  • Electric Cloud and Dynatrace Partnership Shifts Feedback Loops Farther Left in the Software Delivery Pipeline

SAN JOSE, Calif., Feb. 7, 2017 – Electric Cloud (http://electric-cloud.com), the leader in DevOps Release Automation, today announced a partnership with Dynatrace enabling organizations to uncover end user, performance and operational cost impacting issues in cloud environments and enterprise software much earlier in the delivery pipeline.

The new bi-directional integration is the first of its kind – enabling closed feedback loop between DevOps and Release pipelines and environments in ElectricFlow and Dynatrace.

The integration allows users to detect performance issues earlier in the lifecycle, have faster remediation and recovery, and prevent outages with automated policy-based rollback and self-healing. These enhance product quality and customer experience and give Operations confidence in the Release and environments and deployments fidelity.

“In a world where batch sizes are shrinking and the pace of releases is increasing, having automated policy-based control in the pre-production environment proactively reduces the chances of end user, performance and operational issues in production,” said Steve Brodie, CEO at Electric Cloud. “Dynatrace, like Electric Cloud, was named a leader in a 2016 Gartner Magic Quadrant. The Application Performance Monitoring suite provides full-stack monitoring—looking deeper than typical testing tools—and allows ElectricFlow to automatically trigger the appropriate actions needed to bring the system back to a good state.”

“This partnership between Dynatrace and Electric Cloud helps enterprises reduce the risk of end user impacting production deployments by monitoring and looping feedback earlier in the application lifecycle, “ said Andreas Grabner, DevOps Advocate at Dynatrace. “Customers will now be able to immediately see the potential impact of code changes, remediate and fix poor app behavior earlier in the lifecycle. This greatly reduces time spent course-correcting in production and frees up more time for innovation.”

ElectricFlow is a DevOps Release Automation solution that orchestrates the end-to-end software delivery pipeline from Development to Production. ElectricFlow is used by IT organizations to frequently and reliably deploy mission-critical applications at scale. It standardizes and automates software deployment tools and processes for consistent build, test and deployment procedures that speed cycle times, eliminate bottlenecks and reduce IT capital expenditure and operating costs.

Dynatrace is an application performance management solution that accelerates innovation, time-to-market and software quality through fact based decisions. Users can identify, for example, whether code changes cause any performance, scalability or architectural regressions. Developers can then stop the build early and allow only quality code in production, resulting in the production of better software faster.

The new Dynatrace plugin for ElectricFlow is available at http://electric-cloud.com/plugins/directory/p/dynatrace/

  • Introducing Hazelcast Jet – A New Lightweight, Distributed Data Processing Engine

Introducing Hazelcast Jet – A New Lightweight, Distributed Data Processing Engine

Palo Alto, Calif., February 7, 2017 – Hazelcast, the leading open source in-memory data grid (IMDG) with hundreds of thousands of installed clusters and over 17 million server starts per month, today launched Hazelcast Jet – a distributed processing engine for big data streams. With Hazelcast’s IMDG providing storage functionality, Hazelcast Jet is a new Apache 2 licensed open source project that performs parallel execution to enable data-intensive applications to operate in near real-time. Using directed acyclic graphs (DAG) to model relationships between individual steps in the data processing pipeline, Hazelcast Jet is simple to deploy and can execute both batch and stream-based data processing applications. Hazelcast Jet is appropriate for applications that require a near real-time experience such as sensor updates in IoT architectures (house thermostats, lighting systems), in-store e-commerce systems and social media platforms.

IoT devices churn out massive amounts of data which flows to computers for analysis. In some cases, analyses must be done in near real-time – log analysis, monitoring, fraud detection, dashboard data extraction, and placement. However, there are challenges to handling large amounts of data:

    ● Ingest high volumes of data, while keeping up-to-date with what’s coming in;
    ● Anomaly detection, recognize and validate the correctness of data entering the system;
    ● Analyze, aggregate, extrapolate and react to a situation in near real-time;
    ● Work with extremely low latency access to data; and
    ● Reporting, whether running on-demand or via scheduled batch processing.

Hazelcast Jet is built on top of a one-record-per-time architecture (sometimes known as continuous operators). This means that it processes incoming records as soon as possible, opposed to accumulating records into micro-batches, consequently lowering latency for applications. Jet ingests data at high-velocity (via socket, file, HDFS or Kafka interfaces), and processes the business logic or complex computation on incoming data. A pure in-memory approach, Jet is 20x faster than Hadoop, enabling users to meet service-level requirements. It is extremely simple to program and to deploy – in particular Jet can be fully embedded for OEMs and for Microservices – making it is easier for manufacturers to build and maintain next generation systems.

    Important components include:

    ● Events-based architecture for low latency Transaction Processing System (TPS) applications
    ● Uses directed acyclic graphs (DAG) to model data flow
    ● High level java.util.stream API for great simplicity.
    ● Low level Core (DAG) API for maximum flexibility allowing direct manipulation of vertices representing data source readers, joiners, sorters, aggregators and data sinks
    ● Distributed connectors for reading and writing: Hazelcast IMDG Map and List, HDFS, Kafka, File, Socket

Greg Luck, CEO of Hazelcast, said: “Hazelcast Jet is a super fast, low latency, next generation DAG Engine for Big Data processing. We believe that the Hadoop and Spark ecosystems are too complex to program and to deploy and have set out to bring Hazelcast’s legendary simplicity to Big Data. We have designed it as a general purpose engine for the intersect of Big Data programmers and Java programmers. But if you are already a Hazelcast user or have data in Hazelcast it will be the easiest way to solve your Big Data problems. ”

Hazelcast will be providing 24×7 enterprise support subscriptions for Hazelcast Jet.

  • Anchore Expands Container Image Discovery, Deep Inspection and Analysis With Enhanced Navigator Service

Anchore Expands Container Image Discovery, Deep Inspection and Analysis With Enhanced Navigator Service

Santa Barbara, CA  – February 7, 2017 – Anchore, Inc., announced today new functionality for its free Navigator service, a simple and powerful user interface that allows application developers and data center operations teams to search for and inspect container images across multiple registries, including DockerHub. Additional public and third party private registries will be added in the first quarter of 2017. Using Anchore Navigator, users can perform deep inspections of container images, including package manifest, software libraries, configuration files and security policies.

Finding the right container image and keeping track of updates is becoming increasingly complicated with nearly 500,000 images on DockerHub and thousands more hosted by cloud providers such as Amazon and Google, as well as a growing number of private registries hosted by independent software vendors. With Navigator users can quickly search for images that meet their requirements including detailed content, security and compliance status. In addition to current content, detailed analysis of historic images is maintained including the frequency of updates made to images, ensuring they are well maintained and allow for a user to subscribe to notifications when an image has been updated.

“While end-users welcome the simplicity containers bring to deploying off-the-shelf applications,  software vendors face a number of adoption challenges,” said Saïd Ziouani, CEO and Cofounder of Anchore. “Many enterprises are reluctant to deploy a third party container without knowing what is inside the container or if the container has introduced new risks into their organization in terms of security, compliance and overall best practices.”

With Anchore’s Navigator software vendors and service providers can enable their customers to verify the compliance of container images without needing to download and analyze the images themselves. This validation by an independent third party, using open source tools with a published certification policy allows enterprises to deploy third party containers with confidence.

“Shipping Scality’s applications as containers greatly simplifies deployment and maintenance for our customers,”said Giorgio Regni, Founder and CTO at Scality. “However, enterprise customers want to be sure that the containers they are deploying are secure and well maintained. Using Anchore’s tools we can define strict policies for security and compliance that ensure only images that meet our stringent security requirements are released. Anchore’s Navigator allows our customers to independently verify the certification status of all their images at any time, as well as define their own specific certification policies.”

  • Avi Networks’ Software-Defined Load Balancers Elastically Scale Applications from Zero to One Million Transactions Per Second With No Impact on Performance

Avi Networks, the leader in next-generation application services, today announced it has achieved breakthrough scalability with its elastic services fabric consisting of software-defined load balancers. Avi Networks’ software delivered one million SSL transactions per second (TPS) to a single web application, automatically scaling up load balancing services from zero to peak traffic, after which it scaled down to normal levels just as easily. This is unlike traditional hardware load balancers such as F5 Networks or Citrix Netscaler which would require huge investments in capital equipment that goes unused during normal periods of traffic.

Avi’s centrally managed, elastic services fabric is ideal for enterprises across industries requiring highly scalable, automated application services to handle traffic spikes due to denial of service (DoS) attacks, seasonal events such as Black Friday, and hybrid cloud use cases. It empowers IT departments to pay for maximum load balancing capacity on an as-needed basis, and scale it down as traffic returns to normal levels. With this demonstration, Avi Networks has completely debunked a common myth that companies must spend millions of dollars on hardware load balancers to handle large transaction volumes or high throughput.

The Internet is seeing ever increasing volumes of encrypted traffic in response to the higher incidence of cyberattacks – over 50 percent of all Internet traffic, including Netflix movies, is now encrypted with SSL/TLS. This presents new challenges for network managers and application architects who must ensure that their applications are secure and responsive for end users. The growing amount of encrypted traffic puts enormous strain on load balancers that must offload or decrypt these SSL-encrypted packets before they reach the application.

Avi Networks conducted the comprehensive demo on SSL traffic to prove how a software-defined architecture for load balancing delivers the most elastic and cost-effective approach for the growing volume of encrypted traffic. For the demo, Avi ran its software in front of a single web application to load balance a continuously growing volume of SSL encrypted transactions from over 320 clients. Avi’s built-in visibility and analytics dashboard was used to monitor the build-up of transactions and the application response. The demo was performed on the Google Cloud Platform but can easily be replicated on-premises or in any other cloud. It ran on 40 servers at an infrastructure cost of just $1.20 per server per hour, scaling out to handle one million SSL transactions per second and scaling back just as easily and efficiently.

“Enterprise customers increasingly value agile and flexible network infrastructure that supports their digital transformation initiatives by dynamically scaling up or down to meet application delivery requirements in a multi-cloud context,” said Brad Casemore, research director for datacenter networks at IDC. “Avi Networks’ test results demonstrate that a software-defined approach to application delivery can also attain a high degree of raw performance in conjunction with agility and flexibility.”

The demo is relevant for a number of use cases including:

Driving greater elasticity to respond to seasonal changes (e.g. Black Friday) in application traffic
Handling DDoS attacks by elastically autoscaling until the attack is mitigated
Managing modern container-based microservices applications at scale
Seamlessly scaling beyond the data center by automatically bursting to the cloud
Eliminating overprovisioning caused by expensive, purpose-built hardware load balancers
Scaling up or down dynamically through integration with native cloud APIs

“This demo validates what we hear from our customers everyday – our software-defined load balancing architecture brings webscale IT principles to manage and deliver their applications,” said Amit Pandey, CEO of Avi Networks. “With our platform, enterprises get a flexible, analytics-driven load balancing solution that can replace legacy load balancers at a fraction of the cost, bringing true elasticity and automation to application services in the data center or the cloud.”

  • Illumio Brings Adaptive Segmentation to Cisco, Arista, AWS, and Azure

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Jan. 31, 2017 — Illumio announced today the company is taking another step forward in making its Adaptive Security Platform (ASP)™ the new foundation for data center and cloud security with industry-first capabilities and support for ACLs on Cisco and Dynamic Filters on Arista data center network switches, as well as AWS Security Groups and Azure Network Security Groups. These new capabilities will be delivered to market during 2017 and the switch integrations will be demonstrated on the floor of the RSA conference in February.

“As segmentation becomes the core strategy for data center and cloud security, organizations are now looking at how other elements of their compute environment can be used to enforce these policies,” said PJ Kirner, chief technology officer and founder of Illumio. “Our customers have asked us to efficiently coordinate policy across their data center and cloud environments, simplifying management of the security control plane. This expansion of our platform builds on our previously demonstrated capability of programming the F5 LTM and AFM and represents our next step towards Illumio’s vision for adaptive segmentation.”

Today organizations are looking at segmentation to move beyond reactive breach detection solutions to a proactive protection model that stops the lateral movement of bad actors. However, that shift often comes with additional operational overhead and inconsistent policies that don’t scale across their environments.

“Despite the rapid increase in cybersecurity spending focused on implementing stronger security controls to limit access to sensitive data and applications – organizations of all sizes don’t always end up with more secure environments,” said Jon Oltsik, ESG’s senior principal analyst and founder of the firm’s cybersercurity service. “The ability to drive segmentation in depth throughout the data center and cloud can be a critical next step in securing data center and cloud environments.”

By extending Illumio ASP’s enforcement point ecosystem from the workload (bare-metal servers, virtual machines, containerized hosts) to the additional security controls in the network and cloud, Illumio is delivering on the promise of segmentation and is ending the need to manage multiple, disconnected policy models. This provides three core benefits:

    1. Eliminates the security gaps generated by the disparate, uncoordinated security policies enforced separately at the workload, in the network, and in cloud environments.
    2. Reduces the operational overhead of manual segmentation provisioning by taking advantage of software-driven automation of security policies.
    3. Stops the addition of unnecessary firewall choke points or SDN deployments to achieve robust segmentation-based security.

“One of the biggest challenges in security is battling complexity and that’s amplified by increasing heterogeneity that we see in customer data centers and cloud environments. Legacy infrastructure combined with virtualization and cloud means there is opportunity for coordinated points of policy enforcement,” said Eric Hanselman, chief analyst of 451 Research. “We see segmentation in depth addressing a real requirement for customers who are looking to both strengthen security and simplify operations by centralizing and harmonizing policy and enforcement across different environments.”

    About Illumio

Illumio stops cyber threats by controlling the lateral movement of unauthorized communications through its breakthrough adaptive segmentation technology. The company’s Adaptive Security Platform™ visualizes application traffic and delivers continuous, scalable and dynamic policy and enforcement to every bare-metal server, VM, container, and VDI within data centers and public clouds. Using Illumio, enterprises such as Morgan Stanley, Plantronics, Salesforce, King Entertainment, NetSuite, Oak Hill Advisors, and Creative Artists Agency have achieved secure application and cloud migration, environmental segmentation, compliance, and high-value application protection from breaches and threats with no changes to applications or infrastructure. • Linux Academy Survey Shows Vast Skills-Gap in Cloud Technology Talent and Experience

DALLAS, TX  – January, 2017 – Most businesses believe there is a scarcity of skilled Linux and cloud technology professionals in the workforce and that current professionals are not getting the training they need, according to a recent survey by Linux Academy, the foremost online Linux and cloud training platform and community.

When Linux Academy surveyed nearly 900 IT professionals on Linux and cloud technology training trends, 76 percent said there is a global shortage of talent with proper Linux and cloud technology skills; the majority of respondents said their companies require them to have various levels of regular training on Linux and cloud technologies; and more than a third of respondents thought the IT professionals they’ve worked with have minimal understanding of or no experience with these technologies.

“Companies should pay attention to these survey findings, particularly with the continued proliferation of open source and cloud technologies,” said Anthony James, founder, Linux Academy. “The advancement of these technologies is clearly outpacing the pool of professionals who are able to service and manage them. By the time professionals receive the training they need, the technologies have progressed, making their training obsolete. This underscores not only the need for access to timely and affordable training, but also for companies to further invest their employee’s skills.”

The two greatest impediments to receiving training on Linux and cloud technologies are a lack of time and money, with 38 percent paying up to $500 for one course. A combined 77 percent of respondents said their companies only spend up to $25,000 annually on Linux and cloud training for their employees. Sixty percent of companies have between one and 20 employees managing these technologies.

When it comes to recruiting Linux and cloud professionals, a combined 72 percent of respondents indicated there is little talent to pull from in their area, and those who are there are hard to find; sixty-seven percent either said they either always or sometimes have a hard time recruiting these professionals. The greatest challenges companies have to recruiting are a general lack of skilled talent and lack of resources to find and attract them. It takes most companies four to six weeks to fill Linux and cloud related jobs.

The training topics IT professionals believed to be the most beneficial were Linux, AWS, and DevOps. While answers varied by industry – which included technology, healthcare, finance, government, manufacturing, education, business/corporate, retail, and others – most respondents believe that formal certifications such as RHCSA and RHCE are somewhat important to their vertical.

“The findings suggest that specific technology skill sets and related certifications play an important role in professional development. Online training providers, which help professionals learn these skills at a faster, more economical pace and in a practical, real-world environment, are best-positioned to help close the talent gap,” added James.
