  • Alcide Report Finds 75% Will Increase the Number of Cloud Security Tools They Rely On Over the Next 12 Months

As Hybrid Cloud and Serverless Continue to Gain Ground, Organizations Rush to Keep Up; Fewer than Half Have Dedicated Cloud Security Teams

Tel Aviv – November 6, 2018 – Alcide, provider of the most comprehensive full-stack cloud-native security platform, today released the findings of a new industry report: 2018 Report: The State of Securing Cloud Workload based on responses from close to 350 security, DevOps and IT leaders. The report reveals that as more organizations embrace hybrid cloud – with more than 50 percent claiming a hybrid cloud setup – and serverless, now used by close to third of organizations, they lack the tools and specialization to keep up. 75 percent of respondents expect to see an increase in the number of security tools they rely on in the next year, while over half share they still manually configure security policies. The resulting complexity has the potential to slow critical business functions in the absence of an integrated security approach to distributed cloud environments.

According to a recent report from 451 Research:

The pace of innovation on cloud-native environments places significant burden on traditional security practices. Not only is there a need to support new technology options – quickly moving from traditional virtual machines to containers, serverless, and newer constructs such as service mesh – but there is also a difference in how security and DevOps teams consider their needs and workflows.

Alcide’s report, conducted in August 2018 in conjunction with Informa Engage, reinforces the idea that new practices and technologies are disrupting traditional security practices, with findings including:

Cloud complexity increasing, with hybrid cloud as the new infrastructure normal:

    • While virtual machines (VMs) remain the most common cloud computing environment (83%), containers (37%), serverless (28%), and service mesh (21%) are gaining traction.
    • Hybrid and multi-cloud approaches now make up more than three-quarters of all configurations (77%).

Serverless running in production; most bullish about its security

    • Despite some security concerns, the majority (57%) of serverless users are currently running it in both production and development.
    • The majority currently using serverless have a high degree of confidence in its security, while one third (32%) express a lack of confidence in the security of their environments.

As cloud infrastructure complexity grows, security becomes a shared responsibility with DevOps

    • Fewer than half of organizations (45%) now have a dedicated security team responsible for the cloud, with 35% of all organizations now using either a DevOps team or dedicated DevSecOps team for security.

Hybrid cloud complexity pushes Dev, Sec and Ops teams to look for more tools to secure their distributed environments

    • Over two-thirds (75%) expect to increase the number of tools in use over the next twelve months – with no one expecting to retire any tools in use
    • One-third of organizations reporting using more than five tools for cloud security

Proliferation of cloud security tools leave the enterprise vulnerable, point to need for intelligent policy automation

    • More than half (60%) of organizations rely on manual configurations of security policies for their apps, while almost all organizations (90%) rely on multiple individuals to configure and set policy rules.

“Our report validates what we’ve seen with our own customers – modern organizations are striving for a consolidated security approach that will support business velocity and tackle the challenges associated with the overhead of multiple tools in use,” said Karine Regev, VP Marketing of Alcide. “Modern teams can’t assume that emerging technologies like serverless are secure, and need a practical and uniform enforcement and management of security policies to control disparate and cloud-native services, infrastructure and environments.”

Access the full report here for additional insight.

  • Banks’ Ability to Maximize Their Use of New Digital Technologies May Be Hindered by Slow Transition to the Cloud, New Research from Accenture Shows

NEW YORK; Nov. 5, 2018 – Although the majority of banks recognize the advantages of building new information technology (IT) systems on cloud platforms, many have been slow to transition to the cloud, and only one in four has a solid strategy for cloud adoption, according to a new report from Accenture (NYSE: ACN).

The report — titled “Cloud and Clear, Accenture Cloud Readiness Report – Banking” and based on a global survey of banking executives — finds that cloud adoption is integral to enabling banks to quickly add new online services, develop applications and improve customer experience. The top benefits that surveyed bankers expect from cloud adoption are the ability to scale their IT operations up — and down — as needed (cited by 77 percent) and the ability to launch applications faster (63 percent); only 49 percent cited cost savings as a top benefit.

However, more than two-fifths (43 percent) of the bank executives surveyed said their banks lack a strategy for cloud adoption or have only started to implement basic cloud practices, and only 26 percent have what Accenture considers a solid cloud-adoption strategy, which includes ongoing measurement of efficiencies for continuous improvement.

“To drive growth, banks must provide customers with a stellar digital experience, and cloud is a core component to accomplishing this,” said Andrew Poppleton, head of the technology advisory practice within Accenture’s Financial Services operating group. “Cloud provides the capacity and agility that banks need to use big data and analytics to identify the best products and services for their customers and to quickly develop and get them to market, which is crucial to keeping pace with competitors in this digital age.”

According to the report, banks’ initial focus on the cloud has traditionally centered around infrastructure-related functions. The survey found that the two most-common functions that banks have moved, or are in the process of moving, to the cloud are disaster recovery (cited by 80 percent of respondents) and data backup (74 percent). Banks have also made progress in identifying which legacy applications are good candidates for early migration to the cloud, with the top three being retail customer access channels, such as email, mobile, internet and ATM (cited by 65 percent of respondents); foreign exchange (60 percent); and regulatory reporting (40 percent).

However, the report identifies two impediments to banks’ wide-spread cloud implementation:

    • Existing legacy IT infrastructure. Nearly all bank executives surveyed said they expect that transitioning to the cloud will require new IT operating models. In fact, more than two-thirds (69 percent) intend to operate in a “bimodal” way — maintaining key legacy systems and those not easily replicated on cloud platforms, while transferring other systems and adding new applications in the cloud.
    • A skills gap. Although nearly nine out of 10 bankers (89 percent) surveyed rated the skills and experience of their employees in charge of cloud strategy and management as “mature” or “advanced,” they were less confident about their teams’ ability to manage cloud infrastructure and applications. Specifically, more than half (55 percent) rated their team’s skill level as “novice” or having “no experience” in managing cloud infrastructure, and 40 percent gave the same skill rating for managing cloud applications.

“The cloud provides extraordinary opportunities for banks to transform how they conceptualize, develop, manage and sell their products and services — but this can’t be accomplished without the right talent in place to advance the cloud agenda,” said Chad Duncan, a managing director in Accenture’s Financial Services technology advisory practice. “At the same time, our research shows that many banks still lack a comprehensive strategy to rapidly shift to the cloud, leading to limited deployment. Because cloud is fundamental to how banks will conduct business and grow in the future, it’s time to move past the experimental phase and put an aggressive cloud transition strategy in place.”

    Methodology
Accenture Research surveyed 35 banking executives responsible for technology and information security at global retail banks in North America, South America, Europe, Africa and Asia Pacific. The survey was conducted during November and December 2017.

With approximately 20 TB of anonymous metadata incorporated into the solutions’ intelligence, this pervasive knowledge is included in every aspect of the Boomi platform to help users be more productive. With the mindset of shared success, it shows users how to optimally configure Boomi for specific needs, based on feedback and insights from the community.
    • Simplified Collaboration – Given the importance of team work, Boomi’s new UX is designed to support real time collaboration across users and teams, with requisite controls and tracking.
    • Blockchain Integration – Boomi’s world class, unified platform offers support for industry-leading blockchain platforms Ethereum and Hyperledger Fabric so customers will be ready to quickly and easily incorporate blockchain smart contracts into their business processes. During this time of the blockchain evolution, Boomi will be actively contributing to blockchain standards, and participating in various industry consortiums in order to influence the integration requirements customers will need to adopt blockchain.

“iPaaS is no longer just about integration, it is about pervasive connectivity and business transformation. If a business simply emphasizes the ability to integrate, then it is only focusing on a piece of the puzzle,” said Steve Wood, Chief Product Officer at Dell Boomi. “Boomi offers an iPaaS platform that delivers transformation by connecting people as well as data. The iPaaS of today will not be the iPaaS of tomorrow and it is Boomi’s vision to redefine the market in order to provide the best integration cloud technology to our customers and partners.”

  • ScyllaDB Announces Major Release of Its NoSQL Database and Support for Concurrent OLTP and OLAP

Scylla Open Source 3.0 Brings Production-Ready Materialized Views, Secondary Indexes, Cassandra 3.0 Compatibility and More

PALO ALTO, Calif., Nov. 6, 2018 — ScyllaDB, the real-time big data database company, kicked off its two-day Scylla Summit by announcing a major release of its database, Scylla Open Source 3.0. The company also previewed Scylla support for concurrent OLTP and OLAP, an industry first that enables simultaneous transactional and analytical processing. This release marks a significant milestone, as the company surpasses feature parity with Apache Cassandra, the popular open source NoSQL database. As a drop-in replacement for Apache Cassandra with as much as 10 times better performance, Scylla Open Source has added production-ready capabilities much anticipated by the NoSQL community, while introducing ground-breaking new features that improve utilization and minimize operational overhead.

Scylla Open Source 3.0 features a close-to-the-hardware design that makes optimal use of modern servers. Written from the ground-up in C++ to provide significant improvements to throughput, latency and administration, Scylla delivers scale-up performance of more than 1,000,000 IOPS per node, scales out to hundreds of nodes, and consistently achieves a 99% tail latency of less than 1 millisecond.

    New Scylla Capabilities Announced Today
    • Concurrent OLTP and OLAP: Scylla will enable its users to safely balance real-time operational workloads with big-data analytical workloads within a single database cluster. Online Transaction Processing (OLTP) and Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) have very different data access characteristics. OLTP involves many small and varied transactions, including mixed writes, updates, and reads, with a high sensitivity to latency. In contrast, OLAP emphasizes the throughput of broad scans across datasets. By introducing capabilities that isolate workloads, Scylla will uniquely support simultaneous OLTP and OLAP workloads without sacrificing latency or throughput.
    • Materialized Views: Production-ready release of a long-awaited experimental feature designed to enable automated server-side table denormalization. Notably, the Apache Cassandra community reverted this feature from production-ready to experimental mode in 2017.
    • Secondary Indexes: Production-ready with its 3.0 release, Scylla’s global secondary indexes can scale to any cluster size, unlike the counter local-indexing approach adopted by Apache Cassandra. Secondary indexes allow querying data through non-primary key columns.
    • Cassandra 3.x File Format Compatibility: Scylla Open Source 3.0 includes Apache Cassandra 3.x compatible storage format (SSTable), improving performance and reducing storage volume by as much as 3x.
Speaking at Scylla Summit 2018, CEO and co-founder of ScyllaDB, Dor Laor said,
“Scylla 3 represents a huge leap forward in functionality and scalability. We finally reached parity with Apache Cassandra, and developed a ground-breaking OLTP+OLAP service level agreement guarantee that puts us on a path towards pure multi-tenancy and positions us favorably against Amazon DynamoDB, Microsoft’s Cosmos DB among others.”
    AVAILABILITY
Scylla Open Source 3.0 will be available in November 2018, with concurrent OLTP and OLAP support available shortly after. Existing users are encouraged to upgrade to the new version in order to take full advantage of performance gains and new capabilities.

  • DH2i Launches DxOdyssey for Zero Trust Hybrid/Multi-Cloud Security

DH2i’s DxOdyssey Set to Disrupt the Multi-Billion Dollar Cloud VPN Market

DH2i to Demonstrate New DxOdyssey Software at PASS Summit 2018

FORT COLLINS, Co. – November 6, 2018 – DH2i®, the leading provider of multi-platform Software Defined Perimeter and Smart Availability™ software for Windows and Linux, today announced the launch of DxOdyssey™, its new network security software that dynamically deploys perimeter security where needed in order to isolate services for fine-grained user access, creating a Software-Defined Perimeter (SDP). The new DH2i SDP offering gives medium and large organizations the perimeter security model needed for Zero Trust network connectivity between on-premises sites and/or multi-cloud environments. In addition, the new offering addresses customer desire for a highly scalable, self-healing networking solution that is easy to configure and manage, with a high ROI. DxOdyssey makes the application infrastructure “always-secure and always-on”.

Today’s medium and large organization security and network admins are well-aware of the difficulties that surround using traditional approaches such as virtual private networks (VPNs) for perimeter security to connect on-premises sites and/or multi-cloud environments. The issues include:

    –        Complex configuration requiring dedicated routers, ACLs and FW policies increasing risk

    –        Users get a “slice of the network,” creating a lateral network attack surface

    –        Inbound connections create attack surfaces (e.g. DDoS)

    –        No ability to reduce attack surfaces with application-level segmentation

DxOdyssey cross-platform SDP software overcomes these issues without the use and security risks of conventional networking connectivity approaches. DxOdyssey SDP software delivers:

    –        Micro-Perimeters – Application-level micro-tunnels give network admins the ability to deep segment by application, not by network. Limits remote users to fine-grained access to specific services. No ACLs or FW policies to manage. Eliminates lateral network attacks.

    –        Discreet Invisibility – Randomly generated non-standard UDP ports for dynamic on-demand micro-tunnel communications.Servers are cloaked and secured with no open ports. Virtually eliminates network attack surfaces.

    –        Multi-Cloud Secure – Designed to enable secure communications “from any host, to any host, anywhere” with application-level DTLS encrypted micro tunnels and Public Key Authentication. Scales across environments to build a secure hybrid/multi-cloud distributed application infrastructure. No cloud vendor lock-in.

    –        Smart Availability – Dynamic movement of micro-tunnel gateways and application workloads with self-healing automatic fault detection and failover. The perimeter can be orchestrated to change dynamically so that micro-tunnels and workloads always find their best execution venue (BEV). The entire application infrastructure is “always-secure and always-on.”

    –        Lightweight software – Software-Defined-Perimeter solution. Just install on any host and connect.Integrates into existing network infrastructure. No network reconfiguration. No appliances to deploy, configure or maintain.

“A ‘zero-trust’ methodology assumes that assets, users and resources are untrusted.  To achieve a zero-trust architecture takes an extremely focused and dedicated effort, but can strengthen most organizations’ risk posture,” said Eric Hanselman, Chief Analyst, 451 Research. “IT professionals seeking to secure today’s more complex hybrid and multi-cloud environments and build highly available, application-aware capabilities should consider offerings such as DH2i’s DxOdyssey to move beyond the complexity and limitations of traditional VPNs.”

“Traditional perimeter security solutions are obsolete for the new IT reality of hybrid and multi-cloud. They weren’t designed for them. They create too large of an attack surface. One need only open today’s paper to confirm this fact. Customers need a new perimeter security model to support hybrid and multicloud computing,” said Don Boxley, CEO and Co-Founder, DH2i.”DH2i’s SDP solution, DxOdyssey, is purpose-built for this new perimeter security reality and is going to disrupt the multi-billion cloud VPN market* because it enables organizations to move away from using a traditional VPN and all of the associated issues for perimeter security. Instead, with DxOdyssey customers can build lightweight dynamic security perimeters to secure application- and workload-centric connections between on-premises and/or multi-cloud environments, with virtually no attack surface.”

According to 451 Research’s Voice of the Enterprise: Cloud Hosting and Managed Services, Budgets and Outlook, 2017 survey of 644 enterprise IT decision-makers, 58% of organizations are pursuing a hybrid strategy involving integrated on-premises systems and off-premises cloud/hosted resources.**

DH2i will offer live demonstrations of its new DxOdyssey networking security software, as well as its DxEnterprise multi-platform Smart Availability software for Windows Server and Linux Server databases and stateful Docker containers, at this week’s PASS Summit, Booth # 401 (November 6-9, Seattle, WA).

  • Denim Group Awarded Hybrid Analysis Mapping Patents by U.S. Patent and Trademark Office

Issued Patents Will Drive Innovation in Managing Large Volumes of Data Generated by Application Security Testing Programs

San Antonio, TX – October 30, 2018 – – Denim Group, the leading independent application security firm, today announced that the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has awarded the company two patents which will provide a method of correlating and merging static application security testing (SAST) and dynamic application security testing (DAST) for web and mobile applications. The official name of the Hybrid Analysis Mapping (HAM) patents are as follows: Method of Correlating Static and Dynamic Application Security Testing Results for a Web Application (Patent #10,043,012) and Method of Correlating Static and Dynamic Application Security Testing Results for a Web and Mobile Application (Patent #10,043,004).

The continued proliferation of websites, web applications, and mobile applications that handle sensitive data makes securing an organization’s application portfolio a major challenge. Effective application security programs utilize multiple types of analysis to test applications for security vulnerabilities, resulting in a high volume of data produced. This increased data can be valuable when it provides deeper insight into vulnerabilities; however, it can also make the problem of identifying areas of concern harder to manage by requiring further manual reviews by the analyst or highlighting large numbers of vulnerabilities and weaknesses that are of low value or priority. Without positive correlation of large data sets, the value of vulnerability data sets is diminished.

Denim Group has implemented the technology from these two Hybrid Analysis Mapping patents into their vulnerability resolution management platform, ThreadFix, in order to help organizations efficiently manage the large volume of data that is generated by an organization’s application security testing program. This technology makes ThreadFix the first platform able to correlate SAST and DAST results without requiring a runtime agent. As a result, organizations report a 71% success rate in matching SAST and DAST results and an average reduction of 15-35% in overall findings. ThreadFix improves the ability of the application development team to identify vulnerabilities found by both testing tools and prioritize them in order of degree to be addressed.

“We are honored to be awarded these two patents by the USPTO to help organizations more effectively manage their application security testing data,” said CTO of Denim Group, Dan Cornell. “By enabling organizations to more accurately correlate the results of static scans with dynamic scans and manage the data that is generated by their testing program more efficiently, we are delivering a significant breakthrough for today’s industry professionals in the application security space.”
