Container Usage and Adoption, Here is Your Chance to Tell Us What You Think

We are teaming up once again with ClusterHQ for an update on Container usage and adoption. Our new survey is available and shouldn’t take more than 5-7 minutes of your time. We are looking to see if the container adoption and usage has changed since our last survey last summer. Please take a moment to fill out the survey. If you fill out contact info at the end, you are eligible to win a $50 dollar Amazon gift card. One in 50 wins a card. If you don’t want to give any contact information, you don’t have to but we can’t contact you if you were to win a gift card. Either way we would love your input!

While containers are capturing lots of buzz and attention, many still doubt their impact in real world procurements. However, we are hearing enough subjective feedback to think that this is not the case. We think containers are catching on quickly, perhaps even quicker than cloud adoption did at similar time frames. But that is subjective. We are looking for numbers that prove or disprove it. So even if you are not using containers now, we want to know that too.

The standard line is that containers are being tested in dev and test environments, but are not ready for prime time. Yet Docker, CoreOS, Kubernetes and the entire container ecosystem point to more and more customer references. Can everyone be just playing with containers in their labs? We don’t think so.

On the other hand, there are questions about security, scalability, networking. Should you lock in to one vendors complete stack? How open should the ecosystem be? What about data, databases, OS, etc. Lots of questions and we really don’t have a lot of objective data points. Help us change this by giving us your own thoughts, experiences and ideas.

We will share the full report with analysis with our readers when complete. But don’t miss this chance to be heard and make a difference.

  • ClusterHQ and devopsy.kinsta.cloud survey show Containers poised for mass adoption

ClusterHQ and devopsy.kinsta.cloud survey show Containers poised for mass adoption

devopsy.kinsta.cloud and ClusterHQ, conducted a survey on Container usage that shows an overwhelming majority of users have either already using, testing or investigating Container usage. With 285 respondents representing a wide range of organizations, it shows that Containers will be part of many production environments in the very near future.

Currently, only 38 percent of respondents reported using containers in production environments, but that number is projected to increase 69 percent over the next 12 months as organizations find new ways to address important barriers to adoption. It verified that Docker is overwhelmingly the container of choice, with 92% of respondents having used or investigated it, followed by LXC (32%) a distant second, but still far ahead of Rocket (21%). To access the complete survey and report visit https://clusterhq.com/assets/pdfs/state-of-container-usage-june-2015.pdf.

Companies ranging in size from small organizations with 1 to 500 employees (69%), to mid-size companies with 501-2,500 personnel (12%), all the way up to large enterprises with over 2,500 employees (19%) are represented in the survey. This demonstrates that containers are being embraced by all businesses from the startup stage to Fortune 500 companies.

Respondents came predominantly from Development, Operations and DevOps teams. QA and security teams were a smaller share. The survey revealed how container technologies are being used today, as well as research-based insights while providing clues as to where the industry is trending.

From the ClusterHQ release on the survey:

The survey also revealed insights into what is perceived to be the primary barriers to container adoption. Security seems to be emerging as a consistent concern throughout the DevOps community in these times of never ending breaches throughout the world:

    • Security — 61%
    • Data Management — 53%
    • Networking — 51%
    • Skills and Knowledge — 48%
    • Persistent Storage — 48%

Data Management capabilities also emerged as essential to the success of container strategies and that the vast majority of organizations want to run databases as well as additional services in containers.

    • When asked to rate how important data management is to container strategies, 66 percent reported it as a critical or important gating factor, 29 percent ranked it as moderately important and only 5 percent reported that it carries no importance.
    • Over 70% of respondents said they would like to run a database or other stateful service in their container environments.
    • Respondents were also asked which specific features of container data management they considered to be most important, selecting the “integration of data management capabilities into existing container workflows and tools” as their first choice, with “seamless movement of data between dev, test and production environments” a close second.
    • MySQL (53%), Redis (52%), PostgreSQL (50%), and Elasticsearch (43%) were reported as the top four most frequently used stateful services.

Containers have become known for portability and flexibility, the survey reveals that organizations are using them in different infrastructures but most frequently in on-premises data centers (57%), followed by Amazon Web Services (52%).

So I think it is safe to say Containers are rapidly becoming one of the staples of development and are here to stay to stay in the foreseeable future.

devopsy.kinsta.cloud along with ElasticBox are currently conducting another survey on “What is DevOps to you?” One in 50 respondents wins a $50 dollar Amazon gift card and one grand prize winner will win a new 3DR Drone. Take a few minutes to help us with this survey.

  • Container Usage Survey

    Container Usage Survey

Is there any topic in IT hotter than containers today? Hard to make a case that there is. Whether it is Docker or Rocket, LHX or something else, it seems everyone is talking about them. But what are people actually doing with them? devopsy.kinsta.cloud and ClusterHQ are conducting a survey on actual and planned container usage. The results will be published just before DockerCon next month.

We need your help though to make the survey as insightful as possible. The more responses we have the better. So we are offering a $50 dollar Amazon gift card to one out of every 50 people who take the survey. The survey is only about 20 questions and shouldn’t take more than a few minutes to complete.  We don’t ask for contact info unless you want to be eligible for the gift card giveaway.  Either way taking the survey is a big help to us, ClusterHQ and everyone else as well.

The link to take the survey is:https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/3TZ9LDC

One of the key areas of inquiry is how many people are actually using containers in production environment. How many have already used containers versus how many are planning to do so? What about data management in containers? These areas and more are explored in the survey.  It should make for some excellent research.

Thanks for your help in making this a great survey!
