Sauce Labs Adds Visual Testing Tool to Platform

Sauce Labs has added native visual regression testing capabilities to its testing platform to enable DevOps teams to streamline workflows.

Marcus Merrell, vice president of technology strategy for Sauce Labs, said Sauce Visual provides the ability to test user interfaces without requiring DevOps teams to acquire, maintain and integrate a separate tool.

The overall goal is to make it possible to test functions and user interfaces in parallel by adding a single line of code to a DevOps workflow, he added. Updates to the visual presentation of a page are automatically highlighted, with any visual inconsistencies automatically surfaced. In comparison, a standalone visual testing tool increases the time it takes to execute a test suite, noted Merrell.

Sauce Visual natively uses the same tools as the rest of the Sauce test automation platform, and can be integrated into any continuous integration/continuous delivery (CI/CD) workflow. At launch, Sauce Visual is compatible with Java/JUnit, Java/TestNG, WebDriverIO, Selenium, Appium (web) and Cypress testing tools with support for Playwright, Puppeteer, TestCafe, Espresso, and XCUITest forthcoming.

The Sauce Labs approach also serves to reduce the total cost of application testing at a time when the number of applications organizations are building and deploying only continues to increase exponentially, said Merrell.

In general, organizations are attempting to strike a balance between shifting responsibility for testing too far left toward developers that typically lack testing expertise and the need to verify application experiences are delivered as expected. Many organizations have shifted more responsibility for testing toward developers in the hope of improving code quality and reducing the number of vulnerabilities that might find their way into a production environment. The challenge is those efforts have also increased the level of cognitive load developers need to carry at the expense of having more time to write application code.

Of course, in time, artificial intelligence (AI) tools will make it easier to generate test scripts, but there is still going to be a need for testers who were not involved in the writing of code to validate it, noted Merrell. The difference is those testers will not necessarily need to be rocket scientists as the process of creating tests becomes more automated, he added.

Testing user interfaces is especially problematic for developers because many of them don’t have a lot of expertise in the business functions that the application they are building enables. In addition, there are often minute changes to user interfaces that developers are not always going to discern.

As always, one of the first things that tends to be reduced whenever a developer falls behind schedule is testing. In a recent Sauce Labs survey found more than two-thirds (67%) admitted they pushed code into a production environment without testing, with more than a quarter (28%) acknowledging they do so on a regular basis.

The assumption is that if any issues do arise, they can be addressed via the next update to the application. End users, however, are less tolerant of that approach when, in the age of digital services, an alternative application is readily available.

  • Sauce Labs Acquires AutonomIQ to Advance App Testing

Sauce Labs Acquires AutonomIQ to Advance App Testing

Sauce Labs is acquiring AutonomIQ, a provider of a scriptless test automation platform based on machine learning (ML) algorithms.

Matt Wyman, chief product officer for Sauce Labs, said the acquisition of AutonomIQ will play a critical role in enabling Sauce Labs to push testing further left toward developers and, ultimately, “citizen testers” that are becoming part of the DevOps testing tool chain.

The acquisition of AutonomIQ comes on the heels of the company announcing its intent to acquire API Fortress, an application programming interface (API) testing platform provider. Terms of neither acquisition were disclosed.

Wyman said the rise of DevOps coupled with an increase in the volume of applications being developed using low-code tools are the primary drivers of a need to shift testing further left. As more citizen developers are building applications, they require access to a testing platform that doesn’t require them to know how to write scripts to test applications, said Wyman.

The AutonomIQ platform employs machine learning to understand, for example, natural language descriptions of test cases or captured mouse clicks. It then generates synthetic data and test cases that can self-heal when an application changes, said Wyman.

That approach to testing is more feasible in software-as-a-service (SaaS) environments, where a custom application based on a platform such as Salesforce, ServiceNow, Workday, Oracle or SAP doesn’t tend to change as radically as an application being built from the ground up, Wyman said. Those classes of applications will still require either developers or a dedicated team of testers to build tests using scripts, said Wyman.

In fact, Wyman said testing those applications is becoming more challenging in the age of microservices. The API Fortress acquisition addresses that issue, because microservices are dependent on APIs to communicate with other microservices, said Wyman. In general, Wyman said Sauce Labs is now moving beyond being focusing only on functional testing of user interfaces.

It remains to be seen how quickly testing will move to the left. Developers are being held more accountable for the quality of their applications, so testing integration within the application development process has increased. This has led to application testing becoming more tightly integrated with continuous integration/continuous delivery (CI/CD) platforms. Less clear is to what degree those efforts might have reduced the burdens of a dedicated application testing team that typically evaluates applications after they have been constructed.

Exactly where and how citizen testers are being incorporated into those processes is also unclear. In theory, citizen testers can bring more business process expertise to the testing process. Getting individuals with that level of expertise to make time to participate in application testing while an application is being built can be a challenge.

Regardless of approach, however, it is already apparent that machine learning algorithms, along with other forms of artificial intelligence (AI), will play a much larger role in application testing in the coming months and years.

  • Sauce Labs Enters into Definitive Agreement to Acquire AutonomIQ

    • Planned acquisition bolsters continuous testing platform with leading scriptless test automation solution
    • Planned addition of scriptless test automation expands and complements company’s existing capability set, enabling continuous testing leader to serve broader range of users and use cases

SAN FRANCISCO – February 2, 2020 – Sauce Labs Inc., the leading provider of continuous testing solutions that deliver digital confidence, today announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire AutonomIQ, a leading provider of scriptless test automation solutions. AutonomIQ leverages powerful AI and ML capabilities to help users quickly and easily create and execute tests for modern SaaS and low-code applications. The planned acquisition further expands and enriches the depth and breadth of the Sauce Labs portfolio, adding scriptless test automation to a growing capability set that now also includes API testing, visual testing, and front-end performance testing in addition to the functional UI testing for which the company is known.

“We’re thrilled to start 2021 by picking up where we left off in 2020,” said Aled Miles, president and CEO, Sauce Labs. “On the heels of our recently announced acquisition of API Fortress, we are poised to add yet another essential piece to the testing collaboration platform, one that will help our customers continue to accelerate their digital initiatives. We look forward to welcoming the people and products of AutonomIQ and see them grow and thrive as part of the Sauce Labs team.”

The planned acquisition of AutonomIQ complements the company’s existing expertise in Selenium, Appium, and other leading scripted test frameworks, enabling Sauce Labs to serve a broader range of users and use cases. AutonomIQ is ideally suited for the emergent class of users such as citizen developers, manual testers, product managers, and business analysts who lack the coding expertise required to write test scripts, and for the growing volume of smaller, less complex business applications for which the full power of scripted test frameworks is not required. The solution is also ideal for administrators of Salesforce, Workday, ServiceNow, Oracle, SAP, and other SaaS applications now common in the modern enterprise, who simply seek to define business processes and make sure their custom SaaS app follows those processes as intended.

“Sauce Labs and AutonomIQ are a perfect pairing for any organization that understands the expanded role automated testing now plays in delivering quality applications at speed,” said Ram Shanmugam, founder and CEO, AutonomIQ, who will join the Sauce Labs leadership team upon close of the planned acquisition. “I’m incredibly proud of everything we accomplished at AutonomIQ and am excited about the opportunity for continued growth that being part of Sauce Labs affords us. We built AutonomIQ on a fierce commitment to innovation and customer service, and I have no doubt that will continue as Sauce Labs shares those same passions.”

The changing face of modern business applications

Though Selenium, Appium, and other powerful scripted test frameworks remain ideal for automated testing of larger and more complex applications, smaller, low-code applications are becoming increasingly common in the enterprise, driven by a surge in the prevalence of SaaS business applications. Not only are these applications far more limited in functionality and scope than their more complex counterparts, making it simpler than ever to describe the functions and processes they can and cannot perform, but they are often managed and administered by users without expertise in coding and test creation.

“With the continued maturation of AI and ML capabilities, there is now both a need for and opportunity to deliver easy-to-use, scriptless test automation solutions that address those users and use cases for which scripted frameworks are not the ideal solutions,” said John Kelly, CTO, Sauce Labs. “The planned acquisition of AutonomIQ lowers the barrier to entry for Sauce Labs users lacking background or proficiency in the coding of automated test scripts, while also providing additional value to traditional Sauce Labs users who, while proficient with scripted frameworks, are nonetheless responsible for many test cases where simple, easy-to-use scriptless automation can save them time and help them be more productive.”

    Simple low-code automation with AutonomIQ

AutonomIQ provides users with a simple yet powerful scriptless test automation platform that dramatically lowers the barriers to entry that have historically prevented many organizations from getting their automated testing initiatives off the ground. The AutonomIQ platform leverages sophisticated AI/ML to understand natural language descriptions of test cases, or captured mouse clicks, and then generates synthetic data and robust automated testing that “self heals” when the app changes. AutonomIQ offers a variety of solutions purpose-built for the testing of modern SaaS business applications, including Salesforce, ServiceNow, Workday, Oracle, and SAP.

  • Sauce Labs Launches New Machine Learning-Based Analytics Solution to Improve Test Quality

    • 2020 Continuous Testing Benchmark Report reveals 27 percent of all test failures are traceable to a single common failure pattern
    • New Failure Analysis offering leverages AI and ML to rapidly analyze test data and use pattern recognition to surface most common causes of test failure
    • Enables developers to quickly address the most pervasive issues impacting test quality

SAN FRANCISCO – May 12, 2019 – Sauce Labs Inc., the leading provider of continuous testing solutions that deliver digital confidence, today announced the launch of Failure Analysis, a new analytics solution that applies sophisticated machine learning to customers’ pass/fail data in order to surface the most common reasons a given set of tests fail. Failure Analysis gives developers, testers, and QA managers insight into how often the same type of failure repeats itself across a given test suite, enabling them to move quickly to address the most pervasive issues and drive rapid improvement in test quality.

The newly released Sauce Labs Continuous Testing Benchmark Report for 2020 reveals that a significant portion of test failures can be traced to a small number of underlying issues impacting a test suite. Based on anonymized data from millions of tests run on the Sauce Labs platform, the benchmark report found the single most common failure pattern was responsible for 27 percent of all failures within a test suite. The top three most common failure patterns accounted for 48.2 percent of all failures, and the top five most common failure patterns accounted for 59.3 percent of all failures. By finding and aggregating the most common failure patterns, developers can remedy the majority of test failures with just a few fixes, eliminating much of the costly and time-consuming manual follow up traditionally required to determine the source of failed tests.

“Testing is critical to delivering flawless applications and creating great user experiences, yet the task of maintaining a high-quality test suite has only become more difficult as organizations accelerate the pace of development and automate testing at scale,” said Matt Wyman, chief product officer, Sauce Labs. “With Failure Analysis, developers finally have a machine learning-driven tool to help balance the demand for faster deployments with the heightened need to maintain a reliable test suite. We’re excited to deliver this new resource to aid in the testing community’s collective efforts to improve test quality, increase developer productivity, and build digital confidence.”

Improving test quality is a critical need

The release of Failure Analysis comes as many development teams reach an inflection point in their digital journeys. Though more organizations than ever have shifted to agile development methodologies and implemented continuous testing throughout the software development cycle, poor test quality continues to undermine many efforts to deliver quality applications at speed. Poor test quality also increases the occurrence of false failures, frustrating testers and developers responsible for manually following up on those failures, and eroding confidence in the overall automated testing process.

The findings of the 2020 Continuous Testing Benchmark Report underscore just how prevalent poor test quality is among most enterprise organizations. The report found that only 24.37 percent of organizations pass at least 90 percent of their desktop tests, while only 25.45 percent of organizations pass at least 90 percent of their mobile tests.

Failure Analysis from Sauce Labs addresses this increasingly urgent need by helping testers and developers better understand why tests are failing and enabling them to prioritize remediation accordingly. Leveraging powerful machine learning algorithms to analyze an organization’s pass/fail data and its Selenium and Appium command logs, Failure Analysis gives testers and developers visibility into precisely where and how often failure patterns recur within a test suite, all from a single dashboard view within the Sauce Labs UI. Using the learnings provided by Failure Analysis to improve test quality, organizations can also dramatically lower the occurrence of false failures, ensuring that failed tests carry a high signal-to-noise ratio and developers feel confident that a failed test has truly detected a breaking change as opposed to the flaky noise of an unreliable test suite.

Failure Analysis is available now as a standard capability for enterprise customers as part of the Insights package within the Sauce Labs Continuous Testing Cloud. Sauce Labs provides a host of analytics capabilities that provide intelligent views into test data, including a new test overview and trends dashboard, interactive visualizations that enable customers to drill down on granular data sets, and a powerful REST API that allows users to aggregate data into their home-grown quality dashboard or test analytics tools. For more information, visit the Insights landing page.

The 2020 Sauce Labs Continuous Testing Benchmark Report is also now available as a free community resource.
