Understanding the customer journey is vital to success, but is incredibly complex and challenging to manage. From window shoppers to mobile browsers, there are dozens or more customer touchpoints that can accumulate, and any one of these touchpoints is an opportunity to convert a prospect. This is where Thunderhead’s ONE Engagement Hub provides users with the insight and context into customer behavior that businesses need to thrive. It is critical that Thunderhead continuously delivers a flawless experience to its users so that they never miss an opportunity to convert.

“Applitools gives our entire team huge peace-of-mind,” said Walt Harris, head of quality at Thunderhead. “We know about the visual impact of our code. Using Applitools makes us more nimble and lets us develop more quickly.”

Before Applitools, the engineering team at Thunderhead wrote Selenium tests to validate both UI behavior and end-to-end functionality. They had no automation for the visual components of these tests. Small changes to UI code would require significant rewrites in order for tests to pass, and many of these changes to internal element locators had no visual impact.

By inspecting visual elements, Applitools Visual AI detects actual bugs, ignoring minor visual variances. Making  Applitools much more accurate across browser and operating system changes without time consuming false positives. After implementing Applitools, Thunderhead discovered an ease of test development they had not previously experienced. The code used to validate the content on screen was replaced by a simple call to Applitools, which captured the entire screen and compared it with the last approved version. Via AI, the meaningful differences were highlighted so engineers could easily fix or approve.

    Thunderhead realized the following outcomes:

    • Faster builds with test execution times down 48x – from four hours to five minutes using the Applitools Ultrafast Test Cloud
    • Saves time with less code to write & maintain
    • Increases in developer productivity by testing earlier, eliminating time consuming context-switching
    • Peace of mind with massive increases to test coverage
    • Faster time to market by enabling developers to focus time on creating more features and delivering more value to their users

“We are pleased to see the incredible impact Applitools is having on Thunderhead and its software development team,” said Gil Sever, co-founder and CEO at Applitools. “Thunderhead’s ability to deliver flawless experiences to their users is paramount to the success of hundreds of global companies. We’re proud to help them along their journey and look forward to creating more ways for the Thunderhead engineering team to deliver new and improved features to their customers.”

  • Modern Cross Browser Testing Report Indicates 18.2x Faster Test Cycles When Using Applitools’ Ultrafast Test Cloud

3,112 hours of cross browser testing data empirically proves incredible speed and coverage gains helping engineers release higher quality apps faster than ever before

SAN MATEO, Calif., September 15, 2020 — Applitools (https://applitools.com/), provider of a next generation test automation platform powered by Visual AI and Ultrafast Grid, today announced an industry report empirically proving that modern cross browser testing powered by Visual AI helps engineers test 18.2x faster across the full test cycle including writing, running, analyzing, reporting, and maintaining tests.

To download the “Modern Cross Browser Testing Through Visual AI Report” visit: https://applitools.com/modern-cross-browser-testing-report

Data for the report was sourced from 203 engineers across 75 countries who spent 3,112 hours completing the Ultrafast Cross Browser Testing Hackathon in June 2020. The data shows Applitools Ultrafast Test Cloud Powered by Visual AI allowed engineers to complete a full test cycle on a modern, responsive e-commerce application in just 1.6 hours versus 29.2 hours when using traditional cloud testing environments.

Additional highlights from the report include:

    • A detailed breakdown of the 18.2x time savings across the end-to-end test cycle including writing, running, analyzing, reporting, and maintaining tests. Because Applitools runs tests once locally, then renders across all browsers, viewports, and devices, it eliminates the need for slow VMs and multiple connections that traditional test cloud solutions rely on.
    • 99% reduction in the number of lines of test code virtually eliminating the maintenance overhead that plagues traditional cloud testing solutions.
    • 91% reduction in the use of locators due to the use of Applitools Visual AI because it relies on images instead of brittle, flaky locators to support the test scenario.
    • 77% increase in software engineer satisfaction vs. traditional cloud testing approaches. Applitools received a Net Promoter Score (NPS)* of 70 compared to -54 for traditional approaches to cross browser testing.
    • Engineers of any skill level learned Applitools Ultrafast Test Cloud in less than 90 minutes and upskilled to modern cross browser testing as a result.

“The incredible challenges brought on by digital transformation require a modern approach to cross environment testing. Applitools Ultrafast Test Cloud combines Visual AI with container-based rendering to address them,” said Gil Sever, CEO and co-founder of Applitools. “Hundreds of software engineers have shown us how Applitools Ultrafast Test Cloud is an incredible efficiency multiplier for cross browser testing. It delivers significant time and money savings while helping teams release faster than ever before. It represents the future of testing where continuous quality is key to successful digital transformation for modern engineering teams.”

“Cross browser testing is ultra fast using Applitools Ultrafast Test Cloud. Bugs that I missed (and there were lots!) on different browsers and viewports were easily caught without affecting the time it takes to run my tests,” said Marie Drake, Principal Test Engineer at News UK. “Functional testing frameworks automate browsers, but they are not built to catch the visual changes now incredibly common, cross environment. Applitools Ultrafast Test Cloud helps engineers succeed when doing modern cross browser testing.”

Data from the report was sourced from the Ultrafast Cross Browser Testing Hackathon which challenged participants to author cross browser and cross device tests against a modern, responsive, ecommerce app. The event challenged engineers to test a new release candidate across seven different browsers and three viewport sizes and ensure the new version is bug free. Participants used both their preferred legacy cloud testing solution and Applitools Ultrafast Test Cloud Powered by Visual AI integrated into their preferred test framework and desired programming language using over 50 SDKs.

Engineering leaders that participated in the study commented:

    • “With Applitools, setting up configurations related to viewports, devices and browsers is very easy and saves a lot of time,” said Himanshu Soni, Lead QA at Amadeus Labs. “Frankly speaking, I spent a heck of a lot of time setting the same configuration for traditional tests, whereas using the Ultrafast Grid it was in a blink of an eye.”
    • “The Ultrafast Grid is really the right tool when it comes to cross-browser and responsive design testing,” said Roman Lymariev, Senior Quality Assurance Automation Engineer at Mobiquity. “You can quickly set up your tests and start catching the related bugs really fast. Traditional approaches do not work quite as well in this department.”
    • “I loved how intuitive Applitools Ultrafast Grid is,” said Kerry McKeever, Senior Software Test Engineer at Paylocity. “The speed of learning the API and the dashboard, as well as the speed of developing the tests without the need for dozens of locators, conditional waits, management of drivers/browsers, etc., made testing a breeze.”

  • Applitools Visual AI Reaches One Billion Images Analyzed

World’s only AI-powered visual testing platform doubles usage year-over-year helping dev teams solve the complex, real world test automation problems brought on by the acceleration of digital transformation

SAN MATEO, Calif., June 23, 2020 — Applitools (https://applitools.com/), provider of a next generation test automation platform through Visual AI and Ultrafast Grid, announced its Visual AI technology has surpassed one billion images analyzed since launching commercially and is projected to double year over year. Each of the one billion images analyzed includes AI enhancing data from over 130 different browser and version combinations, viewport information, and direct user feedback on defects, dynamic content, and more. This uniquely enables Applitools to maintain 99.9999% accuracy to hundreds of Enterprise customers worldwide including the top 10 software companies worldwide, five out of the 10 top banks in the US, and many other Global 500 companies.

Applitools Visual AI is rapidly outpacing the competition to visually validate business applications now forced into rapid digital transformation by the COVID-19 pandemic. Only Visual AI is agile enough to handle the complex and evolving challenges organizations face delivering quality modern applications including:

    • Cross-browser, cross-device, and cross-platform testing
    • Dynamic content
    • Responsive design for multiple screen sizes
    • Validation of compliance and regulatory requirements
    • Continuous Integration and Deployment (CI/CD) without compromising quality
    • End-to-end testing, integration testing, unit testing, and component level testing
    • Support of joint development and test engineering teams (DevOps and Shift Left)
    • Pre-production testing and post-production monitoring automation and maintenance

“With Applitools, we’ve been able to make visual validation a first-class citizen within our CI/CD ecosystem,” said Mike Millgate, Technical Quality Architect at Gannett. “Our CI environment executes tens of thousands of Visual AI-powered tests against the grid each month. Since implementing it, we’ve been able to remove frail functional tests from our ecosystem and achieve a 99.8% pass percentage. We are faster, more stable, and ship with confidence with Applitools Visual AI running on the Ultrafast Grid.”

Recent comparisons show that Applitools Visual AI outperforms any other UI validation technology including those leveraging pixel-to-pixel and DOM based analysis approaches. Applitools Visual AI saves customers from time consuming and disruptive false positives that often break builds and block the continuous integration and delivery (CI/CD) so vital to modern dev team success. Applitools customers also benefit from automated maintenance AI algorithms that significantly speed up the test results analysis process by automating repetitive maintenance operations. For example, automated maintenance AI allows users to approve or reject a bug only once on a single browser, single device, and in a single screen size. Then the AI engine automatically extends that operation across all devices, browsers, form factors and applications pages. This additional level of AI can also group multiple test results that reflect the same bug to allow the user to review only a single occurrence of each bug without spending time reviewing tens, hundreds, and sometimes thousands of repetitions of the same bug on multiple environments.

“This is the perfect example of how AI should be applied to solve complex, real world problems,” said Greg Sypolt from EverFi. “By eliminating the false positives associated with pixel and DOM based comparison tools, our team saves huge amounts of time and money. We simply can’t tolerate wasted time if we want to deliver quality applications as quickly as business teams need them in today’s global environment. Visual AI is a must for quality management of modern apps.”

To fully understand the differences between Visual AI and pixel-based tools for visual validation, read this recent InfoQ article (https://www.infoq.com/articles/visual-ai-web-app-testing/).

Developers using modern development frameworks like Storybook, or developer friendly testing frameworks like Cypress, Espreso, XCUITest, etc. to test early and often in the software development cycle also see huge value in Visual AI. “I love how Applitools Eyes has the smarts to ignore minor visual differences in your components, especially when testing on different browser types where it’s easy for the layout to be off by a pixel,” said Kent C. Dodds, Google Developer Expert and Creator of TestingJavaScript.com.

“The largest brands in the world trust Applitools because our Visual AI technology accurately emulates the human eye and brain to compare screenshot images, not pixels, for visual differences,” said Adam Carmi CTO and Co-Founder of Applitools. “Over the years we have collected data from thousands of applications and web sites that are fully tagged and indexed in a way that shows complete user journeys inside customer’s applications, bugs vs valid application changes, dynamic page regions, and more. To be able to see the same state of an app across different browsers, operating systems, viewport sizes, and device types over an extended period of time and app versions for such a large variety of apps is priceless.”
