    DevSecOps @ RSA Conference 2017

One again this year, devopsy.kinsta.cloud, Sonatype and RSA Conference are teaming up to bring a Security/DevOps day of learning and networking to RSA Conference 2017 in San Francisco on February 13, 2017.  The event is DevSecOps @ RSA Conference 2017. Building on the previous two years of great events, this yearsevent promises to be even better. Some of the confirmed speakers are below and you can see for yourself what an amazing array of sessions there are. The best part is attending all of the RSA DevSecOps events are free.

    DevSecOps Sessions

The line up for DevSecOps includes DevOps and DevSecOps pioneers, John Willis, Damon Edwards, Jez Humble, Dr. Nicole Forsgren, J. Paul Reed, Josh Corman, Shannon Lietz and more. Check out the site page for full details on speakers and topics.

Attending the full day event (10am to 4pm) is free, but you need to register with RSA Conference. If you are already attending RSA, you need to modify your registration to indicate you are attending DevSecOps (or Rugged DevOps). If you are not already registered you can do so and receive a free expo pass to RSA Conference, which will allow you to register and attend the DevSecOps conference. You can use the code: 1U7DEVOPSXP and register here.

    DevOps Wine-ing (No Whining) Party

In addition to the full day of amazing speakers, we will host the annual DevOps Wine-ing (no whining) cocktail party, immediately following the sessions. You need to be registered separately for the Wine-ing event. There is a link to the eventbrite registration here.

The wine-ing event is from 4:30 to 6:30 and should once again be a great time for the security and DevOps tribes to intermingle. A tip of the hat to Josh Corman who is speaking at DevSecOps for starting the DevOps Wine-ing party 4 years ago.

Security @ the Speed of DevOps Lunch ‘n Learn

On the following day, Tuesday we will host a lunch-n-learn on the “Security at the Speed of DevOps” report we are co-producing with the Cloud Security Alliance. We will have a panel including George and some leading DevSecOps and Cloud Security experts discussing the findings over lunch at Jillians. Again this event is free but you need to register for it here.

The report is being written by George Hulme and is based on a survey co-produced and distributed by devopsy.kinsta.cloud and the Cloud Security Alliance. You can participate in the survey (we need your help here, so please do) by taking a few minutes at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/RSACSADEVOPS. Feel free to tell your friends about it as well.

security at the speed of devops

We will be distributing copies of the report at RSA Conference, as well as digitally via devopsy.kinsta.cloud. We will also be distributing several other surprise giveaways at the event as well.

Yes, this years RSA Conference will feature lots of DevSecOps and you can partake in all of it for free. Of course this wouldn’t be possible without the help of a great bunch of sponsors who have stepped up this year to support the events. In addition to RSA Conference, Sonatype and devopsy.kinsta.cloud, sponsors for the event are:

    Gold Sponsors

CA Technologies, HPE, White Hat Security, Veracode, Cloud Passage, New Context and Illumio

    Silver Sponsors

    Signal Sciences, Twistlock

See you on the 13th in San Francisco!

  • DOES San Francisco 2016: Adrian Cockroft On Retaining Talent

DOES San Francisco 2016: Adrian Cockroft On Retaining Talent

Another one of the over 50 video interviews we did at DevOps Enterprise Summit 2016 is our discussion with Adrian Cockroft. Adrian is was one of the last presenters at DOES this year, but that was a good enough reason to stick around until the end. Adrian’s presentation was on the challenges in retaining talent at high tech organizations.

Before we dive into the talent conversation though, Adrian talks a bit about his own journey from Netflix where he pioneered so much of what we see in the DevOps market today. After Netflix, Adrian joined Battery Ventures, where he had the opportunity to go visit with numerous large organizations and find out what was working for them and what their challenges were. He was able to use that information to help guide Battery in which companies they should invest in to add to their portfolio. After several years at Battery, Adrian has recently left to join AWS where he will once again be directly involved as the VP of Cloud Architecture.

But as I said earlier, Adrian’s presentation (truth be told he only had one slide or so, it was more of him speaking) was about the lack of enough qualified people to fill the ranks. This pressure results in successful companies having to “grow” their existing talent. But as Adrian points out the very act of letting this talent grow also leads them to move on. As they become more prominent in the field they are more likely to be recruited away. So how do you retain talent? Adrian tells us some of the things Netflix did to keep their engineers. Of course what Netflix did does not translate to many traditional organizations though.

Obviously, monetary compensation helps an awful lot. But there are things beyond money (sometimes). Things like giving people titles like distinguished engineer for example.

Adrian also brought up the example of Brent in the Phoenix project. How by giving him a different role, you not only remove the bottle neck, but also keep him happy in his new role.

As usual, it was great listening and learning from Adrian. His reputation as one of the leading lights in the DevOps space is well earned and well deserved. Enjoy the conversation!

  • Docker On Windows, One Engineering System, Microsoft Uses DevOps To Reinvent Itself

Docker On Windows, One Engineering System, Microsoft Uses DevOps To Reinvent Itself

While at DOES San Francisco 2016 last week I had a chance to sit down with two presenters who work at Microsoft. One is someone I have interviewed before at both DOES and here on devopsy.kinsta.cloud, Sam Guckenheimer, Product Owner of Microsoft Visual Studio Cloud Services. Joining Sam and I is Ed Blankenship, Product Manager at Microsoft for Visual Studio Team Services. We had a wide ranging discussion on Microsoft’s own DevOps journey including the move to one engineering system, to SaaS based systems, security and finally Docker on Windows.

Ed and Sam presented at DOES on Microsoft’s move to a single engineering system that now serves over 62,000 users within Microsoft alone! Sam also did a Lean Coffee session on security and compliance. All in all it was a great discussion with Sam and Ed. I know it is a bit long at 17+ minutes, but have a listen and enjoy.

Also if you are interested in Docker on Windows, please check out this free and easy hands on lab Microsoft has made available to our readers here. The lab allows you to install Docker on Windows 10 and more. You don’t need anything on your end it is all self-contained in a web browser.

  • DevOps Enterprise Summit 2016: The DevOps Transformation Continues

DevOps Enterprise Summit 2016: The DevOps Transformation Continues

I had a great few days out in San Francisco at the 3rd annual DevOps Enterprise Summit produced by IT Revolution and Gene Kim. Once again Electric Cloud was back as the founding sponsor. Beyond that there were a host of other sponsors. But the real stars of the show are the many speakers from organizations the world over who relay their own DevOps Transformation stories.

I had a chance to sit down the Gene Kim and Derek Langone, CEO of Xebia Labs to talk a little bit about what makes DOES so special:

Another great thing about DOES is that at this point many of the speakers have been coming back year after year. So while we hear about new companies on their DevOps transformation, we also check in and see where others have progressed since last year. I told someone it is like a new season on a Netflix series and after waiting a year, we can binge and catch up on what we missed.

Another thing I spoke to Derek and Gene about is that not all DevOps transformations are successful. In fact some fail. From a learning perspective we can learn more from the failures than we do from the successes. You can hear what Gene and Derek have to say on this as well.

devopstvsquareThis video is one of the 25 that are up on our YouTube channel, DevOpsTV from DOES San Francisco 2016. There are another 25 or so videos that will be posted in the next few days as well. This should give you a good idea of what happened at DOES this year.

Also while on DevOpsTV, you should check out DOES videos from San Francisco 2015, London 2016 and almost 300 videos on DevOps in total!
