  • Call for Papers Now Open: CD Summit and Jenkins Days Fall Tour

Call for Papers Now Open: CD Summit and Jenkins Days Fall Tour

After a successful spring run, devopsy.kinsta.cloud, where the world meets DevOps, along with premier sponsors, CloudBees, the enterprise Jenkins Company and IBM, today announced that their DevOps Connect: CD Summit/Jenkins Days roadshow will continue this fall with seven dates in the United States and Europe. The call for speakers to appear at these events is now open. Today we are announcing the shows will be coming to Atlanta, Denver, Austin, Seattle, Los Angeles, Berlin, and Amsterdam.

I began my employment at devopsy.kinsta.cloud as a web admin and social media manager. Shortly thereafter, I became marketing and media manager. I had decent education surrounding web scripting (HTML/PHP/CSS/Photoshop), but none about DevOps and software engineering. I attended the spring events and had a front-row seat to the summits and what they had to offer. The keynotes offered a plethora of information surrounding Jenkins, BlueMix and how to undertake a DevOps transformation at the corporate level. We were honored to have Kohsuke Kawaguchi, CTO of CloudBees and founder of Jenkins, offer his unique perspective on the growth of Jenkins, joining CloudBees, and the development of recently released Jenkins 2.0.

Our other two keynotes featured individuals we were lucky to have. Gary Gruver, who led the transformation at HP and Macy’s, outlined what he walked into, how he changed the company, and what happened when we walked away. He gave a clear-cut story about the transformation he embarked on when joining those companies. The third keynote came from Mustafa Kapidia of IBM. Mustafa was such a captivating speaker who really knew how to gauge his audience’s knowledge surrounding DevOps and continuous delivery.

The breakout sessions in the afternoon following lunch offered a bit of something for everyone. There were three separate tracks: technical, management and Jenkins. The technical track was just that: a track devoted to the more technical-oriented crowd such as engineers and developers. The management track was devoted more to those looking to undergo transformations, incorporate DevOps at their workplace, and manage DevOps teams. The Jenkins track focused solely on information that was connected to utilizing Jenkins in the workplace.

In addition to the summit itself, CD Summit and Jenkins Days feature a day dedicated to workshops on DevOps, IBM BlueMix and Jenkins. These were a hit from the get-go, pulling in people of all levels, from developers to executives wishing to broaden their knowledge. The fall will feature the workshop day as well.

I met a lot of people during my time at these events, cementing the fact it is a great place to network and learn about different companies and how they are doing devops. Prior to attending these events I only knew a small chunk about DevOps/CD/CI based on the articles we publish on devopsy.kinsta.cloud and from my interaction with professionals in the industry. By attending the events I expanded my knowledge, greatly improving my capacity to understand what occurs from the junior level to the executive level at a company utilizing DevOps practices and principles.

According to the press release, “These events are designed for Enterprise Managers and Buyers along with Developers, Engineers, Sys Admins, and Architects. With three main tracks focused on IT managers, technical engineers, and Jenkins practitioners, attendees will get access to the best minds in CD and DevOps. The presenters are experienced developers, build managers, QA, DevOps practitioners, IT managers/executives, architects and IT operations who are luminaries within the DevOps community.”  I would recommend attending this event for anyone who fits this description, and for anyone outside the realm of this description who wishes to learn more about DevOps or continuous delivery.

Today we are opening up the Call for Papers for the fall events. Anyone who would like to submit their entry can follow the respective links below for each city:

  • Internet Pioneer Discusses Creation, Expectations and Security of DNS on its 33rd Birthday

“The Internet community has let legacy infrastructure designs constrain the future.”

Carlsbad, CA – June 23, 2016 – 33 years ago today, Paul Mockapetris, inventor of the Internet Domain Name System  watched the DNS take its first steps.  This critical development would open up what may be the world’s most utilized and important technological development for a mass audience. Did he understand the importance or impact that DNS would have when it was created?

“I think I saw the potential importance more clearly than the traditional ARPAnet era folks, who were busy replacing the old NCP protocols with IP and TCP,” noted Mockapetris, now Chief Scientist at ThreatSTOP.  “So I was very happy to take on the design job and build something quite beyond the task given me.”

By 1983, he had already spent 15 years designing distributed systems at what would become the Media Lab at MIT, Draper Labs, IBM, and the Distributed Computer System at UC Irvine. So he did expect his creation to be used across the Internet to manage a distributed operating systems and applications. DNS was really meant to manage a heterogeneous distributed, federated cloud and its services.

Something Mockapetris did not expect was the whole marketing and branding of names. “I guess I should have taken some classes in business and marketing,” he joked.  His biggest surprise was that the research agencies in the late 80s and 90s didn’t see naming systems and DNS in particular as merely the first steps in an Internet naming architecture. The original design had many places where next steps and additional mechanisms were indicated, and never were taken.  Recent work in named data networking has revived this field a bit.

“If I’d been told in 1988 what the DNS would eventually be used for, I would have said it wasn’t possible,” said Dr. Paul Vixie, Internet pioneer and CEO of Farsight Security, Inc. “Almost all Internet activities, whether for good or evil, begin with a DNS lookup.  Defenders who can monitor, and control, and investigate their use of DNS can by extension monitor, and control, and investigate their relationship to the Internet itself.”

The DNS was introduced during the transition from the ARPAnet to the IP/TCP based Internet, and was the largest single architectural innovation of that transition. As a critical infrastructure, DNS has been subjected to many attacks and misuse, but in today’s hardened form, it is seen as an essential tool for implementing security.

Security was intentionally left out of the initial design, along with several other functions.  DNSSEC is a next step, but is very heavy weight and doesn’t solve current problems like DDoS.

“The Internet community has let legacy infrastructure designs constrain the future,” notes Mockapetris. “For example, the 512 byte datagram limit of 1983 should be more like 500 Megabytes if we adjust for the million-fold increase in transmission speed in today’s Internet, though I’d settle for 512K bytes.  We are giving up on datagrams because of DDoS – while I understand the argument, I’m not ready to surrender yet.  There’s a lot of room for innovation here.  It’s as if we are requiring DNS to support paper tape and floppy disks.”

Mockapetris now provides guidance to the ongoing product innovation process for ThreatSTOP, and leads research into DNS-based security. “Effective security requires real-time threat intelligence that is distributed to all of an enterprise’s enforcement devices whether they are routers, firewalls, application delivery controllers, or servers. DNS is an ideal vehicle,” said Mockapetris. “Fielding powerful, scalable security tools that leverage the ubiquity of DNS to protect organizations of all sizes is critical.”

  • Red Hat to Acquire API Management Leader 3scale

Accelerates digital transformation with API driven hybrid-cloud architectures

    RALEIGH, N.C. — —

Red Hat, Inc. (NYSE: RHT), the world’s leading provider of open source solutions, today announced that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire 3scale, a leading provider of application programming interface (API) management technology. By adding 3scale to its existing portfolio, including Red Hat JBoss Middleware, Red Hat OpenShift and Red Hat Mobile Application Platform, Red Hat strengthens its enablement of the API economy with simplified cloud integration and microservices-based architectures.

3scale complements our existing middleware product portfolio and Red Hat OpenShift by enabling companies to create and publish APIs with tools such as Red Hat JBoss Fuse, and then manage and drive adoption of those APIs once they have been published.

CRAIG MUZILLASENIOR VICE PRESIDENT, APPLICATION PLATFORMS BUSINESS, RED HAT

In an era of digital transformation, agile development practices, and hybrid technology footprints, the API economy has become the norm. Forrester has estimated that 40 percent of U.S. companies will have API management solutions in 2020, spending $660 million in that year.1 Managed APIs are becoming strategic in the enterprise because they enable organizations to rapidly deliver new services that are easy to consume yet secure, scalable, and reliable, as well as enabling services (as APIs) to be monetized as products. Emerging architectures that decompose functionality into ever more finely-grained components–”microservices”–driven by mobile, the Internet of Things (IoT), and other trends, have further heightened the need for API management.

3scale was founded in 2007 with a goal of enabling organizations of all sizes to successfully create, manage, and use APIs in a web-enabled world where APIs became paramount. Today, 3scale offers a hybrid cloud based API management platform, which separates the cloud management layer from the API gateway, providing customers with flexibility, performance, and scale. 3scale provides this API management platform within a self-service model at more than 700 organizations across multiple industries, including Campbell’s Soup; Cartera Commerce; CrunchBase; Johnson Controls; Oxford University Press; SITA; and the University of California, Berkeley. 3scale has offices in Barcelona and San Francisco.

3scale and Red Hat began partnering in early 2015 to deliver a comprehensive platform for API-based application development. The joint solution combined the 3scale API Management Platform with technologies from Red Hat JBoss Middleware, Red Hat OpenShift and Red Hat Mobile Application Platform to provide an API-centric development, deployment, and management offering designed to accelerate application time-to-market. Red Hat JBoss Middleware customers will benefit from the hybrid-cloud capabilities from 3scale for modern architectures. Mobile application development in particular is highly API-centric and 3scale’s platform combined with the Red Hat Mobile Application Platform can lead to development and management simplicity at massive scales.

Most recently, 3scale introduced a containerized version of their API Gateway for Red Hat OpenShift, enabling users to easily and consistently create applications with microservices distributed across diverse, hybrid environments. The combined power of Red Hat’s container application platform and 3scale’s API management capabilities enables customers to simplify and automate tasks, helping reduce errors while increasing flexibility and control.

Red Hat has provided enterprises with leading open source platforms for building modern applications, integration and automation solutions. With the addition of 3scale’s API management solutions, and its existing middleware, container application platform, and mobile offerings, Red Hat can further simplify and accelerate customers’ digital strategies and accelerate time-to-market for API initiatives, and enable enterprises to innovate faster, in a smarter way.

The acquisition is expected to have no material impact to Red Hat’s revenue for the second fiscal quarter ending August 31, 2016 (the “second quarter”), or its fiscal year ending Feb. 28, 2017 (“fiscal 2017”). Management expects GAAP operating expense to increase by approximately $3 million, or ($0.01) per share, in the second quarter and approximately $7 million, or ($0.03) per share, for fiscal 2017 as a result of the transaction. Management expects that non-GAAP operating expense will increase by approximately $1.5 million, or approximately ($0.01) per share, in the second quarter and approximately $5 million, or approximately ($0.03) per share, for fiscal 2017 as a result of the transaction. Red Hat calculates non-GAAP operating expense by subtracting from GAAP operating expense the estimated impact of non-cash share-based compensation expense, which is expected to increase by approximately $0.8 million for the second quarter, amortization of intangible assets, which is expected to increase by approximately $0.2 million for each of the remaining quarters in fiscal 2017, and transaction costs related to business combinations, which are expected to be less than $1 million in the second quarter. For Red Hat’s full forecast, including the expected impact of the transaction on GAAP and non-GAAP operating margin and GAAP and non-GAAP earnings per share, refer to the guidance provided in its June 22, 2016 earnings press release.

The transaction is expected to close in June 2016, subject to customary closing conditions.

  • BigPanda Launches DevOps Tools to Troubleshoot and Maintain Healthy Infrastructure at Scale

New Product Releases Include Unified Search, Incident Dashboards and Enhanced Integrations with Atlassian JIRA Software, Splunk and Datadog

PALO ALTO, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–BigPanda, the Alert Correlation Platform that turns huge volumes of IT data and alerts into consolidated insights for businesses, today announced that it has launched new product updates and technology integrations which give Ops teams the ability to troubleshoot and maintain healthy infrastructure at scale. BigPanda’s platform now includes Unified Search and Incident Dashboards as well as new integrations with Atlassian JIRA Software, Splunk and Datadog.

“Companies looking to mature their operational processes to better support end customers can now unify and visualize monitoring data across their organizations, drastically reduce mean time to resolution and increase uptime with these new features,“ said Assaf Resnick, CEO of BigPanda.

Unified Search Provides Smarter Results, Less Noise

Just released, BigPanda Unified Search is a new way for Ops teams to access alert data from all of their monitoring sources, eliminating the need to conduct parallel investigations within each monitoring tool.

When a problem materializes in a datacenter, it’s not always clear when or where the failure occurred, and Ops teams may frantically search through tens of thousands of alerts from multiple tools to identify the root cause. BigPanda Unified Search drastically reduces time to investigate by giving users an interactive way to find the most relevant alerts and incidents. It surfaces insights from all sources of monitoring alerts by continuously organizing issues from all common modern and legacy tools, including Nagios, New Relic, AppDynamics, Pingdom, SolarWinds, Site24x7 and CloudWatch.

Using BigPanda Unified Search, Ops teams can search through historical alerts even if the original monitoring tool does not retain that data and automatically find related incidents that were previously resolved or may still be open.

    Operational Health Dashboards

Ops teams that need an at-a-glance representation of operational health now have access to the new Incident Dashboard in BigPanda. The new feature allows organizations to visualize the health of applications, services and infrastructure areas with personalized dashboards that enable them to be aware of and respond more quickly to issues that can impact the business.

The new dashboard feature helps Ops teams answer questions about the overall health of their operations and environments and compare it to historical trends. Each dashboard can be customized with specific indicators, including incident counts by status, the percentage increase or decrease of active incidents, and how the volume of active incidents changed over time.

BigPanda Enhances Integration with Atlassian JIRA Software and HipChat

BigPanda’s technology integration with team collaboration software company Atlassian helps Ops teams using Atlassian’s JIRA Software and HipChat products collaborate to solve more problems faster.

BigPanda enables JIRA Software users to automatically create tickets based on intelligent correlated incidents, which helps them save time, reduce ticket clutter, and get a real-time view of what’s happening so they can deliver better customer service and more reliable apps. With today’s announcement, BigPanda now supports a two-way integration with JIRA Software. This means customers who track development tasks now have the ability to automatically resolve BigPanda incidents when JIRA tickets are closed.

“Many of JIRA Software’s more than 37,000 customers are manually tracking incident response tasks,” said Dave Meyer, senior product manager, Atlassian. “BigPanda’s JIRA Software integration will connect real-time insights from BigPanda with JIRA Software’s powerful search and workflow to help people resolve incidents faster.”

Splunk and Datadog Integrations Reduce Alert Noise

BigPanda also announced it is teaming up with two DevOps pioneers – Splunk and Datadog – to reduce alert noise and provide an alternative to filtering through thousands of redundant alerts, pages and emails.

BigPanda’s powerful aggregation engine normalizes alerts from Splunk, Datadog and other monitoring systems into a single consolidated incident management center. Then, BigPanda analyzes all alert streams in real time, and it intelligently groups them into a simplified list of high-level incidents so Ops teams can detect critical issues faster.

Now available in the Splunkbase App Store, the BigPanda App for Splunk allows Ops teams to trigger BigPanda incidents from Saved-Search Alerts by using the Custom Alert Actions capability in the Splunk 6.3 release. This app adds an option to the +Add Actions list in the Splunk user interface, making it easier than ever to correlate all alerts in BigPanda.

BigPanda’s new integration with Datadog makes it easier to integrate the two systems in minutes and synchronize Datadog alerts with BigPanda incidents. BigPanda features like Environments, AutoShare rules, and Operational Analytics can now be used to help Datadog customers monitor infrastructure and reduce the time required to investigate and resolve issues.

  • GitLab Expands Authentication Capabilities, Adding Support for U2F and YubiKey Through Partnership with Yubico

New Offering Gives Developers the Ability to Securely Access Any Number of Online Services, with One Single Device

SAN FRANCISCO and PALO ALTO —June 22, 2016— Today GitLab, the open source code collaboration tool that allows developers to code, test and deploy together, expanded its authentication capabilities for the enterprises via a partnership with Yubico.  GitLab now supports the FIDO Universal 2nd Factor (U2F) protocol for user authentication with the added layer of hardware security from YubiKey. U2F changes the game for online authentication as it uses public key cryptography and has built-in support to prevent phishing. This higher level of authentication enables organizations and individual developers to maintain the security of their servers, code, sites, and more from a single source.

With the steady rise of new devices and the growing capabilities of existing ones, the average user logs into networks, applications, or platforms from a variety of different devices. While device flexibility is great from a user perspective, it represents significant security challenges for organizations and developers. Each new access point makes it tougher to fend off malicious attacks particularly phishing while maintaining the integrity of accounts and systems.

GitLab’s VP of Engineering, Stan Hu, said, “GitLab and Yubico recognize the importance of security and are excited to be able to provide additional security measures for GitLab customers. GitLab has long supported two-factor authentication via a mobile application, but adding U2F support with YubiKey now provides an additional level of security. GitLab customers will have the option to choose which method of authentication is best for them.”

The new YubiKey offering reduces the number of steps coders must take to access their accounts, while maintaining usability and providing secure authentication with just a touch of the YubiKey. With U2F, GitLab customers can now authenticate by inserting their YubiKey into the USB port when prompted. The customer activates their YubiKey by simply pressing the button on the device, then instantly, the YubiKey securely authenticates the user into the account.

The same U2F YubiKey that works with GitLab also works for logging into a growing number of other services, including Google, Dropbox, and Dashlane, without any personal data or encryption secrets shared between service providers. With YubiKeys, there are no drivers or client software to install.

Jerrod Chong, VP of Solutions Engineering at Yubico, says, “GitLab is making a strong statement with their support for U2F, providing their user community with the highest level of account security by enabling YubiKey’s U2F capabilities.”

Stan Hu, GitLab’s VP of Engineering, said, “We are committed to securing our user’s work with proven, seamless solutions. Supporting YubiKey for two-factor authentication is a logical step towards that goal.”

  • BlazeMeter Contributes Latest Developments to the JMeter Ecosystem

BlazeMeter speeds up testing for JMeter users with a Step-by-Step Debugger and Keyboard Shortcuts, demonstrates open source test orchestration tool Taurus at Velocity Conference

SAN FRANCISCO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–BlazeMeter, the leader in open source-based continuous performance testing, today released a number of key contributions to the JMeter community, helping to advance JMeter from a scripting and load generation tool to a more complete environment where practitioners can develop, debug and execute tests.

“We’ve heard from developers that several common functionalities could be improved, so we worked on capabilities that make for an easier and more productive experience with JMeter.”

Leading the list is the BlazeMeter Step-by-Step Debugger, which simplifies and expedites script development in JMeter 3.0 by allowing testers to debug scripts step-by-step and receive updates in real time. Testers can also skip over the step-by-step approach by setting breakpoints and running scripts until that breakpoint is reached. Now JMeter users can easily pinpoint precisely where the components are executed, understand how JMeter scoping works and, for the first time ever, view the execution order of the test plan. The debugger provides testers with a professional-grade tool to speed design and troubleshooting of sophisticated tests. A detailed guide on how to install and use the debugger is available on the BlazeMeter blog.

Additionally, a new Keyboard Shortcuts feature dramatically speeds scripting with an entirely new way to drop components into the test plan. Instead of manually inspecting menus to find components, JMeter users can select the command key with another predefined key, enabling them to build entire test plans with a series of keystrokes. As a core JMeter feature, Keyboard Shortcuts is available to all users by default when they install JMeter 3.0. For a demo of this and other helpful new features in JMeter 3.0, view our recent webcast: What’s New in JMeter 3.0 and Q&A.

BlazeMeter’s Chief Scientist Andrey Pokhilko also released the Plugins Manager — a faster and easier way to work with JMeter Plugins. Historically, installing and removing plugins by downloading file bundles was a complex and manual process that often resulted in menus cluttered with extra plugins. The Plugins Manager eliminates these issues by enabling JMeter users to install and remove plugins through one simple user interface.

“We’re always looking to develop new features that support the core JMeter community,” said Pokhilko. “We’ve heard from developers that several common functionalities could be improved, so we worked on capabilities that make for an easier and more productive experience with JMeter.”

“The BlazeMeter Step-by-Step Debugger adds professional-grade power to test development and speeds onboarding of developers and seasoned test practitioners to JMeter,” said Dave Karow, Director of Product Marketing at BlazeMeter. “Andrey’s Plugins Manager reduces complexity and the Keyboard Shortcut feature enables power users to create test plans in the blink of an eye. These features come directly from our engagement with hundreds of enterprise customers who want to move faster and more confidently with JMeter as they distribute responsibility for performance testing out to agile teams, closer to where development occurs.”

BlazeMeter’s open source initiatives extend beyond the scope of its JMeter contributions. The company continues to support and enhance the open source project Taurus, which offers an automation friendly framework for continuous testing using JMeter and other leading open source tools.

At Velocity Santa Clara 2016, Pokhilko will reveal how Taurus can bring load testing up a level by adding a consistent layer of automation and a wider scope of functionality to existing open source tools. Specifically, he will be presenting ‘Take Your Load Testing Up a Notch With Open Source Tools’ at 2:10 p.m. on Thursday, June 23. For more details, click on the link here.

  • VictorOps Announces the Incident Automation Engine, Further Advancing Innovation in Real-Time Incident Management

VictorOps helps companies bypass traditional Network Operations Centers by proactively routing alerts, transforming data, and solving problems using end-to-end automation

BOULDER, Colo. – June 22, 2016 – VictorOps, the real-time incident management company for DevOps teams, announced the Incident Automation Engine, a set of cutting-edge features for on-call teams to automate their way to faster mean time to resolution(MTTR) through use of intelligent alerts, sophisticated routing, and smarter system outputs.

Unlike other incident management tools that mainly focus on triaging alerts and notifications, the VictorOps Incident Automation Engine provides unsurpassed control and insight throughout the entire incident lifecycle via a combination of intelligent system inputs and actionable outputs. The Incident Automation Engine automatically quiets the noise of unnecessary alerts, delivers remediation solutions alongside alerts, and provides visibility into and documentation of all communications and actions that occurred during an incident. Additionally, through the use of outbound webhooks, the entire VictorOps solution can now be configured to send data to other tools in real-time, enabling users to do everything from automatically fixing standard issues to customizing dashboards.

“More and more often, the best way to speed organizational innovation is by enabling developers to move quickly,” said Todd Vernon, VictorOps CEO and co-founder. “When it comes to a company’s uptime, this same concept applies. Today valuable time is lost with archaic alerting systems and manual processes. The [Incident Automation] Engine now becomes a foundation to automate out these inefficiencies, gain clearer access to actionable information and continuously evaluate and improve the inputs driving on-call processes.”

Key features of the Incident Automation Engine include:

    • Alert Transformations– Quiet unactionable alerts and automatically route specific alerts to the correct team members.
    • Alert Annotations– Automatically append alerts with runbooks, monitoring graphs and other relevant information, giving the alert recipient immediate remediation steps.
    • Outbound Webhooks– Extend VictorOps platform data into other systems and integrate VictorOps incidents into other service dashboards.
    • API– Leverage the VictorOps API to extend VictorOps to existing legacy tools and reporting systems.
    • Post-Mortem Report Generator– Automatically pull a snapshot of all activities (alerts, conversations and remediation actions) associated with an outage. Easily use this data to report on SLAs and facilitate team retrospectives.

VictorOps was one of five companies Gartner featured as a 2016 “Cool Vendor” in DevOps. The Incident Automation Engine is one of the many reasons for this recognition. Its purpose is to support on-call teams as they learn from each incident, providing them with the means to continuously improve and evolve their processes.

“Visibility at velocity is very important to us so engineers know what needs to be addressed from problems identified in production,” said Mike Perttula, DevOps Specialist, Signiant. “[The] VictorOps Incident Automation Engine is allowing us to inform more team members in a timely fashion. We are lowering our MTTR and increasing the reach of our incident alerting audience without waking up everyone for the wrong reasons.”

“With the Incident Automation Engine, our customers are now better empowered to resolve and even prevent future incidents, thereby protecting revenue loss, driving customer satisfaction, and maintaining brand reputation,” said Vernon.

The functionality delivered as part of the Incident Automation Engine is now available in the Enterprise edition of the VictorOps product. For more information about the Incident Automation Engine, visit VictorOps.
