  • Puppet Announces State of DevOps Market Segmentation Report, Dives Deeper Into Trends and Patterns by Industry, Region, Company Size and More

Report reveals surprising industry gaps in IT performance as well as differences in DevOps starting points and more

PORTLAND, Ore., May 31, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Puppet, the standard for automating the delivery and operation of the software that powers everything around us, today announced the findings of the State of DevOps: Market Segmentation Report. The new report is the first of its kind, revealing additional insights by industry, region, department and company size, based on the 2017 State of DevOps Survey data [1]. Over the past six years, Puppet has surveyed more than 27,000 technical professionals, making the State of DevOps Report the most comprehensive and longest-running study on the topic of DevOps.

This new market segmentation report reveals how companies across industries and regions are progressing on their DevOps journey. Among the findings:

    • Most organizations start their DevOps journeys by addressing their most acute pain points.
Deployment automation, version control, continuous integration and infrastructure automation were the most common starting points for the DevOps journey. Least common starting points were lean practices, such as working in small batches to allow single piece flow, visualization of key quality and productivity metrics, and setting limits on work in progress.
    • The larger the company size, the higher the proportion of low IT performers. We found that there’s little difference in the proportion of high IT performers between companies of various sizes. However, as the company size grows, the proportion of low IT performers also increases.
    • Automation is not as pervasive as you think.
The majority of our respondents reported high levels of manual work across configuration management, deployment, testing and change approval processes. As they adopt DevOps practices, automation is a key enabler along the journey, though it remains inconsistent and spotty across their organizations.
    • Industry matters.
While all industries have about the same proportion of high IT performers, the proportion of low IT performers by industry varies greatly. The media and entertainment and retail industry have the lowest percentage of low IT performers, while financial services, insurance and manufacturing companies had the highest proportion of low performers.

“Today, every company around the world has the same priority – automation at scale – and they’re achieving this through DevOps,” said Nigel Kersten, State of DevOps Report author and Puppet’s Chief Technical Strategist. “While the data shows that companies of all types and sizes are making progress, we still have a long way to go to eliminate manual work that prevents companies from scaling automation success. More importantly, the State of DevOps body of research underpins that every business has the potential to become a top performer and we’re excited to help on that journey to pervasive automation.”

The full State of DevOps: Market Segmentation Report is available for download. The release of today’s report marks the launch of Puppet’s 2018 State of DevOps research initiative. The 2018 State of DevOps Survey will open the first week of June and the 2018 State of DevOps Report will be available in September.

  • Vulcan Cyber Announces $4M Seed Round to Help Enterprises Eliminate Vulnerability Remediation Gap and Achieve Continuous Protection

Industry’s first continuous vulnerability remediation platform delivers exposure insight and orchestrates remediation action and validation, reducing dwell time from months to hours

TEL AVIV, May 30, 2018 – Israeli startup Vulcan Cyber today announced $4 million in seed funding for its mission to eliminate the Vulnerability Remediation Gap that unnecessarily exposes enterprises to massive cyber risk. Backing for the technology platform, which lets security teams gain the insight needed and take the action required to continuously eliminate exposed vulnerabilities in their production systems, comes from YL Ventures with participation from additional prominent cybersecurity investors.

Organizations today are dramatically increasing their pace of change and innovation, adopting Agile Development and DevOps processes while constantly deploying and upgrading new and innovative applications and technologies. This speed of change coupled with the ever-expanding number of vulnerabilities in today’s enterprise software stack, and hackers who are constantly probing for this “low hanging fruit,” creates a reality of incessant and unrelenting risk. In fact, recent well-known breaches including Equifax as well as the WannaCry and Petya attacks all exploited known vulnerabilities. Vulcan Cyber was founded to eliminate this risk.

By 2020, 99% of vulnerabilities exploited will continue to be ones known by security and IT professionals for at least one year, according to Gartner. Dwell time, the time frame from discovery to prioritization to fix, is months or more in most organizations. According to a recent Ponemon Institute study, “Today’s State of Vulnerability Response,” the average enterprise “wastes weeks coordinating teams and manual tasks when remediating a vulnerability.” Delays in discovery and analysis, as well as planning and prioritization of remediation, adds months to dwell time. Many of these delays occur as cross-functional teams struggle to manage remediation while also ensuring business continuity.

The Vulcan Cyber Continuous Vulnerability Remediation platform eliminates the most critical risks caused by vulnerabilities while at the same time avoiding any unexpected impact to business operations. Vulcan reduces dwell time from weeks and months to hours. Vulcan Cyber’s comprehensive data collection aggregates data from dozens of scanning tools while its advanced exposure analytics deliver unprecedented insight into the true risk of existing vulnerabilities in the deployed enterprise stack. Vulcan then automatically prioritizes, plans, orchestrates and validates remediation. Vulcan is the industry’s first remediation orchestration engine that coordinates the teams, tools and tasks needed to successfully and rapidly eliminate exposure and risk.

“Enterprises today are experiencing a state of continuous risk exposure,” said Yoav Leitersdorf, managing partner at YL Ventures, who led the Vulcan Cyber funding round. “This exposure is a board level concern. The speed of change and innovation and volume of constant probes and attacks has simply outpaced the tools and skilled resources IT security teams have.  And for many teams, it simply feels like they’re in a never-ending storm of crisis and reactive activities.”

IT security and operations teams today rely on dozens of vulnerability assessment and patch management tools and are using manual processes and custom scripting to tie them together.

By automating the collection and integration of all the relevant vulnerability data from these tools across the enterprise IT stack, and correlating this information with risk exposure, Vulcan provides insight that enables continuous evaluation of exposure and prioritization of remediation. Vulcan then orchestrates patch management, IT service management tools and the teams and tasks needed to continuously remediate the most critical exposure in production environments. Lastly, Vulcan validates remediation effectiveness and feeds the new data back into the insight engine. Vulcan integrates out of the box with all popular scanning, configuration management and patching tools as well as provides open APIs to connect new scanners, tools and feeds into the platform.

“The team at Vulcan has the right vision to deliver IT security teams unprecedented insight and the ability and confidence needed to successfully eliminate exposure and risk. Vulcan has the potential to be transformative for enterprises, taking them from a state of continuous exposure to continuous protection,” Leitersdorf added.

Andy Ellis, CSO of Akamai, concurred, “Organizations today have diverse ecosystems, from on-premise bespoke applications to cloud-deployed services.  Keeping track of the state of these applications and systems — often owned by distinct engineering and operations teams — in order to ensure that system maintenance keeps up with the never-ending flow of vulnerabilities and exposures is vital.  Continuous and integrated visibility into remediation is the first step to remediation orchestration for enterprises.”

“Vulcan’s approach to enable and empower both IT security teams and their operations counterparts is a leap forward, giving us a vision for a world where companies aren’t being breached every day with exploits against vulnerabilities that have been known about for months or years”, said Ellis.

Yaniv Bar-Dayan, Vulcan Cyber CEO and co-founder explains that vulnerabilities are the “dirty” but critical work of IT Security. “It has become almost impossible for CISOs and their teams to understand and manage the significant and systemic risk of vulnerabilities in their production systems, leaving them in a state of continuous exposure. It might sound more glamorous to talk about zero day and next generation threats, but vulnerability remediation is truly where the rubber meets the road. The only way to deal with this continuous risk exposure is through continuous remediation, achieved with robust data collection, advanced analytics, automation, and closed loop remediation planning, orchestration and validation. This is exactly what we are delivering to IT security teams with Vulcan Cyber.”

The Vulcan Platform is currently in limited availability to qualified customers. General availability will be in late 2018. For more information, visit VulcanCyber.com.

  • FireMon Announces Agreement to Acquire Lumeta

Technology integration enables customers to discover, secure and monitor previously unknown applications, networks and endpoints, both on-premise and in the cloud

SOMERSET, N.J. – May 29, 2018 – FireMon, a global leader in network security policy management, today announced the company has reached an agreement to purchase Lumeta Corporation, a leader in cyber situational awareness for delivering complete real-time visibility into the extended network and across all connected endpoints.

FireMon created the network security policy management market nearly 20 years ago. However, in today’s dynamic environment where new devices, cloud resources and other assets can join, depart and move within a network at any moment, it can be difficult to achieve full cyber situational awareness. Security teams often struggle to identify all assets on their network and understand how they are connected and how they communicate in real-time. And, for enterprises and government agencies with large-scale network operations that extend into the cloud, this challenge is significantly magnified.

Lumeta’s technology solves this problem by discovering, mapping and analyzing all enterprise connectivity, both on-premise and in the cloud. This continuous identification of new devices, routers, cloud connectivity and more, enables FireMon customers to extend the capabilities of the FireMon platform to previously unknown network elements and cloud resources. This reduces enterprise attack surfaces and exposes elements and activity that represent a security risk.

The addition of Lumeta’s technology advances FireMon’s mission: to improve security through the implementation of intent-based security. Intent-based security bridges the traditional gap between business and security by enabling business owners and DevOps teams to determine the business intent of applications (and the related security and compliance requirements) and automating the generation of rules required to enforce that intent. The FireMon platform accomplishes this by translating business language to the language spoken by the variety of firewalls, UTMs, load balancers, etc. in corporate environments. This results in more effective and compliant security, while allowing DevOps teams to focus on growing the business.

Lumeta’s technology will enable FireMon customers to extend intent-based security to on-premise and cloud assets that were previously unknown and ensure the right security measures are in place in an automated way utilizing an organization’s existing security infrastructure.  This will result in significantly improved security without adding an operational burden on security teams.

The acquisition, which is subject to customary closing conditions, is expected to be completed within the second quarter of 2018. Upon closing of the transaction, FireMon intends to continue operating Lumeta as a stand-alone business, while infusing additional resources to accelerate Lumeta’s continued technology development and integration with FireMon. Reggie Best will continue as Lumeta’s president and serve on the Executive Leadership team at FireMon.

    About FireMon

The FireMon platform delivers continuous security for hybrid enterprises through a powerful fusion of vulnerability management, continuous compliance and orchestration. Since creating the first-ever network security management solution 15 years ago, FireMon solutions have continued to deliver visibility into and control over complex network security infrastructure, policies and risk for more than 1,500 customers around the world. • MariaDB TX 3.0 Delivers First Enterprise Open Source Database to Beat Oracle, Microsoft and IBM

Offers advanced data protection, purpose-built storage engines, temporal processing and Oracle compatibility features never before offered by an open source database

MENLO PARK, Calif. and HELSINKI – May 24, 2018 – MariaDB® Corporation today announced the release of MariaDB TX 3.0, the first enterprise open source database solution to deliver advanced features that, until now, required expensive, proprietary and complex databases. Application developers and database administrators (DBAs) can now break beyond the traditional database mold and respond quickly to today’s rapidly changing requirements. MariaDB TX 3.0 uses purpose-built storage engines to simultaneously support multiple workloads with different characteristics – transactional, analytical, write-intensive or extreme scale. Expanding the number of use cases supported, MariaDB also introduces temporal processing, Oracle compatibility and advanced data protection for sensitive personal and personally identifiable information (SPI/PII). With MariaDB TX 3.0, customers gain the capability and confidence to easily, quickly, securely and affordably run their mission-critical business on an enterprise open source database.

“For years, organizations have been squeezed by the high cost of running their core business on proprietary database offerings with no easy way out. With MariaDB TX 3.0 and MariaDB Server 10.3 GA at its core, we are not only creating a streamlined way to migrate applications to MariaDB, we’re pioneering a new standard for enterprise open source databases,” said Max Mether, Head of Server Product Management at MariaDB Corporation. “MariaDB users can now mix and match multiple purpose-built storage engines to support a range of use cases with the best possible performance – all at the same time and with the same familiar database.”

    MariaDB: The Oracle Alternative

For too long, proprietary database vendors have constrained IT with layers of complexity and high costs, holding back both innovation and business growth. The process of migrating to an agile, more modern solution has historically been time consuming, complex and resource-heavy, and lacked critical features found only in costly proprietary databases.

MariaDB TX 3.0 is the first enterprise open source database to deliver Oracle compatibility, including Oracle-compatible sequences and a stored procedure language compliant with Oracle PL/SQL, enabling Oracle Database users to reuse existing code and established skill sets when migrating applications or deploying new ones. Development Bank of Singapore (DBS), as a result of its collaboration with MariaDB on Oracle compatibility, has been able to migrate more than 50 percent of its mission-critical applications in just 12 months from Oracle Database to MariaDB. This compatibility, combined with the new MariaDB Red Rover Migration Practice, helps customers migrate to MariaDB with confidence.

    Easy Temporal Data Processing

MariaDB TX 3.0 introduces built-in, system-versioned tables, enabling developers to effortlessly and elegantly build temporal features into applications. This eliminates the need to manually create columns, tables and triggers in order to maintain row history, freeing DBAs to simply create new tables with system versioning or alter existing tables to add it, streamlining the process significantly. Developers can query a table with standard SQL to see what data looked like at a previous point in time, such as looking at a customer’s profile history to see how preferences have changed over time.

    The Perfect Database Every Time

MariaDB benefits from a unique architecture that can be configured through pluggable purpose-built storage engines deployed on a single database on commodity hardware. Customers can support a variety of different workloads at the same time by mixing and matching InnoDB for transactional queries, ColumnStore for analytical queries, MyRocks for write-intensive workloads or Spider for extreme scale – all in the same schema. No matter the use case, MariaDB can be tailored perfectly every time.

MariaDB TX 3.0 includes general availability of the MyRocks and Spider storage engines.

    • MyRocks: A write- and space-optimized storage engine for solid-state drives (SSDs) that supports write-intensive workloads such as IoT and M2M. Other use cases include e-commerce clickstream and purchase applications that require a continuous stream of writes without impacting the user experience.
    • Spider: A distributed storage engine for read, write and storage scaling, where the amount of data, devices or users is greater than a single database instance and needs to be distributed across multiple database instances. Use cases include web shopping carts and cookies for millions of website visitors that require high performance with both scalability and concurrency.

    Advanced Data Protection

No other enterprise open source database has built-in data protection to shield sensitive and personally identifiable information from being exposed, whether accidentally or maliciously. MariaDB TX 3.0 adds the ability to anonymize data through complete data obfuscation or pseudo-anonymize data through full or partial data masking. It’s advanced data protection and security that’s never separated as a costly add-on.

    Availability

MariaDB TX 3.0 will be generally available for download starting tomorrow.

  • Platform.sh Raises $34M to Bring Speed and Confidence to Enterprise Cloud Deployments

Investment to Accelerate Growth and Customer Success in North America, Following Strong Adoption

San Francisco, May 23, 2018 – Platform.sh, a provider of an idea-to-cloud application platform that simplifies cloud infrastructures, today announced it has raised $34 million in a Series C funding round. U.S.-based Partech led the round, along with Idinvest Partners, Benhamou Global Ventures (BGV), SNCF Digital Ventures and returning investor, Hi Inov. Platform.sh will use the investment to accelerate its go-to-market strategy in North America and support its rapidly growing customer base in the region.

Platform.sh is a comprehensive “idea-to-cloud” application platform that simplifies cloud infrastructures, enabling enterprises to realize all the promises and benefits of the cloud without its ever-growing complexities. More than 650 enterprise customers across the globe currently use the Platform.sh product today to develop, test, deploy and run their cloud-based web applications with speed and confidence. The company, which has experienced 110 percent year-over-year revenue growth this year, addresses every major industry vertical and fuels the innovation of some of the world’s leading brands, including Magento, Gap Inc., The Financial Times, the British Council, and Hachette Book Group.

In order to meet escalating customer expectations, enterprises need their app deployments to be executed faster than ever before, but cloud infrastructures are inherently messy and require a level of expertise that is extremely wide and deep. As a result, implementing a continuous deployment strategy to ensure fast-evolving business needs are met, while ensuring uptime, security and compliance, has become one of the most daunting challenges in software development. Platform.sh makes this simple.

Designed to support the most complex enterprise-scale production environments, Platform.sh combines an automated cloud with its unique rapid cloning technology that can instantly spin up and deploy exact clones of entire live web applications in less than 60 seconds, allowing development teams to ensure that new features do not break once in production. The unification of production, testing and development workflows results in 90 percent less DevOps efforts as compared to DIY solutions, and 40 percent improved productivity as compared to managed hosting providers at a significantly lower total cost.

“As cloud infrastructure providers have created more complexity, being able to deploy and run in the cloud requires more time, expertise and investment,” said Reza Malekzadeh, general partner at Partech and a former senior director at VMware. “Platform.sh has an incredibly powerful solution that helps enterprises realize the full and latest potential of cloud infrastructures – speed, performance, security and more – without the growing hurdles and constraints.”

Alban Wyniecki, investment director at Idinvest Partners, added: “The cloud application platform market is an incredibly fertile space, and given the impressive organic adoption of Platform.sh in the U.S., we’re investing to capture more of that demand. The company’s strong traction and fast growth in North America, Europe and China signify that the company is well-positioned to become a market leader.”

The public cloud market has been growing at an unprecedented rate due to enterprises increasingly deploying more apps to the cloud. Per recent findings from research firm Gartner, the platform as a service (PaaS) technologies market, which includes the application platform as a service (aPaaS) segment to which Platform.sh belongs, is one of the fastest growing cloud markets. It is forecasted to be worth more than $15B in 2018 and will nearly double by 2021.

“Platform.sh has been great for us; the turnaround time for changes is very fast now, and we are able to update the site at any time of day, even on match days if we have to,” said John Dollin, senior operations manager at Arsenal Football Club. Richard Jones, CTO at Inviqa, a leading digital agency and consultancy, added: “After moving to Platform.sh, we delivered the new Arsenal FC website with significantly improved productivity. Our deployments are error-free and the site now runs faster and safer. When we need to, we are even able to deploy on Fridays!”

“The customer traction and organic growth we’ve seen over the past 12 months – especially in North America – made it clear that we are ready to scale on a global level,” said Frederic Plais, CEO of Platform.sh. “The productivity gains that our platform delivers are beyond anything offered by managed hosting solutions, or DIY approaches with cloud infrastructures. The recent years have seen an explosion of incredibly strong tools that help implement novel cloud architectures, but the mainline approach is patchwork and piecemeal. Platform.sh proposes a unified model that transcends categories, not only solving difficult cluster orchestration and continuous delivery problems, but also improving testing and quality assurance of applications.”

  • Chef Accelerates Enterprise Ability to Deliver Effortless Infrastructure and Any App Anywhere

ChefConf 2018 showcases Chef Automate 2.0, new Chef Workstation and significant application and compliance automation enhancements to enable high-velocity post-digital transformation

CHEFCONF 2018 – CHICAGO — MAY 23, 2018 — Chef, the leader in Continuous Automation, today announced the next-generation automation platform, Chef Automate 2.0, that unifies infrastructure and applications work and enables enterprise organizations to rapidly and securely build, deploy and manage any application, legacy or modern, in any environment. Chef also announced availability of the new Chef Workstation, along with significant enhancements to Chef Application Automation (Habitat) and Chef Compliance Automation (InSpec). These new innovations were unveiled at ChefConf 2018, being held in Chicago from May 22-24.

“The race to modernize IT by deploying and managing new and legacy applications in multiple environments is greatly hindered by the complexity of current toolsets, including containers,” said Stephen Elliot, Program Vice President, Management Software and DevOps at IDC. “Solutions that span the application lifecycle and unify the teams currently tasked with owning and optimizing small pieces of the puzzle will enable enterprises to move their modernization initiatives forward, and achieve their business goals, more rapidly.”

A recent survey conducted by Chef of more than 365 DevOps, applications and infrastructure leaders revealed that while most (72 percent) see “time from code to production” and “time from commit to deploy” as the most critical measures of application deployment success, a majority (60 percent) also take days, weeks or months to complete application builds and (56 percent) need the same amount of time to deploy apps into production. The innovations introduced by Chef today are designed to accelerate those processes by enabling IT to deliver immediate, effortless and scalable infrastructure to achieve compliance at velocity and to build, deploy and manage any application in any environment.

“Enterprise software development and delivery is so often gated by the operational concerns of infrastructure – from desktops to servers, storage and networks – applications end up as a second-class citizen,” said Corey Scobie, SVP of Product and Engineering at Chef. “This is insufficient to thrive in a world where the primary interface to customers, and therefore revenue, is the application. The targeted solutions we introduced today enable executives and their organizations to make that critical shift quickly and easily.”

    Chef Automate 2.0

Chef Automate has been rebuilt from the ground up to provide performance, scale and advanced analytics required by enterprises using DevOps at scale to meet the demands of post-digital transformation. Chef Automate now provides a single control plane for infrastructure and compliance automation to enable a closed-loop ‘detect, correct, automate’ process to make infrastructure effortless.

    New features include:

    • Enhanced operational visibility and debugging – New tools and visualizations, including a streaming event feed, trend graphs and a rich query language, help users analyze infrastructure and compliance automation data from a unified dashboard.
    • Compliance scanning and reporting in any environment – Integration with cloud compliance capabilities of InSpec 2 enhances scanning, which can now be used to evaluate cloud configurations (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) via APIs for compliance on either an ad-hoc or ongoing basis. Chef Automate 2 also supports scanning of Cisco IOS equipment as a significant start on extending modern compliance capabilities to network devices.
    • Re-architected for speed and flexibility – A Go-based microservices architecture, with a modern, performant web UI atop a REST API, enables Automate 2 to support tens of thousands of nodes from a single installation. In-place upgrades with automatic data migration from Chef Automate 1 ensure that customers retain all historical information.

    NEW! Chef Workstation

Chef Workstation enables DevOps teams and practitioners to complete ad-hoc DevOps tasks using all of the familiar Chef capabilities, without agents. This provides a simple and effective way to use Chef to complete tasks and then seamlessly scale those tasks through Chef Automate.

    Capabilities include:

    • New standard desktop/laptop experience for Chef – Includes a new ‘target mode’ for executing Chef recipes or entire cookbooks remotely and Introduces ‘chef’ command as the single point of entry.
    • Foundation for a better workstation experience – Bundling all the tooling previously included in the ChefDK provides an improved user experience and cohesion between tools to deliver a seamless experience for any infrastructure automation task.

Habitat – Automate Any App Anywhere – Build, Deploy, Manage

Habitat supports an ever-widening array of supported application release scenarios, enabling teams to ‘build, deploy and manage’ any app, anywhere. It is ideally suited to ‘Lift, Shift and Modernize’ initiatives as enterprises seek to find a unified way to ship all of their apps – from monoliths to microservices, bare metal to containers and datacenter to cloud.

A fast-growing number of enterprises, including top US ticket sales site Ticketmaster and Alaska Airlines, recently named the top airline in the US (1), are finding great benefits in using Habitat to deploy applications in any environment.

“We’re very interested in what Habitat can help us with,” said Stephen Nelson-Smith, principal infrastructure developer, Ticketmaster. “From the work we’ve done so far, it allows the iterative migration of mission-critical applications to the cloud by enabling us to build a single, intelligent artifact that moves, unchanged, from development to production whilst wrapping a consistent cloud-native interface around legacy applications. This is giving us a clear path to implement our strategy to containerize and cluster our services.”

“In today’s world, supporting containers and microservices is a necessity,” said Steven Mullinax, director of infrastructure engineering, Alaska Airlines. “Habitat can help get us there with applications that run anywhere.”

    New capabilities include:

    • Habitat Builder on-premises – Customers can now take advantage of Habitat’s build once, run anywhere capabilities behind the firewall. This is critical for financial services, government and other highly-regulated environments.
    • Expanded ecosystem integrations – An updated Kubernetes Operator for Habitat, export to Azure Container Service (AKS), Helm chart exporter, Open Service Broker integration and integration with Splunk for operational analytics validate Habitat’s cloud-native, “runs anywhere” approach to modern application delivery.

InSpec – Compliance at Velocity to Accelerate DevSecOps

InSpec is the first step in Chef’s ‘Detect, Correct, Automate’ approach to cloud migration and continuous automation. It helps organizations maintain an up-to-date view of compliance status in production, detect security issues long before they reach production and reduce risk while delivering applications faster.

    New capabilities include:

    • Cloud configuration compliance – Verify AWS and Microsoft Azure policies, with Google Cloud Platform support in beta. More than 10 new AWS resources bring it to CIS Level 1 benchmark completeness.
    • Improved out-of-the-box experience – More than 30 new resources, including support for Cisco IOS network devices as agentless targets, are built in.
    • Drastically improved performance – Users now see up to 90 percent performance gains on Windows and 30 percent on Linux/Unix.

“Enterprise IT leaders face a variety of challenges regarding the need to modernize applications and infrastructure to maintain competitive advantage and increase user satisfaction as they accelerate post-digital transformation,” said Barry Crist, CEO of Chef. “Chef allows them to build, deploy and manage all applications – legacy or new – much more easily and consistently, in any environment. Our technology is a level-setter, allowing them to match or even exceed the application deployment velocity achieved by even the most innovative and well-resourced hyperscalers in the market today.”

  • New partner agreement between Redgate and CEI signals database DevOps is moving into the mainstream

In a move that further demonstrates the increasing adoption of database DevOps, Redgate Software has reached a partnership agreement with prominent IT services provider, Computer Enterprises, Inc. (CEI).

The leading vendor of Microsoft SQL Server tools, Redgate has spent the last two years expanding and enhancing its software portfolio to enable users to introduce DevOps to database development. By plugging into the same infrastructure already in place for application development, Redgate tools stop the database being a bottleneck, reduce errors, and speed up deployments.

Pittsburgh-based CEI is similarly inspired about the advantages DevOps can bring to the database. A Microsoft Gold Partner for over 14 years, it has multiple competencies across applications, DevOps, cloud and data. With offices throughout the US, it offers consulting, custom software development, and managed services to clients ranging from the Fortune 50 to smaller regional firms.

The database is increasingly entering the conversation, as Chris Wootten, DevOps Senior Solutions Account Executive at CEI, explains. “We help a lot of clients introduce DevOps to their software development process and if there’s a database at the back end, it’s often a concern. DevOps speeds up development and enables new features and changes to be released faster. If the database isn’t included, it can hold releases back and prevent businesses reaping the full benefits.”

This is where Redgate enters the picture. Redgate has been developing SQL Server tools for over a decade and more than 100,000 companies now use them, including 91% of those in the Fortune 100. The tools typically resolve difficult, complex, or time-consuming database development issues, often by automating them, and enable databases to be included in DevOps processes like version control, continuous integration and automated deployments.

Importantly, the tools integrate with those used for application development like Team Foundation Server, Git, TeamCity, and Octopus Deploy, so databases can be developed alongside applications.

“And this is where CEI enters the picture and why we are so excited they are joining the Redgate Partner Program,” explains Cassandra Lloyd, Partners Manager at Redgate. “Introducing each step of the DevOps process, whether for databases or applications, calls for a change in the way developers work. The Solutions team of Microsoft-certified architects at CEI has over 20 years of experience in helping clients build better software through the introduction of practices like DevOps.”

By addressing the different needs and demands of business management, software development, and IT operations, CEI enables software to be developed and deployed in a way that delivers advantages right across the business.

Becoming a Redgate partner means it now has the inside track on product development at Redgate and access to Redgate’s worldwide customer base. CEI joins Redgate’s growing worldwide network of partners which supports customers in Europe and the Asia Pacific as well as North America.
