Tricentis Acquires Waldo to Further Advance Mobile Testing

Tricentis has acquired Waldo as part of an effort to expand the scope of the automated testing capabilities it provides for mobile applications.

Waldo adds a software-as-a-service (SaaS) platform that provides IT teams with a no-code tool for generating mobile application tests. Waldo uses a virtual environment to simulate iOS and Android devices in a way that eliminates the need for physical devices to conduct tests. Instead, DevOps teams record their applications and then use the no-code tools to generate tests directly from within a browser.

Tricentis CTO Mav Turner said Tricentis opted to acquire Waldo because it makes it simpler for IT teams to generate tests that can be integrated across a DevOps workflow.

There currently is a lot of debate over how far application testing should be shifted left toward developers. In theory, the more developers test applications themselves the fewer issues there should be once an application is deployed in a production environment. However, there is still going to be a need for dedicated testing teams to conduct tests across multiple stages of the application development process to ensure quality, noted Turner.

The difference is more of those tests can include edge use cases that previously there would not have been enough time to conduct, he added.

Earlier this year, Tricentis added the ability to test native iOS and Android applications to its Testim software-as-a-service (SaaS) platform as part of an effort to extend the reach of that platform to applications that run natively on a mobile device.

Testing mobile applications is more critical than ever because the cost of failure—in terms of impact on the business—is now much higher as more organizations depend on software to drive business processes. The challenge is that many of these app developers don’t have a software engineering mindset, so they need testing platforms that automatically create and run tests on their behalf in a way that can be customized for specific use cases.

Over time, the quality of applications should steadily improve as many of the low-level mistakes that developers make are eliminated. That should improve everything from application security to the user experience as applications are continuously updated.

In addition, organizations that embed testing within DevOps workflows are steadily reducing the number of issues that need to be addressed before applications are deployed.

Hopefully, as more artificial intelligence (AI) is applied to the testing process, the number of reasons tests are not run as frequently as they should be will steadily decline. Today, it is still too difficult for many developers to author tests, so they don’t conduct as many as they should. Of course, many of them also simply run out of time when writing the code that drives the application takes longer than anticipated.

One way or another, developers will run out of excuses for not running tests as accountability for code quality increases.

  • Tricentis Extends Mobile Testing Reach

    Tricentis Extends Mobile Testing Reach

Tricentis has added the ability to test native iOS and Android applications to its Testim software-as-a-service (SaaS) platform.

Previously, the Testim platform was designed to test web applications, but is now being extended as organizations build and deploy more native mobile applications. Capabilities of the Testim Mobile platform include codeless authoring of mobile tests to eliminate the need to write and maintain Appium, Espresso or XCUITest scripts and the ability to set up, configure and manage mobile devices in minutes using the Tricentis Mobile Agent.

Additionally, applications can be uploaded to the cloud to enable collaboration across testing teams as they opt to run tests on real or virtual devices. DevOps team can also customize tests with JavaScript, branch tests, and run tests from a scheduler or continuous integration (CI) build.

Tricentis CTO Mav Turner said Tricentis is moving to implement a consistent set of mobile testing services across its entire portfolio of testing platforms now that mobile applications are equal, first-class citizens alongside web applications. The primary driver of that shift has been the COVID-19 pandemic, which saw more organizations relying on external-facing mobile applications to engage customers, partners and employees working remotely, he added.

Testing those applications is more critical than ever because the cost of failure—in terms of impact to the business—is now much higher as more organizations depend on software to drive business processes, noted Turner.

The goal is to make it simpler to test these applications as they are being developed to ensure quality, he added. The challenge is that many developers don’t have a software engineering mindset. Hence, they need to rely more on testing platforms infused with artificial intelligence to discover issues relating to, for example, scalability and security, said Turner.

Most organizations are trying to shift more responsibility for testing toward developers as part of an effort to remediate issues earlier in the software development life cycle. It’s more challenging for developers to remediate issues after an application has been developed simply because they have lost context. Testing platforms infused with AI capabilities make it easier for developers to identify issues at the time they are writing code. In the future, Tricentis expects to take advantage of generative AI platforms to make it easier to author tests using a set of best practices that can be easily reused, noted Turner.

That approach doesn’t necessarily eliminate the need for a dedicated quality assessment review, but it does allow testing teams to focus more of their time and effort on testing the application experience versus identifying lower-level errors that many developers routinely make.

Over time, the quality of applications should steadily improve as many of the low-level mistakes that developers make are eliminated. That should improve everything from application security to the user experience as applications are continuously updated. In the meantime, organizations that embed testing within DevOps workflows are steadily reducing the number of issues that need to be addressed just before applications are supposed to be deployed.

  • Tricentis Expands Scope of Cloud-Based Testing Tools

Tricentis Expands Scope of Cloud-Based Testing Tools

Tricentis this week extended a suite of cloud-based testing tools that promise to make it simpler to both develop cloud-native and mobile applications and migrate existing applications to the cloud.

New capabilities added to the portfolio include integrations for cloud-based planning tools and a wider range of testing capabilities for mobile applications. DevOps teams can now, for example, deploy Tricentis qTest platform for managing the testing process within a Kubernetes cluster. Tricentis has also made it simpler to configure and update its Tosca suite of application testing tools.

In addition, Tricentis added additional capabilities for testing SAP applications running in the cloud that previously were deployed in an on-premises IT environment.

Martin Klaus, vice president of product marketing for Tricentis, said the goal is to make it simpler for DevOps teams to integrate continuous testing for various types of applications within their DevOps workflows. DevOps teams have the option of invoking the Tricentis suite of testing tools via a software-as-a-service (SaaS) platform or deploying them on a cloud platform themselves using templates provided by Tricentis.

While developers are clearly getting more involved in testing, Klaus said it’s critical for testing capabilities to be integrated within a DevOps pipeline. Each developer is typically only working on a component of a larger application. Unless testing is conducted on an end-to-end basis, an organization won’t be able to determine the real quality of the application experience before deploying software in a production environment, he noted.

As a result, the decision about what tools to use as part of a continuous testing process is now being made by DevOps team leaders rather than individual developers, added Klaus.

Ultimately, the goal is to automate as much of the continuous testing process as possible. Achieving that goal will require increased reliance on artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, though to varying degrees, said Klaus. Those capabilities, however, are not likely to eliminate the need for dedicated testing professionals; instead, AI will enable those teams to more efficiently test increasingly complex application environments, he added.

In fact, it’s becoming practically impossible for testers to manually inspect every element of an application without the help of, for example, algorithms that apply computer vision to analyze a user interface, noted Klaus. There will always be higher-level tasks that require a human, but AI technologies will play a significant role in enabling testing at scale as organizations start to build more applications, he added.

In the meantime, it’s clear that there’s a lot more riding on testing as organizations continue to launch digital business transformation initiatives. In many cases, organizations only get one chance to convince end users that a new application being rolled out is better than the processes they previously employed. As such, the need to streamline testing within the context of a DevOps workflow has become critical—there is little tolerance for bottlenecks that slow down the rate at which applications now need to be built and deployed.

  • Tricentis Aquires Neotys to Gain Load Testing Tools

Tricentis Aquires Neotys to Gain Load Testing Tools

Tricentis announced today it has acquired Neotys as part of an effort to expand the scope of its tools portfolio into the realm of load testing. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Neotys provides application testing teams with automatic test design and maintenance, user behavior simulation and root cause analysis capabilities using a set of tools that are designed to be integrated within a DevOps toolchain.

Sandeep Johri, Tricentis CEO, said the Neotys platform will extend the scope of Tricentis’ Tosca testing platform that today enables DevOps teams to employ machine learning algorithms to test the functions within an application.

In general, Johri said there’s now a lot more focus on load testing, thanks in part to the rise of microservices-based applications that are starting to be deployed at scale. DevOps teams are, first, trying to identify, as early as possible, a single point of failure that might bring down an application. Second, modern microservices-based applications are designed to degrade gracefully when there is no single point of failure. Identifying what issues are leading to that degradation can be challenging, given all the dependencies that might exist within a microservices-based application.

Neotys claims to have more than 600 enterprise customers, including BNP Paribas, Dell, Lufthansa, McKesson and Verizon. Tricentis claims to have more than 1,800 customers, including McKesson, Accenture, Nationwide Insurance, Allianz, Telstra, Rockwell Automation, Moët Hennessy-Louis Vuitton (LVMH PCIS) and Vodafone. The acquisition of Neotys will reduce the number of vendors that an organization needs to engage to gain access to a portfolio of testing tools, Johri noted.

As IT organizations embrace DevOps best practices, more responsibility for application testing is clearly shifting left toward developers. However, it’s not quite clear to what degree that shift is either eliminating or reducing the need for dedicated application testing teams at the back end of the application development process.

At the same time, many rote testing tasks are now being automated using machine learning algorithms. Those algorithms don’t completely eliminate the need for humans to test applications, but they do significantly reduce the testing time required. They should also create more time for developers to collaborate with one another to review more complex interactions within an application that machine learning algorithms are unlikely to be able to automate any time soon.

The amount of time organizations devote to application testing has always been constrained. As deployment deadlines approach, often the first thing that gets reduced is the amount of time allocated to application testing. In many cases, developers deliberately don’t address some known issues until the first or second update to an application that has already been deployed in a production environment.

Of course, integrating application testing within a DevOps process enables organizations to identify more potential issues earlier when they are easier and less expensive to fix. The challenge has always been getting developers to appreciate the value of testing early and often in the application development process.

Regardless of how application testing continues to evolve in the age of DevOps the one thing that is certain is no matter how automated it gets developers are going to be more involved than ever.

  • Tricentis Releases New Research on The Rise of Enterprise Application Testing

Mountain View, Calif. – Nov. 17, 2020 – Tricentis, the world’s #1 testing platform for modern cloud and enterprise applications, has released new research in partnership with Nimbus Ninety that highlights a mounting imperative to extend modern quality strategies across the enterprise application landscape, from SAP to Salesforce and beyond. The report, titled “The Rise of Enterprise Application Testing,” examines the market forces that have given rise to this trend and shares the strategies leading organizations have implemented to achieve continuous business innovation.

As digital disruption continues to fundamentally reshape the business landscape, enterprises are ramping up plans for cloud migration, DevOps transformation, and enterprise application modernization. As an organization’s digital core, enterprise applications build the foundations for wider digital transformation strategies and business process innovation at scale. But because major updates across these mission-critical applications pose significant risks to business continuity, testing is non-negotiable. For many organizations, testing has also represented the most significant delay in the process.

The average organization uses more than 900 applications today, according to MuleSoft’s 2020 Connectivity Benchmark, and a single business workflow might touch dozens of these applications via microservices and APIs. Testers must ensure none of those workflows are impacted when any one of these applications is updated. Tests must work across multiple technologies and interfaces – which are often evolving in parallel – and across a combination of on-premise, public, and private cloud environments.

“As the research highlights, traditional testing methods are no longer suitable for today’s complex, rapidly evolving IT landscapes,” said Chris Trueman, SVP of Product Management, Tricentis. “To meet increased demands on testing, technology leaders must extend the continuous testing processes that have transformed traditional software development across the enterprise application landscape.”

Drawing on interviews with enterprise testing and technology leaders from leading global enterprises, this report examines best practices that are helping organizations scale enterprise application testing to meet today’s business demands. Highlights include:

    ●        Extending Agile and DevOps principles across the enterprise application landscape

    ●        Enabling business users with domain expertise to contribute to testing

    ●        Using smart technologies to cover more business risk with less testing

    ●        Addressing the test automation skills gap

    ●        Developing processes that verify functionality before, during, and after a major upgrade or migration

  • Tricentis Introduces Next Generation AI-Powered Test Automation

Ushers in Next Era of Software Testing with Artificial Intelligence

Mountain View, Calif. — Oct. 20, 2020 — Tricentis, the world’s #1 testing platform for modern cloud and enterprise applications, today announced Vision AI, the core technology that will now power Tosca. Vision AI is the industry’s most advanced AI-based test design and automation technology which allows organizations to address the needs brought about by the increasing prevalence of cloud-native and enterprise application platforms.  This new AI-based approach marks the beginning of a new era of test automation.

Test automation technology has evolved from script-based, to model-based, and is now moving towards AI-based approaches. This new approach will enable agile and DevOps teams to build automated test cases much earlier in the development process – starting with only a mockup or a low-fidelity prototype. Using self-healing capabilities to adapt tests as applications change from sprint to sprint removes bottlenecks and delivers software innovation faster. For the first time, test-driven development can now be achieved end-to-end at the business process level.

Tricentis’ AI-driven approach allows organizations to solve the following test automation challenges:

    • Heavy application customization.  Current test automation solutions don’t support both legacy and modern cloud-native technologies which require heavy customization and refactoring, resulting in increased costs spent on acquiring complex tools.
    • Support for virtual and remote applications. Whether due to regulation or other concerns, many teams are forced to rely on virtual or remote applications (i.e. Citrix, VMware, etc.). However, traditional test automation solutions do not work for remote or virtual applications, resulting in a reliance on manual testing.
    • Testing and test automation occur too late in the process. Traditionally, applications have had to be built before any test automation can be created. As a result, test teams are always a step behind developers and risk becoming a bottleneck to application delivery.

“Tricentis has been at the forefront of the testing evolution and is now ushering in the next era of test automation powered by artificial intelligence,” said Sandeep Johri, CEO of Tricentis. “The introduction of Tricentis’ next generation AI technology will allow organizations to deliver innovation faster and at lower costs, while also rapidly modernizing and transforming their application landscape to bring more value to the business.”

With the launch of Tosca 14, Tricentis delivers on a comprehensive strategy to embed AI capabilities across the portfolio in order to take the pain out of test design, execution, and maintenance for testers. Tosca also improves the business value of enterprise and cloud-native applications by taking the risk, time and expense out of the delivery process. This product strategy focuses primarily on three technology areas:

    • Vision AI, included with Tosca 14 – Automatically recognizes and identifies visual user interface elements and controls across any form factor the same way humans do to aid in the automated generation of robust test cases. Can also be trained on any unique and complex controls by a business user.
    • Risk AI, delivered by LiveCompare – Detects the most at-risk objects and select the right set of tests to minimize the business and technical impact of code changes.
    • Self-healing AI, part of Tosca 14 – Adapts test cases and adjusts test plans as applications evolve with each iteration.

“We have been struggling with automating our virtualized applications for a long time and are looking forward to seeing how Vision AI can automate applications across our platforms, even if they are behind a Citrix environment,” said Markus Bonner, Test Manager, Vienna Insurance Group. “We evaluated a number of vendors promising to make testing simpler however nothing came even close to Tricentis’ AI approach to solving our problems.”
