  • Colonial Life Achieves Full-Stack DevOps with Datical

Market Leader in Voluntary Insurance Benefits Brings DevOps Automation to the Database; Delivers Innovation to Customers Faster

AUSTIN, Texas – Sept. 20, 2018 – Datical, the leading provider of database release automation solutions, today announced that Colonial Life, a market leader in financial protection benefits for the workplace, has selected Datical as its partner to automate the deployment of database changes and accelerate DevOps.

For nearly 80 years, Colonial Life (a subsidiary of Unum Group) has been an industry-leading voluntary benefits provider in the U.S. Colonial Life serves more than 4 million people at more than 90,000 companies and organizations with a comprehensive package of voluntary benefits including disability, life, accident, dental, critical illness, cancer and hospitalization insurance.

In today’s increasingly competitive insurance market, providers must remain innovative with fast, frequent benefits updates and new application releases to deliver better customer experiences. To achieve this, organizations such as Colonial Life have turned to Agile and DevOps practices to deliver software innovation to market quickly and with high quality. However, despite investments in new technologies to automate the build, test and deployment of application code, organizations can struggle with incorporating the necessary speed and quality of database code changes into their software delivery process. This is because Agile and DevOps improvements have not been applied to the entire software development stack.

“Our applications are very data driven, so it’s extremely important that our database code changes consistently move along the software delivery path with our application code changes,” said Colette Casey, technical architect at Colonial Life. “Prior to Datical, we had a very cumbersome process for reviewing, validating and deploying database changes. Unlike the automated process for deploying application code, this process was manual, and it was not uncommon that steps were missed or left incomplete. The database and application deployment processes were completely disconnected.”

Colonial Life transformed its software delivery process and chose Datical to bring DevOps to the entire software stack, expanding beyond application code to include the critical role that data and the database play in modern software delivery. Colonial Life moved from a manual waterfall software delivery model to a modern, automated, faster continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) pipeline.

Datical is changing the way businesses build software to deliver better customer experiences faster. Datical’s solution is designed to break the application release logjam created by today’s manual database deployment processes. Datical improves productivity and performance, allowing development, test and database administrator (DBA) staff to focus on more important projects and initiatives – overcoming the large hurdle of bringing data into the continuous delivery process.

“Datical provides the ability, flexibility, speed and ease to make sure that our database code moves with application our code. If you want to deliver software innovation to market faster and more often, I can’t stress enough how important it is to include the database when automating the software delivery process,” Casey said. “The first release we took to production with Datical had about 600 database change scripts. In the past, this would have taken the better part of a day to deploy. With Datical, it was done in about one hour.”

  • Eggplant Launches Intelligent Robotic Process Automation Solution

Eggplant RPA can automate anything a person can do, across any App, Website, System or Process

London, UK and Boulder, Colorado 20, September 2018 Eggplant, the provider of user-centric, intelligent testing and performance solutions, has released Eggplant RPA: an intelligent Robotic Process Automation (RPA) solution, harnessing Eggplant’s unique and patented Digital Automation Intelligence (DAI) capabilities.

DAI was designed initially for test automation—using artificial intelligence to intelligently drive exploration of relevant user journeys in any application, website or process. Now the same core DAI technology—which can automate anything a person can do, including intelligently understanding and acting on screen images and text and driving any application through keyboard and mouse inputs, or through APIs—has been packaged in an offering specifically for RPA.

Eggplant’s unique automation technology is already widely used for RPA use cases across a variety of industry sectors. These use cases range from database migration and audit trails for federal organizations, to security patches for hospital servers, to marketing automation.

Eggplant has also used RPA to convert and migrate over 500,000 files for a document management platform, speeding up processes and reducing mundane, repetitive tasks for employees without the risk of human error during manual entry.

For one Financial Services customer, Eggplant has deployed RPA to provide database migration after the acquisition of a bank. Eggplant was chosen for this project after a Financial Services technology provider was unable to migrate the data in a reasonable timeframe. In the healthcare industry, Eggplant has worked with a variety of institutions to provide RPA for onboarding and offboarding new employees, testing credentials of ex-employee logins, migrating and moving data between systems, and preparing test environments. The increased demand for Eggplant automation is the motivation behind the company creating a package specifically to support RPA use cases.

Eggplant RPA offers a modeling interface to lay out an automation model in a code-free way. This enables business users, not technical experts, to drive the RPA solution. Eggplant RPA provides both attended and unattended RPA (with and without human intervention) and automation for multiple systems and processes. Eggplant RPA’s unique fusion automation engine can automate processes across multiple platforms, including mobile devices, desktop devices, mainframes, robots, speech driven interfaces and anything else with a screen and input devices and/or an API.

Eggplant RPA can work with Eggplant Real Customer Experience Insights (CXI) to record and analyze the usage patterns of real users in production and feed this into the Eggplant Modeler as a robotic process. In addition, Eggplant RPA can be used to provide an API for a legacy application that has no native API. To achieve this, a REST API can be customized that then triggers Eggplant automation actions through an application’s user interface.

Eggplant has been used to automate processes in the Orion spacecraft, Coca-Cola vending machines, MRI scanners, Temenos banking systems, Oracle Forms, and prototype mobile devices. This unique capability means Eggplant RPA can automate apps and processes that are considered by many to be un-automatable, ‘too dynamic’ or ‘too legacy’ to automate.

  • MariaDB Acquires Clustrix Adding Distributed Database Technology

Clustrix technology will allow MariaDB to scale beyond traditional distributed solutions such as Oracle RAC to levels only achieved with NoSQL, without compromising core enterprise features

MENLO PARK, Calif. and HELSINKI, Sept. 20, 2018 /PRNewswire/ — MariaDB® Corporation today announced it has acquired Clustrix, the pioneer in distributed database technology, for an undisclosed amount. With the acquisition, MariaDB adds scale-out capability that runs on premises with commodity hardware or in any cloud environment, with greater scalability and higher availability than other traditional distributed options such as Oracle RAC. The acquisition, which follows news of an additional investment in MariaDB to further database innovation, helps advance the MariaDB Labs mission to tackle the most extreme challenges in the database field, specifically around distributed computing, machine learning, and next-generation chips, memory and storage environments.

“Today, the choices for a scale-out database option are limited – go with a traditional solution like Oracle with high cost and bloat or choose a NoSQL solution that has limited capabilities for data integrity,” said Michael Howard, CEO, MariaDB Corporation. “With Clustrix, MariaDB can provide a better solution for our customers that have challenging scale-out enterprise environments. Our distributed solution will satisfy the most extreme requirements of our largest customers and gives them the freedom to break from Oracle’s lock-in.”

Clustrix distributed technology delivers more than 25 trillion transactions per month through its customers, which translates to datasets in the billions of rows. Compared to legacy systems like Oracle RAC, Clustrix scales with ease no matter the deployment size across commodity hardware.

“At Nielsen Marketing Cloud, we needed a high performance solution to process over 100,000 transactions per second,” said Brent Keator, VP of Infrastructure for Nielsen Marketing Cloud (formally eXelate). “Distributed technology from Clustrix combined with their world-class support team gave us the scale, performance and reliability that we could trust. With Clustrix becoming part of MariaDB, we’re excited to continue to use the technology that handles our high transaction workloads with ease while using the popular, modern MariaDB platform with its proven enterprise functionality.”

MariaDB is adaptable regardless of workload requirements thanks to an architecture that supports pluggable, purpose-built storage engines. This unique approach eliminates the need for a variety of specialized databases, enabling organizations to use a single complete database regardless of the workload and without compromising core enterprise features like standard SQL and ACID compliance.

This is MariaDB’s second acquisition this year. In March, the company announced it bought MammothDB in a move that immediately strengthened its modern analytics solution, MariaDB AX, and advanced its larger Database-as-a-service (DBaaS) strategy.

  • GitLab Raises $100M to Ensure its Single Application Beats 9 Best-in-Class Products

With Series D Led by ICONiQ Capital, GitLab Surpasses a Valuation of $1 Billion

SAN FRANCISCO – September 20, 2018 – GitLab, the only single application for the entire DevOps lifecycle, announced it has completed a $100 million Series D round of funding valuing GitLab at $1.1 billion. GitLab plans to use the funding to become best-in-class in every DevOps software category from planning to monitoring. More than 100,000 organizations use GitLab to deploy to multiple clouds, implement cloud native architectures, and practice Concurrent DevOps. This results in a 200 percent faster DevOps lifecycle with unmatched visibility, higher levels of efficiency, and comprehensive governance.

Enterprises are facing a tool chain crisis, investing time and resources into piecing together disparate tools from different stages of the software development and operations lifecycle. A typical enterprise needs to integrate tools like VersionOne, Jira, GitHub, Jenkins, Artifactory, Electric Cloud, Puppet, New Relic, and BlackDuck. This causes poor visibility because data lives in so many different tools, slow cycle time because teams need to wait on each other, and bolted on security as an afterthought.

GitLab, an open core software project with more than 2,000 contributors, is breaking down this barrier by building features for each stage of the DevOps lifecycle into a single application. This enables Concurrent DevOps, the ability for teams to manage, plan, create, verify, package, release, configure, monitor, and secure software together so they can have visibility into what matters, start without waiting, and ship with confidence.

GitLab started as source code management based on Git. But when announcing their series C last year, GitLab voiced the ambition to grow beyond that to cover every product category of the DevOps lifecycle. Some GitLab features have already become best in class, like the continuous integration system that scored highest in the current offering category in The Forrester Wave™: Continuous Integration Tools, Q3 2017 report, and was recognized as a “Strong Performer” in The Forrester New Wave™ for Value Stream Management Tools, Q3 2018. With this latest funding round and the growing number of people contributing code to GitLab, GitLab is well positioned for all of its features to become best-in-class.

“Two of the defining characteristics of modern application development are an open, collaborative process and toolchains that transcend individual product categories from planning out to operations,” said Stephen O’Grady, Principal Analyst with RedMonk. “By marrying an open source development process to a comprehensive set of functional capabilities, GitLab aims to leverage those precise qualities in a single applications that meets enterprises’ DevOps needs.”

The latest round brings GitLab’s valuation to over $1 billion and validates its position as the world’s first single application for the entire DevOps lifecycle. As other DevOps tools become locked in to a single cloud, GitLabs customers are embracing a multi-cloud future, so their tooling must be independent of any single cloud provider and work across on-premises, private cloud, and public cloud. Customers want their tooling to be consistent, whether they deploy it themselves or use it as a service.

“GitLab is emerging as a leader across the entire software development ecosystem by releasing software at an exceptional velocity,” said Matthew Jacobson, General Partner at ICONIQ Capital. “They’re taking the broad software development market head-on by developing an application that allows organizations to ship software at an accelerated rate with major increases in efficiency. ”

“Since raising a Series C round last year, we’ve delivered on our commitment to bring a single application for the entire DevOps lifecycle to market, and as a result have been able to reach over $1 billion in valuation,” said Sid Sijbrandij, CEO of GitLab. “With this latest funding round, we will continue to build out our management, planning, packaging, deployment, configuration, monitoring and security features for a more robust DevOps application.”

“With GitLab we are able to continuously improve our entire product development pipeline, which increases productivity and synergy among our team,” said Marcelo Lebre, VP of engineering at Unbabel. “Using GitLab has been a game changer and has fostered an entirely new way of working that allows our team to be more focused on the end result.”

GitLab is purpose built for organizations undergoing a digital transformation, aiming for faster DevOps lifecycles, cloud native architectures, and multi-cloud deployments. Recent product milestones include the release of Auto DevOps, a Kubernetes integration so clusters can be spun up from within GitLab, Web IDE to let everyone contribute without needing to setup a development environment, and a series of built-in security capabilities bolstered by the acquisition of Gemnasium by GitLab.

GitLab was recognized by Inc. Magazine as a top four software company in its list of 5,000 fastest-growing private companies in the United States. GitLab has achieved a three year growth rate of 6,213 percent. GitLab has grown from fewer than 10 people in 2015 to more than 350 team members in over 40 countries across the globe. There are currently 77 open job opportunities to continue this worldwide growth.

“Deployments are no longer limited to a traditional software release cycle,” said Chris Hill, head of systems engineering, next generation infotainment at Jaguar Land Rover. “Using GitLab-CI for our Continuous Deployments over-the-air, we have empowered the customer to be their own technician while increasing the rate at which software can be delivered.”

    About GitLab

GitLab is a single application built from the ground up for the entire DevOps lifecycle for Product, Development, QA, Security, and Operations teams to work concurrently on the same project. GitLab provides teams a single data store, one user interface, and one permission model across the DevOps lifecycle, allowing teams to collaborate and work on a project from a single conversation, significantly reducing cycle time, and focus exclusively on building great software quickly. Built on Open Source, GitLab leverages the community contributions of thousands of developers and millions of users to continuously deliver new DevOps innovations. More than 100,000 organizations from startups to global enterprise organizations, including Ticketmaster, ING, NASDAQ, Alibaba, Sony, and Intel trust GitLab to deliver great software at new speeds.

  • Gene Kim hosts DevOps webinar for Redgate database developer audience

Cambridge UK, Tuesday 18 September 2018 – The acclaimed DevOps author and researcher Gene Kim is to host a webinar for users of Redgate’s database development tools on 25 September. The webinar will talk about the key findings in the 2018 Accelerate State of DevOps Report from DORA which, for the first time, called out database development as a key technical practice which can drive high performance in DevOps.

Gene Kim will be joined by Steve Jones, editor of SQLServerCentral.com, the community of 1.9 million DBAs, developers and SQL Server users. Together, they’ll look at the key findings in the DORA Report and investigate the growing importance of the database in successful DevOps.

The result of over five years of research, with over 30,000 data points, the Report seeks to understand high performance in the context of software development and identify the factors that can predict it.

The inclusion of the database this year was because changes to databases are often a major source of risk and delay when performing deployments. The authors of the report, which included Jez Humble and Nicole Forsgren as well as Gene Kim, wanted to investigate which database-related practices help when implementing continuous delivery to improve both software delivery performance and availability.

Their conclusion, that integrating database work into the software development process positively contributes to continuous delivery, strikes a chord with some earlier research from Redgate. The 2018 Database DevOps Survey showed that 76% of application developers are now also responsible for developing databases, and 75% of them build database deployment scripts.

This change has been prompted by the faster speed at which features can be released using DevOps. Those front-end features often need an update to the database at the back end as well, so it makes sense for the two activities to be aligned as part of the same process.

  • Electric Cloud Launches Extended DevOps Training and Certification Program In Partnership with DevOps Institute

Electric Cloud University offers online and private onsite training, along with public Continuous Education™ Workshops, to accelerate DevOps skills adoption

SAN JOSE, CA, September 18, 2018 — Electric Cloud (http://electric-cloud.com/), the leader in Adaptive Release Orchestration and Continuous Delivery, announced a new training and certification program called Electric Cloud University (ECU). Created in partnership with the DevOps Institute (https://devopsinstitute.com/), the program allows Electric Cloud users to access on-demand training at their convenience and desired pace. ECU allows organizations to realize the benefits of DevOps and Application Release Orchestration (ARO) by providing a path for IT professionals looking to acquire new skills via training offered online, onsite, and through regional Continuous Education Workshops.

Learn more about the inaugural ECU Continuous Education Workshops featuring industry leaders John Willis and Gary Gruver: https://electric-cloud.com/blog/2018/09/electric-cloud-university.

Electric Cloud created ECU to augment traditional classroom training and to provide users with the flexibility to take the training when they need it. While organizations can still choose to have in-person training, ECU courses are also available in an online, self-paced learning management system (LMS). The ECU curriculum covers topics like DevOps Foundations, as well as pipeline and environment management, release orchestration, deployment automation, and build and test cycle acceleration. The ECU LMS has multiple levels of certification, with courseware that is kept up-to-date with the latest product and updated at the same cadence as Electric Cloud product releases, so information is always current and students don’t have to wait to be trained on the latest features.

“Ultimately, the power of a Learning Management System (LMS) like ECU will help not only our current base of customers, but will support the continued learning and growth of the software delivery community as a whole,” said Sunil Mavadia, Global Head of Customer Journey at Electric Cloud. “As the leader in ARO, Electric Cloud is committed to advancing the industry by providing knowledge and best practices for ARO through the numerous learning paths and certifications available in ECU.”

    ElectricFlow certifications include:

    • Release Orchestration
    • Release Orchestration Master
    • Deployment Automation Engineer
    • Deployment Automation Engineer Master
    • Administrator

ElectricAccelerator courses cover build and resource optimization, on-prem and cloud resource management, and test cycle acceleration.  ElectricAccelerator certifications include:

    • Build Accelerator
    • Test Accelerator
    • Administrator
    • Agile Master
