  • North Carolina May Meeting: DevOps – From the Hype to the Bottom Line

DevOps is generally defined as software development movement that encourages automation, integration and greater collaboration between software developers and operations staff. By bridging the gap between those two sometimes warring factions, DevOps establishes a consistent, repeatable way for IT to manage its production environment, resulting in faster time to market, higher productivity levels and smoother server and application deployment.
What does this definition really mean? Does the DevOps movement really deliver on the bottom line? Are organizations buying in to DevOps at all levels, or is it just the latest in a long line of the latest and greatest software development methodologies? What are the key elements of a successful DevOps initiative? What skillsets should IT professionals grow to be successful in a DevOps environment? Should organizations replace existing successful best practices with DevOps methodologies?
Our panel discussion of IT leaders in May will answer these questions helping sort through misconceptions about DevOps and its impact on the software development and delivery cycle.  Panelists with links to their bios include:·
Frank Isaacs DevOps Engineer at IBM
Salill Soman  Director, Application Development at MetLife
Josh Wyatt    Director, Global DevOps at LogicNow.

The meeting will be on May 12 at The NC State University Club, 4200 Hillsborough Street in Raleigh.  Registration and networking starts at 5:30 p.m., dinner is at 6:30. The feature presentation will be from 7:15 pm to 8:30 p.m.

  • Sqreen raises $ 2.3 million in seed funding to bring app protection to all developers.

PARIS – April 29, 2016 – Paris-based startup Sqreen.io raised a $2.3 million seed round to ship app “protection-as-a-service”. It provides every developer a simple way to get the security their applications deserve.
The company was founded in 2015 by two security experts who spent 10 years hacking and assessing product security at Apple.

Security has been kept away from products for decades as an experts reserved arena. Developers have equated it to constraints that limit their freedom to code and to painful processes.

Like New Relic is for app performance monitoring, Sqreen is focused on pleasing developers. It only takes 30 seconds to install. No source code modification or special skills are required. With Sqreen, applications are automatically instrumented in order to diagnose the vulnerabilities when they occur. Applications also benefit from additional protection logic. Issues are spotted directly in the code base. Sqreen is the perfect approach to security in continuous integration.

Sqreen provides real-time defenses that continuously adapt and learn from millions of attacks sourced from the community. Thousands of security threats are supported – including SQL injection, cross site scripting, code/command/file injections, and cryptographic weaknesses.

“Conventional approaches to security haven’t done much to make applications stronger and the complexity intimidates most developers. We have been attacking products for years and have experienced firsthand the disconnect between diagnosis and remediation. Our goal is to put security back into products and let the developers embrace this role again. It is pretty obvious that products should now be embedding their own security logic to protect themselves”, said Pierre Betouin, CEO of Sqreen.

“Security is overlooked by early-stage companies growing fast, but it quickly becomes a high priority once they are more mature. Few developers are enthusiastic about the extra workload and rigour involved in securing applications, so a tool like Sqreen is a real boon for the industry. We are bullish on all solutions saving time for developers and Sqreen is definitely one of them”, said Rodolphe Menegaux from Alven.

Alven Capital is leading the round. Point Nine Capital, Kima Ventures, 50Partners and several well known angels also participated, including Marc Verstaen, EVP Product Development at Docker, Thibaud Elziere, former CEO at Fotolia, Francis Nappez, cofounder of Blablacar, Philippe Plichon, head of southern Europe at Dropbox, and Justin Ziegler, cofounder of PriceMinister.

    About Sqreen

Sqreen is a SaaS protection platform for web-based applications that installs in 30 seconds seconds without modifying the source code and provides detection and prevention logic to offer real-time protection and monitoring.

Once deployed, the protection provides real time defenses that continuously adapt to and improve from millions of attacks sourced from the community.

The company’s mission is to embed security logic into every connected application. It was founded in July 2015 by product and security experts and is currently headquartered in Paris, France.

  • Pay Down the Skills Debt Before the Technical Debt

Pay Down the Skills Debt Before the Technical Debt

When we talk about DevOps, we talk about addressing technical debt. We talk about how modern delivery processes and solutions might help you cure that technical debt of monolithic systems that are built on obsolete technologies, using antiquated development methodologies. But that jumps past the first critical step toward transformation, as technical debt is not the biggest inhibitor to DevOps or faster delivery. By far the biggest inhibitor to companies moving forward is what I call the skills debt.

I constantly hear this when talking to executives: “I’d like to move forward with a change, but … my team is …” and that statement always represents a skills debt. The primary limiting factor is not the systems in play, it is that the people aren’t ready or positioned to make the necessary changes. We need to make sure we have a strategy for eliminating the skills debt before addressing technical debt. This is the single-biggest risk to DevOps inside the organization.

Why is the skills debt so endemic? It’s not that people don’t care about their jobs, or that they are not smart or capable enough. It is a self-fulfilling prophecy for most companies because people accrue habits, usually over the course of a decade or more, in the way things are done.

Changing Mindsets to Fill the Skills Gap

Ossified attitudes. Just like we talk about addressing the technical debt of hardwired, inflexibly constructed monolithic apps, organizational structures naturally will harden and develop into ossified attitudes as people favor procedures and skills that are already in place. An organization behaves according to Newtonian physics when it comes to change: An object in motion wants to stay in motion, an object at rest wants to stay at rest.

It’s not as though companies want to have a skills debt, but over time they come to value “the way things are done around here” as part of their identity, and the way corporate structures handle career advancement can even play into this ossification. Think about the technical leadership of the company, the people who rise to the top might have managed successful projects in the past, and while they may not crack open an IDE and code anymore, they will still tend to advise teams to stick to what worked in the past.

New people and ideas can’t stick. Let’s say you have this established skills debt running through your halls, and you bring in a new hotshot to shake things up. Once this person tries to introduce change, they will immediately find themselves lacking traction at every point. The skills debt is like a Teflon coating around the organization’s IT practices, protecting the core of the business from its own ability to change. A new person with new ideas will just skate off the top and bounce right off.

If you work for a cutting-edge startup, or someplace like Google or Apple that naturally has innovative engineers lining up to get in, you probably don’t have a problem with recruiting and allowing new hires to make an impact. But what if you work at a big bank, or a large retailer or a consumer goods manufacturer? Changing attitudes and new skills will largely have to be cultivated from within.

Consulting doesn’t address your skills debt. So if you can’t change fast enough, or hire the right people, how about getting some outside help, some “Pros from Dover” to do that transformation for you?

Consultants will approach an engagement from two angles. Many times, the consultants are very academic. They’ll come in and show you a fancy PowerPoint, maybe teach a class on Agile Methodology and tell you what’s wrong with your processes, without a practical starting point. That solves neither the technical debt, nor the skills debt.

Or in the outsourcing model, the consultant can offer to take all your problems away, and have their own resources do all the work in the project for you, even implement a whole new system. That may solve your short-term technical debt, but it will simply allow the skills debt to continue to accrue. You now have a permanent dependency on this external team, unless you allow the project to end. In any case the people responsible will someday move on to other projects and away from your company.

    Digging Your Own Grave

So, give up and stand pat? Remaining static is a huge mistake in today’s economy. I don’t have to explain that standing still means certain death for your company. On average, a firm in the S&P 500 gets replaced every two weeks. You’ve got to be able to constantly outpace competition—and even your own past results—on a consistent basis.

What you need to do is take the people that are stuck and unstick them. Yes, sometimes specific people will need to be replaced, but by and large the skills debt is something your whole team has to own responsibility for as a first priority before we talk about the technical debt of DevOps. You have to start breaking skills debt down from the inside out, because doing it from the outside in has been proven to fail.

Start changing the DNA. You have to start somewhere. Nobody will be motivated by hearing that the way they are is “no bueno.” If you go and mandate a sweeping cultural transformation across the whole company, everyone’s heads will explode.

The linchpin to making transformation work? A single project. A real piece of work done a different way, by a representative group of the people who need to change. You know how gene therapy is done? One project that allows teams to use the right tools for the job and modern techniques will insert a bit of code into that organization’s DNA. That replicates into beneficial changes elsewhere in the organization as the success and better experience of that team is propagated.

Skills debt is only paid down through direct transference during actual work. This doesn’t happen without effort, but few worthwhile things are achieved without a little struggle. You can’t just tell people about it, or teach them about it—you have to get people involved in projects that resolve the skills debt of DevOps, before you solve the technical debt.

One technology executive at a big media company who made this change said his teams used to ship code to release every seven months, and now they are shipping once every two weeks, with an eye to releasing once a week. That’s a huge impact that would not happen without paying down the skills debt. There’s not any one magical piece of software the company installed to make that change; in fact, it is still working on the technical debt side of the equation today. It made the change happen within, starting with one project done the right way.

Getting people ready for DevOps-style transformation takes a focus on activity and real action on a real project. Non-passive learning cycles, and hands-on work with the new technologies and new methodologies can cure your skills debt, and then you can start paying down your technical debt.

  • 7 Causes of Continuous Delirium

    7 Causes of Continuous Delirium

When we think of CD, we typically think of continuous deployment as a result of continuous delivery, which is a goal of DevOps.

In this article, I coin the phrase, “Continuous Delirium,” to mean unending confusion or bewilderment in development environments. There are probably several examples that could fit the bill here, but for now I offer seven real-world examples. I bet you’ve seen or heard about at least one of these.

Now that I have your attention, here are seven causes of Continuous Delirium, each with cures rooted in DevOps:

No. 1: Insufficient Configuration and Build Management

Insufficient configuration and build management in software builds leads to the same or similar software impurities rearing their ugly heads again and again. You build, test, discover the defect, fix it—or so you think—build again, retest and boom: The same coding error or software malfunction recurs.

“You can cure this malady with a rational approach to the build and configuration management process, checking software in and out with established procedures for each software module using a tracking sheet that identifies the revision of the sub-modules for the entire software product,” notes Jon M. Quigley, founder of Value Transformation, a product development consultancy and training firm based in Lexington, North Carolina.

No. 2: What’s Going On? Who’s Doing What?

When there is no reasonable understanding of the work, who is doing what work and who is responsible for what—and there is no consistent measure of what is good work or bad work—you have a breeding ground for anarchy.

“You cure this ill by establishing what constitutes the appropriate quality of work as well as by periodically reviewing the state of the objective with the receiving or depending entity,” says Quigley. Make sure everyone is on the same page with the same definition of what constitutes quality work and make sure the objectives have not changed. Also, ensure these goals are also clearly understood by all.

No. 3: Confusing Clean Daily Compiles with Testing

When you do not test the software as early as possible and throughout the development process, you can’t really say it has no bugs. Error-free compiling is not error-free software. Software compilation does not have the same investigative effect as using the software in the customer environment.

“Test throughout development using complimentary testing approaches such as testing to requirements, combinations of stimulus testing and exploratory testing, for examples,” says Quigley.

No. 4: Planning Too Far Out to Control

The further you try to plan things out into the future, the less control you have as you follow the project through to conclusion. “When we treat a plan as though we know everything associated with the project for the next 12 to 18 months, we are fooling ourselves,” says Quigley. By breaking projects into bite-sized increments, you can better assure successful completion of sub-projects and of the project as a whole.

No. 5: A Lack of Customer Involvement

Customer involvement is critical to customer satisfaction. “By getting the product or a prototype into the customers’ hands for exploration, you can retrieve feedback for developers,” says Quigley. This may expose the project to risk in the form of the potential for a great deal of change at the customers’ request, but the other side of the coin is the risk that nothing changes and the customer doesn’t use the product at all.

“Rather than try to deliver one incarnation of the product at some future date, break down the delivery into separate iterations that meet prioritized customer expectations one by one as you refine the product and add features as you go along,” says Quigley.

No. 6: Isolating Change Management from Customer Involvement

Customer involvement means there will be change. Change requires change management. There is a given—and correct—assumption that customer involvement will trigger change management at some point. You cannot isolate the one from the other.

Further, just as you can better address customer requests for changes by breaking the project into smaller subsections, so also can you manage budget through change and change management. Project subsections enable you to see the need for change a little at a time so you can create change in a more targeted and cost-effective manner.

No. 7: Forget About Collaboration—at Your Own Peril

It is necessary for DevOps team members to collaborate at all levels, except those where the work on software is so minor that it wouldn’t benefit from shared thought. To maintain development as an expedient process that benefits from all stakeholders, open communications and collaboration must reach and pull from all team members. Otherwise, the project could suffer from a lack of critical input.

The global IT outsourcing market accounted for $314.92 billion in 2015 and is expected to grow to $481.37 billion by 2022, according to a Stratistics MRC report. As software development needs continue to become more in demand, Accelerance aims to better connect organizations with well-matched software development teams by helping them save time and money during procurement, scale rapidly, shorten their time to market and grow their businesses. Designed with its clients in mind, Accelerance¹s matchmaking services are free of charge to ISVs and software-enabled businesses.

³Over the years, we have seen the demand for software development outsourcing grow significantly, making it more critical than ever to expand our global footprint in an effort to best service our clients,² said Steve Mezak, founder and CEO of Accelerance. ³As we continue to grow, our goal is to better connect organizations with well-matched software development teams, allowing companies to make better, more informed decisions about who they decide to partner with ultimately leading to more long-term, successful partnerships.²

Since launching in 2001, Accelerance has achieved the following milestones:

    • Established partnerships with over 50 software development firms in 30 countries, representing 5,000 highly qualified software engineers, offering more than 60 technologies
    • Connected hundreds of clients with outsourcing partners
    • Received more than 6,000 software development team applications for its certified partners network
    • Evaluated over 1,400 international software development teams
    • Arranged work for more than 1,000 engineers

BOSTON – April 28, 2016 – Threat Stack, a leader in cloud security and compliance management, announced today that SessionM, pioneers in mobile marketing cloud technology, selected the Threat Stack Cloud Security PlatformTM (CSP) to secure and protect the company’s cloud-based customer relationship management (CRM) and engagement platform.

SessionM chose Threat Stack’s cloud-native, fully integrated security platform to achieve real-time workload visibility across its cloud infrastructure and to protect against threats and data loss.
