IBM Webcast Nov 12: Use Discovery to accelerate testing and virtualization

Many of today’s business applications offer a multitude of services (APIs) across many different technologies. These same applications also reach out into a web of already-existing services in order to retrieve and update information necessary to successfully deliver the end to end business processes. In many cases, these applications are being built by multiple development teams distributed around the world with architectural approaches and middleware changing over time and yet we point test teams at the mere tip of the iceberg and say, “Test it!”. Testers know the benefits service-based testing and service virtualization bring but to successfully use these capabilities they first have to understand not only the application’s architecture but also the way in which it communicates with everything around it. Finding this information can be a forensic-like exercise; even if there is documentation there is only one real truth – the environment itself. Watching and interrogating the real systems allows testers to understand what’s really happening under the surface, sometimes with surprising results.

  • Achieving business agility: a webinar with Chef and Rally Software

Achieving business agility: a webinar with Chef and Rally Software

We recently hosted our first devopsy.kinsta.cloud webinar with Chef and Rally Software.

Using DevOps to Achieve Business Agility

In today’s digital economy, leading companies are turning to software to deliver new services in response to customer demand and competition. Technology can enable and expedite innovation, but it requires business leaders, software developers and IT operations teams to closely collaborate around shared goals, at new speeds, and with the flexibility to change on a dime to customer needs and market shifts. In this webinar, Rally Software, a leading global provider of enterprise-class software and services solutions, will discuss how it has institutionalized DevOps and how it uses Chef to support its speed-focused approach to delivering business agility. You’ll learn firsthand how Rally automates its virtualized infrastructure, accelerates application development and tightens customer feedback loops.

    Speakers include:

    •  Jonathan Chauncey, developer at Rally Software. He’s been involved in Web application development for almost 10 years, four of which have been at Rally. His technical interests include: automation, testing, clojure, Ruby and search.

    • Jeff Smith, development manager at Rally Software. He’s been involved in Web application development for almost 20 years, 11 of which have been at Rally. His technical interests include: test automation, continuous deployment and infrastructure automation.

    • Colin Campbell, director of patterns and practices at Chef. He has worked on advanced model-based testing and analysis techniques for a number of years in industry. He is currently involved in developing and documenting Chef best practices and design patterns.

Here is the recorded version of this great webinar:

  • What’s new @DevOps.com

    What’s new @DevOps.com

All of us here at devopsy.kinsta.cloud have been very busy. In addition to adding some new writers and great new content, we have been working “outside the 4 walls of the website”.  Here is an update on what’s new:

CampDevOps-logo-align_left1. Camp DevOps – We held our first Camp DevOps event last week in beautiful Boulder, Colorado at the University of Colorado, Boulder Campus.  It was a great event featuring a lot of great sessions.  Sanjeev Sharma of IBM, author of DevOps for Dummies (and a devopsy.kinsta.cloud contributor) kicked things off with a great keynote. Andi Mann of CA had a great talk on implanting DevOps from the top down. Rajat Bhargava and Topher Marie of JumpCloud also had some great insights in their sessions. Rich Mogull’s “KickaaS Security” session was a great look at the top things you need in terms of security.  Another very popular track was Craftsy VP of engineering, Matthew Boeckman’s using S3 and Glacier for backup. There were some other great sessions but I can mention them all here. You can check out the Camp DevOps website for the full agenda.

We will be conducting more Camp DevOps in the near future in cities throughout the US.  Some will be in conjunction with larger events or conferences within conferences, others will stand alone events. Stay tuned for more details.

I was asked the question of whether Camp DevOps competes with DevOps Days. Short answer, no. We support DevOps Days and the culture they represent. Camp DevOps shares with DevOps Days the desire to advance DevOps, but takes a slightly different tack.  We will have both highly technical, as well as business orientated tracks. Camp DevOps will feature both learning on DevOps culture, as well as tools. We will also be adding more exclusive Camp DevOps activities to the events in the future.

    gluelogo

    2. Gluecon 2014 – Camp DevOps Boulder was held in conjunction with Gluecon in nearby Broomfield.  Gluecon was fantastic this year and also featured a full DevOps lineup. I was the moderator of the DevOps tracks on day one. Again some real quality presentations on Ansible, Saltstack and more. We will be posting video here soon.

Look for more announcements regarding Gluecon and Camp DevOps soon.

     Webinars:

Compuware APM – I was invited as a guest on a webinar by CompuwareAPM in an intro to DevOps. The webinar was hosted by Steve Wilson. It was a good conversation about several interesting areas of DevOps.  The recorded version of the webinar will be available shortly and we will post a link on our events page.

cloudpassageSecDevOps – I am joining Andrew Storms of CloudPassage to discuss SecDevOps, the new black. You can register for this here. Andrew is a really bright fellow that is very well known in the security space and this promises to be a great webinar!
