Ignition Partners brings a little bit of Seattle to the Bay area for Microsoft Build

Ignition Partners is throwing a party! Along with four of our portfolio companies – Chef, Cloudera, Couchbase and Xamarin – we will host a special reception in connection with the Microsoft Build Developers Conference 2015.

The event will be held on Wednesday, May 29th from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Press Club, 20 Yerba Buena Lane, San Francisco, near Moscone Center, where Build is taking place.

With two of our three managing partners at Ignition Partners – Frank Artale and John Connors, having deep roots with both Microsoft and the Seattle area, the idea is that along with our 4 portfolio companies, we will bring a little bit of our Seattle heritage to the party and the conference.

We will highlight the two major Seattle-based enterprise Cloud platforms, Microsoft’s Azure and Amazon Web Services. Ignition is working on behalf of its portfolio companies, especially cloud-oriented companies based in the San Francisco Bay Area, to build our profile in Seattle with these cloud market makers.

The networking event will offer an opportunity for open access to the cloud decision makers within Microsoft and to create synergies that may lead to new projects. Attendees will be able to network with thought leaders and gain insight into both the Microsoft and Amazon ecosystems.New companies able to offer products and services that work with or on Azure may leverage new and untapped business opportunities, beyond those found in the San Francisco market.

See you at the Press Club, and remember, it’s all about the build!

  • Happy Birthday devopsy.kinsta.cloud and what a year it’s been

Happy Birthday devopsy.kinsta.cloud and what a year it’s been

    They say it’s your birthday
We’re gonna have a good time,
    I’m glad it’s your birthday
    Happy birthday to you

Wow, a whole year. To paraphrase the Grateful Dead, what a strange trip it’s been. We launched devopsy.kinsta.cloud a year ago today with perhaps the naive notion that DevOps was going to really change the way organizations do IT and business. That it was almost inevitable that DevOps was going to move beyond the realm of early adopters and visionaries, beyond startups and Unicorns and see adoption by enterprises and businesses of all sizes and shapes. You know what? We were right!

DevOps has skyrocketed onto the mainstream IT consciousness and we were lucky enough to have a first row seat here at devopsy.kinsta.cloud. We are even proud of the fact that maybe we even played a small part in this adventure.

But let’s be real. It hasn’t been all sprinkles and smiles. We have learned a lot of lessons along the year and usually the hard way. But sometimes the hard way is the best way to learn them. We knew that our audience was going to be a technical group. They would want to hear about and from people who had problems and issues similar to their own and how others solved or addressed the issues. We knew that they liked to find out about different tools that can help you keep the IT machine humming along.

We defined our mission as pitching a big tent for DevOps. I said it in the very first post one year ago today. To me personally pitching that big tent meant that we weren’t just about the existing DevOps community, many of which were early adopters, thought leaders and visionaries in the space. In my mind this group represented only about 15% at most of the eventual DevOps community. I realized that though some people were talking about and instituting DevOps principles for some years already, the majority of our audience was going to be new to DevOps. I wanted devopsy.kinsta.cloud to have a place for everyone interested in DevOps.

That right there has also been the source of some of our biggest mistakes and angst over the year. We definitely took some time finding our legs under us. Finding people with the credibility that others would respect, striking the right tone, fine tuning the mix of articles and topics. At each step along the way we made some missteps. Many in the community didn’t mince words in pointing out what they didn’t like. Others remained silent and just ignored us. We took our lumps for sure, but we just kept putting one foot in front of the other, putting out new fresh content every day.

Many times readers or just people piling on via Twitter took us to task about what people wrote in their articles. We had and still have no problem with readers disagreeing with what an author writes here on devopsy.kinsta.cloud. It is healthy to have debate. But we were surprised that people would think that we wrote the particular post or article. Or that is what we espoused. Just not the case. We don’t agree with what everyone writes here. However we think people have the right to write what they believe in. We think giving people a place to write means not censoring or telling them what to write.

Finally we started catching stride. Since the summer months our entire business has been on a rocket like trajectory. Here are some salient metrics:

    1. We are on track for a 100k view month for March. This represents a 100% increase over just November 2014.
    2. Our twitter, facebook, Google +, Linkedin following has grown exponentially
    3. We have published over 630 articles in the past year, by well over 125 different authors!
    4. We have produced or been media sponsor for 10+ events (with many more coming this year)
    5. We have produced 8 webinars
    6. A DevOps salary survey
    7. Fulfilled our goal of becoming the single largest collection of original DevOps related content on the Internet.
    8. We published over 50 newsletters and now offer several options on how you want to receive your devopsy.kinsta.cloud news.

At a time when media companies like GigaOm are going under. When other media outlets are laying off paid writers, relying on unpaid bloggers, devopsy.kinsta.cloud is adding to our featured writers. At the same time continuing to publish more fresh, original DevOps content than anyone. Other sites have taken to syndicating blog posts from others, republishing stories from elsewhere. At devopsy.kinsta.cloud you can be sure that when we publish a story it is the first time that content has appeared on the Internet.

We have spent a lot of time thinking and planning for the coming year. We think that 2015 and 2016 will be big years for DevOps. We want to make sure we do our part and continue our growth. Look for many new features and new takes on distributing DevOps content and engaging the community this year.

If you look in our about section today you will see a near final draft of our editorial calendar. Our new media kits is also almost ready. You can see a near final draft of that in our sponsor page. Yes, 2015 promises to be even better than 2014. I am sure there will be some missteps this year as well. Hopefully we have learned from our past and there will be less.

Most of all on behalf of everyone associated with devopsy.kinsta.cloud, I want to thank each and every one of you reading this article for your support this year. Without your support, none of the amazing things that has happened so far would be possible.

So happy birthday devopsy.kinsta.cloud. Here is to many more. Also did I mention the first 50 people who tweet with #happybirthdaydevopsdotcom will receive a special edition t-shirt. Thanks again!

  • The DevOps Institute heralds the dawn of enterprise class DevOps training and certification

The DevOps Institute heralds the dawn of enterprise class DevOps training and certification

I am very proud to announce that today marks the launch of the DevOps Institute. Myself and the devopsy.kinsta.cloud team are partners in this joint venture with some very successful, experienced IT training professionals, Jayne Groll and Lisa Schwartz. The DevOps Institute (DOI) seeks to codify best practices in DevOps into repeatable training, education and certifications. We are launching with two classes, DevOps Foundation and Certified Agile Service Manager being offered. Several other courses including role and scheme based certifications and classes will be announced shortly. The press release is also available at the end of this article.

I know there is a segment of the DevOps community who view this as an apocalyptic event. While I obviously don’t agree with that view, I respect their opinion. As I have said all along the DevOps community is big and getting bigger. There is room for a wide spectrum of opinion.  If you don’t think that DevOps needs formal education, training and certification, so be it. I and many folks I have spoken to believe that as DevOps continues to cross the chasm into mainstream enterprise IT, a formal training and certification program will be required. Whether it is from the DOI or some other entity is the only question.

My co-founders and I believe we are in the best position to bring quality, best practices based DevOps training to market. We have assembled a world-class Board of Regents (BOR) who will help guide the course of the DOI, plan and approve all of our courses and ensure we are training based on best practices as they evolve. You can see and read about the BOR here. We have leading lights of the DevOps community, the IT training world and general IT business leaders as members. Looking at some of the names on this list will show you the kind of people we are involved with and should speak volumes as to what our commitment to this will be.

We welcome those of you who would like to join us in this mission. Our mandate is to be inclusive. We invite all providers who are offering or planning to offer DevOps training to join with us. We will examine your curriculum, provide you our syllabus to develop your own courses, certify your courses and even allow you to license and teach our courses. You can find out more about this at the DOI website, DevOpsInstitute.com

If you are interested in DevOps training and would like to be involved with the Institute as a board member or in some other capacity, contact us.

The launch of the DevOps Institute represents the culmination of over 9 months of work and research. However if we are to succeed this is just the end of the beginning and the start of a great new ad-venture!

THE RAPID ADOPTION OF DEVOPS NECESSITATES CERTIFIED TRAINING AND EDUCATION FOR ENTERPRISE IT MARKET

Boca Raton, Fl February, 18, 2015– The DevOps Institute (DOI) launched today with the mission of serving as the premier source for aligning industry standard quality DevOps training and examination services for enterprise IT. The Institute is led by a Board of Regents who will oversee DOI’s offerings in an effort to codify and promote DevOps’ best practices and standards that enable enterprise IT to deliver more value faster to their customers.

The initial Board of Regents includes Gene Kim, Lori Macvittie, Sanjeev Sharma, Helen Beal, Rohit Antao, Gary Gruver, Lou Hunnebeck, Matthew Selheimer, Donna Knapp and JP Morgenthal. They join co-founders Jayne Groll, Lisa Schwartz and Alan Shimel in leading the DevOps Institute to fulfill its mission.

“The DevOps movement has matured rapidly over the last few years. We believe that the time is right to have established best practices training and certification”, said Lisa Schwartz, CEO of DevOps Institute. “DevOps training is a logical step in DevOps adoption by the enterprise IT market. The DevOps Institute’s mission is to codify emerging best practices in DevOps and translate them into the highest quality education and certified training courses. Working with leaders of the community, DOI will continue to develop and offer the finest in DevOps and associated programs and certifications.”, continued Schwartz.

“DevOps is transforming how technology work is done, for Development, Test and IT Operations. I support any effort that helps elevate the state of the practice, and bring consistency and quality to the training offered,” said Gene Kim, DevOps researcher and co-author of The Phoenix Project and the upcoming DevOps Cookbook.

The DevOps Institute’s initial courses including certification are DevOps Foundation and Certified Agile Service Manager (CASM). Additional certification courses will be announced in the coming weeks including role based schemes and certifications. DOI will offer courses directly and through a network of Registered Education Providers. Courses will be available both in person and virtually utilizing state-of-art virtual classrooms. First courses will begin in early March. More information can be found at DOI’s website: http://www.devopsinstitute.com
