  • Lumu Closes $7.5 Million To Help Companies Measure Cyber Compromise In Real-Time

SoftBank and Panoramic Ventures Co-Lead Funding in Fast-growing, Miami-based Startup

Miami, FL – March 10, 2021 – Lumu, creators of the Continuous Compromise Assessment cybersecurity model, today announced that it has closed its Series A round of funding for the amount of $7.5 million. The round was co-led by SoftBank Group Corp’s SB Opportunity Fund and Panoramic Ventures. Proceeds from the new round of funding will serve as growth capital for sales and marketing initiatives, and additional research and development. Lumu also announced that Dr. Paul Judge, Managing Partner of Panoramic Ventures and a member of the Opportunity Fund’s investment committee, has joined the company’s board.

“We believe that Lumu will help businesses change how they operate cybersecurity by putting them in control of the impact of cybercrime in their organizations. Ricardo is a proven entrepreneur with a track record of building and operating disruptive companies in the cybersecurity space,” said Paul Judge. “SoftBank’s commitment to fueling the growth of black, Latinx and other minority-owned companies remains a priority.”

Lumu is a cloud-based solution that collects and standardizes metadata from across the network, including DNS queries, Network Flows, access logs from perimeter proxies and/or firewalls, and spam box filters, and then applies Artificial Intelligence to correlate threat intelligence from these disparate data sources to isolate confirmed points of compromise. Lumu is founded by cybersecurity veteran Ricardo Villadiego who previously founded Easy Solutions which was acquired by BC Partners and Medina Capital in 2016. He has held positions at IBM, Internet Security Systems and Unisys Corporation.

“Despite billions of dollars per year being spent to secure corporate networks, attackers continue to find ways to penetrate their defenses and worse still, often remain undetected inside the network for months or even years. Lumu’s Continuous Compromise Assessment model flips the conventional security model on its head by assuming that the network is compromised and forces you to prove otherwise,” said Ricardo Villadiego, Founder & CEO of Lumu. “These industry leading venture firms’  investment in Lumu validates the imperative need for organizations to measure compromise continuously and intentionally as the core initiative to improve their cybersecurity posture.”

Since officially launching at the RSA Conference in February 2020, more than 1,300 customers across a range of industries and geographies have signed up for Lumu’s offering and adopted its model of Continuous Compromise Assessment. During this time, the Lumu Platform has analyzed more than 55 billion metadata records and detected more than 11 million adversarial contacts.

ISS’s former CEO Tom Noonan; and Palo Alto Networks’s former CEO, Lane Bess, are also part of the investment round.

    About Lumu

Headquartered in Miami, Florida, Lumu is a cybersecurity company focused on helping enterprise organizations illuminate threats and isolate confirmed instances of compromise. Applying principles of Continuous Compromise Assessment, Lumu has built a powerful closed-loop, self-learning solution that helps security teams accelerate compromise detection, gain real-time visibility across their infrastructure, and close the breach detection gap from months to minutes. • Open Mainframe Project Kicks Off First Quarter with New Members, Additional COBOL and Linux on Z Resources and Launch of the 2nd Annual Open Mainframe Summit

    • OMP welcomes ASG Technologies, BMC Software and High School Technical Services to its global ecosystem
    • COBOL Check, a new testing framework for COBOL applications, will complement the COBOL Training Course and leverage the support of the COBOL Working Group
    • ConsoleZ is a new project that will modernize z/VM and zLinux

SAN FRANCISCO, March 9, 2021 – The Open Mainframe Project (OMP), an open source initiative that enables collaboration across the mainframe community to develop shared tool sets and resources, today welcomes ASG Technologies, BMC Software and High School Technical Services as well as COBOL Check and ConzoleZ to its growing global community.

“Despite the pandemic, Open Mainframe Project experienced record growth over the past year,” said John Mertic, Director of Program Management at the Linux Foundation. “We more than doubled the number of projects hosted and that is a direct result of the commitment and talent of our members and contributors. Their passions are pushing projects to meet technical milestones and members are collaborating on governance, which has helped Open Mainframe solidify our role as the premiere resource for devops technology and education.”

COBOL and Linux on Z Continue to Take Center Stage

COBOL’s ability to support digital transformation is measurably faster and lower-risk than any of the alternatives, which is why there is an estimated 200 billion lines of code being used today. COBOL’s value to the IT industry and global economy is sometimes underestimated, as is its contemporary usage and viability. COBOL is up-to-date technology, supporting the latest advances and innovations such as micro services, containers and cloud.

COBOL Check aims to enable unit testing for COBOL applications, including those hosted on IBM Z systems, and can support micro testing off-platform on Windows, OS X, Linux, or Unix. It has no dependencies on resources hosted on the Z system, which makes it easy to implement and key to supporting future technologies. For developers, COBOL Check will reduce code modifications and offers a shorter lead time to production. The program also improves the design, understandability, maintainability, and longevity of core business applications and supports IBM’s mainframe modernization program by enabling restructuring of existing applications of APIs. COBOL Check will complement the COBOL Training Course and will leverage the support of the COBOL Working Group.

ConsoleZ strives to modernize Linux on Z by offering a new open source tool for z/VM and zLinux. It is a web user interface that gives browser access to z/VM console data and CP commands, while limiting access to certain teams. It can save more time and resources so teams don’t have to interact with many z/VM LPARs. ConsoleZ is secure, efficient and has a better user interface.

    Continued Growth of the Ecosystem

Open Mainframe Project, which launched in 2015 by The Linux Foundation, is now comprised of 43 business and academic organizations. Today, the project welcomes ASG Technologies, a leading provider of solutions for the information-powered enterprise; BMC Software, a global leader in software solutions for the Autonomous Digital Enterprise; and High School Technical Services, which offers coding and technology services in 50+ topics for students and adults.

“The world’s largest organizations continue to rely on the mainframe,” said Jeff Boatright, Senior Vice President, Development at ASG Technologies. “As they accelerate digital transformation, advancing the mainframe ecosystem is more critical than ever. We’re thrilled to join Open Mainframe Project and contribute our expertise in enabling organizations to modernize mainframe culture, processes and tools and to empower the next generation of mainframe professionals.”

“We’re excited to bring the combined expertise and experience of BMC, Compuware, and RSM Partners to the Open Mainframe Project to support ongoing innovation on the mainframe,” said John McKenny, SVP and General Manager of ZSolutions at BMC. “With mainframe processing and transaction levels increasing in most industries, there is an increased need for compute power to support mission critical applications, and mainframe modernization is absolutely critical. We have a deep relationship and history of collaboration with the Open Mainframe Project and look forward to working with other members for an open source future of the mainframe.”

“Through our live events and training services, we teach how to build and manage mainframe applications and promote best practices for mainframe design, development and maintenance,” said Matt Zand, Program Manager for High School Technology Services. “As a provider of advanced training to students and adults, HSTS is excited about partnering with Open Mainframe Project and contributing to the education and training projects like Mainframe Open Education, the COBOL Training Course and the Mentorship Program.”

The new members will collaborate on vendor-neutral open source projects with the mission of building community and adoption of open source on the mainframe. The project strives to build an inclusive community through investment in open source projects and programs, career development, and events that provide opportunities for the mainframe community to collaborate and create sustainability.

  • Linux Foundation Announces Free sigstore Signing Service to Confirm Origin and Authenticity of Software

Red Hat, Google and Purdue University lead efforts to ensure software maintainers, distributors and consumers have full confidence in their code, artifacts and tooling

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., March 9, 2021 –  The Linux Foundation, the nonprofit organization enabling mass innovation through open source, today announced the sigstore project. sigstore improves the security of the software supply chain by enabling the easy adoption of cryptographic software signing backed by transparency log technologies.

sigstore will empower software developers to securely sign software artifacts such as release files, container images and binaries. Signing materials are then stored in a tamper-proof public log. The service will be free to use for all developers and software providers, with the sigstore code and operation tooling developed by the sigstore community. Founding members include Red Hat, Google and Purdue University.

“sigstore enables all open source communities to sign their software and combines provenance, integrity and discoverability to create a transparent and auditable software supply chain,” said Luke Hinds, Security Engineering Lead, Red Hat office of the CTO. “By hosting this collaboration at the Linux Foundation, we can accelerate our work in sigstore and support the ongoing adoption and impact of open source software and development.”

Understanding and confirming the origin and authenticity of software relies on an often disparate set of approaches and data formats. The solutions that do exist, often rely on digests that are stored on insecure systems that are susceptible to tampering and can lead to various attacks such as swapping out of digests or users falling prey to targeted attacks.

“Securing a software deployment ought to start with making sure we’re running the software we think we are. Sigstore represents a great opportunity to bring more confidence and transparency to the open source software supply chain,” said Josh Aas, executive director, ISRG | Let’s Encrypt.

Very few open source projects cryptographically sign software release artifacts. This is largely due to the challenges software maintainers face on key management, key compromise / revocation and the distribution of public keys and artifact digests. In turn, users are left to seek out which keys to trust and learn steps needed to validate signing. Further problems exist in how digests and public keys are distributed, often stored on websites susceptible to hacks or a README file situated on a public git repository. sigstore seeks to solve these issues by utilization of short lived ephemeral keys with a trust root leveraged from an open and auditable public transparency logs.

“I am very excited about the prospects of a system like sigstore. The software ecosystem is in dire need of something like it to report the state of the supply chain. I envision that, with sigstore answering all the questions about software sources and ownership, we can start asking the questions regarding software destinations, consumers, compliance (legal and otherwise), to identify criminal networks and secure critical software infrastructure. This will set a new tone in the software supply chain security conversation,” said Santiago Torres-Arias, Assistant Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Purdue / in-toto project founder.

“sigstore is poised to advance the state of the art in open source development,” said Mike Dolan, senior vice president and general manager of Projects at the Linux Foundation. “We are happy to host and contribute to work that enables software maintainers and consumers alike to more easily manage their open source software and security.”

“sigstore aims to make all releases of open source software verifiable, and easy for users to actually verify them. I’m hoping we can make this easy as exiting vim,” Dan Lorenc, Google Open Source Security Team. “Watching this take shape in the open has been fun. It’s great to see sigstore in a stable home.”

  • InMotion Hosting Announces the Acquisition of RamNode

InMotion Hosting (IMH) announces the acquisition of RamNode.com, a provider of affordable and high-performance unmanaged VPS Hosting.

LOS ANGELES, March 8, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — InMotion Hosting today announced the acquisition of Atlanta-based RamNode.com, an established provider of high-performance unmanaged virtual private servers (VPS).

Under the terms of the deal, RamNode.com, its customers, staff and 5 data centers in Los Angeles, Seattle, Atlanta, New York City and the Netherlands will now be under the InMotion Hosting umbrella. InMotion Hosting intends to continue to leverage the current team at RamNode and RamNode.com will be managed as a separate entity with no changes to its core product line.

Nick Adams founded RamNode in 2012 when he identified the need for affordable unmanaged servers and RamNode was among the first to go big in this space with SSDs and a focus on high performance. Nick approached InMotion Hosting in late 2020 about the possibility of IMH acquiring RamNode. He expressed great satisfaction with the entire experience and with his decision to transition RamNode to IMH. “Everything I have seen indicates that InMotion Hosting wants the business to grow and wants to put time and effort into it and has a vision and the strategy to make it happen. If I had the resources of IMH, what they are planning is exactly what I would do. That is what gives me high confidence that RamNode is in the right hands.” Nick also added, “InMotion Hosting decided to take on the entire team at RamNode, which was of particular importance to me.”

When asked about his own departure from the company, Nick mentioned that, “It’s been a good run and I am honored that I was able to serve RamNode’s customers for over 9 years. But it’s time for me to move on to another challenge, something that also allows me to find a better work-life balance.”

The acquisition was completed seamlessly in early February and was facilitated by Web Ventures (webventures.io), the acquisitions arm of InMotion Hosting. This is the first web hosting company acquisition by Web Ventures, who have so far focused on products in the WordPress ecosystem. Their portfolio includes W3 Total Cache, weForms and Sprout Invoices among others.

Web Ventures’ core business philosophy is to be the transition partner for technology companies that have grown to a certain size and are unable to fuel further growth and innovation on their own.

According to Sunil Saxena, co-founder of both InMotion Hosting and Web Ventures, the difference between Web Ventures and venture capital, or private equity firms, is that, “Web Ventures is rooted in the technology space. We built InMotion Hosting from the ground up and we truly understand the pain points of this industry. Our focus is not to tear down a business and flip for a quick profit. Instead we want to build on the foundation started by these entrepreneurs and synergistically work with their core values and offerings to take the business to the next level.”

Both Nick and Sunil stressed the importance of company culture and values and how they found common ground there as they moved through the acquisition process.

As per Sunil, “Really important was vetting the people and culture and the way business was done and how they treat their customers. One of the primary reasons that we proceeded with this acquisition is the people at RamNode and how they brought the business to this point and the critical role they will be playing to accelerate the business going forward.”

RamNode’s newest products have OpenStack as their underlying infrastructure platform. InMotion Hosting, which offers a full suite of web hosting products and cloud solutions, recently announced the general availability of their on-demand private clouds on OpenStack. This synergy between the technical roadmaps of the two companies, along with the ability to invest in technology and resources, will allow InMotion Hosting to quickly fuel future innovation for RamNode customers including better products, better infrastructure, more data centers and a better user experience.

  • Applitools Trusted by Sonatype to Ensure App Quality in Nexus Lifecycle

Sonatype increases time-to-market and eliminates bugs and visual drift in applications after adding Applitools Eyes to test automation lifecycle

SAN MATEO, Calif., March 9, 2020 — Applitools, provider of a next generation test automation platform powered by Visual AI and Ultrafast Test Cloud, today announced the use of Applitools Visual AI on Sonatype’s Nexus Lifecycle which helps developers and security professionals make safer and smarter open source choices across the software supply chain. Sonatype first sought Applitools to address a core problem that was affecting the functionality of its web applications: visual drift due to code changes with unaccounted UI dependencies.

To download and learn more about the full case study, visit: (https://applitools.com/case-studies/sonatype/).

When developing its Nexus Lifecycle product, Sonatype noticed that small changes in code altered the application visually in unanticipated ways. Sonatype used a range of functional test automation tools, but visual issues were not being detected. Functional tests would consistently pass, even as application changes rendered the UI unusable. Dev teams also tried pixel-diff comparators but indicated a high degree of false positives from pixel diffs.

Prior to using Applitools Eyes, the Sonatype development team spent the equivalent of three full-time engineers working to uncover and address undetected failures each release. This work often functioned as a spot-check for 1,000+ pages of the application during development, slowing down the delivery of product to market.

Since using Applitools Eyes, Sonatype has seen a complete eradication of visual drift in its applications. Today, if engineers make a change in their margins across a number of pages, all the differences show up as highlights in Applitools. Applitools also enables engineers to quickly accept identical changes across a number of pages – leaving only the unanticipated differences.

“Applitools helped us automate our visual validation which allowed our engineers to focus more on creating business value,” said Jamie Whitehouse, Director of Product at Sonatype. “With unit tests, you check them in once and then run them forever. Once they’re running, you expect them to stay green and check them only when they’re red. Now, imagine being able to do the same thing with visual tests. You write them once and only check them when they’re red. Imagine how much more productive you would be if you didn’t have to worry about missing visual changes.”

Applitools Eyes is the only AI-powered test automation platform sophisticated enough to handle the most complex and evolving challenges organizations face when delivering quality web and mobile apps. • ConnectALL Funds Scholarship for Students in STEM to Honor Female Technology Pioneer Betty Knight

The University of North Georgia will award the Betty Knight – ConnectALL Scholarship to a deserving student seeking a degree in the technology field.

ATLANTA – March 8, 2021 — ConnectALL, a leading provider of value stream management (VSM) solutions, today announced it will be funding a scholarship to the University of North Georgia (UNG) in honor of technology pioneer Elizabeth (Betty) Knight. The Betty Knight – ConnectALL Technology Scholarship is designed for students who wish to study a technology-related discipline and plan to enter a technology field. UNG, which is designated as a State Leadership Institution, offers a STEM program that includes degree programs in Computer Science, Cybersecurity and Mathematics.

“My grandmother was an amazing woman in her own right, but her successes in the technology industry were truly extraordinary for a woman at that time,” said ConnectALL President and COO Lance Knight. “I place her in a very small group of female technology pioneers that include Ada Lovelace and Katherine Johnson, and I am honored to provide an incentive for others to follow in her footsteps.”

    The Betty Knight Legacy
Betty Knight entered the IT field late in life, beginning with a personnel job at the GE Light Military Electronics Division (LMED) in Utica, New York. Knight took the IBM Programmers Aptitude Test (PAT) as a “control” and aced it, kick-starting a career that spanned nearly three decades. During that period, her achievements included designing an early timesharing network architecture, starting an online Seniors’ Forum that became the AARP, and creating and managing a version of Microsoft MSN Online designed specifically for senior adults.

While encouraging women to enter technology fields, Knight had been seeking a way to honor Betty for several years, when it occurred to him to start a scholarship program. “We hope this financial assistance will provide aspiring technology pros with the support they need to move forward in the field,” said Knight. “We also hope our efforts will inspire women to enter a technology-related profession. International Women’s Day seems like the perfect time to make this award public.”

“The Mike Cottrell College of Business at the University of North Georgia understands the importance of opening doors for women into the fast-growing, high paying careers in computer science, cybersecurity and information systems,” said Dr. Mary Gowan, Dean of the Mike Cottrell College of Business. “One of our goals is to increase the number of women in the talent pool for technology jobs, and we are doing that through our commitment to include middle school and high school young women in our GenCyber summer programs, through creating networking opportunities for women students with technology professionals, and through offering scholarships to support students in these disciplines. We appreciate that ConnectALL is lending a hand with our efforts.”

This meritorious scholarship will be awarded to a student in the Mike Cottrell College of Business who is studying Computer Science, Information Systems or Cybersecurity at UNG. The winner will be determined by a committee, with preference given to a student who has exhibited a passion for technology since high school, is excelling in extracurricular competitions, and/or is actively mentoring others in the field.

  • Conexiom Marks Record Year of Growth Driven by Increased Global Demand for Sales Order Automation

Leading automation platform added record number of customers, doubled headcount, and secured funding from leading growth equity firm ICONIQ Capital

VANCOUVER, British Columbia—March 4, 2021 — Conexiom, the leading provider of sales order and invoice automation solutions, today announced record growth in revenue, employees, and customers, despite the pandemic’s impact on global business. Conexiom also reported a company-best net promoter score (NPS) of 72, signifying its ongoing commitment toward increased satisfaction and successful business outcomes for customers.

“Out of all our successes in 2020, I am most proud of our NPS score of 72,” said Ray Grady, president and CEO of Conexiom. “An NPS of 72 is almost unheard of in the software industry. This score truly reflects the value that our product and customer success teams deliver on a daily basis. Our customers know they can trust Conexiom to help them achieve their business goals, exceed ROI, and deliver a superior customer experience.”

Industry-leading manufacturers and distributors, such as Chevron, HP, and Bunzl, chose Conexiom’s automation platform in 2020 to maintain business resiliency during the pandemic and to provide ongoing, unprecedented operational efficiencies that reduce costs and errors, and improve customer service levels.

Conexiom is on a mission to eliminate the expensive, time-consuming, and error-prone manual processing of sales orders and invoices. Companies large and small require an automation platform like Conexiom’s to eliminate manual entry and approvals in the order capture process, and to transform complex, unstructured data into touchless, structured data that is 100% accurate and delivered seamlessly into the customer’s ERP.

With over $15 trillion in manual B2B sales orders in the U.S., North America and Europe alone each year, the opportunity sales order automation presents hasn’t gone unnoticed. Based on this growing opportunity, ICONIQ Capital infused $40 million into Conexiom last summer as a strategic growth investment.

“2020 was certainly a unique and rewarding year for Conexiom as we partnered with wholesale distributors and manufacturers worldwide in the most trying of times,” said Grady. “We believe that the growth we have seen—despite the lingering and evolving pandemic—underscores the impact a purpose-built sales order and invoice automation platform can have on a company’s top and bottom line, as well as the experience they deliver to customers.”

Conexiom’s momentum stems from a productive 2020 that started with Grady’s hiring in February. Since then, the company has strategically built out its leadership team. Key executive hires include Bob Burns as chief financial officer, Judd Marcello as executive vice president and chief marketing officer, Justin Finnegan as executive vice president of services, John Cadigan as vice president of cloud operations and chief security officer, Dominic Aelberry as vice president of EMEA sales, and, most recently, Erik Severinghaus as executive vice president of business development.

Overall, the Conexiom team doubled in size in 2020, and the company shows no signs of slowing down. Conexiom plans to grow its employee base again this year and is particularly focused on roles that deliver greater value for customers, such as engineering, account management, and account services.

The company recently announced a strategic expansion into EMEA with Aelberry at the helm, as well as a new Salesforce integration, Conexiom for Salesforce Service Cloud and B2B Commerce, now available on the Salesforce AppExchange. In addition to the Conexiom for Salesforce integration, Conexiom also offers a robust integration platform with pre-built solutions for leading ERP providers, including Epicor and SAP.

Conexiom is becoming recognized as the leading platform for customers looking to fully automate complex and mission-critical trade documents, including RFPs, sales orders, AP documents, ASN, SPA, tax certificates, and more. G2 recently awarded Conexiom “High Performer” status in the order management category of its winter ratings.

“The biggest takeaway from 2020 and the pandemic has been digital transformation as a business imperative—it’s no longer a distant hope or wishful thought,” Grady said. “Increasingly, we’re seeing global and prominent regional manufacturers and distributors turning to Conexiom as they realize the time to modernize business processes and automate is now.”
