers code and collaborate on pull requests
    • Lightstep will surface relevant Observability data within the existing GitHub workflow to ensure developers are shipping high-quality software

cdCON — October 7, 2020 — Lightstep, the cutting-edge distributed tracing tool founded by former Google engineers, today announced their new GitHub Action called the Lightstep Pre-Deploy Check. By automatically bringing relevant Observability data directly into the development workflow on GitHub, software developers can ensure the quality and performance of their software, before it’s actually deployed.

“This is a big shift left for how developers think about Observability,” said Daniel Spoonhower, Co-Founder and CTO of Lightstep. “DevOps is about acknowledging that it’s not good enough to ship code without worrying about how it performs in the real world. I very much believe in ‘you build it you own it’ — but I also believe that we need to make this easier by baking solutions into existing development workflows as much as possible, by automating as much as possible.”

According to the State of Software Quality 2020 report produced by OverOps, two out of three developers spend at least a day per week troubleshooting issues in their code, and are frustrated by the unknowns that come with deploying new code into cloud-based, distributed architectures. Despite the 87M+ merged pull requests per GitHub’s annual Octoverse report, to date there has been zero visibility into the health status of a system within a pull request.

“Automatically confirming production systems and services are healthy before deploying code that can impact them is a great step towards ensuring reliability, without compromising developer velocity,” said Chris Patterson, Product Manager for GitHub Actions at GitHub. “By bringing Observability data directly into the pull request process on GitHub, developers can avoid context switching, gain more ownership of how their code performs in production, and better support DevOps within their organization.”

The Lightstep Pre-Deploy Check leverages publicly-available APIs from Lightstep to provide a deployment risk summary ahead of a code change going to a production environment. The information from the risk assessment is then automatically pulled directly into the GitHub pull request through a GitHub Action.

Lightstep has also partnered with Rollbar and PagerDuty to bring even more information directly into GitHub. For example, if Lightstep completes a risk assessment and determines that the system is unhealthy, it can automatically take a snapshot of the production behavior in real-time and send it to PagerDuty, so the full details of the issue can be examined even if the developer was not there at the moment the issue started.

“We see direct value to developer effectiveness with the Lightstep Pre-Deploy Check,” said Steve Gross, Sr. Director, Strategic Ecosystem Development at Pagerduty. “Now developers automatically have PagerDuty on-call details inside of a pull request, alongside system health details, at their fingertips in one screen.”

    About Lightstep

Lightstep’s mission is to deliver confidence at scale for those who develop, operate and rely on today’s powerful software applications. Its products leverage distributed tracing technology – initially developed by a Lightstep co-founder at Google – to offer best-of-breed observability to organizations adopting microservices or serverless at scale. Lightstep is backed by Redpoint, Sequoia, Altimeter Capital, Cowboy Ventures, and Harrison Metal and is headquartered in San

  • Mendix and Deloitte Canada Announce Strategic Alliance to Build Low-Code Digital Solutions for Enterprise Customers

World’s leading professional services firm will create Canadian-based Centers of Excellence to train and certify 50 Mendix software developers

BOSTON – OCTOBER 8, 2020 – Mendix, a Siemens business and global leader in low-code application development for the enterprise, today announced a strategic alliance with Deloitte Canada, a member firm of the world’s largest professional services firm, to utilize the Mendix low-code software development platform on behalf of enterprise customers seeking business transitions enabled by technology. To build capacity and expertise, Deloitte’s system engineering group has established centers of excellence (CoE) across the country to certify and deploy 50 Mendix rapid software developers to work on large-scale application development for customers in the financial services, insurance, logistics, public sector, and energy resource markets.

“In order to thrive, companies we serve need to transform ongoing business operations, to increase efficiencies or to target new revenue streams,” says Anthony Chan, a partner and the national systems engineering leader at Deloitte Canada. “Deloitte is a champion when it comes to embracing the trend of using low-code to develop enterprise software for key business operations. The demand for IT services is rapidly increasing, and this strategic alliance helps us bridge the low-code talent gap and unlocks our ability to bring digital solutions quickly to market.”

A paradigm shift for global system integrators

One challenge facing legacy enterprises originally chartered in the 20th century is to engineer new ways to provide value and tailored services in the 21st century marketplace. Widespread adoption of next-generation technologies such as cloud-based software deployment, mobile access, microservices architecture, AI enablement, and chatbots has heightened expectations for frictionless user experiences across multiple channels by enterprise customers and workforce employees.

Low-code has proven itself to be a platform that readily supports integration of these and other next-generation technologies, while at the same time facilitating tremendous cost efficiency throughout the application lifecycle. A recent Forrester: Total Economic Impact (TEI) Report highlighted the financial benefits for a hypothetical composite organization — an amalgam of four real-life enterprises using Mendix low-code for an average of almost six years — gained by building and deploying software with the Mendix low-code platform. Those benefits include an estimated $8.1 million in savings over three years for application delivery and an additional $3.3 million in profits from accelerating the time to market for new products and services.

Future-proofing legacy enterprises with low-code deployment

Nick Ford, chief technology evangelist at Mendix, added, “Our alliance, and Deloitte’s commitment as manifest in the new Centers of Excellence, will empower Deloitte to deliver all of the benefits of the Mendix low-code platform to its enterprise clients. A wider pool of developers, enhanced collaboration, accelerated time-to-impact, automation of routine IT maintenance and ‘plumbing’ chores, and greater efficiency throughout the entire application lifecycle combine to deliver real enterprise digital transformation.”

The strategic collaboration between Deloitte Canada and Mendix builds on the successful alliance in other regions of the world, including the U.S. Recently, Deloitte participated in the Mendix World 2.0 conference that explored groundbreaking uses of Mendix’s low-code software development platform. On September 2, Peter Fever, managing director, Deloitte U.S., moderated an executive roundtable discussion with finance executives on “Banking’s Perpetual Digital Transformation.”

    Background

In a pandemic-disrupted world, software is the new lifeblood of our daily lives and the connective tissue holding together the global economy. However, traditional software development takes far too long and very often fails to deliver the results business needs and users love. Even prior to COVID-19 there were simply not enough professional software developers in the world to build all the software currently required. The global pandemic has accelerated and exacerbated what was already a software and business crisis. Enter low-code software development. Low-code from Mendix is a powerful enterprise-grade visual development approach empowering citizen and professional developers to make cloud-native applications more than 10X faster for web and mobile using drag-and-drop components and model-driven logic – all through an intuitive graphical user interface.

Responses from nearly 700 IT leaders and practitioners confirm organizations are embracing SaaSOps as a proven framework for their SaaS challenges

NEW YORK, Oct. 7, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — BetterCloud, the leading SaaSOps platform for managing and securing the digital workplace, today released its first SaaSOps report: “2020 State of SaaSOps.” Among its many significant findings, the report found that a rise in SaaS adoption is prompting concerns over operational complexity and risk.

Since 2015, the number of IT-sanctioned SaaS apps has increased tenfold, and it’s expected that by 2025, 85 percent of business apps will be SaaS-based. With SaaS on the rise, nearly half (49 percent) of respondents are confident in their ability to identify and monitor unsanctioned SaaS usage on company networks—yet more than three-quarters (76 percent) see unsanctioned apps as a security risk. And when asked what SaaS applications are likely to hold the most sensitive data across an organization, respondents believe it’s all apps including cloud storage, email, devices, chat apps, password managers, etc.

Respondents also highlighted slow, manual management tasks as a prime concern when managing SaaS environments. IT organizations spend over 7 hours offboarding a single employee from a company’s SaaS apps, which takes time and energy from more strategic projects.

“In the earlier part of the year, organizations around the world were faced with powering their entire workforces from home and turned to SaaS to make the shift with as little disruption to productivity as possible,” said David Politis, CEO, BetterCloud. “Up until this point, most companies were adopting a cloud-first approach for their IT infrastructure — that strategy has now shifted to cloud only. But SaaS growth at this scale has also brought about challenges as our 2020 State of SaaSOps report clearly outlines. The findings also show increased confidence and reliance on SaaSOps as the path forward to reigning in SaaS management and security.”

Click here to download the report.

    Among the key findings:

    • On average, organizations use 80 SaaS apps today. This is a 5x increase in just three years and a 10x increase since 2015.
    • The top two motivators for using more SaaS apps are increasing productivity and reducing costs.
    • Only 49 percent of IT professionals inspire confidence in their ability to identify and monitor unsanctioned SaaS usage on company networks—yet more than three-quarters (76 percent) see unsanctioned apps as a security risk.
    • The top five places where sensitive data lives are: 1. Files stored in cloud storage, 2. Email, 3. Devices, 4. Chat apps, and 5. Password managers. But because SaaS apps have become the system of record, sensitive data inevitably lives everywhere in your SaaS environment.
    • The top two security concerns are sensitive files shared publicly and former employees retaining data access.
    • IT teams spend an average of 7.12 hours offboarding a single employee from a company’s SaaS apps.
    • Thirty percent of respondents already use the term “SaaSOps” in their job title or plan to include it soon.

For the report, BetterCloud surveyed nearly 700 IT leaders and security professionals from the world’s leading enterprise organizations. These individuals ranged in seniority from C-level executives to front-line practitioners and included both IT and security department roles. The respondents’ companies represented a wide range of company sizes and industries—most were established businesses with significant experience using SaaS apps. Almost all of those surveyed use either G Suite or Office 365 as their primary cloud productivity suite.

  • Humio Named A 2020 Gartner Cool Vendor

Humio Recognized in the 2020 Gartner Cool Vendors in Performance Analysis Report

Seattle, WA Oct 7, Humio, the only log management platform enabling complete observability for all streaming logs in real time and at scale, self-hosted or in the cloud, today announced that Gartner has recognized it as a Cool Vendor based on the October 5, 2020 report titled “Cool Vendors in Performance Analysis”* by Padraig Byrne, Federico De Silva, et all.

Gartner writes, “Performance analysis vendors increasingly provide advanced analytics, AIOps and improved scalability in response to the growth in velocity and data complexity in IT environments. I&O leaders should consider how innovative vendor approaches can deliver enhanced insight into their IT environments.”

“We consider Humio’s inclusion in the Cool Vendor report by Gartner confirmation of our modern, innovative architecture and approach to log management and as a sign of our growing adoption with enterprise customers,” said Geeta Schmidt, CEO of Humio. “As organizations move towards highly dynamic architectures, the requirements for monitoring and processing increasing amounts of data change dramatically. The amount of data collected by customers should never be limited. Humio changes the game by enabling customers to collect all of their data thanks to our lowest total cost of ownership, industry-leading unlimited plans, minimal maintenance and training costs, and remarkably low compute and storage requirements.”

The importance of collecting and querying all log data has proven more imperative than ever with increasing threats and attacks such as the recently announced Zerologon. The bug, which has been around since at least Windows Server 2008, allows an attacker to take control of any part of an enterprise Windows infrastructure or the entire network–in a matter of seconds. With the Humio query, customers can easily query all of their Windows logs to determine, also in a matter of seconds, whether they’ve ever been impacted by the Zerologon vulnerability. Humio’s in-memory state machines enable sub-second search results for thousands of concurrent live queries allowing analysts, developers, and security personnel to interact with their data as it arrives in real time.

Humio’s customers are large enterprises and organizations across varying industries including financial services, education, healthcare, communications, and cloud-based service providers such as Aruba HPE, Bloomberg, Decisiv, Michigan State University, Netlify, SpareBank 1, and Vijilan. To further increase interoperability and performance, the company has expanded its ecosystem to include AWS, Corelight, Instana, Kloia, Netic, Pondurance, SOC Prime, Tines and many others.

  • Flexential® Announces Continued Investment in Data Protection with Scalable, Cost-Effective Solution for Storing Long-Term Data

Flexential Archive Storage powered by Wasabi expands to serve growing data needs across the U.S.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Oct. 6, 2020 – Flexential, a leading provider of data center colocation, cloud and connectivity, today announced the addition of Flexential Archive Storage to the company’s growing family of data protection offerings. The new solution, designed to enable businesses to store long-term unstructured data from any source in an affordable, fast and straightforward way is powered by Wasabi, the cloud storage platform that is 80 percent less expensive than its nearest competitor. This new solution marks Flexential’s continued investment in data protection and the evolution of products designed to help businesses during this new “Working from Home” era.

“At Flexential, we understand that not all data is created equal,” said Chief Operating Officer of Cloud and Managed Services, Mike Fuhrman, Flexential. “Our ultimate promise to our customers is to give them flexibility when it comes to their data. With Flexential Archive Storage, we are fulfilling that promise by extending our data protection portfolio, making it possible to store data according to its criticality to the business.”

Flexential Archive Storage is specially designed for unstructured data such as video footage, backup solution tape replacement, images and documents that are not retrieved often but need to be stored safely and securely. Many businesses and organizations store data not accessed frequently due to data retention policies or legal mandates that govern how long data must be retained.

Flexential Archive Storage provides a scalable and cost-effective option that meets regulations for data protection and retention while also keeping the data accessible as needed. Unlike other providers in this space, the billing model is simple. Customers pay only for the space reserved and pay no charges for API requests or additional network fees, making the service simple and predictable. This cost savings is critical as the requirement to store data will likely multiply for businesses in the coming years as Gartner predicts1(Gartner subscription required), “By 2024, enterprises will triple their unstructured data stored as file or object storage from what they have in 2019.”

Flexential and Wasabi are also announcing a joint offering located in Flexential’s Dallas – Plano data center, to expand the Wasabi service to the southern and central parts of the United States. This new Central Region will service expanding data needs in the central and southern U.S. and complement Wasabi’s existing footprint in the west in Oregon and in the east in Virginia.  The combined solution empowers enterprises to store more data for less and reduce IT budgets, so businesses can focus their time and capital on other core objectives. Flexential also offers customers the ability to connect directly to the Wasabi Vaults in the West, Central and Eastern regions through the FlexAnywhereTM network providing a faster, lower latency and more reliable connection.

“With Wasabi, Flexential can offer hot storage performance for archival storage with really simple pricing. Storing large amounts of archival data can be a burden for any company, particularly those where data must be stored for long periods of time to meet regulatory requirements. Since there’s less need for complex tiers of storage, applications and architecture are greatly simplified,” said David Friend, Wasabi CEO. “Flexential is one of the first data center providers to add cloud storage as a core service for their data center customers. Every customer needs some amount of storage and Flexential can now provide that storage at a cost that is lower than owning and operating traditional hardware storage.”

Flexential Archive Storage is part of a broader portfolio of object-based storage options that gives customers the flexibility to subscribe to the storage solution that best suits their data needs according to its criticality to the business and retrieval and compliance requirements. This enhancement to the portfolio makes Flexential a one-stop shop for data protection requirements, outfitting a wide range of data protection use cases.
