  • Sysdig Provides the First Cloud-Scale Prometheus Monitoring Offering

Company focuses on scale, workflows and enterprise access controls for cloud application monitoring

SAN FRANCISCO — March 24, 2020 — Sysdig, Inc., the secure DevOps leader, today announced cloud monitoring at scale with full Prometheus compatibility. Sysdig addresses the issues of scale, data retention, and enterprise access controls that hold teams back from organization-wide adoption of Prometheus monitoring. Sysdig also introduces support for creating dashboards, alerts, and metric analytics based on PromQL, the query language for Prometheus. Sysdig is the only enterprise monitoring solution to be fully compatible with Prometheus. This allows customers to retain their investment in existing Prometheus exporters, configurations, alerts, and dashboards. With Sysdig, DevOps and cloud teams can scale their visibility, security, and troubleshooting capabilities with a supported platform that simplifies management.

In a separate release today, the company announced PromCat.io, a free repository of curated Prometheus exporters, dashboards, and alerts to monitor any infrastructure, application, and services running in the cloud. Sysdig offers documentation and suggested configurations for PromCat integrations.

“Many of our teams started with Prometheus. However, scaling and retention became difficult. When looking for a monitoring solution, I wanted something that fit well into the ecosystem and supported Prometheus,” said Jason McGee, vice president and chief technology officer for IBM Cloud Platform at IBM. “Central context, to see all of the components of your application in one place, is a requirement. Before adopting Sysdig, we had a very distributed environment, like islands of monitoring. Each team could only see their service. There was no way to see what was going on overall.”

Organizations are moving to the cloud and DevOps workflows to ship applications faster. However, meeting customer expectations requires complete visibility into infrastructure, services, and applications across multi and hybrid clouds and on-premises data centers.

Developers are rapidly adopting open source Prometheus to monitor the performance of their applications. With more than 13,500 code commits and 6,300 contributors, Prometheus adoption is accelerating. However, as organizations transition to full-scale production, they encounter scaling and workflow issues. Additional requirements — including the need for centralized and scalable metric stores, a unified view across clusters and services, and out-of-the-box insights — are needed in order to reduce risk and maintain application availability. Without a macro view of the environment, it is difficult to anticipate issues with microservices that have cross-platform dependencies.

    New Features

Fully Compatible Prometheus Monitoring: As organizations scale cloud deployments, they want to retain the industry-standard monitoring approach their developers prefer. Sysdig is the only cloud-scale monitoring solution fully compatible with Prometheus and the PromQL query language. This enables DevOps teams to retain their investment in existing Prometheus exporters, configurations, alerts, and dashboards. The Sysdig platform enhances their existing capabilities with greater scale, visibility, security, troubleshooting, and support.

Cloud Scale: With microservices and Kubernetes, scaling is a major hurdle. With Kubernetes, there is an increase in the number of objects and labels to track. With microservices, there is a dramatic increase in instances to monitor and therefore, the number of metrics to collect. Additionally, with Prometheus, companies are forced to monitor each Prometheus server on its own, making it difficult to view trends that would be visible from a unified view. Issues on microservices that have cross platform dependencies may go unnoticed.

The Sysdig Secure DevOps Platform provides a scalable system that can handle more than 100 million metrics per second, and retain up to 13 months of data. Sysdig is the monitoring solution for IBM Cloud Platform, one of the largest Prometheus monitoring deployments today. With Sysdig, teams can adopt Prometheus compatible monitoring using an enterprise-ready platform.

    Other enhancements

    • Long-Term Datastore: With Sysdig’s data storage, Prometheus metrics are stored for 13 months, instead of just days or weeks. This gives DevOps teams access to long-term analysis to make better informed capacity planning and resource usage decisions.
    • Out-of-the-Box Kubernetes Dashboards: Sysdig reduces complexity and time to production with out-of-the-box Kubernetes dashboards. By bringing together platform monitoring and workload monitoring, DevOps teams can resolve issues faster.

“Prometheus brings tremendous value to developers which is why we standardized our monitoring approach on the open source project,” said Payal Chakravarty, vice president, product management at Sysdig. “There are, however, scaling challenges for the enterprise. By extending Prometheus monitoring, we’re able to help enterprises to use the Prometheus monitoring approach they love, while also giving them the scale, workflows, controls, and insights they need to maximize performance and availability.”

    The Sysdig Approach

To date, Sysdig is the only security company to support a secure DevOps approach by integrating monitoring and security into a single platform. Cloud teams can embed security, maximize availability, and ensure compliance. By integrating security into the DevOps process, teams can realize the business goals in their transition to cloud native. Sysdig is a strong advocate for open source technologies, including three open source technologies created by the company, sysdig, Sysdig Inspect, and Falco, an open source cloud-native runtime security project. Currently, Falco is an incubation-level hosted project in the CNCF.

    Availability

The features announced today are available to Sysdig customers now. Cloud scale will be available at the end of April.

  • Sysdig Launches PromCat, Saves Developers a Week per Integration

Industry’s first repository for vetted Prometheus integrations with documentation, configurations, and support

SAN FRANCISCO — March 24, 2020 — Sysdig, Inc., the secure DevOps leader, launched PromCat.io today. PromCat, short for Prometheus Catalog, is a curated repository of vetted Prometheus exporters, dashboards, and alerts to monitor any infrastructure, application, and service running in the cloud. Sysdig offers documentation, suggested configurations, and Sysdig customer support. There are hundreds of Prometheus exporters at all levels of completion that collect metrics from various applications and services offered by cloud vendors. Having validated integrations — exporters, dashboards, and alerts — with documentation, helps customers to decide which integration to use, how to configure them, and keep up with changes. DevOps teams can save weeks of time by reducing this research. Today, PromCat hosts integrations for Kubernetes control plane, Isteo, and a growing list of AWS services.

In a separate announcement today, the company announced the industry’s first cloud-scale, fully  Prometheus compatible monitoring solution. Like with PromCat, Sysdig continues to help organizations ship applications faster as they adopt the cloud and Kubernetes.

Blog: PromCat: A resource catalog for enterprise-class Prometheus monitoring

When developers collaborate and share, they improve visibility and strengthen security in their environments. The popularity of Prometheus has led to an abundance of shared resources; however, it can be hard to determine which resources are production-ready and capable of supporting the enterprise.

Implementing a scalable Prometheus monitoring system is a challenge, requiring tight integrations between metrics sources and collection, dashboards, alerts, and retention. It is a puzzle that requires navigating compatibility differences that take effort to set up and maintain over time. The goal of PromCat is to make it easier for developers to access the collective expertise of the cloud-native community.

Users can take the integrations from PromCat and use them with the Sysdig Secure DevOps Platform, or their own Prometheus servers. Developers do not have to use commercial Sysdig products to use the PromCat repository, unless they require support. Over the coming months, PromCat will expand to include more applications and services identified in the 2019 Sysdig Container Usage Report in the order of popularity.

“There is a wealth of code sharing online; however, it is hard to know where to look and the quality is inconsistent,” said Loris Degioanni, founder and chief technology officer at Sysdig. “Developers can spend hours testing a dashboard or an exporter only to find that it has issues. By validating, improving, and documenting, we hope to grow expertise across the community, which improves Kubernetes visibility and security for everyone.”

Sysdig was founded on the belief that innovation is stifled when core technology is controlled by a single provider. The Sysdig business model depends on adding services and support on top of open source to enhance scalability, performance, and ease of use. As new integrations are added to PromCat, all enhancements and bug fixes are contributed back to the open source community.

With this belief in the power of open source, Sysdig has heavily invested in the community. The company introduced sysdig, the open source container troubleshooting project, in 2014. Since then, the company has created two additional open source tools — Falco and Sysdig Inspect — along with contributing to other open source projects, including Prometheus and eBPF. Falco, a CNCF incubation-level hosted project, is the only runtime security project in the CNCF.

    Availability

PromCat.io is now live and new validated integrations will continue to be added.

  • Sysdig Closes $70M in Series E Funding to Enable Enterprises to Confidently Secure Cloud-Native Workloads in Production

Investment fuels company’s leadership as the most advanced Kubernetes security tool to embed security, maximize availability, and validate compliance

SAN FRANCISCO — Jan. 22, 2020 — Sysdig, Inc., the secure DevOps leader, today announced it raised $70 million in Series E funding led by Insight Partners with participation from previous investors, Bain Capital Ventures and Accel. Glynn Capital also joined this round, along with Goldman Sachs, who joined after being a customer for two years. Sysdig’s total funding to date is $206 million. Sysdig will use the funds to extend market presence and leadership in enabling enterprises to confidently run cloud-native workloads in production. The Sysdig Platform addresses both DevOps security and IT operations spaces. IDC forecasts the worldwide DevOps software tools market will reach $15 billion in 2023.

“Containers and Kubernetes development is disrupting the way organizations deploy and run containers, but when you look at the history of major technological changes, Kubernetes is still early. We invest in high-growth companies that are disrupting the old way of doing things, companies that will lead this decade-long transition. Sysdig’s novel approach of providing a single source of truth for both security and monitoring for container-based applications has proven more effective, more scalable, and higher ROI,” said Richard Wells, Managing Director at Insight Partners.

“As a customer, we are impressed with Sysdig’s technology and the company’s open source approach to security. We look forward to Sysdig joining our investment portfolio and seeing their continued growth as a leading Kubernetes security vendor,” said Soumya Rajamani, Vice President of Merchant Banking at Goldman Sachs and Sysdig Board Observer.

International expansion is a key priority for the company and will be bolstered by this investment. Sysdig also announced today the launch of a Japanese subsidiary, Sysdig Japan GK.

Kubernetes is the de facto operating system of the cloud; however, as organizations move workloads into production, security and visibility are the biggest barriers. Traditional tools and processes leave enterprises blind because they do not provide visibility with application context for these environments. To reap the benefits of the agility that containers and Kubernetes provide, enterprises need an approach that integrates security and compliance into DevOps workflows. This approach is often referred to as secure DevOps or DevSecOps.

According to Gartner, “By 2021, DevSecOps practices will be embedded in 60% of rapid development teams, as opposed to 20% in 2019. By 2023, more than 70% of enterprise DevSecOps initiatives will have incorporated automated security vulnerability and configuration scanning for open-source components and commercial packages, which is a significant increase from fewer than 30% in 2019.”

To date, Sysdig is the only security company to support a secure DevOps approach by integrating monitoring and security into a single platform. Cloud teams can embed security, maximize availability, and ensure compliance. By integrating security into the DevOps process, teams can realize the business goals in their transition to cloud native. Open by design, Sysdig provides the scale, performance, and usability enterprises demand. Sysdig customers include: Goldman Sachs, Steelcase, and Worldpay from FIS.

This announcement comes on the heels of a monumental 2019

The company made several significant updates to the Sysdig Secure DevOps Platform in 2019. At the beginning of the year, the company introduced extended Berkeley Packet Filter (eBPF) instrumentation to extend the Sysdig secure DevOps approach for container-optimized Linux platforms. During the summer, the company announced the addition of machine learning for runtime profiling and anomaly detection. With the Sysdig Secure 3.0 update in November, Sysdig became the industry’s first runtime threat prevention, incident response, and audit tool for Kubernetes.

    Business milestones

    • Sysdig more than doubled revenue from Fortune 500 banks and financial institutions.
    • 96 percent of new enterprise accounts in 2019 purchased the complete Sysdig Secure DevOps Platform, validating the secure DevOps approach.
    • The Sysdig office count grew to six with the addition of two offices: Spain and Italy.
    • The company made several key hires, including Janet Matsuda who joined as Chief Marketing Officer from Palo Alto Networks, and Kubernetes expert, Kris Nova, who joined as Chief Open Source Advocate from Heptio/VMWare and Microsoft.
    • The company won several Best Places to Work Awards, including awards from Inc., Glassdoor, and the San Francisco Business Times.

    • Sysdig joined several cloud launches, including Google Anthos and Google Cloud Run for Anthos serverless technology.
    • Sysdig expanded integrations with the leading container and cloud platforms: Red Hat OpenShift, IBM Public Cloud, IBM Cloud Paks for Multi-Cloud Manager, VMware, AWS, Google Cloud, and Azure.
    • Sysdig was elevated to Red Hat Strategic Partner status and invited as an inaugural member of the Red Hat Software Partner Advisory Council.

    Open source milestone

    • Falco, the open source cloud-native runtime security project originally created by Sysdig, was accepted as an incubation-level hosted project within the Cloud Native Computing Foundation®.

“Containers and Kubernetes will take over the world. Over the last year, we have seen competitors partner in an attempt to deliver capabilities similar to ours, but the reality is, these approaches cannot provide the level of visibility and security that we can, even when they use multiple tools. As Kubernetes adoption increases, CISOs will continue to recognize that their IT teams and security tools need to adapt. In 2020, we look forward to partnering with more Global 2000 organizations in their cloud-native journeys,” said Suresh Vasudevan, Chief Executive Officer at Sysdig.

  • Sysdig Now Available on AWS Marketplace

Sysdig solutions help enterprises monitor and secure cloud-native applications

SAN FRANCISCO, November 14, 2018–Sysdig, Inc., a cloud-native intelligence company, today announced that Sysdig is available on Amazon Web Services, Inc. (AWS) Marketplace. AWS customers can now purchase and deploy Sysdig Monitor, Sysdig Secure, and the entire Sysdig Cloud-Native Intelligence Platform directly through AWS Marketplace. Sysdig has created one of the first platforms to unify container security, monitoring, and forensics with native Kubernetes, Prometheus, and AWS services.

Enterprises that choose to purchase Sysdig through AWS Marketplace get the peace of mind of knowing that the two are easily deployable together and they can save time by simplifying tasks, including procurement and billing. This announcement comes on the heels of Sysdig being recognized as an Advanced Technology Partner in the AWS Partner Network (APN)and demonstrates the commitment by both companies to continue working together.

“Our customers want proven, easy-to-use, and reliable SaaS solutions to secure their environment and to prevent downtime or disruptions,” said Garth Fort, Director, AWS Marketplace and Catalog Services, Amazon Web Services, Inc. “Solutions that combine security and monitoring, like the Sysdig Cloud-Native Intelligence Platform, can simplify cloud-native operations, and we’re delighted to extend their availability to the 190,000 buyers using AWS Marketplace.”

For enterprises to be successful in deploying cloud-based infrastructure, they need the ability to monitor and secure their applications in real world, large-scale deployments. Effective container security and monitoring hinge on response teams being able to quickly detect, analyze, and respond to threats both during development and in live containers – from detection, to remediation, to forensics.

Sysdig monitors and secures at the container, host, and application level all from a low-resource, single point of instrumentation, which provides more data than other approaches. As enterprises continue to migrate business-critical workloads to AWS to take advantage of the scale and flexibility of cloud-native architectures, Sysdig can help enterprises avoid common operational pains, making the migration and production management easier. By pairing Sysdig with AWS, customers gain full visibility and protection into their environment, including applications, services, and hybrid environments.

“This is another step in our mission to drive container and microservices adoption. Sysdig is able to help enterprises take advantage of modern environments by giving users access to the data necessary to understand their environment, and then take action when something isn’t right,” said Loris Degioanni, Chief Technology Officer, Sysdig. “This new solution running on AWS simplifies the process for AWS users from beginning to end so that enterprises operating in the cloud can focus on delivering the ideal customer experience rather than tracking down and resolving problems.”

Sysdig will be demonstrating the Sysdig Cloud-Native Intelligence Platform at the upcoming AWS user conference, AWS re:Invent2018, happening November 26-30, 2018, in Las Vegas at Booth #281. SAN FRANCISCO, September 12, 2018 –Sysdig, Inc.,the cloud-native intelligence company, today announced it raised $68.5 million in series D funding, led by Insight Venture Partners, with participation from previous investors, Bain Capital Ventures and Accel. This round of funding brings Sysdig’s total funding to date to $121.5 million. Sysdig will use the funds to extend its leadership in enabling enterprises to operate reliable and secure containerized infrastructure and cloud-native applications.

Suresh Vasudevan, CEO at Sysdig, authored a blog post with more information on Sysdig’s funding.

Sysdig offers enterprises the first unified approach to container security, monitoring, and forensics. Unlike traditional approaches, the Sysdig Cloud-Native Intelligence Platformwas built with an understanding of the modern DevSecOps workflow across Kubernetes, Docker and both private and public clouds. Sysdig’s open source forensics technology, Sysdig, and its open source security project, Sysdig Falco, have a community of millions of users, and provide the foundation for a rich, commercial product set. Dozens of Global 2000 enterprises are Sysdig customers today, including many of the world’s largest financial institutions, media companies, cable companies, technology companies, and government agencies.

451 Research predicts the cloud-enabling technology market to grow to $39.6B through 2020, and containers are predicted to be the fastest growing segment of that market at 40%. Gartner predicts that “by 2020, more than 50% of global organizations will be running containerized applications in production, up from less than 20% today.”[1]

“As enterprises accelerate their move to cloud-native applications, they recognize the need for a new breed of solutions that will enable them to meet performance, reliability, security, and compliance requirements,” said Richard Wells, Managing Director at Insight Venture Partners. “Sysdig’s novel approach of tapping an entirely new data source that provides both security and monitoring for container-based applications has proven more effective, more scalable, and higher ROI. That significant technological advantage combined with an experienced management team led by CEO Suresh Vasudevan gives Sysdig a strong position in the marketplace and we are excited to welcome them to the Insight portfolio.”

Sysdig launched Sysdig Securein October of 2017, cementing the Sysdig Cloud-Native Intelligence Platform as the only solution to offer unified security, monitoring, and forensics with native Kubernetes and Prometheus integration for containers and microservices. Sysdig Secure is the first container security offering to take a data-driven approach across all aspects of the container lifecycle.

“Enterprises are adopting cloud-native technology for its speed of development, multi-cloud scaling capabilities, and lower total cost of ownership,” said Suresh Vasudevan, CEO at Sysdig. “But, they are hitting roadblocks with old school security and monitoring products. To be successful, these organizations need new solutions that are cloud-native. Sysdig has emerged as the only solution that delivers enterprises the complete set of capabilities needed to protect an environment, ensure that it is running smoothly, and meet compliance requirements. Sysdig delivers it all, both in the cloud and on-premise, in order to grow with companies as they undertake this journey.”

This round of funding further accelerates the strong momentum and rapid growth Sysdig has experienced over the last year. Downloads of Sysdig Falco have roughly tripled over the last 12 months and active users of the Sysdig SaaS offerings have grown nearly six times year over year. Last month, Sysdig opened a second headquarters in Raleigh, North Carolina to keep up with company growth while the company also continues to scale its offices in San Francisco, Belgrade, and London.

In addition to its global growth, Sysdig has expanded its executive team with the hiring of Suresh Vasudevan as CEOin April and Larry Castro as VP of finance and corporate operationslast month. Sysdig continues to deliver on its commitment to leading the industry by collaborating with the Cloud-Native Computing Foundation, the PCI Security Council, and industry partners and by contributing to the development of security recommendations for modern infrastructure.

  • Sysdig raises $15 million in Series B funding to expand container monitoring for enterprises

Sysdig raises $15 million in Series B funding to expand container monitoring for enterprises

The containernative monitoring company surpasses 100 enterprise customers

San Francisco, CA DATE Sysdig, the containernative monitoring company today announced a $15 million Series B funding round by existing investors Accel and Bain Capital Ventures. Sysdig will use the funds to accelerate growth, to continue building out its core technology for container and microservice environments, and to scale its operations and worldclass support infrastructure to meet growing demand.

“Containers are the building block for microservices, and represent the next great platform shift for software developers in enterprises of all sizes,” said Loris Degioanni, CEO and founder of Sysdig. “While containers deliver efficiency and agility for developers, they introduce additional complexity for monitoring, troubleshooting, and operating production environments. Sysdig was born to address these specific needs for containers and the microservices built on top of them.”

According to a recent survey, 81 percent of respondents expect their companies to increase the investment in containerbased technology. Respondents ranged from industry verticals including retail, banking/finance, manufacturing, and Internet infrastructure.

Accel Partners and Bain Capital Ventures coled this round of funding. “Containers will address the majority of use cases that heavier virtual machines do today, plus more that virtual machines cannot,” said Salil Deshpande, Managing Director at Bain Capital Ventures, who joins the board of Sysdig. “What’s needed now is software that natively understands containers, applications running within them, and services built on top of them. Sysdig has all of these capabilities and more.”

Sysdig Cloud is based on sysdig, the open source troubleshooting tool that has been downloaded by hundreds of thousands of developers, devops, and sysadmins around the world. Its patent‐pending ContainerVisionTM technology provides deep, request‐level visibility inside containers without invasive instrumentation. This approach succeeds for container monitoring where legacy monitoring fails, and at the same time makes monitoring applications and microservices simpler and more robust.

Company sails past 100 enterprise customers

“The service and support I’ve received from the Sysdig team was really impressive. I encourage anyone looking to run containers in a production environment to talk to them first.”
Branden Makana, Senior Software Engineer, CDK Global

“From exploration down to deep system captures, Sysdig has a complete approach to monitoring containerized environments.”
     Zachary Smith, CEO of Packet
