  • Jira Ops + OpsGenie: Powerful Incident Management

Software has become part of our daily lives – from sending money using your phone to signing contracts with a click. But all this progress comes with a downside – specifically, downtime. When a popular online service goes down, it disrupts millions of people and costs businesses $700 million per year in North America alone. Responding to service disruptions has become one of the biggest challenges facing IT organizations today.

That’s why I am excited to share two significant announcements to help IT operations teams resolve outages faster and incur fewer incidents over time.

First, we’ve entered into an agreement to acquire OpsGenie, a leader in incident alerting. Over 3,000 customers, including Air Canada, The Washington Post, and Overstock, trust OpsGenie to manage their on-call schedule and notify the right people as soon as an incident occurs. Second, we’re launching a new product – called Jira Ops – to serve as an incident command center, giving your response teams a central place to coordinate their work during a major incident.

OpsGenie: alerting and escalation during a crisis

Prompt and reliable alerting is the critical first step in incident response. And because today’s applications are more complex than ever, incidents often require complex coordination between operations and software development teams.

OpsGenie helps notify all the right people through a sophisticated combination of scheduling, escalation paths, and notifications that takes things like time zones and holidays into account. And OpsGenie does all this with rock-solid reliability.

Jira Ops: one place to coordinate your response

Even after the response team acknowledges the alert and springs into action, they often have to rely on a patchwork of point solutions to get their jobs done, including:

    • Alerting and escalation tools such as OpsGenie for notifying additional responders
    • Real-time chat in Slack for diagnosing the issue and discussing a fix
    • Incident communication via Atlassian Statuspage for keeping customers informed
    • Customer service in Jira Service Desk for responding to the flood of emails and calls that come in
    • Confluence and Jira Software for writing up a postmortem and tracking post-incident tasks

Each of these tools serves a valuable purpose. But when activity is scattered across many different tools, it hard for teams to stay coordinated. That’s why we built Jira Ops – a unified incident command center to give your team a single place for response coordination. Powered by Jira’s workflow engine, Jira Ops guides your team through the response workflow and automates common steps like creating a new Slack room for each incident.

And because great tools are even better when paired with the right practices, we’re including our own internal incident response handbook so customers can learn from the incident response techniques we’ve built up over the last ten years as a provider of cloud-based services.

A powerful incident management platform for today’s IT teams

Jira Ops and OpsGenie bring reliability and consistency to incident management and give your team a reusable framework that helps them resolve outages faster. But it doesn’t end there. Atlassian Statuspage, the market leader in incident communications, now offers deep integrations with Jira Ops.

Together, they form a powerful platform to help you respond to and resolve incidents faster. With Atlassian, your teams can be more effective across the entire incident lifecycle – from first response to communicating with customers to learning from root cause analysis – so you can deliver the best possible service to your customers.

We’re excited to serve OpsGenie’s customers and work with the entire OpsGenie team to offer the best incident response solution on the market.

  • Moogsoft® Announces Observe™ Expanding Its AIOps Platform with Real-Time Analysis and IT Problem Detection at the Source

Groundbreaking new technology gives IT teams total observability into customer-impacting problems wherever they occur, across on-premises and cloud environments

SAN FRANCISCO — August 30, 2018 — Moogsoft, a pioneer and leading provider of artificial intelligence for IT operations (AIOps), today announced the launch of Moogsoft® Observe™. This groundbreaking technology extends Moogsoft’s core AIOps platform capabilities from centralized analytics outwards to the data source, providing IT teams with absolute visibility and total observability of customer-impacting problems wherever they occur.

Moogsoft Observe is the only technology in the world that ingests time-series and metrics data in real-time and applies AI to detect incidents at the source of the problem. Observe stores only anomalous and contextual data, giving IT teams highly-advanced, specific knowledge to improve their online services and applications while dramatically lowering data transport, ingestion, and storage costs. Without requiring data lakes or data scientists to operate, Observe can be easily used by IT generalists including site reliability engineers and DevOps.

“With Observe, we’re advancing the capabilities of AIOps to help IT teams better manage their services and applications in the face of a massive proliferation and decentralization of data,” said Phil Tee, CEO of Moogsoft. “Unlike other tools, Observe enables IT and DevOps teams to detect problems wherever their customers are, and allows them to identify the root cause for service disruptions sooner without the cost, complexity, and delays of collecting and analyzing all the data in a centralized location.”

Moogsoft Observe is powered by a new suite of patent-pending algorithms developed for the most complex IT use cases in the world’s largest enterprise environments. By ingesting and analyzing data at the source and storing only anomalous and contextual data centrally, Observe enables trend and historical analysis of relevant, meaningful data but at a lower cost and with significantly reduced latency — reducing the time to detect a problem by up to 60% and cutting nearly 90% of the storage and communication costs per bit of information.

“In our pure cloud and agile environments, we need a solution that could perform anomaly detection and proactively notify us that something’s wrong — putting people in front of dashboards isn’t an option anymore,” said Eli Chen, CTO of UJET, which beta-tested Observe. “Moogsoft’s AI-centric approach to the problem and extending it to time-series data analysis with its Observe offering is exactly the right approach to that problem.”

Built for the enterprise, Observe is a single-agent technology that can operate across all environments, including cloud instances, workloads, and containers, as well as on-premises systems and applications.

Observe is an extension of the Moogsoft AIOps platform but can be deployed independently. An early access beta program will be available this November. For more information about Observe and to register for the beta, click here.

Additionally, Moogsoft announced today that version 7.0 of the Moogsoft AIOps platform will be available this October. This release introduces Vertex Entropy and Situation Topology Visualization — two innovative AI-based technologies that help IT teams understand the root cause of any customer-impacting problem through a visually rich system topology map. Together, Vertex Entropy and Situation Topology Visualization provide unparalleled insights into the root cause of any problem and full visibility into the complex relationships across IT processes, applications, and devices.

  • Datree launches with $3 Million in Funding to Fix DevOps

Datree, the first Git-Centric Operations Management Platform, launched today and announced $3 million in funding from venture capital firm TLV Partners.

Datree, founded by Israeli developers Arthur Schmunk, Eyar Zilberman and Shimon Tolts, addresses the challenges of modern software development by cataloging an organization’s whole development stack, automating Git tasks and blocking dangerous changes to applications and infrastructure. Datree has secured design partners such as HoneyBook, SimilarWeb and PlayBuzz.

Agile and DevOps deconstructed software companies into small autonomous teams using different programming languages, multiple repositories and microservices. But this autonomy comes at a cost. Software teams sometimes have no idea what code components other teams are using or who’s working on what; company standards become optional, because there’s no way to enforce them without excessive control; and CIOs, Software Architects and DevOps Managers have lost visibility into the company’s stack because it’s so distributed.

Companies can have hundreds or even thousands of Git repositories, linked by a complicated network of dependencies, with automated processes building and deploying them into applications in ways that nobody fully understands.

Datree solves this problem. First, it scans all of a company’s public and private repositories to build a catalog of the entire company’s ecosystem: all the code components (packages, infrastructure as code, cloud services and more), as well as people and repositories.

Then, datree’s smart policy engine helps developers work within an organization’s best-practice guidelines. Developers get real-time information and insights pushed to their existing work environment via the command line, Slack and GitHub dialogs, to help them make informed decisions. Datree checks every pull request against user-defined policies, and blocks risky code components, unstable versions, and and unauthorized changes to ‘infrastructure as code’ and Git configurations.

  • Compliancepoint Announces New White Paper On Data Breach Security Measures: 61% Of Data Breach Victims Are Businesses With 1,000 Employees

White Paper Shows How System Patching & Vulnerability/Penetration Testing Can Help With Prevention

ATLANTA, GA (August 28, 2018) – CompliancePoint, a leading provider of information security and risk management services focused on privacy, data security, compliance and vendor risk management, announced today a new white paper focused on methods such as system patching and penetration testing used as best practices to prevent a data breach. Nearly a quarter of businesses say it would take them 60 days to detect a breach1; a recent analysis of breaches shows that smaller companies are just as vulnerable as larger ones.   Click here to download the white paper.

    Businesses and Data Management

The frequency of data breaches, like theft, loss or accidental release of private information, is on the rise and this is not just a problem centered around today’s largest companies. Small and mid-sized businesses with fewer data security resources are particularly vulnerable. According to the 2017 Verizon Data Breach Investigations Report, 61% of the data breach victims were businesses with under 1,000 employees. Attacks on smaller businesses can wreak as much damage as the ones making headlines on today’s largest companies.

System patching and vulnerability testing are two proven methods of preventative strategies organizations of every size can utilize in the protection of sensitive data.  With a number of businesses unaware or unable to implement these strategies, CompliancePoint offers tangible implementation techniques for any organization as outlined in the paper.

    Vulnerability, Penetration Testing & Implementation

The only way to make sure something is as secure as possible, is to test it regularly. It is wise for any organization storing, processing and/or sharing data to hire an experienced, respectable Vul/Pen expert to test their security structure. Vulnerability scanning and evaluations are equally important inside and outside a security system.

How regular penetration testing helps strengthen security and expose vulnerabilities:

    •            Exposes real-world risks and vulnerabilities

    •            Encourages trust between stakeholders and protects the organizations bottom line

    •            Ensures business continuity by eliminating disruptions

    •            Follows regulations and certifications to maintain compliance

“Data security and privacy vulnerabilities can expose any organization to a tremendous amount of risk,” said Greg Sparrow, Vice President and General Manager at CompliancePoint. It’s important to understand the importance of a solid data security plan utilizing these proven methods of prevention apply to businesses of all sizes.  This isn’t just a problem for big corporations.”

  • New Accelerate State of DevOps Report Reveals the Database is Now Key to DevOps

Cambridge UK, Wednesday 29 August 2018 – The 2018 Accelerate State of DevOps Report, published today, includes database development as a key technical practice which can drive high performance in DevOps. This matches similar findings in research from Redgate Software, which sponsored the report and provided input.

The longest-running research of its kind, the Accelerate report from DevOps Research and Assessment (DORA) has consistently shown that higher software delivery performance delivers powerful business outcomes.

Interestingly, a new theme in this year’s report was to identify the technical practices that drive higher performance and unlock competitive advantage. They include monitoring and observability, continuous testing, ‘shifting left’ on security and, importantly, database change management.

In terms of DevOps itself, the report shows that the highest performing organizations which adopt DevOps release changes 46 times more frequently, have a change failure rate that is 7 times lower, and are able to recover from breaking changes 2,604 times faster.

Crucially, the lead time from committing changes to being able to deploy them is less than one hour in the highest performing organizations – and between one and six months in low performers. Between 46% and 60% of changes deployed by low performers also require some form of hotfix, rollback, or patch.

Database development has entered the picture because deploying changes to the database is often the bottleneck in software development and slows down releases. To address this, the report investigated which database-related practices help when implementing continuous delivery to improve software delivery performance and availability.

The results revealed that teams which do continuous delivery well use version control for database changes and manage them in the same way as changes to the application. It also showed that integrating database development into software delivery positively contributes to performance, with changes to the database no longer slowing processes down or causing problems during deployments.

The starting block is communication, cross-team collaboration and visibility, which echoes Redgate’s own 2018 State of Database DevOps Survey earlier in the year. This showed that 76% of developers are now responsible for both application and database development, and 58% reported their development teams and DBAs work on projects together.

As Stephanie Herr, Database DevOps Product Manager at Redgate, comments, “DevOps has become widely accepted in application development and it’s increasingly being recognized that database development can’t be left behind. Tools are now available that integrate with and plug into the same version control, continuous integration and release management tools used for applications. More importantly, the business case for adopting DevOps for the database has now also been demonstrated.”

  • SentinelOne Unveils H1 2018 Enterprise Risk Index Report

Report Highlights Prevalence of Ransomware and Rise of Fileless and PowerShell Attacks; Need for Next-Gen Endpoint Protection

Mountain View, Calif. – August 28, 2018 – SentinelOne, the autonomous endpoint protection company, today announced the findings of its H1 2018 Enterprise Risk Index Report. According to the report, fileless based attacks rose by 94 percent in the first half of 2018, evidence of the trend’s growing popularity. In addition, as of June 2018, PowerShell attacks jumped to a record of 5.2 attacks per 1000 endpoints, compared to 2.5 attacks in May.

The report also examines the classification of detected documents and executables by the verdict provided by reputation services, unveiling that more than 70 percent of total detections were unknown to these services. The findings demonstrate the need for next-gen endpoint protection to effectively stay ahead of today’s rapidly changing threat landscape, as reputation-based detection is no longer a match for today’s cyber-criminals.

“As we enter the second half of 2018, there are a number of trends and prevailing threats businesses and individuals should be watching for,” said Aviram Shmueli, Director of Product Management, SentinelOne. “Our Enterprise Risk Index Report found that ongoing advancements in fileless malware, PowerShell attacks and ransomware continue to be a pain point as attackers refine methods to bypass legacy AV. Reputation feeds are not sufficient to combat today’s threats; highly sophisticated, proprietary engines are needed to provide real comprehensive protection.”

Other key findings of the report, which leverages anonymized data collected from SentinelOne global deployment of agents gathered from January 1, 2018 to June 30, 2018, include:

    • Ransomware attacks remain popular, ranging from 5.6 to 14.4 attacks per 1000 endpoints.
    • More than 70 percent of detected executables were unknown to reputation services
    • More than 90 percent of detected documents were unknown to reputation services

  • Platform9’s Managed Kubernetes Solution Adds ‘Arbitrage’ Capabilities to Dynamically Run Nodes in a Cluster on Amazon EC2 Spot Instances

Solution automatically optimizes cost and infrastructure utilization by continuously evaluating cloud costs and dynamically allocating capacity at the lowest price available, while ensuring availability and performance SLAs are met

Sunnyvale, CA – August 28, 2018 – Platform9 (https://platform9.com/), the leader in SaaS-managed hybrid cloud, today announced Arbitrage – a new capability for Platform9 Managed Kubernetes. The solution allows companies to define what percentage of their total number of nodes in a Kubernetes cluster to deploy as Spot instances on Amazon EC2 at adjustable Spot bid prices, and what level of fault tolerance and performance to maintain. It also provides improved cloud cost control for organizations by continuously evaluating the pricing of cloud resources against target SLAs to automatically decide whether Spot instances or standard EC2 instances are deployed. The advantages of Arbitrage are further realized when combined with Fission, the open source Serverless framework (https://fission.io/), for the execution of Functions for Kubernetes using cheaper cloud resources than the more expensive EC2 instances or the dedicated Kubernetes services offered by public clouds.

Learn more about Arbitrage and other Platform9 Managed Kubernetes capabilities at: (https://platform9.com/managed-kubernetes/).

“With Arbitrage, organizations can significantly lower their Amazon EC2 costs without sacrificing fault tolerance for mission-critical Kubernetes-based applications,” said Sirish Raghuram, Co-Founder and CEO of Platform9. “Arbitrage is another example of the automated management capabilities we offer our customers to enable them to take advantage of new technologies, such as Kubernetes, while reducing infrastructure costs and management overhead.”

Platform9 Managed Kubernetes is the industry’s only enterprise-grade, SaaS-managed solution that is infrastructure agnostic, working across any public cloud or on-premises infrastructure. This remotely-managed service eliminates the operational complexity around using Kubernetes for enterprise workloads by delivering it as a Service — with  deployments, monitoring, upgrades, fault tolerance and troubleshooting — all handled automatically. Platform9 Managed Kubernetes allows enterprises to benefit from a robust production-grade Kubernetes solution within an hour, on any infrastructure environment, with all the enterprise features built in — such as SSO, backups, failover and HA clusters, auto healing, and more — all of which are backed by the company’s 247x7x365 SLA.

To allow users to accelerate their time-to-value with Kubernetes even further, Platform9 created Fission, the industry leading open source Serverless framework that is Kubernetes-native, and is free to use under the Apache license. With Fission, developers can easily code, deploy and operate Serverless applications that are production-ready from the get-go without having to learn anything about Kubernetes. It allows Operations to enable a Lambda-like experience (the Serverless service from AWS) in their own backyard, on any infrastructure, without risking lock-in or incurring additional cloud costs.

Furthermore, Platform9’s hybrid cloud solution provides a single pane of glass with a unified experience across VMs, Kubernetes, and Serverless functions. This ensures enterprises have consistent management and visibility across all their technology stacks and environments – on prem and in the cloud.

    About Platform9

Platform9 (platform9.com) delivers a SaaS-managed hybrid cloud solution that turns existing infrastructure into a cloud, instantly.  We help enterprises drive digital transformation by enabling them to manage VMs, Containers and Serverless Functions on ANY infrastructure — on-premises, in public clouds, or at the edge – with a self-service, simple and unified experience.Customers such as Cadence, Autodesk, Splunk, EBSCO, Bitly, LogMeIn and Aruba see upwards of 300 percent improvement in IT efficiency, 33 percent faster time to market, and 50-80 percent improvement in data center utilization and cost reduction. The company is headquartered in Sunnyvale, CA, and is backed by Redpoint Ventures, Menlo Ventures, Canvas Ventures and HPE.
