  • DigiCert and Utimaco work on securing the future of IoT from quantum computing threats through collaboration with Microsoft

Proof of concept lays a foundation for quantum-resistant digital certificates for IoT devices

REDMOND, Washington, LEHI, Utah, AACHEN, Germany (February 12, 2019) — Today, DigiCert, Inc., the world’s leading provider of TLS/SSL, IoT and PKI solutions; Utimaco, one of the world’s top three Hardware Security Module providers; and Microsoft Research, a leader in quantum-safe cryptography, announced a successful test implementation of the “Picnic” algorithm, with digital certificates used to encrypt, authenticate and provide integrity for connected devices commonly referred to as the Internet of Things (IoT). This proof of concept provides a path toward a full solution, currently in development, that will protect IoT devices from future threats quantum computing could pose to today’s widely used cryptographic algorithms.

Currently, most IoT devices use RSA and ECC to protect confidentiality, integrity and authenticity for device identities and communication. Experts from the security community, including Dr. Brian LaMacchia from Microsoft Research, predict that large-scale quantum computers capable of breaking RSA and ECC public-key cryptography will exist within the next 10 to 15 years. Although this might seem like a long time away, many devices such as connected cars, smart homes, connected cities, connected medical devices and other critical infrastructures will either live longer than this or will take longer to update.

“DigiCert, Microsoft Research and Utimaco are collaborating today to solve tomorrow’s problem of defending connected devices and their networks against the new security threats that the implementation of quantum computers will unleash,” says Avesta Hojjati, Head of DigiCert Labs, the company’s R&D unit. “Together, we are leading the market with development of hybrid certificates that inject quantum-resistant algorithms alongside RSA and ECC to ensure long-term protection.”

The certificates are issued by DigiCert using the Picnic quantum-safe digital signature algorithm developed by Microsoft Research. To implement this algorithm and issue certificates, DigiCert has used an Utimaco Hardware Security Module. The full solution, in development, would provide quantum-safe digital certificate issuance and secure key management, helping companies future-proof their IoT deployments.

“The cooperation between DigiCert, Microsoft Research and Utimaco will help organizations implement secure and future-proof IoT products that are protected against the potential security threats of quantum computing,” said DigiCert CTO Dan Timpson.

Enterprises will be able to cost-effectively deploy these solutions at any scale. Further, these companies will provide solutions and tools to manufacturers of IoT devices to remain prepared for quantum threats. The goal is to keep the sensitive information and high-value assets safe.

“DigiCert, Utimaco and Microsoft’s successful test implementation provides a fundamental building block for the implementation of quantum-safe solutions,” said Dr. Thorsten Grötker, CTO at Utimaco. “Using these solutions, IoT manufacturers and other large organizations can innovate and develop products that are well prepared against coming quantum threats.”

Brian LaMacchia, Distinguished Engineer and Head of the Security and Cryptography Group at Microsoft Research, said, “The work that Microsoft Research is doing with DigiCert and Utimaco is important to develop quantum-secure cryptographic algorithms, protocols and solutions today so that in the near future enterprises will be able to transition to and deploy quantum-safe cryptography. Working to ensure that their solutions are cryptographically agile will help companies avoid expensive and unscalable security practices to protect their IoT devices against future security threats.”

  • ShiftLeft Raises $20 Million Series B Funding to Accelerate Adoption of Automated Application Security

Thomvest leads round with participation from Sinewave, Bain Capital Ventures and Mayfield; new advisory board includes prominent members of security and development community

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Feb 12, 2019 – ShiftLeft™ Inc., an innovator in application-specific cloud security, today announced it has raised $20 million in Series B funding. This latest round, led by Thomvest Ventures and joined by new investor SineWave Ventures as well as existing investors Bain Capital Ventures and Mayfield, comes less than 18 months after the company announced its first round of $9.3 million, bringing the total raised to nearly $30 million. The company is also announcing the addition of Jim Sortino, who previously held executive roles at Trend Micro and Dome9 Security (acquired by Checkpoint), as vice president of worldwide sales.

The company is using these funds to drive broader adoption of its code-informed runtime protection by expanding the breadth of its product portfolio, application coverage and global sales and marketing initiatives.

Software is rapidly becoming the driver of innovation. From internal enterprise applications to connected systems and devices in markets such as automotive, HVAC and electronics, many industries now compete on the advantages and benefits their software delivers. Every facet of modern life has been impacted by software and the data collected has expanded massively. Traditional application security approaches simply cannot scale.

“We are excited to lead ShiftLeft’s Series B financing. The company has an impressive team, led by CEO, Manish Gupta. ShiftLeft provides intelligent automation of code security, which addresses a major pain point for the CISOs of modern enterprises: to protect applications and data,” said Umesh Padval, venture partner at Thomvest Ventures. “ShiftLeft’s unique architecture provides a prioritized list of vulnerabilities with the least number of false positives and detailed vulnerability information, which helps developers remediate rapidly. A high-performance runtime solution that can protect applications in production empowers security teams to embrace automation as the solution which integrates seamlessly into the CI/CD [continuous integration/continuous delivery] workflow of an organization.”

From containers and microservices to cloud and open source, a vast array of forces are rapidly changing and accelerating application development and deployment. This investment underscores both the importance of ensuring security despite this complex landscape, and ShiftLeft’s unique ability to empower application security teams to protect the enterprise. Unlike traditional application security approaches, which are focused on external threats and rely on manual efforts to triage inaccurate alerts, ShiftLeft is the first to use code analysis to deeply understand application vulnerabilities, and create a virtual security perimeter to detect and protect every application version against malicious or unauthorized activity targeted at those vulnerabilities.

“Security has always been paramount, but traditional code analysis tools didn’t integrate into our CI/CD pipeline, created too many false positives and were just too slow,” said Harjot Gill, general manager of Nutanix Epoch. “The accuracy and speed of ShiftLeft enables Nutanix Epoch to automatically secure every release without slowing down new feature development.”

According to Patricia Muoio, partner at SineWave and former chief of the NSA’s Trusted System Group, “We were particularly impressed by ShiftLeft’s combination of software assurance with runtime monitoring. This unique ability to not only automate code security, but also deliver the analytics that helps DevOps organizations understand, confirm and prioritize vulnerability patching enables enterprises to get ahead of threats and truly changes the game in cyber security.”

As part of its growth initiative, ShiftLeft has also created an advisory board of prominent security and development thought leaders, including:

    • Bob Flores, former CTO of the Central Intelligence Agency
    • Craig Rosen, CISO of AppDynamics
    • Shahar Ben Hador, CIO of Exabeam
    • Aaron McKeown, head of security engineering and architecture at Xero
    • Manish Arya, founder and CTO of Tavant
    • Yonatan Ryabinski, chief enterprise architect at Vanguard

    ShiftLeft Quotes

“Our founding vision is that application security needs to be a seamless part of the development process, not an afterthought,” said Manish Gupta, CEO and co-founder of ShiftLeft. “The problem has long been inaccurate tools and a heavily manual process, leaving security and development teams frustrated and applications vulnerable. ShiftLeft completely upends this paradigm, delivering automated and customized protection for every software release, and the analytics dev teams need to improve on the overall security posture.”

“I’ve seen organizations struggle through a reactive, threat-focused security posture, resulting in overworked security teams and frequent breaches,” said Enrique Salem, partner at Bain Capital Ventures and former CEO of Symantec. “Yet ShiftLeft gets at the root problem – vulnerable software – by automating the process of accurately and rapidly analyzing and plugging vulnerabilities in the applications themselves. It’s exciting to be an investor in a company that is meaningfully helping security teams by reducing the overall attack surface and providing direct root-cause insight for developers.”

“Every modern company has become a software company, making application security vital,” said Ursheet Parikh, partner at Mayfield. “So it’s no surprise security is daily news: as the volume and pace of new applications has skyrocketed, the number of vulnerabilities has exploded. The ability to customize security for each version of every application is what drew us to ShiftLeft, and why we think the company promises to have a remarkable impact on the overall market.”

    About ShiftLeft

ShiftLeft is a continuous application security platform, purpose-built for the modern software development life cycle. It combines next-generation static code analysis (to quickly and accurately identify vulnerabilities) with application instrumentation (to protect the application) in an automated workflow. • Open Mainframe Project Advances Modern Mainframe with Production Ready Zowe 1.0

Less than 6 months after launch, this new Zowe release provides mainframes with new, intuitive, cloud-like interfaces

SAN FRANCISCO, February 11, 2019 – The Open Mainframe Project (OMP) announced today that Zowe, an open source software framework for the mainframe that strengthens integration with modern enterprise applications, is now production ready less than six months after launching. Any enterprise or solution developer can access the Zowe 1.0 source code or convenience build and incorporate it into their products or services with the agility and scalability of a cloud platform.

Hosted by The Linux Foundation, the Open Mainframe Project is comprised of business and academic leaders within the mainframe community that collaborate to develop shared tool sets and resources. OMP launched Zowe, the first-ever open source project based on z/OS, last August to serve as an integration platform for the next generation of tools for administration, management and development on z/OS mainframes.

Zowe 1.0 consists of core technologies enabling modern interfaces for web applications on z/OS, a new command line interface and expansion of platform REST API capabilities. This makes the z/OS environment more “cloud-like” and aims to improve integration in hybrid cloud environments.

The Zowe framework provides interoperability and uses the latest web technologies among products and solutions from multiple vendors. It helps enable developers to use the familiar, industry-standard, open source tools to access mainframe resources and services. Since launch, there has been a huge community response with more than 1,700 beta downloads, 700 +members of the project’s communication tool (220+ daily active users) and more than 50 committers.

“Mainframes are the foundation of businesses in every industry,” said John Mertic, Director of Program Management for the Linux Foundation and Open Mainframe Project. “Zowe breathes new life into mainframes and offers innovative possibilities for next generation applications. With Zowe 1.0, we’re developing secure, reliable and scalable computing that will ensure sustainability of mainframes for many years to come.”

With the ever-increasing deployment of hybrid architectures, mainframes need to manage a bigger volume, variety and velocity of data and transactions. OMP is dedicated to modernizing the platform for mission critical apps and blockchain – where fast data access, transactional scale, and the highest level of trust are required. The Zowe framework is part of this mission as it will enable an ecosystem of software solutions intended to provide a simple, intuitive environment for a variety of IT professionals performing administrative, development, test and operation tasks on z/OS, and help onboard the next generation of mainframe users.

Zowe 1.0 represents a major milestone on the project’s technical roadmap. Key features for this release include:

    ○      Functional extensions, integration between different 3rd party products and applications

    ○      Updated docs that define extension points and provide sample applications and tutorials on how to integrate with or extend the Zowe framework

    ○      New pre-install scripts that can help identify and verify the appropriate pre-reqs prior to beginning the Zowe installation process

    ○      A Zowe API Mediation Layer that provides the foundation for a single point of access for mainframe service REST APIs and an optional single sign-on experience that leverages an organization’s existing System Authorization Facility, or SAF protocols, enabling programs and applications to use system authorization services to control access to different resources

Additionally, Zowe earned the Core Infrastructure Initiative (CII) Best Practice Badge, which means it is following best practices and conformance in driving secure software development and governance in open source. The Core Infrastructure Initiative is a collaborative, pre-emptive program and approach for strengthening cyber security that is widely supported by industry leaders like IBM, AWS, Google, VMWare and Cisco. The CII Best Practices Badge is a rigorous assessment of an open source project’s processes and infrastructure; other open source projects that has achieved the badge include Linux, Kubernetes and Node to name a few.

The Open Mainframe Project will be on-site next week at THINK 2019 with several speaking sessions about Zowe and a happy hour. Visit the OMP website to learn more.
