  • Redis Delivers the Fastest Multi-Model Database on Intel® Optane™ DC Persistent Memory

Redis Enterprise Provides Developer Flexibility to Process Massive Data Sets Quickly and Affordably

Mountain View, Calif., January 10, 2019—Redis, the home of Redis and provider of Redis Enterprise, announced today that Redis Enterprise is now available for Intel® Optane™ DC persistent memory across multiple cloud services or as downloadable software for supported hardware from companies participating in Intel’s hardware beta program.

Redis Enterprise gives developers the flexibility to choose between the two modes of operation offered by Intel Optane DC persistent memory. Using Memory Mode, Redis Enterprise-powered applications can achieve comparable performance to DRAM with significant cost benefits. Developers can achieve even greater cost savings using AppDirect mode with Redis Enterprise, while still delivering significantly faster performance compared to NVMe.

The combination of Redis Enterprise and Intel Optane DC persistent memory enables customers to scale to multi-terabytes of data at a much more attractive price point than alternate solutions. Redis Enterprise’s multi-model capabilities which encompass core data-structures (including the new Redis Streams) and modules (ReJSON, RedisGraph, and RediSearch) all perform at a sub-millisecond response time for any operation with persistent memory. Additionally, Redis Enterprise can be deployed in an active-active (CRDT-based) manner across geo-regions, while keeping a similar cost structure of much slower databases.

“We’ve worked closely with Intel’s engineering teams to address real-world challenges we see across more than 750,000 Redis Enterprise databases under our management,” said Yiftach Shoolman, co-founder and CTO at Redis. “Traditionally, Redis users have split their dataset across multiple databases to avoid the relatively high deployment cost associated with high memory (DRAM) capacity servers. Redis Enterprise in combination with Intel Optane DC persistent memory allows developers to simplify their database deployment by keeping the entire dataset in a single multi-model database—Redis—and keep the cost structure similar to disk-based databases, while enjoying sub-millisecond response time at any scale for simple and complex use cases.”

“Intel and Redis have collaborated in the development of next-generation memory technologies beginning with NVMe to persistent memory today,” said Alper Ilkbahar, Vice President and General Manager, Datacenter Memory and Storage Solutions at Intel. “With their deep technical knowledge of customers’ high-performance data tier architecture, Redis has optimized Redis Enterprise to leverage the benefits of Intel Optane DC persistent memory to meet the needs of our customers.”

  • IBM Earns Record 9,100 Patents in 2018, Tops U.S. Patent List

IBM’s inventions include use of AI to help people converse, protect the earth’s lakes and combat voice phishing

ARMONK, N.Y. – 8 Jan 2019: IBM (NYSE: IBM) inventors received a record 9,100 patents in 2018, marking the company’s 26th consecutive year of U.S. patent leadership. IBM led the industry in the number of artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing, security and quantum computing-related patent grants.

“IBM is committed to leading the way on the technologies that change the way the world works – and solving problems many people have not even thought of yet,” said Ginni Rometty, IBM chairman, president and CEO. “Our clients and their customers are the beneficiaries of these innovations, particularly our leadership in AI, cloud, blockchain and security for business.”

Overall, nearly half of the 2018 patents relate to pioneering advancements in AI, cloud computing, security, blockchain and quantum computing.

The industry-leading 1,600 AI patents IBM inventors were granted in 2018 include new ways to use AI to help us converse and protect the earth’s lakes and waterways. AI also played a large role in the more than 1,400 security patents IBM inventors were granted in 2018, including an AI-powered security approach to combat voice phishing.

Some IBM patents granted in 2018 include:

    • Project Debater is a first-of-a-kind AI system from IBM Research that can debate humans on complex topics. IBM inventors patented an approach to use machine learning to identify evidence, such as relevant text segments in unstructured text data, which supports or opposes a claim or topic under consideration. This could help provide advancements in how machines and humans interact in conversation.
    • IBM inventors patented an intelligent system that could be used to identify, characterize, and monitor vertical temperature profiles and gradients, which affect marine life, in lakes and other aquatic ecosystems. Analytics combined with the IBM Cloud and Internet of Things (IoT) mapping has helped IBM along with collaborators to engineer the world’s smartest lake, Lake George.
    • “Phishing” occurs when a person or computer system tries to obtain sensitive information from unknowing victims. Most recently, phishers have turned to voice phishing, or “vishing,” in which unsuspecting victims are called directly and “vishers” use a voice over IP (VoIP) system to mask their identity. IBM has patented an AI system that could, with permission from the primary user, analyze conversation patterns between two parties in order to identify attempts by one of the parties to deceive the other. The system could send an alert message in real-time to warn a potential vishing victim and help company IT experts better prevent and manage computer and mobile security threats.

IBM inventors received more than 2,000 cloud computing patents in 2018, including a patent on a specialized monitor for unikernel-based virtual machines that takes a lightweight approach to improving isolation and security between a cloud application and its host, while also reducing provisioning times and improving performance. The approach is related to IBM’s research in container security and could enable organizations to more easily move data and applications securely across cloud and on- premises environments.

IBM inventors also continue to break ground in the development of blockchain and its rapid pace of global adoption. IBM was granted a patent on an approach for encrypting data stored in a blockchain. Members of a blockchain network can put data on a blockchain that they would like to share with other blockchain network members.

However, instead of storing the data openly for any of the blockchain participants to see, members can encrypt their data within the blockchain and only those that have been given a decryption key can read the data. IBM has enabled this patented capability to users of the open source Hyperledger Fabric.

IBM researchers also patented significant inventions in quantum computing, including a new way of miniaturizing components to improve the performance of quantum computers.
The new patents were granted to a diverse group of more than 8,500 IBM inventors in 47 different U.S. states and 48 countries.

  • Aerospike Delivers the First Commercially Available Open Database Optimized for Intel® OptaneTM DC Persistent Memory

New Aerospike 4.5 release gives enterprises unmatched scale, performance and consistency

Mountain View, Calif., Dec. 13, 2018 – Aerospike Inc., the developer of the world’s most trusted and reliable enterprise-grade non-relational database, today announced general availability of Aerospike Enterprise Edition 4.5 optimized for Intel® OptaneTM DC persistent memory.

Aerospike Enterprise Edition 4.5 is the first commercially available open database, supporting both traditional DRAM memory and new Intel Optane DC persistent memory, a new class of memory and storage technology architected specifically for data-intensive applications that require extremely low-latency, high durability and strong data consistency.

Aerospike’s open database architecture means that it natively supports a wide variety of enterprise application environments, supporting Java, .NET, Node.js, Python, Go and other commonly used programming languages. Intel Optane DC persistent memory is currently available in beta from multiple cloud service providers and hardware vendors, giving companies the flexibility to run the Aerospike database in the cloud, on premises or both.

“Aerospike powers high-scale, real-time machine learning-based applications at many of the world’s industry leading enterprises today,” said John Dillon, CEO of Aerospike. “Adding support for Intel Optane DC persistent memory into our existing storage hierarchy gives our customers greater flexibility to develop and deliver mission-critical, strategic operational applications at the edge, on premises or in the cloud.”

Intel’s groundbreaking persistent memory technology provides better total cost of ownership, capacity, native persistence, and a higher level of performance at commensurate levels of scale. Aerospike worked with Intel to architect and validate its database performance on this new memory tier.
The combination of persistence with highly parallel access to other tiers of storage becomes an architectural breakthrough for both high performance and scale. For example, for planned restarts of a NoSQL in-memory database using Aerospike Hybrid Memory Architecture, Intel Optane DC persistent memory provides a minutes-to-seconds restart speedup compared to DRAM-only cold restart.

“Intel Optane DC persistent memory is a groundbreaking technology that helps customers deliver mission-critical, data-intensive applications at scale,” said Alper Ilkbahar, vice president and general manager of the non-volatile Memory and Storage Solutions Group at Intel. “Aerospike 4.5 is an important milestone as the industry readies for general availability of Intel’s new persistent memory technology.” Aerospike demonstrated this groundbreaking technology earlier this year, showcasing performance that meets and sometimes exceeds expectations of DRAM-only databases.

Aerospike’s patented hybrid memory database implements specific optimizations for both highly parallel DRAM and high-density NAND. Extending Aerospike support for persistent memory enables enterprises to reap additional benefits for a wide variety of machine learning-based applications where traditional in-memory database technology alone does not provide needed performance and scale.

“Adding support for Intel Optane DC persistent memory is a natural evolution of our product strategy to optimize Aerospike for multiple storage tiers,” said Brian Bulkowski, co-founder and CTO of Aerospike. “Extending the class of device tiers that Aerospike supports gives enterprises unmatched flexibility on how best to architect their data infrastructure for mission- critical applications that at a rack level and beyond may need to scale to hundreds of terabyte or more.”

Intel Optane DC persistent memory’s significant density improvement (up to 512 GB per module) compared to DRAM (currently limited to 128 GB per DIMM) combined with Aerospike’s hybrid memory’s density advantage of 10x compared to traditional NoSQL databases can deliver a massive combined scale improvement with negligible performance impact. release of Aerospike Enterprise Edition 4.5 follows the recent 4.3 product release which extended Aerospike’s support for In-Memory and Hybrid Memory with all-Flash-based storage, enabling enterprises to support petabyte-scale database implementations.

Aerospike Enterprise Edition 4.5 is generally available now.

  • Datadog and Aqua Security Partner to Provide Seamless Visibility into Container-Based Application Security

Aqua integrates with Datadog to give DevOps teams real-time security metrics and events

Seattle, WA –December 11, 2018 – KubeCon/CloudNativeCon – Aqua Security, the leading platform provider for securing container-based and cloud native applications, today announced
the integration of its platform with Datadog’s cloud monitoring and analytics platform. With this integration, Aqua provides real-time visibility into the security posture of cloud native applications to Datadog users, including information on vulnerable images, untrusted running containers, and security anomalies found by Aqua in the runtime environment.

For DevOps teams that continuously monitor applications for operational parameters such as performance, bug tracking, and errors, security events are often a blind spot that is handled
elsewhere although they may directly affect application uptime and resiliency. The integration of Aqua’s granular security information into Datadog’s comprehensive monitoring makes it possible to identify issues quickly and analyze their impact on application availability.
As organizations shift to more dynamic infrastructure through cloud and container technologies, communication between application and security teams is more important than ever,” said Ilan Rabinovitch, VP Product and Community at Datadog. “By combining Datadog’s deep insights into containerized application performance with Aqua Security’s enforcement of
security best practices, we are helping organizations bridge the gap between these traditionally siloed teams.

The integration between Datadog and Aqua CSP features pre-built Datadog dashboards that display:
    – Container images currently in Aqua’s scan queue
    – Known vulnerabilities and security issues found in existing images
    – Containers running from unauthorized images
    – Aqua runtime policy violations and audit events

Additionally, Datadog users can use the data provided in the Aqua dashboards to set up theirown alerts, aggregate data streams from different applications, and customize how data is
    displayed.
“We are excited to be partnering with Datadog to deliver a more complete security view to DevOps teams,” said Amir Jerbi, CTO and co-founder of Aqua Security. “In the cloud native era, ensuring security can no longer the exclusive burden of security teams, and instead should be part of the overall operational soundness of applications throughout their lifecycle. Our integration with Datadog creates a valuable shortcut that allows security issues to be detected early and fixed quickly, preventing escalated security incidents in production.”

  • Instana Extends Leading Kubernetes Monitoring Solution to Better Serve Developer Community

Company’s Latest Release Provides Quickest and Easiest Developer Visibility of Kubernetes Application and System Performance

Seattle at KubeCon – December 11, 2018 – Instana, the first APM solution provider to monitor kubernetes at the application layer, today announced further enhancements to the company’s automatic application monitoring solution for containerized applications. The new capabilities center around Instana’s Application Perspectives, a unique way to group and analyze all performance metrics and traces from specific application components.

“While Kubernetes-based orchestration allows DevOps to keep applications operating properly most of the time, it’s quite challenging to understand what is happening,” said Pete Abrams, Instana co-founder and COO. “To help developers quickly and easily understand how their application code is behaving within a Kubernetes environment, Instana has connected Kubernetes and Kubernetes Service monitoring directly to application performance metrics and traces. This happens completely automatically.”

Instana continues to make headlines at KubeCon conferences. Last December, in conjunction with KubeCon in Austin, Instana announced the expansion of their automatic application monitoring solution to include any applications running in Kubernetes or on Kubernetes services such as Oracle OKE and Google GKE. In May, at KubeCon in Copenhagen, the company announced the ability to correlate application performance metrics and traces with Kubernetes system metrics – becoming the first solution to monitoring Kubernetes, itself, from an application perspective.

Instana’s Application Perspectives changes the way in which IT organizations, especially development teams, use APM solutions for monitoring and troubleshooting their distributed microservice applications. Using operational tags or allowing real-time ad hoc definitions, Instana’s Application Perspectives gather all the metrics and traces that are related to specific applications, filtering out the noise from other distributed systems.

“DevOps and Site Reliability Engineers are important, but they aren’t the only application performance stakeholders,” Abrams continued. “Developers are also involved in performance tuning and troubleshooting containerized microservice applications. That’s why Instana has created an entire User Experience specifically for the developer community.”

Instana’s automatic APM solution for dynamic applications is unique in its ability to automate every step of the application monitoring lifecycle, from monitoring deployment to application discovery and monitoring. The company continues to shake up the monitoring industry by automatically consuming any source of performance and tracing information, including popular open source solutions like Jaeger and Zipkin. Like other Instana APM capabilities, the new Kubernetes monitoring occurs automatically, making it the quickest and easiest way to monitor Kubernetes applications and assure their performance.
