    About the Book

DevOps for the Modern Enterprise confronts the uphill battle that many organizations face when it comes to the modernization of their legacy IT infrastructure. Most have evolved over the years by learning lessons from traditional or legacy manufacturing, such as creating a production process that puts the emphasis on the process instead of the people performing the tasks and by allowing organizations to treat people like resources to try to achieve high-quality outcomes. But those practices and ideas are failing modern IT, where collaboration and creativeness are required to achieve high-performing, high-quality success. Using principles from Agile, Lean and DevOps, as well as first-hand examples from the enterprise world, Hering addresses the different challenges that legacy organizations face as they transform into modern IT departments.

  • Solebit Secures $11 Million in Series A Funding Led by ClearSky Security

Investment to Accelerate Radically Disruptive Cybersecurity Solutions &

Expand Global Headquarters to North America

San Francisco, Calif., March 14, 2018 – Solebit, a transformative cyber security company delivering ground-breaking and the most effective evasion proof approach to the identification and prevention of zero-day malware and unknown threats, today announced the closing of an $11 million Series A funding round led by ClearSky Security. Solebit will leverage these funds to accelerate adoption and deployment of the SoleGATE Security Platform, and immediate growth in sales and marketing capabilities as Solebit establishes its new global headquarters in Silicon Valley, California. Additional investors participating in this funding round include MassMutual Ventures and Glilot Capital Partners.

Targeted attacks continue to grow at an exponential pace through a variety of vectors. Other than Solebit’s patented technology, there are no other commercially available technologies and approaches in the market today that enable evasion-proof real-time detection and prevention of embedded malicious code.

“Solebit provides the most effective, real-time, and accurate cyber-attack prevention platform that is incredibly simple to use, integrate and manage,” said Peter Kuper, Managing Director, ClearSky Security. “As organizations struggle to better manage risk against unknown threats, Solebit is ideally positioned to be a trusted partner to both enterprise and large-scale security vendors as they contend with ever increasingly sophisticated attackers. We are confident that Solebit has identified an attractive growth market that is currently suffering from ineffective sandbox technologies.  Our investment will augment Solebit’s world-class team of engineering, sales and customer care professionals to further promote its standing amongst the world’s great cyber security companies.”

Most modern cyber-attacks use data files to take advantage of vulnerabilities and active content (macros, JavaScript, etc.) to deliver malicious code into the organization. The SoleGATE Security Platform is anchored by DvC™, a patented, real-time, signature-less engine, which conclusively identifies malware threats regardless of evasion technique, file type, operating system, and client-side application whether on-premise or in the cloud. The Solebit engine processes millions of transactions every day and does not rely on heuristics, patterns or behaviors, which makes it evasion-proof for today’s modern attacks and future ready as well.

“Attackers still possess the edge, particularly in zero-day attacks, despite considerable security investment,” said Boris Vaynberg, CEO of Solebit. “DvC™ assumes that there is no legitimate reason for executable code to be present in any data file. DvC™ also accurately identifies and blocks malicious active content using advanced flow analysis, de-obfuscation techniques and deep content evaluation, to reveal threat intent within any data file covering machine, operating system and application levels, thereby rendering such sandbox-evading malware harmless to the enterprise.”

    About Solebit

Solebit provides the fastest, most accurate and cost-effective approach for the identification and prevention of zero-day malware and unknown threats. Solebit was founded in 2014 by a team of world-class cyber security experts, all graduates of the elite technology units in the Israel Defense Forces with years of experience in offensive and defensive security. It counts a variety of leading US and European financial organizations, tech, defense contractors, security vendors, cloud and telecom service providers as active customers. • ParkMyCloud Announces “SmartParking” for Microsoft Azure

Cloud Cost Optimization Platform Expands Powerful Automation Engine for Maximum Savings on Cloud Resources

March 13, 2018 (Dulles, VA) – ParkMyCloud, the leading enterprise platform for continuous cost control in public cloud, announced today that it has released SmartParking for Microsoft Azure, allowing Azure users to automate cloud cost optimization.

The ParkMyCloud platform helps Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform customers save money on cloud resources by automatically integrating cost control into their DevOps processes. ParkMyCloud saves money by scheduling cloud resources to turn off when they are not needed – which they call “parking”.

The newly released expansion of SmartParking — which was first released for AWS in January — uses Azure Monitor data to find patterns in virtual machine utilization. ParkMyCloud then uses that data to automatically recommend specific parking schedules for each virtual machine to turn them off when they are typically idle. This minimizes idle time to maximize savings on cloud resources.

Using ParkMyCloud’s recommendations, some AWS customers are saving more than 80% on the cost of their cloud resources. Now, Azure users — which make up the fastest-growing portion of the cloud market — can get the same cost reduction, saving huge portions of cloud spend  that would have otherwise been wasted.

“With this release, we extend the powerful SmartParking technology to Azure, allowing users to optimize their spend and savings,” said ParkMyCloud CTO Bill Supernor. “Our AWS customers have been excited about SmartParking, and we’re glad to now deliver it to our Azure users as well.”

ParkMyCloud customer Sysco Foods has more than 500 users across 50 teams using ParkMyCloud to manage their AWS environments. “When I’m asked by a team how they should use the tool, they’re exceedingly happy that they can go in and see when systems are idle,” Kurt Brochu, Sysco Foods’ Senior Manager of the Cloud Enablement Team, said of SmartParking. “To me, the magic is that the platform empowers the end user to make decisions for the betterment of the business.”

ParkMyCloud plans to release SmartParking for Google Cloud in April.

    About ParkMyCloud

ParkMyCloud is a SaaS platform that automatically identifies and eliminates public cloud resource waste, reducing spending by 65% or more — think “Nest for the cloud.” AWS, Azure and Google users such as McDonald’s, Sysco Foods, Unilever, Avid, and Sage Software have used ParkMyCloud to cut their cloud spending by millions of dollars. ParkMyCloud helps companies like these optimize and govern cloud usage by integrating cost control into their DevOps processes. For more information, visit https://www.parkmycloud.com.

  • Mesosphere DC/OS 1.11 Enables Edge Computing, Multi-Cloud Operations and Elastic Scale for Data Services, Kubernetes

Intelligently pools resources across clouds and automates operations for a broad range of workloads to empower the enterprise with personalization, machine learning and IoT applications

SAN FRANCISCO – March 8, 2018 – Today, Mesosphere — the creators of DC/OS, the premier platform for building and running data-intensive, containerized applications — announced the availability of Mesosphere DC/OS 1.11. The latest release enables edge and multi-cloud operations with new features to intelligently pool resources, schedule a broad range of workloads, and manage dynamic, distributed infrastructure from a single management interface. Driven by demand from enterprise customers like athenahealth and Royal Caribbean, DC/OS uniquely automates the underlying infrastructure so that teams can deliver high-value services, like personalized experiences, machine learning, and IoT applications, faster and more efficiently.

“Mesosphere DC/OS powers the real-time decision-making engine that allows millions of our mobile users to automatically and seamlessly switch between cellular and Wi-Fi networks for the best possible customer experience,” said Thorsten Mueller, SVP Products, Group Innovation, Deutsche Telekom AG. “We’re thrilled to see Mesosphere continue to make it easy to run containerized applications and open source data tools elastically, across data centers and multiple cloud providers simultaneously.”

New features in DC/OS 1.11 include a new unified control plane to enable seamless edge and multi-cloud operations. This consistent management experience, on-premise or at the edge, enables business continuity, disaster recovery, and cloud-bursting capabilities. DC/OS 1.11 greatly simplifies the deployment and management of hybrid and multi-cloud operations: unlike other solutions, DC/OS can span multiple cloud environments so workloads can be deployed to cloud X or cloud Y automatically. Production Kubernetes-as-a-Service on DC/OS is also now generally available with one click, allowing operations teams to deploy, scale and upgrade Kubernetes. The release also adds multi-layer security features to help secure the entire application stack, including data pipelines.

“In a hurry to modernize the stack, enterprise companies sometimes turn, first, to public providers to get as-a-service capabilities that come at a high price, both monetary and technological, since any application developed on these services is tied to proprietary APIs,” said Rhett Dillingham, vice president and senior analyst at Moor Insights and Strategy. “Not only does DC/OS power those same data services, but the platform also allows the enterprise the freedom to choose any combination of infrastructure — public clouds, private clouds, or datacenter — with truly elastic scale.”

“As we’ve seen from our customer base of Global 1000 companies, the enterprise has a tremendous opportunity in front of them: take control of their data, a business’ greatest asset, and turn it into insight and actions that drive profit and growth,” said Florian Leibert, CEO and co-founder, Mesosphere. “DC/OS provides the platform to power real-time, data-driven applications, like those for connected cars, personalized experiences, and machine learning, all with the right infrastructure on your terms.”

    Edge and Multi-Cloud Operations

DC/OS 1.11 provides the ability to pool any combination of cloud, datacenter and edge compute infrastructure into a single logical resource pool and intelligently schedule workloads anywhere from a unified user interface. Operators can focus on the services they need, and not the underlying infrastructure.

New features in DC/OS 1.11 enable the following:

    • Edge and multi-cloud federation: A single DC/OS interface can be linked to multiple clusters for consistent management. A DC/OS cluster can also stretch beyond local nodes, which means remote offices or edge infrastructures can have minimal footprint.
    • Business continuity and disaster recovery: Deliver highly available services using fault domains to enable services that are resistant to outages within racks, availability zones or even cloud regions.
    • Cloud bursting: Easily add or remove remote capacity to on-premise clusters from regional datacenters or public clouds to accommodate rapid demand spikes and optimize infrastructure utilization.

    Kubernetes-as-a-Service

DC/OS makes it effortless to set up and operate a pure, open source, and production-ready Kubernetes cluster on any infrastructure. With a single click, DC/OS automates more than 20 distinct steps and many hours of work required to set up a secure and highly-available Kubernetes cluster. The same is true for scaling up, scaling down, and upgrading without any service disruption. DC/OS 1.11 is certified with the latest Kubernetes 1.9 release by the Cloud Native Computing Foundation. Since DC/OS has a modular architecture, and uses a pure open source Kubernetes implementation, the latest version of Kubernetes will always be quickly available on DC/OS.

    Enhanced Security

Data-rich applications have many components, and securing all of them can be hard. Containerized microservices are dynamically scheduled, discovered, load-balanced, killed and restarted by design, compounding security challenges even more.

DC/OS 1.11 adds new layers of security for data services, which simplifies regulatory compliance. First, sensitive information in transit is now encrypted. Second, DC/OS provides data services integration with common authentication, authorization, and access control mechanisms such as Kerberos, LDAP, and Active Directory. Additionally, DC/OS 1.11 improves secrets management, which is used by authorized applications to share sensitive information. Also included is new support for hierarchies and multi-team isolation to make it easier to manage which secrets can be accessed by applications or teams.

    Availability

Mesosphere DC/OS 1.11 is available now at https://dcos.io/install/. Learn more by visiting Mesosphere’s DC/OS 1.11 launch blog or sign up for an upcoming webinar.

  • Epsagon Raises $4.1 Million to Make Application Performance Monitoring for Serverless Architectures Great Again

Tel Aviv, Israel – March 7, 2018 – Epsagon, a provider of automated end-to-end performance monitoring technology for serverless architectures, announced today the completion of a $4.1 million seed round. Led by Lightspeed Venture Partners, StageOne Ventures and Ariel Maislos, the capital will be used to expand R&D efforts as well as build out Epsagon’s marketing and sales units.

While serverless architecture eliminates the need to have access to the infrastructure, typical serverless architectures are highly distributed, event-driven and contain many managed elements, including databases, storage and third-party SaaS-based APIs. This in effect takes control away from the DevOps and R&D teams, making it very difficult to properly monitor the system and understand where potential problems exist.

Epsagon, founded in 2017 by veterans of the Israel Defense Forces’ cyber intelligence unit, has built an AI-powered performance monitoring platform for serverless architectures that can predict performance issues before they occur, allowing any company – from SMBs to large enterprises – to eliminate downtime by proactively identifying and flagging potential problems.

Epsagon’s AI technology can quickly understand where the trouble spots are located, providing customers with 100% visibility into their systems, enabling them to understand how different events are connected as well as the ability to quickly troubleshoot, and eliminate, issues.

“For serverless architecture, the name of the game today is all about understanding what is going on inside your system in a manner which not only gives you the ability to easily troubleshoot when needed, but that can predict problems you don’t even know exist yet,” said Nitzan Shapira, Co-Founder and CEO of Epsagon. “We have built a dedicated solution that answers the unique needs that serverless architectures demand – and the feedback we have received from our pilot customers indicates that we are solving a major challenge for their respective businesses.”

As opposed to older APM providers that only offer support for monolithic applications, or newer startups that can’t provide a dedicated solution for serverless architecture, Epsagon focuses on delivering an automated end-to-end analysis for distributed applications, giving the company a unique opportunity to quickly capture significant market share.

“Serverless architecture will become a dominant platform in the years to come and Epsagon is addressing a major challenge faced by companies adopting serverless”  said Yoni Cheifetz of Lightspeed Venture Partners. “From our first time meeting with the founders, the Epsagon team has exceeded our expectations and we are very excited to be working together.”

“The growing number of companies moving to serverless architectures, along with the parallel increase in applications, has made managing the systems extremely tedious and challenging,” said Yoav Samet of StageOne Ventures. “Epsagon’s solution is perfectly suited to meet the demands of today’s cloud-first, application-heavy enterprise environments.”

  • Cloud Native Computing Foundation Announces Kubernetes® as First Graduated Project

Container orchestration system widely deployed at scale with numerous global organizations

SONOMA, Calif., March 6, 2018 – Open Source Leadership Summit – The Cloud Native Computing Foundation® (CNCF®), which sustains and integrates open source technologies like Kubernetes® and Prometheus™, today announced that Kubernetes is the first project to graduate. To move from incubation to graduate, projects must demonstrate thriving adoption, a documented, structured governance process, and a strong commitment to community success and inclusivity.

“Kubernetes led to the creation of the CNCF as the first project accepted by the Technical Operating Committee (TOC) a little over two years ago,” said Chris Aniszczyk, COO of the Cloud Native Computing Foundation. “With the project’s rapid growth, broad participation from numerous organizations, cloud providers and users, and proven ability to operate at scale, the TOC readily endorsed Kubernetes moving on from incubation to graduate. It signals that Kubernetes is mature as an open source project and resilient enough to manage containers at scale across any industry in companies of all sizes.”

For more Kubernetes milestones and its tenure at CNCF, read this blog.

Established, global organizations like Uber, Bloomberg, Blackrock, BlaBlaCar, The New York Times, Lyft, eBay, Buffer, Squarespace, Ancestry, GolfNow, Goldman Sachs and many others use Kubernetes in production at massive scale. Furthermore, according to Redmonk, 71 percent of the Fortune 100 use containers and more than 50 percent of Fortune 100 companies use Kubernetes as their container orchestration platform.

To officially graduate from incubating status, the project also adopted the CNCF Code of Conduct, defined its own governance structure and established a Steering Committee. Today committers come from multiple companies and lists who have designated responsibility over different parts of the Kubernetes codebase.

Additionally, Kubernetes also had to earn (and maintain) a Core Infrastructure Initiative Best Practices Badge. Completed in August of 2016, the CII badge shows an ongoing commitment to code quality and security best practices.

“The Kubernetes project is proud to graduate into a full CNCF project as well as to have helped the organization launch and grow into the industry-leading position it has today. This project and company ecosystem has changed the face of infrastructure in the cloud. The Kubernetes community looks forward to maturing the impact cloud native development has had in the industry as a whole,” said Sarah Novotny, Open Source Strategy Lead, Google Cloud.

“Kubernetes has become transcendent in its ability to shatter assumptions about what is possible in an open source project. Ascending from incubation to a full-fledged CNCF project puts the finishing touches on a lighthouse built with care to guide other communities toward conscientious success,” said Jaice Singer DuMars, Kubernetes Project Ambassador, Microsoft

    Availability and Oversight

The open source container orchestration system includes apps, services, network storage, cluster management and performance and stability features. Kubernetes is released under the Apache License v2.0 and is overseen by a self-selected team of active contributors to the project. The 13-person Steering Committee guides the project’s day-to-day management, including community development and technical processes. CIOs and IT professionals can further rely on BMC’s market-leading digital business automation platform to realize and accelerate digital transformation

HOUSTON – March 6, 2018 – BMC, a global leader in IT solutions for the digital enterprise, today expanded its market-leading Control-M Managed File Transfer offering to include support for all file transfers – internal and external, in the cloud or on-premises – from a single, end-to-end digital business automation platform. With BMC’s Control-M solution, companies have instant visibility into the status of file transfers and business application workloads, increasing efficiency and control of business services.

Digital business demands having fully integrated and automated operations across entire workflow process
As companies navigate their digital business transformations, they need to ensure seamless processes across both their multi-cloud and on-premises applications. File transfers are a critical part of the business process and must be managed as part of the business process.

Modern enterprise operations are dependent upon file transfers with different applications and systems, yet using multiple methods prevents companies from having fully integrated and automated operations. As file transfers continue to rise, companies need a solution that delivers enterprise-level automation to file transfers, provides a single point of control that lowers risks and remediation costs, and expedites issue resolutions that are critical for business continuity.

“There is an automation mandate underway as businesses grapple with the growing challenges brought about by digital transformation,” said Gur Steif, president, digital business automation at BMC. “Companies rely on file transfers to accelerate their internal, partner ecosystem and customer transactions across multi-cloud and on-premises applications, where speed, security, and audit reporting are absolute requirements. With the latest extension of our Control-M Managed File Transfer capabilities, our customers are realizing bottom-line benefits, including breaking down silos, reducing costs and errors, scaling the business faster, and improving file transfer transparency with graphical reporting and audit functions.”

“Managing heterogeneous data flows is one of the fundamental challenges for today’s IT administrators,” states James Kobielus, lead analyst for big data at Wikibon. “Enterprises increasingly need to work with data that is stored, managed, and processed in two or more internal and external environments. Traditionally, this has required separate tools for each of the various data movement pipelines, such as file transfers, database replications, distributed updates, and real-time streams. We expect that more organizations will seek greater efficiencies by converging these flows into unified backbones. This will allow those jobs to be automated around the clock from end to end without sacrificing security, visibility, and control.”

Control-M Managed File Transfer empowers IT professionals with the right solutions to support the challenges organizations face with diverse infrastructure, disparate data sources, and accelerated applications while on their digital transformation journey.

Simplify and automate file transfer management

With organizations managing an increasing number of business applications, it is critical to maintain status visibility to business service delivery and related file transfers. By combining traditional managed file transfer capabilities with application workflow automation in a single platform view across the entire enterprise, companies can streamline organizational silos resulting in fewer errors, faster problem remediation, and higher quality digital service delivery.   Businesses are no longer required to integrate multiple file transfer solutions or manually script or trace transfers across multiple solutions to resolve issues.

Today, with Control-M Managed File Transfer, BMC gives users control of file transfers with a dashboard that gives instant visibility into the status of internal and external file transfers with a unified view, enhanced security with encryption options, and reduced risk of downtime with automated monitoring and recovery features.

The Control-M Managed File Transfer solution helps customers visualize file transfer status, understand application workflow impact, and deliver mission critical business services dependent on file transfers. The solution allows customers to:

    • Integrate file transfers from a central automation platform
    • Proactively manage service level agreements with robust dashboards and analytics
    • Easily address compliance requests with comprehensive reporting tools
    • Safely transfer files in and out of cloud environments, internally and externally
