  • Sysdig Closes $68.5 Million in Series D Funding to Enable Enterprises to Secure and Monitor Containers and Cloud-Native Applications

Investment fuels company leadership in delivering converged security and monitoring solutions for enterprises adopting containers and microservices

SAN FRANCISCO, September 12, 2018 –Sysdig, Inc.,the cloud-native intelligence company, today announced it raised $68.5 million in series D funding, led by Insight Venture Partners, with participation from previous investors, Bain Capital Ventures and Accel. This round of funding brings Sysdig’s total funding to date to $121.5 million. Sysdig will use the funds to extend its leadership in enabling enterprises to operate reliable and secure containerized infrastructure and cloud-native applications.

Suresh Vasudevan, CEO at Sysdig, authored a blog post with more information on Sysdig’s funding.

Sysdig offers enterprises the first unified approach to container security, monitoring, and forensics. Unlike traditional approaches, the Sysdig Cloud-Native Intelligence Platformwas built with an understanding of the modern DevSecOps workflow across Kubernetes, Docker and both private and public clouds. Sysdig’s open source forensics technology, Sysdig, and its open source security project, Sysdig Falco, have a community of millions of users, and provide the foundation for a rich, commercial product set. Dozens of Global 2000 enterprises are Sysdig customers today, including many of the world’s largest financial institutions, media companies, cable companies, technology companies, and government agencies.

451 Research predicts the cloud-enabling technology market to grow to $39.6B through 2020, and containers are predicted to be the fastest growing segment of that market at 40%. Gartner predicts that “by 2020, more than 50% of global organizations will be running containerized applications in production, up from less than 20% today.”[1]

“As enterprises accelerate their move to cloud-native applications, they recognize the need for a new breed of solutions that will enable them to meet performance, reliability, security, and compliance requirements,” said Richard Wells, Managing Director at Insight Venture Partners. “Sysdig’s novel approach of tapping an entirely new data source that provides both security and monitoring for container-based applications has proven more effective, more scalable, and higher ROI. That significant technological advantage combined with an experienced management team led by CEO Suresh Vasudevan gives Sysdig a strong position in the marketplace and we are excited to welcome them to the Insight portfolio.”

Sysdig launched Sysdig Securein October of 2017, cementing the Sysdig Cloud-Native Intelligence Platform as the only solution to offer unified security, monitoring, and forensics with native Kubernetes and Prometheus integration for containers and microservices. Last quarter, Sysdig expanded on the deep container visibility Sysdig provides to create Sysdig Secure 2.0, which brings vulnerability management, more than 200 compliance checks, and security analyticsto cloud-native environments and microservices for enterprise customers. Sysdig Secure is the first container security offering to take a data-driven approach across all aspects of the container lifecycle.

“Enterprises are adopting cloud-native technology for its speed of development, multi-cloud scaling capabilities, and lower total cost of ownership,” said Suresh Vasudevan, CEO at Sysdig. “But, they are hitting roadblocks with old school security and monitoring products. To be successful, these organizations need new solutions that are cloud-native. Sysdig has emerged as the only solution that delivers enterprises the complete set of capabilities needed to protect an environment, ensure that it is running smoothly, and meet compliance requirements. Sysdig delivers it all, both in the cloud and on-premise, in order to grow with companies as they undertake this journey.”

This round of funding further accelerates the strong momentum and rapid growth Sysdig has experienced over the last year. Downloads of Sysdig Falco have roughly tripled over the last 12 months and active users of the Sysdig SaaS offerings have grown nearly six times year over year. Last month, Sysdig opened a second headquarters in Raleigh, North Carolina to keep up with company growth while the company also continues to scale its offices in San Francisco, Belgrade, and London.

In addition to its global growth, Sysdig has expanded its executive team with the hiring of Suresh Vasudevan as CEOin April and Larry Castro as VP of finance and corporate operationslast month. Sysdig continues to deliver on its commitment to leading the industry by collaborating with the Cloud-Native Computing Foundation, the PCI Security Council, and industry partners and by contributing to the development of security recommendations for modern infrastructure.

  • Electric Cloud Positioned Furthest for Completeness of Vision in Gartner’s 2018 Magic Quadrant for Application Release Orchestration

Company’s ElectricFlow platform provides a safe and reliable way to scale software delivery quickly, in an adaptive manner, and with unprecedented actionable insight

SAN JOSE, CA, September 12, 2018 — Electric Cloud (http://electric-cloud.com/), the leader in Adaptive Release Orchestration and Continuous Delivery, today announced it has been positioned as a Leader in Gartner’s 2018 Magic Quadrant for Application Release Orchestration for the third year in a row.* In its Magic Quadrant for ARO research, Gartner analysts evaluated companies for their ‘Ability to Execute’ and ‘Completeness of Vision.’ Electric Cloud was positioned the furthest for its ‘Completeness of Vision.’

    Download the full report: https://bit.ly/2N1nVjT

“We believe being named a Leader in Gartner’s research for a third year in a row, and for being positioned the furthest for Completeness of Vision, underscores Electric Cloud’s commitment to market-leading innovation,” said Carmine Napolitano, CEO of Electric Cloud. “ElectricFlow provides game-changing control and visibility into complex enterprise pipelines and releases – across any combination of monolithic, mainframe and microservice-based applications. As our customers continue to make big bets on DevOps, we help them safely adapt to, and take advantage of, the massive and continual technological shifts underway. We work hard every day to empower our customers to transform software releases from a chore into a true competitive advantage.”

    From Automation to Orchestration

Last year’s Magic Quadrant was focused on Application Release Automation. This year, Gartner expanded the scope of focus from Automation to Orchestration.

Gartner’s 2018 Magic Quadrant and related Critical Capabilities for Application Release Orchestration evaluated vendors based on future market requirements capabilities, including 1) Deployment Automation, 2) Pipeline and Environment Management, 3) Release Orchestration, 4) Scalability and performance, and 5) Usability and access.

Against these criteria, Electric Cloud was positioned the furthest for its ‘Completeness of Vision.’

“To stay relevant, organizations are making big bets on DevOps – and not just in one team, but across many teams. As application architectures and toolchains shift, and more frequent development cycles overwhelm infrastructure and operations teams, digital transformations are put at risk,” added Napolitano. “We’re honored to be selected by so many industry leading companies to orchestrate their software delivery pipelines to enable faster, better, and safer software delivery at scale. Our users trust us with their core business – and we’re here to deliver, continuously.”

Transforming Release from a Chore to a Competitive Advantage

Today, the pace of software innovation equates to market success, and releasing high-quality software, securely and efficiently, is a critical need for all companies. There are a lot of ways to do ARO, but customers are increasingly choosing ElectricFlow to enable their releases. Electric Cloud is realizing 220 percent year-over-year new business growth with more than 100 percent net customer retention, signaling strong customer satisfaction and expansion.

One of our recent customers, a Fortune 100 financial services firm, explains how they quickly ramped up their DevOps transformation with ElectricFlow. “We were able to get started and implement several useful pipelines very quickly,” said the DevOps Technical Lead. “We have found it to be quite adaptable, and the pipelines we’ve created are easy to extend, so we’re well positioned to incorporate new architectures, technologies and tools that our developers recommend – without the fear of anything breaking downstream. This ability to continuously adapt gives us an unfair advantage in the market place – an advantage which we will use to serve our end user customers reliably and securely, at any scale.”

This company, along with many other market leading customers including Edward Jones, TIAA, Intel, Lockheed Martin, Phillip Morris, Terradyne, Cisco, GM, and E*Trade choose ElectricFlow because it uniquely provides:

    • A way to implement and share secure, repeatable and adaptable pipelines that deliver mainframe, monolithic and microservices applications
    • Unprecedented, actionable insight into the health and status of enterprise releases, without requiring manual data collection and analysis
    • A solution that will reliably scale as they roll out DevOps processes across their entire organization

  • Rookout Workspaces brings teamwork to Production Debugging

Rookout has released the first tool to collaboratively debug code on demand, including in production. Rookout’s Workspaces feature works like “Google Docs” for debugging live code, letting developers safely share an IDE tracking down issues and collecting data together.

Inside a Rookout Workspace, a developer can set ‘non-breaking breakpoints’ in the live code, without any restarts, redeploys or having to write any new code. The data collected from the ‘breakpoint’ is shared with any other team member who shares the Workspace. Team members can safely create their own ‘non-breaking breakpoints’ into the Workspace and debug together on the server without any screen-sharing or giving access to a local machine. developers can also define separate workspaces if they want to work independently on the same code without getting in each other’s way.

Rookout Workspaces also let developers define a specific section of their environments for data collection. A Workspace can be set to target ‘production’ or ‘staging’, a specific client, a single process or a single IP address. Rookout only collects data from inside the defined Workspace, cutting down on wasteful collection and filtering.

Academic research shows “Pair debugging”, where two or more people work together to find issues in code, is a strong tool for finding challenging bugs. However, traditional debuggers run on a solitary user’s local environment and have very limited, if any, collaboration capabilities.

Rookout Workspaces makes deep cross-company collaboration possible. For example, customer support team members can work directly with developers in a Workspace to solve a live customer issue, or data analysts and product teams could use a Workspace to optimize the code together.

“As a developer, every issue you’re trying to handle resides within a specific ‘space’,” said Rookout co-founder and CTO Liran Haimovitch. “The ability to tag, segment, include and exclude parts of your environment is crucial in a world of data overload, giving you just the data you need exactly when you need it, and letting you share it with anyone else who needs it too.”

“Rookout’s Workspaces is built for a world where distributed software teams have to debug distributed systems,” said Or Weis, Rookout co-founder and CEO. “Distributed, collaborative debugging is quickly becoming a must with modern software. Workspaces let developers focus only on the environments they want based on their own business logic, and helps different parts of a company work together to safely and quickly resolve bugs.”

  • Startup Introduces App to Bring Predictability to the Development Process

Anaxi brings easy tracking to the 25 million active GitHub repositories

SAN FRANCISCO, September 11, 2018 — More than 1.5 million organizations have 25 million active repositories (an average of 17 per organization) on GitHub, the world’s largest community for developers to share, and build better software — with no good way to keep track of everything. Anaxi, a startup co-founded by serial entrepreneurs and veterans of Apple and Docker, today launched an app that gives engineers and managers visibility on their software development projects and processes.

“It seems every other discipline within an enterprise can be tracked, scored and improved empirically except the software development process,” said Marc Verstaen, co-founder and CEO of Anaxi. “Now for the first time, engineers and managers can see where and how bottlenecks occur — what is working and what isn’t — leading to far more predictable development schedules and product launches.”

That is more important than ever before in today’s digital economy – with the Internet, e-commerce, Internet of Things and mobile phones – when technology is viewed as a competitive advantage with every company developing its own software.

“It was a huge challenge supporting the rapid growth of Docker’s open-source community in terms of structuring and managing the GitHub project,” said Sam Alba, until recently the vice president of engineering, Docker. “Anaxi resolves this issue by providing a holistic view to help get better control of the software development process.”

Anaxi’s team conducted a Net Promoter Score (NPS) survey of 129 companies, assessing their satisfaction about the way priorities are handled in the engineering organization, and the results revealed very poor performance with scores of -25 for all companies, and -38 for enterprises. The main complaint was visibility. Backed by this data and its own experience, Anaxi’s team built a first version iPhone app, available free at the App Store, which has the following capabilities.

    • Issue Reports

Anaxi allows users to build reports on top of their GitHub issues. Reports list issues with specific filters: a specific priority, milestone, label, status, or assignee. Users gather reports within folders, and in one glance have a view of different GitHub projects including how issues are distributed across the team and how many blockers the team has to solve before a milestone.

    • Pull Request Reports for changes pushed to GitHub

Users have the ability to create reports that list pull requests with specific filters: labels, status, author, assignee or reviewer. This enables tracking of pull requests, for example, those created or to be reviewed by specific individuals or teams.

    • Visual Status Indicators

Once an issue or pull request report has an alarming state, for instance, too many blockers for a project expected to be released in a few days, the report will be displayed in red. Its color will be replicated in its enclosing folder, if any. In this way, users can identify reports requiring their attention at a glance. Healthy status is indicated in green and caution in orange giving users an overall view of status at a glance.

    • Label Categories

GitHub lets users define their labels in any way they want. Still, a best practice has emerged where projects will categorize their labels with /, such as “area/networking” in which “area” is the category for the “networking” label value. Anaxi reinforces this practice by differentiating label categories.

    • Data Confidentiality

Anaxi founders understood the need for confidentiality about access to their GitHub issues, so the Anaxi app is designed to work without connecting to any Anaxi servers. It connects directly to the users’ Github repositories and builds the reports from the app itself. All data remains secure and inaccessible, even from Anaxi itself.

Anaxi will soon add report capabilities and integrate with other tools, such as Atlassian’s Jira, in addition to building apps for other platforms such as Android and web.

For more information go to www.anaxi.com/features.

    About Anaxi

Co-founded by Marc Verstaen (previously executive vice president of product development at Docker) and John Lafleur (previously CEO at CodinGame) in December 2017, Anaxi is the system of record for engineering organizations that need to facilitate decision processes. Anaxi will open a new data-driven era to engineering organizations, empowering them to better allocate their development time and resources.

  • Chef Automate Incident Creation Receives Application Certification from ServiceNow®

New integration gives customers streamlined access to handle incident management to greatly reduce resolution time and offer greater end-user visibility and productivity

SEATTLE – September 11, 2018 – Chef, the leader in Continuous Automation, today announced it has received certification of its Chef Automate Incident Creation application with ServiceNow,  available now in the ServiceNow Store. Certification by ServiceNow is only granted to apps available in the Store and signifies that the Chef Automate Incident Creation app has successfully completed a set of defined tests focused on Now Platform™ security, compatibility, performance and integration interoperability.  The certification also ensures that best practices are utilized in the design and implementation of the Chef Automate app with ServiceNow.

The Chef Automate Incident Creation application allows users to easily generate incidents in their ServiceNow Incident Management environment whenever they have failures in their Chef-managed platform due to either infrastructure automation updates failing or automated compliance check failures. This integration with ServiceNow gives Chef customers the ability to capture all failures across their estate for resolution and tracking purposes as a way to ensure any infrastructure automation problems are resolved rapidly and compliance failures are tracked and corrected based on internal best practices.

Key components of this integration include:

    • Incident management for infrastructure and compliance automation – This capability gives users the ability to create ServiceNow incident tickets, alert/page operations or information security (for Chef failures or InSpec failures, respectively), so that automation and compliance failures are actioned as quickly as possible and in concordance with customer- or regulatory-mandated SLAs or OLAs.
    • Intelligent data management and event de-duplication — The integration intelligently uses Chef Automate as a central data aggregator and de-duplicates events, so that repeated failures do not open repeated incident tickets. Instead, they update relevant fields in ServiceNow, such as the time of last failure. This helps reduce overall alert noise, in contrast to non-Chef Automate approaches that send data directly from managed nodes to ServiceNow.
    • Compliance-related integration opportunities with other capabilities on the ServiceNow platform — The data stream of compliance events generated by this integration can now be leveraged by other applications on the ServiceNow platform. For example, governance and risk compliance (GRC) or security/incident management (SIEM) systems that have integrations with ServiceNow can now have access to this data. For those companies who have standardized on such systems, the data stream from InSpec through Chef Automate allows users to enhance their overall risk dashboard with real time, continuous compliance events that are already properly prioritized, rather than inundating these systems with meaningless, context-free data as was previously the case.

“This integration has been one of the most desired features, with many of our customers requesting this integration with ServiceNow’s premier IT service management solution,” said James Casey, VP of Partner Integration at Chef.  “We look forward to working with ServiceNow to give our customers a single place to track all issues seen across their automated infrastructure that will improve the overall expediency of both ServiceNow and Chef Automate within the enterprise and help reduce the overall repercussions of any failure scenarios.”

Focus on vendors that offer more than one type of DM technology and support consistent policies across your DM scenarios, applications and platforms.” Redgate is listed as a data masking technology Representative Vendor.

Published on 20 July 2018, the Market Guide predicts global enterprise use of data masking or similar de-identification techniques will increase from 15% in 2017 to 40% by 2021.

Redgate feels that, driven by increasing privacy regulations, the growth in data, and the expanding use of analytics to extract more value from data, data masking is becoming a key way for companies to meet compliance requirements, and address insider and outsider threats.

Data masking is needed because many companies use copies of their production databases in their development, testing and business analytics environments. Sensitive data in those databases, however, has to be protected by replacing it with fictitious data. That data in turn has to be realistic and truly representative of the original data in order to retain its referential integrity and distribution characteristics.

Using random data will not work, which is where third party tools like Redgate Data Masker come in. They provide multiple methods to sanitize data in SQL Server and Oracle databases, use templates to remain consistent with existing data formats, and include replacement data sets such as names, zip codes and email addresses.

Steve Jones, Microsoft Data Platform MVP, is not surprised. “Big enterprises, particularly in the financial sector, have been using bespoke data masking solutions for a long time, but the cost was a barrier for smaller players. We’re now seeing products like Redgate Data Masker give small to medium sized businesses the same advantages out of the box. They can continue to make the most of the data they have while remaining compliant with regulations like SOX, HIPAA and the GDPR.”

Gartner’s Market Guide also recommends data masking solutions should provide tools to manage the full life cycle of masking data: deploying masking rules, scheduling or triggering a masking job, and monitoring the performance of static and dynamic data masking operations. It recommends that security and risk management leaders responsible for data security and compliance should “take advantage of innovative data-masking products at the data virtualization or application tier.”

In February 2018, combined Data Masker with its SQL Clone tool, which uses the standard disk virtualization technologies built into the Windows operating system to create copies of databases in seconds. The copies, which are only around 40MB in size for a 1TB database, work just like normal databases and can be connected to and edited using any program.

The SQL Provision solution that was created provides a single central management system for provisioning masked database copies with a process that is simple, repeatable, transparent, and auditable.

“This is the way many companies will go,” concludes Steve Jones. “They need to provision masked copies of production databases for development, and by making it fast and secure, they can comply with privacy regulations, yet still get lots of value from their data.”
