  • SmartBear Brings Cross-Browser Test Automation to the Masses

    SmartBear Announces New CrossBrowserTesting Record & Replay Feature to Empower Teams of All Skill Levels to Save Time and Money by Leveraging a Cloud-Based Device Lab for Test Automation

    SOMERVILLE, Mass. – April 11, 2018 – SmartBear, the leader in software quality tools for teams, today announced a new Record & Replay feature for CrossBrowserTesting, the only all-in-one testing platform that allows teams to run automated, visual, and manual tests on thousands of real desktop and mobile browsers in the cloud. The Record & Replay feature empowers teams of all skill levels to quickly and easily transition from manual to automated testing, saving time and money by leveraging a cloud-based device lab to test more browsers in less time.

    Given the massive fragmentation of end-user devices being used today, software teams need to make sure their web applications work flawlessly across any browser, operating system, or device resolution – but testing all these scenarios can introduce significant cost and time delays into the software delivery process. Additionally, as a result of the shift left trend, everyone is being asked to take part in the QA process today – but unlike most developers and QA Engineers who are comfortable with scripting and using frameworks such as Selenium, some testers, designers, and product managers lack the technical skills to create automated tests. With the new CrossBrowserTesting Record & Replay feature, all team members can automate their UI tests like an expert by recording and automating their manual tests, regardless of their level of technical skill, and instantly tap into the CrossBrowserTesting cloud-based device lab to make sure their software works flawlessly on any end-user device.

    Many organizations that participated in the beta for this new feature have already recognized the value. “The Record & Replay feature in CrossBrowserTesting is so intuitive—my team can get started with automation in seconds,” said Tom Newman, Test Manager, MacMillan Cancer Support. But the value of this new functionality doesn’t stop there. Newman continued, “In addition to its ease of use, I particularly appreciate the video of the test that is created, and that you can re-run the test across many browsers without the test breaking. The Record & Replay feature is very helpful for transitioning from manual testing to test automation.” Mateusz Piasta, QA Lead from Solidbrain, added that the new feature is “very easy to use and impressive that it succeeded with 90 percent of the script.”

    The Record & Replay feature in CrossBrowserTesting is the first step of continuous innovation on future capabilities for users who aren’t comfortable with complex scripting to transition into test automation. As Ryan Lloyd, VP of Products, Test and Development at SmartBear says, “After implementing the Record & Replay feature in CrossBrowserTesting, we have received tremendous feedback from our customers—having helped many begin their transition into automation. Looking forward, we are going to continue to invest in feature capabilities that will help our customers scale their automation efforts effectively.”

    As the leader in software quality tools for teams, SmartBear provides the most options for any user with any level of technical skill to leverage the benefits of test automation. SmartBear offers CrossBrowserTesting to run web tests against a cloud-based device lab using intuitive Record & Replay or by uploading Selenium scripts, TestComplete to test desktop, web, and mobile applications, and SoapUI Pro to test REST, SOAP, and other popular APIs and IoT protocols. SmartBear also provides TestLeft and TestServer to empower all dev-testers to create automated tests from within their IDE.

    The new Record & Replay feature is included in all CrossBrowserTesting automation plans. You can learn more about CrossBrowserTesting and the benefits of the new Record & Replay feature by joining their webinar on April 12: https://smartbear.com/resources/webinars/record-and-replay/

  • QASymphony Announces Quality Excellence Award Winners at Quality Jam 2018

    ATLANTA, April 11, 2018 – QASymphony, a leader in enterprise software testing, announce the winners of the QASymphony Quality Excellence Awards. The awards were presented at Quality Jam, QASymphony’s annual customer conference, to QA teams that have demonstrated excellence, efficiency, innovation and advocacy in software quality.

    “I would like to congratulate the winners of the 2018 QASymphony Quality Excellence Awards – they were selected from hundreds of candidates and represent the best of the best. Each of the winning enterprises were cross-functionally aligned around prioritizing software quality and they set a standard of excellence for other teams to emulate,” said QASymphony CEO Dave Keil.

    Winners were designated in the following three categories:

    The QA Champion Award recognizes a team who has excelled in championing the importance of QA and software quality across teams, throughout their organization or to the C-suite. This year’s QA Champion Award goes to two outstanding teams: The QA team at Office Depot and the QA team at Global Payments.

    The QA team at Office Depot has been a critical component of the retailer’s initiative to create an omni-channel shopping experience in stores and across devices. The QA team at Office Depot does a fantastic job promoting the importance of software quality to executive leadership. In turn, leadership has prioritized software quality and enabled QA to play a key role in the company’s digital transformation. To maintain a seamless customer experience, Office Depot needs to consistently push up-to-date product information across multiple digital platforms, from websites to web apps to point-of-sale systems, and ensure each one is bug-free and performing as expected. The company’s QA team developed a strategy to streamline testing across technologies, leveraging qTest as a unified platform for collaborating with developers, centrally managing test data, and analyzing application quality. The team leverages executive-level dashboards in qTest Insights to share key metrics with executives, which helps them continually optimize application quality and better engage with customers across digital channels.

    The QA team at Global Payments sets key goals that align with the business strategy in annual planning sessions. The team reports progress regularly to executive leadership across business organizations, up to the board level. Key metrics, including zero production defects, are tracked in qTest Insights. The Test Engineering and Quality Assurance teams are engaged at every step in the software delivery pipeline, from inception to design to delivery. The team continuously engages partners in the business to champion quality assurance principles and test engineering practices, and code isn’t deployed into production without QA acceptance and business signoff. To ensure that application delivery is a partnership, Global Payments has established a cross-functional QA Center of Excellence, which helps build trust and reinforce partnerships with development to continuously communicate, collaborate, coordinate and deliver great software that successfully processes and settles millions of payment transactions daily.

    The Collaboration Award recognizes a team who has excelled in ensuring developer-tester alignment, via workflow optimization, process and tool alignment, and a collaborative spirit. This year’s Collaboration Award goes to Sterling Talent Solutions.

    The QA team at Sterling Talent Solutions realized recently that their test management solution did not provide the necessary integration and visibility that was needed to support agile teams. They were hacking their existing QA toolset to make it fit within the new process and spending too much time communicating QA progress to other stakeholders. Recognizing an opportunity to streamline development and testing, QA leaders requested feedback from various stakeholders across the software development lifecycle to learn what they needed most. The answer was a tool with a robust integration with Jira and Confluence, so that developers and product owners could easily keep track of QA progress and receive notifications when it was time for them to step in. After implementing qTest, the team is more closely aligned – product owners have a clear view of what tests are being run, scrum masters are able to manage and report on defects, and leadership is able to see the quality of the application at a requirement level. In support of their continuous test integration, the team has developed a new test framework that leverages qTest APIs to integrate test management directly with their test automation. The team plans to incorporate qTest Pulse and qTest Launch into their strategy in the near future.

    The Innovation Award recognizes a team who has innovated the testing process at their organization by leveraging some of the latest techniques and tools. This year’s Innovation Award goes to the QA Research, Development and Support (RDS) team at Life Time, Inc.

    The QA RDS team at Life Time Inc. realized they needed an innovative solution for managing all types of tests after moving in a new direction with test automation. The Jira test management add-on they were using was no longer sufficient for keeping track of all types of tests (automated, manual, unit, etc.) each week, which the Life Time QA team was using. The team participated in QASymphony’s qTest Launch beta program and will now roll out the product to centrally manage automation across all of the team’s test machines.

  • Tufin Announces Security Automation for Containers and Microservices

    Tufin Orca to fulfill a critical need for cloud-based security for DevOps teams

    BOSTON – April 10, 2018 – Tufin®, the market-leading provider of Network Security Policy Orchestration solutions, today announced its latest product offering, Tufin Orca, a cloud-based solution that enables users to extend Tufin’s policy-based approach to secure containers and microservices. Tufin Orca is available through an early access program that is now open. The solution integrates with DevOps teams’ CI/CD tools to scan for threats, secure containers, and comply with regulations.

    “Containers and microservices in the DevOps workflow raise new challenges to managing risk and reducing vulnerability while meeting the speed of business,” said Jon Oltsik, senior principal analyst at ESG. “We see the need for organizations to add security into the DevOps toolchain and taking a policy-based approach to automating microservices security is a logical solution.”

    In order to secure the environment, DevOps teams want to know and control external access to vulnerable containers and limit the impact of a breach. Tufin Orca identifies and protects vulnerable containers that are externally accessible.

    “A typical Kubernetes cluster may have dozens, sometimes hundreds of instances, which are increasingly susceptible to cyberattacks. At scale it becomes impossible to identify vulnerabilities and protect against breaches without automation,” said Reuven Harrison, Chief Technology Officer at Tufin. “To achieve continuous security, DevOps teams can now integrate Tufin Orca with their CI/CD tools and Kubernetes runtime to protect microservices no matter where they’re deployed – on-premises, private or public cloud.”

    Current tools and practices lack sufficient visibility and security for modern microservice environments. At runtime Tufin Orca provides visibility into all microservice connections, monitors risk and takes policy-based action to shield applications.

    “As the leading provider of customer success solutions for the enterprise, Totango understands the importance of securing applications and protecting client data. We believe there is an increasing need for automated security solutions that intelligently adapt to changing cybersecurity threats,” said Oren Raboy, VP Engineering, Totango. “Tufin Orca’s policy-based approach to microservices security is a unique solution that will help DevOps build, deploy and operate secure applications at scale.”

    Tufin Orca is now available through the early-access program, which includes free access, unlimited use of Tufin Orca, and dedicated support. To sign up for the program, visit tufin.io.

    To see Tufin Orca in action and learn how to gain early access to the product, visit the Tufin booth #929 in South Hall at RSA Conference in San Francisco on April 16-20. We’ll also be at DevOps Connect on April 16.

  • Despite Major Vulnerability Disclosures Like WannaCry, New Research Finds that Open Source Components Fail to Receive Suitable Security Attention

    Study found less than 25 percent of developers test components for vulnerabilities at every release

    BURLINGTON, Mass. – April 10, 2018 – Veracode, Inc., a leader in securing the world’s software, acquired by CA Technologies (NASDAQ:CA), today released new data that shines a light on the discrepancy between component security and hygiene. According to the research conducted with Vanson Bourne, only 52 percent of developers using commercial or open source components in their applications update those components when a new security vulnerability is announced.  This highlights organizations’ lack of security awareness and puts organizations at risk of a breach.

    Software development processes like DevSecOps have helped improve the security of the code developers write. However, these same development processes value speed and efficiency to keep up with the demands of the application economy.  As a result, developers rely on components that borrow features and functionality from existing projects and libraries. The research shows that 83 percent of respondents use either or both commercial and open source components, with an average of 73 components being used per application.

    While components boost developers’ efficiency, and their use is considered a best practice, these components come with inherent security risks. Despite finding an average of 71 vulnerabilities per application introduced through the use of third-party components, only 23 percent of respondents reported testing for vulnerabilities in components at every release. This may be a result of only 71 percent of organizations reporting to having a formal application security (AppSec) program in place.

    What’s more, only 53 percent of organizations keep an inventory of all components in their applications. According to The State of Software Security Report 2017 (SOSS), fewer than 28 percent of companies conduct regular composition analysis to understand which components are built into their applications.

    “We know that developers care about creating great code, and that means creating secure code,” said Pete Chestna, director of developer engagement, CA Veracode. “In order to be successful, developers need to have clarity on the security policy and the tools to measure against it. When the goal is clear and we give developers access to those tools, they are able to integrate scanning earlier into the SDLC and make informed decisions that take security into consideration. Through this, we see a marked improvement in secure software development and the resulting outcomes.”

    This report shows that development (44 percent) or security (31 percent) teams are most likely to be responsible for the maintenance of third-party commercial and open source components, which suggests a move towards responsibility for the development team. As awareness around open source risk continues to grow, providing developers with the solutions, education and visibility to mitigate risk becomes a critical component to the Modern Software Factory approach to development that helps to build better, more secure, apps faster.

    Methodology
    CA Veracode commissioned Vanson Bourne to survey 400 application developers from the U.S. (200 respondents), UK (100 respondents), and Germany (100 respondents) to understand the maturity of organizations’ component security. Polling was conducted online in February of 2018.

  • Redgate drives up database coding standards with new release

    Cambridge UK, Tuesday, 10 April 2018 – In a move to help organizations establish, share and raise SQL coding standards, Redgate has released a new version of its popular SQL Prompt tool. The plug-in for SQL Server Management Studio and Visual Studio has been further developed to expand its code analysis capability, and help improve code quality.

    Originally created to help database developers write, format and refactor T-SQL code faster and easier with IntelliSense-style code completion, SQL Prompt has grown over the last decade into a comprehensive tool that increases code quality and reduces technical debt. The winner of the 2017 Visual Studio Magazine Reader’s Choice Award in the Productivity Tools category, it now includes code analysis, a range of styling options, and code snippets which can be shared to introduce standards and maintain consistency.

    Those features themselves have been introduced because the way databases are developed is changing. Application developers are increasingly also responsible for the database and, with organizations wanting to release more features faster, the database has to keep pace. This often results in teams of developers working on different branches or features of the same shared code base, which can result in inconsistencies and mistakes.

    As Natali Stoeva, Redgate Product Marketing Manager, explains: “Once you have more than one person working on database code, differences start to emerge. Some people may have their own personal styling preferences, for example, coding skills will vary, and new developers will be unfamiliar with the particular rules or syntax being used.”

    SQL Prompt smooths out those differences in three key ways.

    Firstly, team styles can be created, customized and shared so that the T-SQL code base has a consistent look and feel. Importantly, developers can use their own style while writing code and switch to the team style with a few keyboard clicks when sharing it.

    Secondly, code snippets can be created and customized for frequently used code. By sharing them among teams, the time writing SQL is reduced, the risk of syntax errors falls, and code is safer to execute, easier to understand, and faster to test.

    Thirdly, and perhaps most importantly, code quality standards can be maintained with close to 100 code analysis rules that run in the background. Potential code issues and hidden pitfalls are highlighted as soon as code is typed, and clear explanations and suggestions to improve the code are provided instantly. The list of rules can also now be managed and customized so that every member of the team is following the same rules all of the time.

    As a direct result, any team member can be trusted to change, add and write code easily to the same standard as more experienced colleagues, allowing changers to be committed and deployed faster, easier, and more safely.

  • New Research from Sumo Logic Reveals Widespread Demand for Disruptive Security Analytics Tools to Accelerate Modern Cloud Transitions

    Survey Finds 90 Percent of Security Professionals Feel Today’s On-premises Tools for the Cloud are Failing;

    Sumo Logic Showcases Advanced Cloud Security Analytics at RSA Including Threat Intelligence, Investigation Workflows, GDPR Readiness and DevSecOps Enablement

    REDWOOD CITY, Calif. — April 10, 2018 — Sumo Logic, the leading cloud-native, machine data analytics platform that delivers continuous intelligence for modern applications, today announced the findings of an independent global survey that found security professionals lack the necessary tools and processes needed to provide visibility in the cloud and to converge development, security and operations (DevSecOps) to better identify, investigate and prioritize security and compliance threats for modern applications in the cloud. These findings underscore the need for a new class of converged operations and security solutions integrating application insight within infrastructure defense empowering DevSecOps teams to move 10 times faster and do more with less resources.

    According to the 2018 Global Security Trends in the Cloud report, a research study conducted by Dimensional Research on behalf of Sumo Logic, 93 percent of respondents faced challenges when deploying their current on-premises security tools in the cloud and 97 percent lacked the tools, cross-functional collaboration and resources to gain proper insight into security across the organization.

    “The biggest challenge my team faced was the inability to easily consolidate security data, analytics and workflows in a single place, and because of that, we had major security blind spots across our global cloud infrastructure,” said Milinda Rambel Stone, senior director of global security, SPS Commerce. “With Sumo Logic, we now have full visibility into the threat landscape and that allows us to quickly prioritize and react to high-priority security incidents without any disruption to our business, and most importantly, to our customers. We are excited to have a partner like Sumo Logic that understands our modern cloud security needs, and look forward to their continued innovation as they bring a new converged security model to market.”

    Key findings include:

    Existing Security Tools Not a Fit for Cloud

    • 49 percent of respondents said existing tools aren’t effective in the cloud and that an overabundance of tools make it almost impossible to prioritize IT and security investments;
    • 45 percent said they couldn’t investigate threats in a timely matter because of poor integration capabilities.

    Security in the Cloud Requires an Organizational Shift

    • 82 percent said with a move to the cloud, it’s imperative to investigate threats at the application and infrastructure layers for complete visibility;
    • 63 percent reported broader technical expertise is required when trying to understand threats in the cloud;
    • 54 percent said greater cross-team coordination is necessary.

    Despite Current Limitations, Strong Appetite for Change

    • 64 percent of responding security professionals are looking for one single tool to consolidate other tool capabilities;
    • 57 percent would benefit from better collaboration between IT and security operations;
    • 53 percent want a tool to improve cross-team contextual workflows for threat resolution;

    “The bottom line is that organizations don’t have a handle on their data, and therefore, on their security,” said George Gerchow, CSO, Sumo Logic. “This creates a massive backlog of uninvestigated threats, and damage that could have been prevented if teams had better visibility across their infrastructure. Further compounding these challenges are new regulatory requirements like GDPR, that demand a flexible and scalable SaaS-based solution that traditional legacy SIEM and security tools built for on-premises don’t offer.”

    As a cloud-native, multi-tenant machine data analytics platform, Sumo Logic provides full support across all major cloud platforms — Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform (GCP) — to address unique customer needs, regardless of where they are in their cloud journey. In addition to traditional on-premise data from various technologies — firewall, endpoint, CASB and infrastructure — Sumo Logic’s holistic approach enables customers to more easily migrate to our cloud platform without any of the headache or archaic ways required in the past. A security by design approach has been a part of the Sumo Logic DNA over the past eight years and these latest cloud security analytics enhancements to the existing Sumo Logic platform further validate the company’s vision to provide a leading cloud security analytics solution that will fuel innovations for the new world of modern applications.

    “These findings are directly in line with customer adoption trends in our Modern Applications in the Cloud report and it indicates a clear cry for help from IT and security teams that are struggling to adapt their legacy tools like SIEM for modern IT infrastructure, and desperately need an entirely new security model built for the cloud,” said Gerchow. “The market has failed them, and the time is ripe for a leader to emerge because every dollar spent on outdated tools and solutions not only exacerbates these current security posture obstacles, but also negatively impacts business reputation and the customer experience. Born in AWS, Sumo Logic has always held a cloud-first approach and our vision is to create a leading cloud security analytics platform to help our customers overcome these challenges.”

    New Security Features and Functionality to be Previewed at RSA 2018

    Key features and capabilities will be previewed across the Sumo Logic platform at RSA Conference 2018 next week in San Francisco at Sumo Logic booth 4516 in the North Hall including:

    • Cloud Security Investigation Workflow – new workflow interface built around security analyst’s requirements for high-speed contextual investigation of security alerts across terabytes of log and event data. Currently in private beta, this investigation workflow across the full application stack and cloud infrastructure allows customers to resolve complex investigations in minutes, while accumulating learnings that can be applied to future investigations creating a positive feedback loop that can further accelerate investigation and improve security and operational posture.
    • Customizable GDPR & Privacy Dashboards – provides customers better visibility into personally identifiable information (PII) (GDPR Article 4) in order to understand the potential impact of this regulation on their organization, and develop a GDPR-specific strategy aligned with current security, compliance and privacy programs. The Sumo Logic security team is already leveraging these new privacy dashboards internally to find PII across all data sources and will be releasing these publicly to customers later this summer.
    • Enhanced Threat Intelligence Visibility – through integrations with CrowdStrike and AWS GuardDuty, Sumo Logic provides automated predictive analytics and deep insights for SecOps teams to help them more effectively manage and audit their entire modern application environment.

    Sumo Logic is the only cloud-native, multi-tenant, SaaS-based security analytics offering in the industry. Customers can correlate current, externally sourced threat intelligence with their Sumo Logic log data to increase the velocity and accuracy of detecting indicators of compromise (IOCs) across their entire infrastructure and ensuring the highest level of security and compliance posture.

    Survey Methodology and Demographics

    The 2018 Global Security Trends in the Cloud report, commissioned by Sumo Logic, was conducted in March 2018 and included a total of 316 qualified independent sources of IT security professionals across the U.S. and Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA). A range of questions were asked about cloud and on-premises security, including specific tools and organizational challenges, benefits and adoption patterns. All participants were responsible for IT security in environments in both public IaaS and on-premises infrastructure.

  • Micro Focus Named a Leader in IDC MarketScape: Worldwide Enterprise Automated Software Quality 2017-2018 Vendor Assessment

    Broad and deep portfolio of products for ASQ and DevOps drive position

    SUNNYVALE, CALIF. – April 9, 2018 – Micro Focus (LSE:MCRO; NYSE:MFGP) today announced that it has been named a leader in the IDC MarketScape: Worldwide Enterprise Automated Software Quality 2017-2018 Vendor Assessment – Driving Business Optimization via DevOps with Continuous Test and Integration (Doc #US41601117, December 2017). The report examines Automated Software Quality (ASQ) adoption trends and their influence on organizational success through the development of secure, high-quality software.

    In addition to being named a leader in the IDC MarketScape for Worldwide Enterprise Automated Software Quality, Micro Focus is also positioned as a leader in three related ASQ reports including the IDC MarketScape: Worldwide Cloud Testing and ASQ SaaS 2017-2018 Vendor Assessment (Doc #US41601017, February 2018), the IDC MarketScape: Worldwide Software Quality Analysis and Measurement 2017-2018 Vendor Assessment (Doc #US41601217, December 2017), and the IDC MarketScape: Mobile Testing and Digital Quality 2017-2018 Vendor Assessment (Doc #US40344615, February 2018).

    Speed matters, and to remain relevant as many business models are being disrupted, organizations need to accelerate the pace of innovation without compromising quality or security. This recognition is validation of Micro Focus’s portfolio in giving businesses a competitive edge to accelerate their application delivery and ensure quality at every stage of the application lifecycle – from the first backlog item to the user experience in production.

    In the report, IDC Research Director Melinda-Carol Ballou described the complexity that enterprises face and highlighted that “there is little leeway for poor software quality as companies deal with a volatile economic, business, and political climate that remains erratic, along with increasingly complex sourcing and deployments (from legacy to mobile to Internet of Things [IoT] platforms).”

    The IDC MarketScape underscored the following key strengths across Micro Focus’s Application Delivery Management portfolio in the report:

    • Formidable technical breadth and depth of its quality and application life-cycle management portfolio, complementary products with PPM, network virtualization and security, evolving requirements, and agile capabilities.
    • A user base, which Micro Focus can target with its modernizing product portfolio for ASQ, ALM, and agile with ALM Octane. A percentage of the established base of this broadly adopted platform remains well engaged and is looking to the organization’s new and evolving product sets to be able to move forward into agile DevOps and modern development.
    • Opportunities for the newly combined, software-focused company as heritage Micro Focus has synergistic (as well as some overlapping) automated tools for ALM and ASQ, such as the Silk products.

    “Organizations continue to struggle with the shift towards Agile and DevOps process frameworks, the integration of numerous lifecycle products and open source tools, and the complexity of managing a broad range of applications,“ said Raffi Margaliot, senior vice president and general manager, Application Delivery Management, Micro Focus. “Our leadership position underscores our commitment to deliver an end-to-end set of solutions that facilitate better integration across tools and teams, and deliver the necessary insights to make smarter, faster decisions that ultimately accelerate quality application delivery.”
