  • Protego Spearheads Launch of the OWASP Official Serverless Top 10 Project

Report to Educate Application Security Practitioners on Serverless Application Risks and Mitigation Techniques

Baltimore, Maryland – The Open Web Application Security Project (OWASP) released today the official OWASP Serverless Top 10 project initiated by Protego Labs. The project launch begins with a provisional report designed to be a first look into the leading risks in serverless security and to serve as a baseline for official OWASP Serverless Top 10.

The OWASP Top 10 is the de-facto guide for application security practitioners to understand the most common application attacks and risks. Its data spans vulnerabilities gathered from hundreds of organizations and over 100,000 real-world applications and APIs. The Top 10 items are selected and prioritized according to this data, in combination with consensus estimates of exploitability, detectability, and impact into providing The Ten Most Critical Web Application Security Risks.

“Since serverless applications are vastly different, security risks have changed,” said Tal Melamed, project leader. “With serverless, hackers must try different vectors and approaches for attacks; developers cannot employ traditional perimeter protections and need to change their way of thinking, as almost none of the mitigations suggested for traditional applications would fit in the serverless world, which is why we’re working on the OWASP serverless Top 10 project.”

Similar to the OWASP Top 10, the final Serverless Top 10 will be based on data collected from real industry input through an open call. The OWASP Serverless Top 10 is the first and only OWASP report that examines the main risks in serverless security. It also serves as a baseline for creating the official OWASP Serverless Top 10 security risks to educate organizations about the unique security landscape of serverless applications.

Protego is backed by a group of security industry investors, including Ron Gula of Gula Tech Adventures, Glilot Capital Partners, and former RSA CTO, Tim Belcher. Earlier this year, Protego won the Startup Competition for the most innovative cyber initiative at the Cybertech Tel Aviv 2018 Conference. Additionally, Protego is currently nominated for Best Cybersecurity Startup in the Cyber Excellence Awards, and was listed as a 2019 company to watch by SD Times.

     About Protego

  • Databricks Unified Analytics Platform Simplifies Distributed Deep Learning

Unified Analytics Leader Supports New Apache Spark 2.4; Introduces New Feature to Simplify Distributed Deep Learning

SAN FRANCISCO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Databricks, the leader in unified analytics and founded by the original creators of Apache Spark™, today announced support for the newly released Apache Spark 2.4.0 within Databricks’ Unified Analytics Platform. Databricks is the first unified analytics vendor to support Apache Spark 2.4. It is supported as part of Databricks Runtime 5.0, which is now generally available. Databricks also introduced a key feature, HorovodRunner, within Runtime 5.0 to further simplify distributed deep learning.

The Apache Spark community made multiple valuable contributions to the Spark 2.4 release which was introduced on November 8, 2018. In this release, Project Hydrogen substantially improves the performance and fault-recovery of distributed deep learning and machine learning frameworks on Spark. Project Hydrogen directly addresses the challenges data teams face because there is a significant difference between how big data jobs and deep learning jobs are executed. Whereas Spark excels at data processing at massive scale, deep learning assumes complete coordination and dependency among tasks which is optimized for constant communication rather than scalability and fault tolerance.

“Innovation continues to thrive within the Apache Spark community. Project Hydrogen is the most recent major initiative with an aim to provide first-class support for popular distributed machine learning frameworks on Apache Spark,” said Reynold Xin, co-founder at Databricks, Apache Spark PMC member and the top contributor to the project.

Within Apache Spark 2.4, Project Hydrogen introduces Barrier Execution, a new scheduling mode that allows practitioners to properly embed distributed deep learning training as an Apache Spark workload. Added Xin, “This is the largest change to Spark’s scheduler since the inception of the project. At Databricks, we also found additional opportunities to simplify the complexity of machine learning workloads. Within Databricks’ Unified Analytics Platform, which is powered by Spark 2.4, we created further optimizations to simplify distributed deep learning.”

Databricks Simplifies Distributed Deep Learning in Runtime 5.0

Model experimentation usually takes place on a single-node machine, locally or in the cloud, before scaling out computation as needed. Migrating from single-node workloads to distributed training on a CPU or GPU clusters can often times require a full code rewrite, increasing the complexity of moving to distributed training. To accelerate migration to distributed deep learning, Databricks just released HorovodRunner. The new feature provides a simple way to scale up deep learning training workloads from a single machine to large clusters, reducing overall programming and training time from hours to minutes.

To help simplify deep learning further, Databricks also provides native integration with the most popular frameworks including TensorFlow, Keras, and Horovod, as well as a performance edge with the most popular machine learning algorithms from MLlib and GraphFrames. This provides practitioners with a convenient way to get machine learning clusters started in seconds, pre-configured with the latest machine learning frameworks, libraries, and their dependencies.

  • Redis Introduces RedisGraph and Streams to Support a Zero Latency Future

Redis Enterprise Strengthens its Position as the Leading Database for the Instant Economy

Redis, the home of Redis and provider of Redis Enterprise, today announced at Redis Day London the latest release of Redis Enterprise with two key functionalities: RedisGraph and Streams. RedisGraph is a new module designed to solve complicated, practical graph problems in real-time. Streams is a new data structure that enables ingestion and analysis of huge volumes of unstructured data that are generated at extremely fast rates. Both of these functionalities support faster decision-making by businesses and are poised to accelerate the arrival of zero latency apps and services for their customers.

“There are numerous emerging environments that require zero latency to deliver on their promise—autonomous vehicles, facial recognition, smart homes, and many more,” said Manish Gupta, CMO at Redisf. “However a key piece holding these innovations back from mass consumer adoption is the speed at which the databases can process data. RedisGraph and Streams will help companies make their apps, devices, and systems deliver the instantaneous experiences consumers expect.”

Introducing the World’s Fastest Graph Database: RedisGraph

Built on GraphBLAS, an open-source library that employs linear algebra including matrix multiplication, RedisGraph can complete calculations up to 600 times faster than any alternate graph solution according to benchmark results.

RedisGraph’s key capabilities and use cases include:

    • The first application of GraphBLAS to focus on real-world problem-solving such as tracing contaminations or analyzing traffic flow, by performing calculations at an unprecedented speed.
    • Designed to make performing critical graph-based calculations easy and efficient, and to empower enterprises to make decisions to solve problems quickly.
    • Minimizes the need for specialized databases to address different use cases.
    • Eliminates the need for manual, step-by-step calculations and permits users to store values, search millions of graph nodes and edges, and perform multiple calculations simultaneously.
    • Sample use cases include tracing the source of contamination in a complex supply chain, tracking user behaviors to boost efficiency of recommendation engines or analyzing traffic flow on multiple roadways at once.

“RedisGraph is an extremely performant graph database,” said Daniel Howard, senior researcher at Bloor. “Thanks to the matrix representation it uses and the linear algebra algorithms it implements, it is able to create over one million nodes in under half a second, and form three million relationships in the same time frame. Early benchmarks performed by Redis suggest that their graph processing times are orders of magnitude faster than their competitors.”

“We’re looking forward to building upon our existing implementation of Redis Enterprise. We anticipate that RedisGraph will open up new possibilities in rapid detection, advanced warning, and exploration of malware data,” says Mark Patton, senior vice president of engineering at Malwarebytes. “We believe that RedisGraph will accelerate real-time insights into threat mitigation and overall security posture.”

“We’ve been using Redis for over a decade and it has been great to see the success our teams are achieving with it,” said Emre Sokullu, CEO and founder at Grou.PS. “With the simplicity and scale that RedisGraph is able to deliver with its multi-tenant architecture and the compactness of the data storage, we’ve been able to reduce our infrastructure footprint quite considerably. With support for the Cypher Query Language, the switch from our existing graph implementation in favor of RedisGraph was straightforward. Now, with the expected increase of the speed of our queries, we can get the insights we rely on faster than ever.”

A New Data Structure Supporting Fast Processing and Analysis: Streams

Streams is a new data structure that was introduced with open source Redis 5.0 and is now available in the latest version of Redis Enterprise. With the power of Streams, simple monitoring tools can be transformed to process and act upon data that is being generated in real time. For example, a baby monitor could go from streaming the live feed of a baby’s crib to analyzing the real-time status and health of the infant including sounding an alarm if the child’s breathing or heartbeat is irregular.

    Streams’ benefits and features include:

    • Processes data in real time that is being generated in huge volumes and at extremely fast rates.
    • Enables the creation of queues to share information among different applications and systems or to unify logs from different systems.
    • Sample use cases include real-time sentiment analysis of social media feeds, processing data from the environment and other surroundings to inform and guide the actions of autonomous vehicles, facial recognition technology, machine learning, evaluating real-time events to spot fraud or a cyber attack, and supporting better IoT and Smart Home devices.

As data preparation usage continues to grow, the platform’s functionality provides data engineers with even further assurance to scale and operationalize data prep workflows in order to keep pace with the demands of the business.”

The new features from Trifacta to further support data engineers and DataOps-focused organizations include:

    • RapidTarget: Allows data engineers to set a predefined schema target that provides automated guidance for how diverse data sources must be prepared and joined together in order to map to that target. Aligning the transformation process to an existing data model is critical when integrating unfamiliar or external data into an analysis. RapidTarget offers intelligent suggestions to accelerate how users prep and blend data sources in order to align their output to fit a desired data model.
    • Automator: Trifacta’s system to intelligently manage the scaling, scheduling and monitoring of data prep workflows in production. Users can set the schedule for flows to automatically run in production at a given time, when data updates or programmatically using APIs. Upon scheduling, users can define parameters or variables to customize what data is input into a workflow and how outputs are published.  Finally, they can monitor the status and performance of jobs, and set alerts when input data changes or anomalies occur.
    • Deployment Manager: Provides a framework for testing, versioning and managing data preparation workflows as they transition into enterprise-wide data pipelines. Before a new workflow can bring value to the broader organization, the flow must be tested at scale. With Trifacta’s Deployment Manager, data engineers can seamlessly test new workflows across development, testing and staging environments prior to being transitioned into production pipelines. The framework also allows data engineers to manage the versioning of flows and even rollback to prior versions of flows if needed.

According to a recent Gartner report, “Providing the right data to the right people at the right time is a constant challenge. Data engineers are emerging as a crucial role in addressing this challenge. Data and analytics leaders must therefore develop a data engineering discipline as part of their data management strategy.”*
