  • DevOps Institute Announces Open Testing Program for DevOps Certifications

To support the many learning styles of the Humans of DevOps, DevOps Institute adds the option to test for most of its certifications without formal prerequisites

BOCA RATON, Fla., March 30, 2020 — DevOps Institute, a global member-based association for advancing the human elements of DevOps, today announced a new Open Testing program that removes the prerequisite of leveraging formal courseware to achieve certifications from DevOps Institute’s extensive portfolio. These accredited certifications focus on modern competencies and hireable skills required by today’s organizations adopting DevOps.

“We still strongly believe that participation in structured and instructor-led courses through one of our accredited Global Education Partners is the best path to gaining the knowledge necessary to pass the examination and provide real-world value to your organization,” said Jayne Groll, CEO of the DevOps Institute. “However, we also recognize that today’s Humans of DevOps may learn in many ways, from many sources, particularly under the daily constraints of the current health crisis. We, therefore, want to remove the barriers of entry to our certifications for any individual who believes they have the skills, knowledge, ideas and learning (SKIL) experience to pass the certification examinations.”

Finding and attracting skilled DevOps and IT professionals remains a huge challenge in 2020, according to the Upskilling 2020: Enterprise DevOps Skills Report. Certifications empower DevOps Humans to demonstrate their accomplishments and SKILup to advance their careers and potential in the DevOps job market.
Examinations now available for Open Testing include:

As part of the Open Testing program, individuals can purchase and schedule online-proctored certification examinations directly through DevOps Institute or through a participating local Global Education Partner. There are no prerequisites to take the examination. Registered exam candidates will receive a self-study guide that includes the exam requirements document, a sample exam and a glossary of terms that will enable candidates to prepare by defining the scope of the examination. The approach to DevOps Institute’s Open Testing program is similar to those of other major certification programs in the market today.

Successful candidates will receive a digital badge and certificate from the DevOps Institute acknowledging their achievement.

  • DevOps Institute Cert Exams Now Available for Open Testing

DevOps Institute Cert Exams Now Available for Open Testing

DevOps Institute recently announced a new Open Testing program that removes the requirement of formal training to take one of its extensive portfolio of DevOps certifications. This approach is similar to those of other major certification programs in the market today.

Make no mistake: We still strongly believe that the structured training offered by our Global Education Partners is the best learning experience for the individual and the organization. The dynamics of the classroom encourages dialogue among learners and, particularly in a corporate setting, promote better empathy and collaboration among teams. However, we also understand that today’s Humans of DevOps may learn in many ways from many sources.

Some of you may scoff at certifications for being commoditized. Commoditization isn’t bad if it means that everyone has access to knowledge. That spirit lies is at the heart of DevOps Institute’s Open Testing program. We want to remove the barriers of entry to our certifications for any individual who believes they have acquired the skills, knowledge, ideas and learning (SKIL) to pass one of our certification examinations. Certifications are a source of pride and accomplishment that shows that an individual learned, internalized and studied knowledge. Why it be so wrong to have a whole army of certified professionals that share a common language, common practices and a common mission?

Under the Open Testing program, individuals can purchase and schedule online-proctored DevOps Institute certification examinations directly through DevOps Institute or through a participating Global Education Partner. There are no prerequisites to taking any of the examinations.

Examinations now available for Open Testing include:

Registered exam candidates will receive the exam requirements document, sample exam and glossary of terms to help them prepare by defining the scope of the examination. Successful candidates will receive a digital badge and certificate from the DevOps Institute acknowledging their achievement.

  • DevOps Institute’s ‘Upskilling 2020: Enterprise DevOps Skills Report’ Spotlights Need for Human Transformation

Based on two years of research and new data gathered from more than 1,200 IT professionals worldwide, report uncovers the state of skill sets critical to DevOps and digital transformation initiatives

BOCA RATON, Fla., March 10, 2020 — DevOps Institute, a global member-based association for advancing the human elements of DevOps, today announced the release of the data and results of the “Upskilling 2020: Enterprise DevOps Skills Report.” For the second year, the report defines the most critical and in-demand skills needed around the world to meet DevOps transformation objectives within enterprise IT organizations of all sizes. The data that underpins the report was collected through a global community research project and open survey from more than 1,200 respondents.

The research and data analysis was led by DevOps Institute’s Chief Research Analyst, Eveline Oehrlich, with support from Platinum Sponsor ServiceNow, Gold Sponsor CloudBees, Silver Sponsor BMC, and Bronze Sponsors Micro Focus and HCL UrbanCode.

The report is freely available for download at (https://devopsinstitute.com/upskilling-2020).

“Human transformation is the single most critical success factor to enable DevOps practices and patterns for enterprise IT organizations,” said Jayne Groll, CEO of DevOps Institute. “Traditional upskilling and talent development approaches won’t be enough for enterprises to remain competitive because the increasing demand for IT professionals with core human skills is escalating to a point that business leaders have not yet seen in their lifetime. We must update our humans through new skill sets as often, and with the same focus, as our technology.”

Key Findings from the ‘Upskilling 2020: Enterprise DevOps Skills Report’ include:

    • The DevOps transformation journey is still very difficult for more than 50% of respondents: Managing the people, processes and technologies associated with and necessary for a DevOps transformation are all difficult. Each category has received the same amount of responses for being a challenge.
    • Finding and attracting skilled DevOps Humans continues to be a challenge in 2020: 58% of respondents in the report [PA(2] said finding skilled DevOps individuals is a challenge, and 48% say it’s difficult to retain skilled DevOps professionals. Salaries for experienced DevOps engineers can reach beyond $179,250, according to the Robert Half Technology 2020 Salary Guide (https://www.roberthalf.com/salary-guide). Combined with the current skills gap, 2020 will be a tough year for hiring managers and HR leaders. As Jeff Weber, executive director of staffing firm Robert Half Technology, said, “The search for DevOps talent is pervasive in organizations of all types and sizes. A DevOps professional in one company might need different skills and experience in another company, which makes recruiting and hiring very difficult.”
    • The DevOps Human must be hybrid and equipped within three key skill categories: Process skills and knowledge (69% of respondents), automation skills (67% of respondents) and human skills (61% of respondents) are the top three must-have skill categories in 2020. This is a change from the 2019 research where automation skills were the top skill category and process skills and knowledge was ranked as the second most important must-have skill category.
    • Upskilling requires the attention of business leaders now: The challenges of upskilling aren’t new and according to the World Economic Forum are the biggest challenge across the world with the tech job. Unfortunately, over 38% of respondents’ organizations have no upskilling program, 21% are currently working on one, and 7% don’t even know if their organization has an upskilling program. 31% of respondents, however, have indicated that their company had already implemented a formal upskilling program within their organizations.
    • Agile, DevOps and ITIL are getting strong competition from Site Reliability Engineering (SRE): While Agile adoption (81%), DevOps adoption (75%) and ITIL adoption (25%) have grown since the 2019 benchmark report, SRE has risen from 10% adoption in 2019 to 15% in 2020. Additional philosophies such as Value Stream Management (19%) and Systems Thinking (13%) are also being leveraged. Many of these disciplines and/or frameworks co-exist within organizations.

DevOps Institute will be holding an informational webinar to share all the key findings from the Upskilling Report on Thursday, March 12 at 1730CET/12:30pmEST. To register, visit: (https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_5xXG1v4PR6Ke5LShuq092Q).

Introducing the ‘E-Shaped’ Human of DevOps

“T-shaped” Humans of DevOps professionals highlighted in the 2019 report must evolve into “E-shaped” professionals – an idea according to Sarah DaVanzo that “favors individuals with ‘breadth’ and ‘depth’ of knowledge as well as tangible and intangible skills that imply a big picture outlook and an attention to detail from being a practitioner. ‘E-Shaped People’ have a combination of ‘4-E’s’: experience and expertise, exploration and execution.”

    • Based on the most recent data analysis from the 2020 Upskilling survey, the “E-Shaped” DevOps Human is made up of the following skills categories: Three horizontal skill categories comprising automation skills, functional knowledge skills and technical skills.
    • A second grouping of skills – process and framework skills – that is a vertical skillset which focuses on flow and understanding of different practices and methods such as Scrum, Agile development and Value Stream Mapping.
    • Another vertical skill category focuses on human skills such as collaboration and interpersonal skills.

“The time is now to upskill your DevOps teams and individuals, however, this must be done across more than technical and functional skills,” said Eveline Oehrlich. “We already saw a significant demand for a variety of human must-have skills in our 2019 research and this year we saw a tremendous increase across all human skills e.g. collaboration, interpersonal skills, empathy and creativity to name a few. The most important though is the increase in value placed on the human skills, which comes from the management and business leaders in our survey. Our research shows that a mindset shift is happening with the transition from “soft” skills to “human” skills, but more importantly, today’s leaders must change their mindset to recognize the value human skills will bring to a team and organization.”

    Supporting Quotes

“At ServiceNow, our purpose is to ‘make the world of work, work better for people,’ so it’s appropriate for us to support this important piece of research about reshaping skills in the world of DevOps,” said Richard Hawes, director of product marketing for ServiceNow. “The people and culture insights are hugely valuable as enterprises seek to scale the value of DevOps, and it’s fascinating to see how they influence the discussion on process and technology. People in the industry can learn more about ServiceNow’s DevOps perspective at (www.servicenow.com/products/devops.html).”

“People, process and technology have always been the trifecta needed to execute DevOps successfully. As we strive to enhance the culture needed to predictably deliver better software faster at CloudBees, it’s been important for us to identify which skills are considered “must-haves,” which are “nice to haves” and which are “not important” across teams, roles and regions,” said Shawn Ahmed, senior vice president and general manager of the Software Delivery Automation business at CloudBees. “As the report underscores, upskilling is now more important than ever to enable meaningful collaboration between all teams to truly deliver software at an elite level.”

  • DevOps Institute Announces New Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) Foundation Course

SRE Foundation is the latest addition to DevOps Institute’s certification matrix as part of the SKIL (Skills, Knowledge, Ideas, and Learning) Framework

LAS VEGAS, Oct. 29, 2019 – DevOps Enterprise Summit – DevOps Institute (https://devopsinstitute.com/), a global member-based association for advancing the human elements of DevOps, today announced the addition of the Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) Foundation℠ to its certification matrix. The new certification introduces the principles and practices of SRE that enable an organization to reliably and economically scale critical services.

SRE Foundation will be available through DevOps Institute’s global channel of Registered Education Partners beginning in January 2020. While a training course through an accredited partner is required to take the examination, there is no prerequisite necessary to take the training.

DevOps Institute’s curriculum is based on industry research and the most up-to-date resources to enable a role-based development approach that focuses on modern competencies required by organizations adopting DevOps and SRE patterns and practices. The company delivers eight DevOps competency-based certifications and three non-certifications and includes more than 160 hours of learning materials – the most available in the market today.

“We chose to start with a foundational level SRE certification in order to equip the IT community with a common understanding of the core principles, practices, and vocabulary that are at the heart of SRE,” said Jayne Groll, CEO of the DevOps Institute.  “Site Reliability Engineering is probably the most significant advancement in guidance for IT Operations and IT Service Management (ITSM) since the early days of ITIL. Not only is SRE now an actual job role, but as a service management framework, it is most closely aligned with DevOps, Continuous Delivery and Agile.”

Based in large part on the guidance described in Google’s Site Reliability Engineering book, the certification content also includes practical advice, related practices and the need for automation in order to reduce manual work known as toil. It is tailored for practitioners and leaders focused on large-scale service availability.

The introduction of an SRE Foundation certification responds to the rapid acceleration of enterprise interest and the adoption of SRE as a service management alternative. Site Reliability Engineers are responsible for availability, latency, performance, efficiency, change management, monitoring, emergency response, and capacity planning.

  • Free DevOps Training at DOI’s Global SKILup Day

Free DevOps Training at DOI’s Global SKILup Day

The DevOps Institute (DOI) is hosting a global training day called Global SKILup Day on Dec. 10, 2019. It’s a free virtual event and they have arranged for some of the brightest minds in the DevOps space to speak/train during the course of the day.

Why global? They truly are planning on a follow-the-sun approach to training, with courses going on in each of the different regions throughout the day. In total, the event will run for 18 hours and span the globe–meaning where ever you are, free training is available to you.

The SKIL (Skills, Knowledge, Ideas and Learning) part of this free training day is DOI’s training methodology for the next phase of DevOps. They have been conducting SKILup Days around the globe for a while now, and this appears to be a virtualized extension of that effort.

“What type of training,” you ask? Well, here’s a list of topics broken down by DOI.

No matter what your interest and/or needs are, there will be something that you can pick up at this training.

As of this writing, there are 15 speakers to cover 18 hours in three regions, so while I am not party to their internal planning, this author would guess they are still filling out the engagements. Considering we’re nearly two months away, that’s not terribly surprising. What is surprising is the list of speakers contain a high percentage of recognized experts. That’s good for the training, because superstars who can’t present generally don’t have the name recognition these presenters do. And a huge chunk of effective of training is presentation.

So go sign up! Grab a spot, set the systems to do long builds and learn something new. I like to go to these type of events simply because our little lab is set in its ways, and getting exposed to new methods/ideas keeps things from getting to stale. I won’t be taking up space at DOI though, as I’d rather leave it for all of you when space is limited.

Since my current responsibility is for a testing lab, this is more important for those of you who are running public facing systems that represent your organization. If I were, the big one for me would be AIOps, because it kind of snuck up on me while working on continuous test and integrating new tools into the DevOps toolchain. In fact, my recent piqued interest in the topic came from looking at an integration and the tool was big on AIOps–though CI/CD Reference Architecture would be cool too. Attempts to standardize are interesting, because even though some parts have stabilized, we still very much live in the land of flux.

Pick something you don’t think you care too much about along with things you do. You just might find a good reason to care, and it will help you continue to rock it.

Disclaimer: I have contracted for DevOps Institute in the past (through Ingrained Technology), but I am not currently engaged by them. I shared this because it is free training, and who doesn’t want to know about that?
