  • Dropbox Pioneers Future of Cloud Infrastructure with SMR Technology Deployment

Company will be first to deploy SMR at exabyte scale; to provide open-source software enabling other enterprises to follow suit

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – June 12, 2018 – Dropbox, a leading global collaboration platform, today announced a new chapter in the evolution of Magic Pocket, its custom-built storage infrastructure. The company is successfully deploying Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR) drive technology, which will increase overall storage density, reduce the company’s physical data center footprint, and provide significant cost savings—without sacrificing performance or reliability. Dropbox will be the first company to test and deploy SMR technology at this scale.

Dropbox anticipates approximately a quarter of its Magic Pocket infrastructure will be on SMR drive capacity by 2019. In the coming months, the company also plans to open source the test software it created in the process, which will let other companies qualify SMR technology for their own enterprise storage environments.

“Creating our own storage infrastructure was a huge technological challenge, but it’s already paid dividends for our customers and our business,” said Quentin Clark, SVP of Engineering, Product, and Design at Dropbox. “As more teams adopt Dropbox, SMR technology will help us scale our infrastructure by providing greater flexibility, efficiency, and cost savings. We’re also excited to make this technology open-source so other companies can benefit from it.”

The move to SMR technology has been a significant undertaking: Dropbox sourced SMR disk drives from third-party suppliers, designed a bespoke hardware and component ecosystem around it, and created new software to ensure its compatibility with existing Magic Pocket architecture. The company ultimately chose SMR technology for its unique ability to expand storage capacity from 8TB to 14TB per disk, while still delivering the performance and reliability the company expects.

This process is another example of the company’s engineering expertise in building large distributed systems. By the end of 2018, Dropbox will have an infrastructure footprint spanning 29 facilities in twelve countries and four continents, including storage for users inside and outside the U.S.

Expanding the impact of Magic Pocket

In 2016, Magic Pocket set a new standard in the industry by introducing an exabyte-scale storage infrastructure that was exceptionally reliable and secure, and could meet the dynamic workloads of more than 500 million registered users. The system was designed to provide annual data durability of over 99.9999999999%, and availability of over 99.99%. This move to SMR technology is the next phase in the company’s development of its cutting edge, custom-built infrastructure.

  • Vulnerable Serverless Applications are Open to a New Wave of Crypto-Jacking Attacks

Security researchers demonstrate that serverless apps can be converted into virtual crypto-mining farms by hackers

Tel Aviv, June 5, 2018 – PureSec, serverless security pioneers and maker of the world’s leading Serverless Security Runtime Environment (SSRE), today released a report which details how hackers can now turn a single vulnerable serverless function into a virtual crypto-mining farm by taking advantage of the scalable nature of serverless architectures.

By exploiting the auto-scaling capabilities of serverless*, a single attack could hijack serverless resources in order to run hundreds to thousands of instances of popular tools that mine cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Ethereum and Monero.

Researchers from leading serverless security company PureSec were able to force serverless functions, which were vulnerable to remote code execution, to download an off-the-shelf crypto-miner during function execution. The miner performed its crypto-mining computations in parallel to the application’s normal execution tasks, making the hijack invisible to the end user. The targeted company might only discover the issue when they get a monthly serverless bill of tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Significantly, during a simulated attack, the PureSec team also caused the serverless platforms to scale, running the same function repeatedly until they reached the platform’s limit for concurrent operations. The PureSec team effectively turned one single vulnerable function into a virtual crypto-mining farm.

The details were revealed in a report published by PureSec today. The report highlights that serverless applications are ideal territory for crypto-mining attacks and are often poorly-protected.

The researchers tested the attack successfully on three leading public-cloud serverless platforms. PureSec stressed that this is not a flaw in the platforms, but a result of the auto-scaling nature of serverless architectures and vulnerable application code.

Cryptocurrencies rose sharply in price at the end of 2017, and hackers are constantly seeking new ways to steal computing resource in order to illicitly crypto-mine. Common tactics include Javascript miners hidden in webpages and hijacking corporate cloud infrastructures. More and more crypto-jacking attacks are reported every week.

“Serverless applications are a crypto-jackers dream,” said Ory Segal, PureSec co-founder and CTO. “They scale automatically, and a hacker can easily turn a single vulnerable function into a virtual crypto-mining farm almost instantly. The same strengths and benefits that make serverless ideal for many software companies also attract malicious actors. Like any new technology, serverless brings new security challenges.”

“Because serverless architectures are so new, companies are still struggling to learn how to protect their applications from attacks,” said Shaked Zin, PureSec co-founder, and CEO. “Traditional application security solutions have become irrelevant since the infrastructure is gone. We developed our Serverless Security Runtime Environment to defend against application-layer vulnerabilities like remote code execution which our research team used in this simulated attack. Crypto-mining attacks aren’t going away, so serverless users need to be prepared.”

You can download the complete report here.

    *What is serverless?

Serverless is a new form of cloud computing. Instead of having to manage servers to run code, serverless lets developers upload functions’ code directly to the cloud. Whenever the function is triggered by an event, like opening a web-page or uploading a file, the cloud starts executing the function. If the function is triggered a hundred times, the cloud provider will run a hundred functions concurrently. This scalability means that a company is only paying for the computing time and resources they need, when they need them, without the costs or overheads of servers and without the need to manage any infrastructure.

    About PureSec

As the global leader in serverless architecture security, PureSec enables its customers to build and maintain secure and reliable serverless applications. The company’s end-to-end serverless security solution is the industry’s first and most comprehensive Serverless Security Runtime Environment (SSRE).

  • Rookout Announces First Production Debugging Solution for AWS Lambda

Rookout provides unprecedented access to the live states of serverless functions while they run

Tel Aviv – June 4, 2018 –  Rookout, the rapid production debugging company, today announced the first production debugger for AWS Lambda, Amazon’s leading serverless computing platform. For the first time, software engineers will now be able to painlessly debug their live serverless functions.

Serverless is the latest major innovation in computing infrastructure, growing at an estimated 700% annually as companies seek to take advantage of the flexibility and convenience it offers. In serverless, functions are executed in the cloud without any need for developers to create or maintain virtual machines or containers. Serverless infrastructures are scalable, cheap and easy to use, with Amazon Web Services Lambda leading the market.

The same things that make serverless useful are also barriers when it comes to development and deployment; each function runs in its own instance in the cloud, making it hard to monitor exactly how it is operating. Lambda functions communicate with various sources, from third-party APIs that can change any time to Internet-of-Things devices with unpredictable real-world inputs. To debug serverless apps, a developer has to create a test environment and try to simulate these varied sources, using guesswork and hoping for the best.

Rookout works like a debugger on the live serverless code on Lambda in production. Using its friendly IDE, a developer can simply click on the part of code they want to instrument and then get a full stack trace or any variable state, all from the live code without stopping or changing anything in the environment. Rookout gives an unprecedented level of visibility to serverless code and how it actually behaves in the real world, not just in a simulated environment.

“Serverless is a natural evolution path for cloud computing,” said Rookout co-founder and CEO Or Weis  “But it presents new challenges when it comes to debugging. Rookout lifts the veil and lets developers get full debug data from their production Lambda functions while they run serverlessly.”

“The sheer speed of serverless development means that complex bugs occur in production,” said Liran Haimovitch, Rookout co-founder and CTO. “Bugs happen, and they cost a lot of money. Now with Rookout, serverless doesn’t have to be a black box; developers can see inside Lambda and find out exactly what’s really happening in production, letting them take full advantage of the new serverless infrastructures.”

    About Rookout
Rookout is the Rapid production debugging solution which collects data on-demand from live code and pipelines it immediately to any destination, such as alerting and monitoring tools.

With Rookout’s real-time instrumentation technology, a company can tackle bugs and issues without any need for coding, re-deploying or restarting the application. Rookout currently supports Python, JVM and NodeJS.

  • ParkMyCloud Announces Scale Group Parking for Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform

Leading Cloud Cost Optimization Platform Expands Savings on Public Cloud Resources

June 1, 2018 (Dulles, VA) – ParkMyCloud, the leading enterprise platform for continuous cost control in public cloud, announced today that it has released cost optimization support for Microsoft Azure virtual machine scale sets and Google Cloud Platform managed instance groups.

The ParkMyCloud platform helps Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure (Azure), and Google Cloud Platform (GCP) customers save money on cloud resources by automatically integrating cost control into their DevOps processes. ParkMyCloud saves money by scheduling cloud resources to turn off when they are not needed – which they call “parking”.

Azure scale sets and GCP managed instance groups are groups of cloud resources that are frequently used for redundancy and scaling purposes. For testing and development, common practice is to set up a non-production network architecture that mirrors production. All too often, the non-production environment is left running, wasting money on resources that aren’t being used. With ParkMyCloud cost control in place, users can automate “off” or “scaled down” schedules for these resources, ensuring that they only pay for services they are actually using.

“Customers using scale groups in public cloud are typically savvy users who are increasingly cost conscious,” said Bill Supernor, ParkMyCloud CTO. “With each release, we are expanding ParkMyCloud’s automation engine to support the cloud resources our customers are using.  This allows them to easily incorporate cost optimization with their DevOps process.”

Earlier this year, ParkMyCloud released automated usage-based cost optimization called “SmartParking” for AWS, Azure and GCP. In the coming months, ParkMyCloud plans to release support for Alibaba Cloud as well as additional resource types  in AWS, Azure, and GCP.

    About ParkMyCloud

ParkMyCloud is a SaaS platform that automatically identifies and eliminates public cloud resource waste, reducing spending by 65% or more — think “Nest for the cloud.” AWS, Azure and Google users such as McDonald’s, Sysco Foods, Unilever, Avid, and Sage Software have used ParkMyCloud to cut their cloud spending by millions of dollars. ParkMyCloud helps companies like these optimize and govern cloud usage by integrating cost control into their DevOps processes. For more information, visit https://www.parkmycloud.com.
