  • StackPath Unveils New EdgeEngine Capabilities

Serverless Computing Service Grows Even More Powerful for Developers

DALLAS — April 3, 2019 — StackPath, the world’s first secure edge platform, today announced new features and tools for StackPath EdgeEngine, the company’s simple yet powerful serverless computing service that lets developers run code at the cloud’s edge without a server, virtual machine, or container. The new features include an EdgeEngine CLI tool, sandbox, and WebAssembly (WASM) support, making it easier for developers to create, test, customize, and control EdgeEngine scripts.

“We’re focused on helping developers easily build and innovate their solutions on the edge,” said Ben Gabler, StackPath Chief Product Officer. “EdgeEngine is built on modern technology and developers expect modern tooling to go with it. That includes opening up the language support beyond just JavaScript and providing tools to make getting on the edge even easier.

StackPath has released three key improvements for the EdgeEngine:

    • EdgeEngine CLI tool: The EdgeEngine CLI tool allows developers to easily change scripts on the fly. Not only are new scripts/updates propagated to the entire Edge within 1-2 seconds, but with the CLI tool developers can now maintain version control in their existing CI/CD pipelines. The EdgeEngine CLI tool is available at https://github.com/stackpath/edgeengine-cli.
    • EdgeEngine Sandbox: The EdgeEngine Sandbox allows developers to create, test, and revise scripts before they are deployed to the edge, a critical step before pushing real-time business logic in front of an edge delivery solution. The EdgeEngine Sandbox is available at https://sandbox.edgeengine.io.
    • WebAssembly Support: EdgeEngine now supports WebAssembly (WASM), enabling developers to write scripts at the edge in more than 20 different languages, including C, C++, Rust, Go, and many more. A growing set of examples for using WASM with EdgeEngine is available at https://github.com/stackpath/edgeengine-examples.

“As developers and users of our own technology, we constantly have ideas for making our products even more powerful and easier to use,” said Gabler. “Our team is at work creating more additional developer tools for our other Edge Computing products, such as containers and VMs, as well as our Edge Services including CDN, DNS, WAF, and monitoring.”

  • StackPath Releases New Edge Computing VMs

Delivers Increased Edge Computing Customization and Control

DALLAS — March 19, 2019 — StackPath, the world’s first secure edge platform, today announced new StackPath Edge Computing Virtual Machine (VM) options, providing developers increased customization and control over their edge computing environments. StackPath Edge Computing VMs can be deployed in any or all StackPath edge locations around the world in one click or API call. StackPath customers can then directly connect to each VM via SSH to further configure the OS and install and manage their own software.

“Every workload is different. Developers need to be able to tailor edge computing to fit their application’s profile,” said Lance Crosby, StackPath co-founder and Chief Executive Officer. “That’s why we offer a full-range of edge computing types. And with the release of additional VM capabilities, developers can truly select or mix edge computing types to strike their ideal balance of performance, flexibility, and management.”

Today’s release introduces seven VM sizes spanning a range of CPU and RAM combinations, each with 25GB of SSD-based persistent storage. Like StackPath Edge Computing Containers, StackPath Edge Computing VMs feature:

    • Streamlined setup
Customers simply select the type, size, number, and location of instances, via CLI or the StackPath customer portal.
    • Global deployment
Instances are instantly deployed in all selected locations.
    • Anycast IP space
Customers can also choose to allocate an Anycast IP address to the instances to load balance and route traffic down the shortest path to end users.

With 45 StackPath edge locations worldwide, developers are able to put their workloads closer to more end users than centralized public cloud providers can, for higher security and as much as 2.6 times faster response times.

StackPath Edge Computing VMs deliver additional customization and control over the edge computing environment. With StackPath containers, developers only need to upload the image they want deployed in their containers and the platform takes care of the rest. With StackPath Edge Computing VMs, customers choose whether they want the platform to deploy their VM with CentOS or Ubuntu installed using best-practices for security and performance. After deployment, the customer then has full access to each VM via SSH, to customize the OS and install any software they desire, leveraging 25GB of persistent storage included with every size VM.

This flexibility is critical to a wide range of organizations and use cases, particularly companies with legacy applications that are not optimized or suited to run in containers. They can move their workloads right to the edge without the time and financial costs of redevelopment.

“We’ve seen incredible demand for StackPath Edge Computing since our initial release last month. Every day customers share new use cases and application ideas with our team. That’s inspired us to iterate and advance the services even faster,” said Ben Gabler, StackPath Chief Product Officer. “The flexibility of our VMs really expands the possibilities for what developers will do at the edge, and will accelerate the time to market for those innovations.”

StackPath Edge Computing services include the aforementioned containers and VMs and StackPath EdgeEngine, a serverless script engine that provides always-on computing at the edge.

StackPath Edge Computing Virtual Machines start at $0.10/VM/hour, with same pricing for each StackPath edge location and 25GB of persistent storage included with each instance (see full pricing details online). The VMs can be self-service ordered and managed on-demand—get started in the StackPath Customer Portal today, or contact the expert StackPath sales and solutions team to learn more.

  • StackPath Launches EdgeEngine Serverless Computing

Create Your Own Services with Computing at the Edge

DALLAS—November 27, 2018—StackPath, a leading platform of secure edge services, today announced StackPath EdgeEngine™, a simple yet powerful serverless computing service that lets developers run code at the cloud’s edge without a server, virtual machine, or container.

“The edge is the new frontier in cloud computing,” said Lance Crosby, StackPath co-founder and CEO. “EdgeEngine gives developers the power to customize workloads at the edge without the burden or overhead of managing infrastructure. It’s just the first in a number of edge computing solutions we have in the works, and an unprecedented opportunity for businesses to control how data and traffic is handled right up to the point it reaches their end users, or where it hits their workloads.”

StackPath EdgeEngine is built on the Chrome V8 JavaScript engine and lets StackPath customers simply compose or paste scripts into the StackPath customer portal and assign them to routes on their delivery sites. The script is immediately deployed in all of StackPath’s advanced edge PoPs worldwide, ready to execute at the PoP closest to an end user whenever the designated script URL is called. The service is currently available as an add-on to StackPath CDN and Edge Delivery packages but will soon be available for use with any StackPath service, or as a standalone, and will support a wide number of languages.

“Having the ability to create a dynamic user-experience at the edge is a total game changer,” said Ben Gabler, StackPath Senior Vice President, Product. “At StackPath, we can’t always predict every feature or use case that we will support, but today that’s no longer an issue. With the power of EdgeEngine the customer possibilities are endless.”

EdgeEngine is ideal for a wide range of use cases, including:

    • Delivering personalized, dynamic and unique content based on request data: Modify end user experience directly from the edge instead of relying on client-side execution
    • Customizing security measures: Deploy scripts that execute before a request reaches content, such as blocking or allowing WordPress Administration
    • Building an API entry point or entire API gateway: Create scripts that designate specific routes (as many as desired) to a delivery site
    • Reducing total cost of operations: Handle computing tasks at the edge instead of sending them back to the origin, reducing origin compute workloads and data transfer
    • Improving overall end-user experiences: Process data from and reply to end users from the nearest edge PoP, lowering response time and enabling near-real-time network applications

EdgeEngine is available now for existing StackPath customers. To begin using it, StackPath customers can simply add it to a CDN or Edge Delivery stack through the StackPath customer portal. EdgeEngine is competitively priced at $10/month per stack for 15M requests ($0.60 for each additional 1M requests) with no limit on number of scripts or delivery domains per stack, unlike competing serverless edge computing services.

  • StackPath Begins Providing Free Private SSL Certificates

Partnership with Sectigo (Comodo CA) helps developers secure websites and applications

DALLAS — November 5, 2018 — StackPath, a leading platform of secure edge services, today announced it has partnered with Sectigo, formerly Comodo CA, the global innovator of security solutions, to include private SSL certificates for no additional cost with StackPath content delivery network (CDN), web application firewall (WAF), and Edge Delivery subscriptions. StackPath customers can receive a private SSL certificate for each CDN or WAF site they create on the StackPath platform, ensuring their end users’ traffic is encrypted from the web browser to the content or web application.

“We’re on a mission to make the internet safe, and offering free SSL certificates is one of many ways we’re doing it,” said Ben Gabler, StackPath Senior VP of Product. “SSL encryption has long been expected on login forms and checkout pages, but today it’s essential to have SSL encryption for your entire website or application. It makes the internet more secure as a whole, as modern browsers warn users if an SSL certificate is not present.”

“Recently, Google began marking sites without SSL certificates as ‘not secure’, so it’s more important than ever for companies to ensure their sites are now protected,” said Tim Callan, Senior Fellow at Sectigo. “We are thrilled that our partnership with StackPath is helping make the internet safe for consumers, especially with the holiday shopping season and Black Friday right around the corner.”

The free private SSL certificates are an extension of StackPath Edge SSL suite, complementing the platform’s ability to provide shared SSL encryption or for customers to use third-party SSL certificates that they already own. StackPath Edge SSL serves the SSL certificates from StackPath edge nodes around the world, accelerating authentication, increasing end user security, and taking the burden of SSL authentication and validation off of a website, application, or cloud service’s origin servers.

New and existing StackPath customers can request their free private Edge SSL certificates through the StackPath customer portal. Private Edge SSL certificates are automatically renewed when they reach their expiration date; customers who already have third-party SSL certificates can request and use a free private Edge SSL server and no longer worry about keeping their certificates valid.

  • StackPath Launches Next Generation of Platform and Services Announces New Network, Customer Portal, Services and More to Push the Cloud’s Edge Further

DALLAS—July 2, 2018—To transform internet security and the cloud’s edge, StackPath, the world’s only secure edge platform, today unveiled multiple launches, updates, and upgrades. This includes:
a new network of highly-scalable, advanced edge Points of Presence (PoPs)

    new secure edge services
a new customer portal with self-service signup and simplified service setup and management
a new platform model and pricing
new branding and corporate web site

“Our founding mission is to make the Internet safe. The cloud’s edge is the strategic location for doing just that, but it’s been overlooked and under-developed. It has to evolve,” said Lance Crosby, StackPath co-founder and CEO. “That’s why I’m proud to unveil StackPath 2.0. It’s more than just the next generation of our platform and services. It brings, for the first time, cloud-scale and design all the way to the edge, transforming this critical dimension of the internet.”

Since its founding in late 2015, StackPath has acquired six companies with key security and edge-centric technologies. StackPath 2.0 marks the integration and advancement of these technologies into a unified, frictionless platform that delivers multiple, inherently-secured edge services, including edge delivery (for CDN, API acceleration, file distribution, media streaming, and more), a web application firewall, managed DNS, website monitoring, and DDoS mitigation. The design and implementation of the new platform also paves the way for StackPath to enable customers to use its services and technologies to build their own innovative edge services and solutions.

“StackPath is building for the future in a sector that is undergoing significant change,” said Philbert Shih, research analyst and managing director at Structure Research. “There are many CDNs and traditional infrastructure service providers that were built in a way and at a time when things like scalability and extensibility were less of a factor. Today, it is crucial to build a platform in a way that is easy to upgrade, scalable and allows new products to be built on top. The openness and flexibility to partner with third parties is a big part of the overall value proposition as well. This is the direction StackPath is moving in as it looks to build a unified secure cloud infrastructure services delivery platform”.

    New Network
The new StackPath network was built from the ground up using cloud design principles that until now have not been used by edge service providers. These include extensive automation, virtualization capabilities, and industry-leading computing, storage, and networking configurations. Moreover, each StackPath network point of presence features multiple connections with tier-1 network carriers , premium peering, and a full infrastructure deployment—as opposed to other providers’ PoPs that might be just a single collocated server. The result is a global platform that is more secure, performant, scalable, and reliable, capable of delivering every secure edge service from every location and providing rapid deployment of future services.

    Key details include:
    •         40 Tbps of global bandwidth on a single platform, with additional planned by end of year
    •         45 advanced secure edge PoPs in prime locations, with aggressive expansion scheduled
    •         full hardware acceleration capabilities deployed in every node

“We’ve focused on scaling the technologies that came from each acquisition and deploying them in a virtualized, flexible manner. When you look at other edge platforms, they’re a Frankenstein of old, single-service architectures,” said Wen Temitim, StackPath CTO. “We insisted on creating an architecture that supports all of our services and technologies in a single platform that is extensible for all of the services we have in the works. It’s the only way to deliver a better experience for our more than one million customers already on the platform, and establish the scalability needed to meet the threats of tomorrow.”

    New Secure Edge Services
Available today, StackPath has released new and expanded versions of the company’s secure edge services, as well as new services the company has not previously offered. These include:

    • New Content Delivery Network (CDN)
The new StackPath CDN consolidates the powerful features and performance of Highwinds’ enterprise-grade CDN; the speed, flexibility, and self-service features of MaxCDN and StackPath SecureCDN; and the built-in security features of SecureCDN such as platform-level DDoS protection and integrated WAF. While integrating the services, the delivery technology was further engineered to make it even more adaptable for developers’ wide and growing range of delivery needs beyond CDN, including API delivery, file/firmware distribution, and video delivery.
    • New Web Application Firewall (WAF)
The industry-leading StackPath WAF has been updated with even more advanced functionality, including a custom rules engine that allows WAF administrators to create and manage their own traffic management rules. In addition, for the first time, customers can use StackPath WAF with infrastructure and applications running outside of the company’s platform, providing StackPath protection for third -party services.
    • Managed DNS
StackPath now provides global, managed DNS for secure, fast, and reliable domain name resolution from the edge. Engineered in-house, StackPath DNS leverages the same global, geographically-distributed Anycast network as other StackPath services, running within the company’s new advanced infrastructure network. As with all StackPath services, the DNS service is easy to set up and configure, and inherently secure.
    • Monitoring
StackPath introduces a new monitoring service built on industry-leading technologies created by Server Density (Server Density joined StackPath in June of this year). At launch, the new service provides exceptional website monitoring to help customers maintain the best performance and end-user experiences, with the ability to choose one or many monitoring locations to finetune create customized monitoring maps. The service will grow to monitor additional endpoint types and include even more features as Server Density technologies are completely integrated into the StackPath platform in the coming weeks.

    New Customer Portal
StackPath has launched an all new customer portal that supports the cloud scale and speed of the new infrastructure network and makes it easier than ever for customers to manage StackPath accounts and services. It features intuitive, streamlined workflows that make setup and management simple, and for services to be configured and running immediately. Perhaps most important, the new portal is built on a modular application framework and fully leverages StackPath platform and service API, abstracting the web app from the services it manages. This architecture will significantly accelerate the time to market of future StackPath services and features.

“It doesn’t matter whether you are talking about services in the middle of the cloud or at the edge—developers demand control and they expect it to be fast and well-documented,” said Ben Gabler, StackPath VP of Product Engineering “That’s why we built everything in our platform API first. We have built the customer portal around the same customer-facing API to surface all that functionality in the simplest, easiest-to-use user interface imaginable.”

    New Platform Model and Pricing
A key dimension of the new StackPath platform and customer portal is “stacks,” a new way to deploy and manage StackPath services. A stack is a collection of one or more StackPath services, configured specifically for that stack’s use case, such as content delivery, API distribution, or even standalone WAF.

Simple workflows walk customers through creating and deploying their stacks. Services can be added to or removed from a stack at any time, or further customized, as needs change. Customers are able to build their own stack from the ground up, selecting and configuring their individual services. Or they can use a stack template, preconfigured to deploy multiple services, based on common use cases and best-practices security and performance configurations.

StackPath CDN, WAF, Managed DNS, and Monitoring are individually priced at $10/month, each with a generous level of included monthly consumption. At launch, three stack templates preconfigured for Edge Delivery are available, each including CDN, DNS, WAF, and Monitoring with bundled pricing starting at only $20/month. More stack templates will be introduced in the coming weeks.

All packages are available month-to-month and with cost-effective rates for additional consumption, with the first month of a single-service package or the $20/month Edge Delivery package free for new accounts. Customers that need StackPath services at significantly higher volumes than included in any of these packages are encouraged to contact StackPath sales for a custom quote.

MaxCDN, Highwinds, and StackPath SecureCDN Transitions
The StackPath platform now meets and exceeds the performance and capabilities of the legacy MaxCDN, Highwinds, and StackPath SecureCDN platforms and services. Starting today, new StackPath accounts will only be onboarded to the new platform. Existing MaxCDN, Highwinds, and SecureCDN customers’ services, pricing, and customer portals are unchanged; existing customers may continue using and accessing their services as before. Existing Highwinds accounts may add and access the new platform capabilities with their existing accounts (new services and functionality are available through the new customer portal). At a later date a seamless migration path will be provided for legacy MaxCDN and SecureCDN accounts, but customers are welcome and invited to try the new platform at any time.

“Today is the biggest single milestone for any company I’ve ever been a part of. It’s the result of countless hours of strategy, development, and execution from every StackPath department and team,” said Crosby. “I’m not exaggerating when I say that this is not just a milestone for our company. We won’t stop short of transforming the industry’s definition of the edge.”
