  • New Redgate SQL Prompt release addresses technical debt in legacy SQL code

Cambridge UK, Tuesday, 31 July 2018 – The latest release of Redgate Software’s most popular tool, SQL Prompt, elevates it from helping to develop and standardize new code to discovering problems in legacy code. The winner of the Visual Studio Magazine 2017 Reader’s Choice Gold Award in the productivity tools category, SQL Prompt plugs into SQL Server Management Studio and Visual Studio and enables developers to write, format, refactor and analyze SQL code.

When SQL Prompt v9 launched in November 2017, it introduced a code analysis feature which spots code issues and hidden pitfalls as users type. It parses the code, as a compiler would, but rather than compile the code, it checks the syntax for compliance with a built-in set of over 90 rules. It then highlights each issue, or ‘code smell’, by underlining the offending line of code with a green squiggle.

Developers can see immediately any issues they’ve introduced, and clear explanations and suggestions to improve their code and fix the errors are provided, along with links to further reading online. This ensures that all code committed to source control complies with a common set of coding standards and practices, and prevents issues from creeping into the build that might, now or eventually, cause performance, maintenance or security problems.

That’s not the end of the story. The latest update to SQL Prompt allows users to analyze an entire script of legacy code, no matter how large, and see a list of all the issues contained within it. If users double-click on an issue, they’ll see that line highlighted in the code and can view more details. Code issues can also be grouped by type and exported to a CSV file which can be shared across a team or attached to a ticket in bug-tracking or task management software.

This makes it easy to learn about the health of certain sections of the database code, or assign clean-up tasks, with each developer on a team assigned a set of issue types. By acting as a worklist for improving overall code quality, it makes it much easier to do code reviews, discover technical debt, and resolve small errors before they become big problems.

It thus helps teams prevent technical debt from entering the code base, remove it from existing code, and ensure that released code conforms to the team’s defined coding standards.

As Grant Fritchey, Microsoft Data Platform MVP, concludes: “When code analysis was introduced to SQL Prompt less than a year ago, it was a big move. As well as helping you write SQL code faster, it helped you write SQL code better. Extending the feature to legacy code means anyone can now use it to improve code that was written months, even years ago, as well as the code they’re working on right now.”

Existing users of SQL Prompt can start using the new functionality immediately by updating to the latest version using the Check for Updates link in the Help menu. New users can explore the feature by downloading a fully-functional trial version of the software from the Redgate website. Once installed, SQL Prompt will appear in the standard menu of SQL Server Management Studio or Visual Studio and can be used just like any other feature of the IDE.

  • Ada and Zendesk Unite to Improve Chatbot Experience for Customer Service

Ada and Zendesk will bring new functionality to chatbot and live chat services to improve customer and agent experiences

TORONTO—July 25, 2018—Ada, the leading provider of artificial intelligence (AI) customer service chatbots, along with Zendesk, a customer service and engagement platform, today announced a deep integration that will greatly improve customer and agent experiences by enabling a symbiotic relationship between AI and human agents.

Ada brings value as a chatbot provider with:

    • Simple user experience – Ada’s intuitive authoring environment makes it easy to create content without the need for a deep understanding of AI.
    • Rapid deployment – The ability to quickly go live in 30 days or less, versus multiple months.
    • Simple and complex use cases – While other chatbots can handle only simplistic requests, Ada also supports use cases that authenticate users and provide them with personalized information such as account balance, order information and more.
    • Multi-lingual support – Ada’s chatbot can be trained in one language and propagates the machine learning across multiple languages.

The integration between Ada and Zendesk Chat involves the use of Ada’s AI technology to train chatbots to fulfill simple tasks while also identifying when a user needs to be transferred to a live agent. The bot-to-live-agent handoff occurs when more complex or sensitive issues arise, and the chatbot will direct the user to a customer support representative, providing the agent with the full bot conversation history to ensure a seamless transition. For example, if a customer is seeking to cancel their account, the chatbot will direct them to a live agent to increase the probability of retaining the customer.

“As customers become more familiar with chatbot experiences across platforms, the need to enable a more fulfilling self-service experience is paramount for us. Frustrating interactions for a customer lead to a less beneficial engagement with a live agent, and often results in duplicate conversations,”said Mike Murchison, CEO of Ada. “We look forward to our continued partnership with Zendesk to better serve customers at any stage in their lifecycle by providing seamless, pleasant conversations. This is the new wave of customer service and we are proud to power it.”

Zendesk Chat, the largest live chat and messaging provider in the world, provides an open and customizable chatbot platform via the Conversations API. Designed to seamlessly integrate with bot partners like Ada, this solution lets businesses leverage the power of artificial intelligence to augment their customer interactions and quickly resolve simple tasks. Their chatbot solution provides businesses flexibility to build and extend their customer experiences based on their unique needs.

  • Rainforest QA Rolls Out New Features to Enhance Testing Visibility

Reporting feature allows development teams to monitor overall health of test suite, Results Categorization adds test categorization capabilities

SAN FRANCISCO – JULY 24, 2018 – Rainforest QA, the leader in on-demand quality assurance (QA) solutions, today announced new features that provide businesses with a robust set of tools to maximize visibility into their testing workflows. Through platform enhancements powered by Domo’s chart-building capabilities, Rainforest’s new Reporting feature allows development teams to instantly access and download reports, charts and graphs depicting the overall state of their test suite. This gives them the data necessary to make informed decisions on what, how much, and how often to test. In addition, the company launched Results Categorization, a new feature that allows customers to categorize each individual test outcome, adding clarity into what action needs to take place next while increasing visibility into the overall testing suite.

As companies continue releasing new apps at the speed of continuous delivery, development teams need to remain apprised of testing conditions at all times to quickly address potential problems and bugs before code hits production. At the same time, as the number of tests and data amassed scales, aggregate insights into testing speed, coverage and predictability are crucial for improving the QA process without creating unnecessary delays. By incorporating reporting functionality directly into Rainforest, customers can instantly access, consume and interact directly with their data to gain visibility and evaluate how their product and QA teams are performing.

“In order for us to continue delivering exceptional employee experiences for today’s modern, digital workplace, we need to ensure there are no discrepancies in our system,“ said Jason Poland, Software Developer at iOffice. “Our development teams use Rainforest’s various reporting tools to conduct health checks at a glance. Plus, they provide all the analytics we need to get the most out of our QA processes and deliver a superior user experience for our customers at all times.”

In addition, by expanding Rainforest’s testing platform with the new Results Categorization feature, companies can easily review and label each test result to help them understand and quantify the amount of bugs addressed. Team members no longer need to repeatedly interrupt their workflow for status updates and can spend more time collaborating on getting new features and products to market faster.

“Development teams today are moving quickly in the era of continuous delivery, and a common pain point we find among them is the lack of a quick and convenient method for gaining a comprehensive view of their testing suite,” said Derek Choy, CIO at Rainforest. “With Reporting and Results Categorization built right into the testing workflow, customers no longer need to feel in the dark about their QA processes and can continue focusing on scaling the business.”

  • Forrester Study Reveals Software Quality Metrics that Differentiate DevOps Leaders from Laggards

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., July 23, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Results from new Forrester Consulting research reveal the 20 most important Agile and DevOps quality metrics that separate DevOps/Agile experts from their less advanced peers. The study, which publishes today, was commissioned by Continuous Testing leader Tricentis and was led by Forrester Vice President and Principal Analyst Diego Lo Giudice.

The research examined 94 quality metrics that were classified into four categories. As a high-level summary, the research uncovered the following:

    • Understanding of business risk is the most important determining factor of DevOps and Agile maturity.
    • Experts focus primarily on contextual metrics (e.g., requirements coverage) while others focus on “counting” metrics (e.g., number of tests).
    • Experts are more likely to measure the user experience across an end-to-end transaction while others rely on application-specific or team-specific metrics.

Detailed results and analysis are available in the complete report: The Definitive Software Quality Metrics for Agile+DevOps.

    Agile/DevOps Leaders vs Laggards
The study also found that companies with the most successful Agile and DevOps initiatives do a number of things differently:

    • They are transforming software testing into Continuous Testing by adopting five core practices, such as automating end-to-end functional testing and integrating testers into cross-functional teams.
    • They are almost twice as likely to consider automating the software quality process to be a “critical business differentiator” (53% vs. 27%).
    • They are significantly more likely (by 23 percentage points) to have high levels of automation for key testing and QA processes (test case design, functional test automation, test data management, etc.).

“Organizations adopt DevOps to accelerate the delivery of innovative software that creates positive user experiences,” explained Clark Golestani, Managing Director of C Sensei Group and former President, Emerging Businesses and Global CIO of Merck. “If you start accelerating delivery without also rethinking your approach to quality, you will end up rapidly delivering updates that drive your customers to competitors. Automated, continuous testing is the gate that allows you to protect your organization from significant risk as you innovate at the speed modern business demands.”

    The Risk “Blind Spot”
Risk is a prevalent thread throughout the various parts of the report. Most firms (80%) believe they deliver within acceptable business risk, but fewer than a quarter state that their QA and testing processes completely cover business risk. Moreover, just 15% of respondents say that their test suites reliably provide a good indication of business risk.

Interestingly, although risk-related metrics do not rank high in overall popularity, Agile and DevOps experts measure them significantly more frequently than the non-experts do. In fact, Agile and DevOps experts consistently rank risk-related metrics among their top 3 most valuable metrics in different phases and categories.

    Additional Findings
    Other notable findings include:

    • Only 26% of firms with active Agile/DevOps adoptions are currently practicing the five core Continuous Testing practices shown to separate Agile/DevOps leaders from laggards.
    • Many CXOs and high-level decision makers are vastly overestimating the maturity of their firms’ Agile and DevOps practices.
    • Firms that rely on manual testing are more than twice as likely to report that testing is a bottleneck (59%), compared to those with more automated quality processes (26%).

The complete Definitive Software Quality Metrics for Agile+DevOps report is available for complimentary download on the Tricentis web site.

  • Redlock Announces New Innovations And Enhanced Adoption For Google Cloud Platform

New features enable deeper security visibility into Google Cloud Platform, real-time network monitoring, and improved compliance with industry-specific and other mandates

From Google Cloud Next in San Francisco, CA (July 23, 2018) – RedLock, the Cloud Threat Defense company, today announced major enhancements to the RedLock Cloud 360 platform that deliver significantly greater interoperability and insights with Google Cloud Platform (GCP). Among other benefits, the new features in RedLock Cloud 360 offer integration with GCP Flow Logs, support for GCP Orgs, improved compliance packs, and greater backing for other Google Cloud services such as Kubernetes. The new package offers a range of new capabilities and enhanced support to organizations leveraging the public cloud for their computing and applications requirements.

“The cloud computing model lives up to its undeniable potential when concerns around security and compliance are no longer obstacles, and it’s always been our mission at RedLock to help achieve that goal,” said Ankur Shah, VP of Products at RedLock. “That’s why we’ve delivered recent benefits such as enhanced integration as a launch partner for Google Cloud Security Command Center (Cloud SCC). Now, we’re proud to offer even more advanced integration with GCP, including greater visibility into network traffic, enhanced support for key features and additional backing for industry-specific regulations. We also pledge to continue developing products and services that further ease and secure operations in the cloud.”

    New features include the following.

Integration with GCP Flow Logs: RedLock provides real-time visibility into north-south and east-west network traffic, which comes through intuitive network visualization, enabling faster identification of network security threats such as access to sensitive workloads from malicious IPs; data exfiltration; crypto mining; and host compromise. It’s also now easier to identify and remediate network security risks by creating custom policies/rules, and integrating with enterprise security automation tools.

Support for GCP Orgs: This capability provides central visibility and control over every resource that belongs to an organization. GCP provides specific resource containers—such as Organizations, Folders and Projects—that allow customers to group and hierarchically organize other Cloud Platform resources. This makes it easier to manage common aspects of internal resources such as access control and configuration settings. With RedLock’s new support for GCP Orgs, customers can automatically onboard thousands of projects and underlying resources within minutes, and gain centralized governance across their GCP environment.

Improved support for HIPAA, PCI and GDPR compliance: HIPAA (the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, which covers virtually all of the healthcare industry), PCI (for the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard, which encompasses credit card usage in industries such as retail), and GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation, which protects EU citizens’ online activities) represent major compliance mandates. The new feature eases cloud adoption by offering enhanced compliance both at the infrastructure and application layers through the shared responsibility model.

Support for Additional Google Services for Security/Compliance: Additional configuration and compliance monitoring for services such as Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) and BigQuery are now available in RedLock Cloud 360. In addition to greater visibility, it accelerates the adoption of these Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) models by providing continuous security governance and monitoring.

“Just as we advocate shared responsibility for security in cloud environments, we also need shared innovation, and that’s why we’re excited to see the latest advances from RedLock,” said Vineet Bhan, Head of Security Partnerships, Google Cloud. “RedLock has long been committed to supporting Google Cloud Platform, and we look forward to continued collaboration with the company.”

Enterprise Nodes include a new custom monitor feature which allows organizations to deploy their own monitoring code and reuse existing scripts to monitor virtually any type of application or service (VoIP, SNMP, Databases, LDAP, Twitter Sentiment, etc.). Enterprise Nodes include robust security features andcan be installed and fully functional in minutes.

“Close proximity to end-users is critical for accurate monitoring of their digital experiences. Catchpoint’s monitoring infrastructure is the industry’s broadest in terms of sheer number, geographic expanse, amount of data generated (synthetic and real user), and node types,” says Daoudi. “Our customers have an unsurpassed range of flexibility and options to meet their monitoring needs, including our unique ability to offer insight into cloud or other third-party elements, moving them toward optimal availability and performance.”
