  • Open-Source Cloudify Delivers Multi-Stack Interoperability for Kubernetes & Robust Security, Bridging the Gap Between Application & Network Virtualization

Version 4.2 now shipping with native Kubernetes provider, better user governance, multi-tenancy, SSO, and new Insights-as-a-Service

AUSTIN, Texas // KUBECON AND CLOUDNATIVECON // December 6, 2017—Orchestration, a market estimated to grow to US$14 billion by 2021, is emerging as a preferred path to cloud management for service providers and enterprises looking for self-service application and network provisioning and optimal resource utilization and control. The latest version of the open-source Cloudify orchestration software makes big strides toward giving both major user groups—service providers and enterprises—the features they need to orchestrate the most demanding cloud applications and network services without compromising on robust security.

Cloudify is an open-source orchestration platform and a widely deployed, production-grade implementation of the TOSCA standard. It offers management and automation of both applications and network services in heterogeneous environments, as well as distributed management through clustered management. Cloudify delivers fine-grained role management, with tenancy and access control built in to enable full control. It includes self-service capabilities enabling historical analysis of resource usage, providing deep and intelligent insights about performance and cost.

Cloudify 4.2  launches today at Kubecon/CloudNativeCon in Austin with features to serve enterprises and service providers looking to make the transition to virtualized and cloud-native infrastructure. Organizations are now able to do so without compromising on security and regulatory demands.

The new version delivers this with features such as:

    –   production-grade, role-based access control (RBAC)

    –  single sign-on (SSO)

    –  lightweight directory access protocol (LDAP) integration

    –   multi-tenancy, standard support through the pure ARIA TOSCA plugin

    –   interoperability and cross-cloud functionality through the new Kubernetes provider plugin

    –  cost and performance optimization through the new Insights-as-a-Service

    New Highlights

    –  Integration with Kubernetes // Cloudify 4.2 makes Kubernetes, the default open-source Linux container management software, interoperable with the rest of the world through a native multi-stack and multi-cloud provider written in Go.

    –  Security features // The new version offers hardened multi-cloud security with RBAC and enhanced network security through advanced multi-tenancy, security assertion markup language (SAML) authentication and LDAP support, including the popular SSO platform Okta.

    –  Governance and control features // Cloudify 4.2 offers improved cloud governance with RBAC, which helps reduce the risks of issues like data breaches, data being written to the wrong availability zone or cost overruns. Cloudify orchestration technology sits between the application and the infrastructure. This enables control of not only who gets access to which resources but also how resources are used for specific applications. Templates are available for different roles depending on the degree of access and control needed for the business case.

    • The new Insights-as-a-service provides utilization and cost analysis allowing IT operators to gain better control and visibility over the overall utilization per user and application deployment.
    • UI features // An improved user interface is now open sourced into the community edition, offering templates and custom widgets, the Composer (a drag-and-drop interface for creating YAML templates) baked in, and two-way template Composer editing.

The Importance of Cloud Native Support

The new version supports custom infrastructure for Kubernetes, offering the ability to reimplement without rewriting multiple instances on the same cluster. This makes interoperability possible with other stacks and pre-existing stacks. Now everyone—and not just developers—can manage complex Kubernetes clusters.

Some additional real-world examples of how the Cloudify Kubernetes plugin is being deployed:

    ●  Service function chaining of virtual network functions (VNFs) such as URL filtering, UTM, vRouter and vFirewall connecting to applications running on Kubernetes

    ●  Cloud Native Hybrid Stack use case—running a Quagga router on Kubernetes, and a VNF firewall running on a Linux virtual machine (VM) on OpenStack

    ●  Instantiating VMs on Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Google Cloud Platform (GCP) via Cloudify Manager, and leveraging the Kubernetes plugin to run workloads on Google Container Engine (GKE)

Enterprises and service providers are transitioning into cloud and adopting common frameworks and practices to manage their cloud services. Nati Shalom, co-founder and CTO of Cloudify observes, “There are still many challenges to make those frameworks interoperable with existing environments and allow better control and governance. Cloudify 4.2 comes with Kubernetes providers that allow interoperability with multi-cloud and multi-stack environments, new security features that allow better control as to how the cloud infrastructure is used, and new insights-as-a-service that adds utilization and cost insights. It also improves network security by allowing applications to create their own private network and firewall rules as part of the application lifecycle.”

    Partner Quotes

“Service providers who want to transition to NFV and fully virtualized environments are seeing challenges with adopting modern cloud practices while integrating existing network infrastructure and delivering carrier-grade solutions. Cloudify’s integration with pure TOSCA and Kubernetes coupled with Tech Mahindra’s end-to-end solutions, being applied in the real-world at leading telcos such as Proximus, has built a robust partnership with a unique capability to deliver a carrier-grade solution today, while maintaining future compatibility to integrate with industry standards such as ONAP tomorrow.”

—Manish Singh, Network Services, Tech Mahindra

“The relationship between Aptira and Cloudify began focused on a specific project to maximize the utilization and reduce costs of a large carrier’s MPLS network. The success of this project enabled Aptira to expand upon this into additional projects including IT, involving the new Cloudify capabilities for supporting Kubernetes and hardened security on OpenStack and VMware. The new support being shipped will enable additional adoption of the open orchestration concept, bridging the networking world and IT through a common orchestration platform.”

  • Esprezzo Announces Launch of Programmable Middleware for Blockchain

The platform’s blockchain-agnostic, serverless approach makes it possible for developers of any skillset to build data-rich applications on blockchain

Esprezzo, the Boston- and San Francisco-based startup democratizing access to blockchain development, announced today the launch of its programmable middleware enabling front-end and back-end engineers to build data-rich applications interoperable with blockchain.

Today, development on blockchain is currently limited by slow data read and write times, inaccessibility for front-end engineers caused by its decentralized nature and the fact that the technology requires extensive knowledge of low-level software languages such as Go, C# and C++.

Esprezzo offers engineers of all skillsets a solution to these barriers. The blockchain-as-a-service offering doesn’t require knowledge of low-level software languages, making it usable for both front-end and back-end engineers. And, with a middleware that is 100 percent integrated with the Ethereum Protocol and GraphQL, Esprezzo’s MainNet will allow developers to control their applications’ data across a variety of blockchains and networks.

“As blockchain continues to rise as the next major foundational technology, the demand for blockchain developers is increasing rapidly – yet the supply is not keeping up,” said Remy Carpinito, CEO and co-founder, Esprezzo. “We are building Esprezzo to activate a larger pool of developers, empower them and provide the tools needed to focus on front-end applications rather than the underlying architecture.”

The Esprezzo team previously built CampusTap, a private career networking platform launched in 2013 that currently serves 60 organizations and manages over 1 million user accounts in education institutions and corporations worldwide. In 2018, CampusTap’s entire backend infrastructure will be migrated to blockchain to serve as the hallmark data-rich application built on blockchain using the Esprezzo platform.

    About Esprezzo

Esprezzo is a Boston-based and San Francisco-based startup founded by Remy Carpinito and Alan Wilhelm, the founding team of CampusTap.

Esprezzo’s goal is to make it seamless for enterprises and modern product developers to build data-rich web and mobile products that are interoperable with blockchain technology. Our middleware allows for the exchange of private and public data from private enterprise applications to smart contracts on the Esprezzo MainNet and/or the Public Ethereum network.

  • Microsoft DevOps Partner of the Year InCycle allies with Redgate Software

Cambridge UK, Tuesday, 28 November 2017– Redgate, the Cambridge UK based software company known for its portfolio of database development tools, has added a prestigious consultancy to its list of globally recognized partners. InCycle Software is one of North America’s leading software consulting firms and was recently declared Global Partner of the Year for DevOps by Microsoft.

The announcement continues and strengthens Redgate’s relationship with Microsoft, and follows the integration of Redgate’s Data Tools in the installer of the Enterprise version of Visual Studio 2017.

The tools enable application developers to write code for the database inside their favorite IDE and include the database in DevOps, and were introduced by Microsoft in response to an increasing recognition that the database cannot be a bottleneck in the DevOps process.

This became even more important when it was revealed in Redgate’s widely quoted State of Database DevOps report that 60% of application developers are also responsible for developing the database.

The increasing desire to use DevOps in application development to speed up the deployment of changes, updates and improvements, while at the same time reducing the change failure rate, means the database can no longer be left behind. It has to be included in the same processes, preferably by plugging into and integrating with the systems already in place, so that it becomes a natural part of DevOps, rather than a hindrance to it.

This is what prompted the initial conversation between InCycle and Redgate. InCycle offers professional services based on the Microsoft platform, and most of its customers use Visual Studio. For the last 15 years, it has been helping its customers deliver modern applications, and leverage Azure, big data and DevOps to achieve new levels of success.

As Martin Rajotte, InCycle President comments: “The partnership with Redgate is the next natural step for us. Way back in 2002, we were talking to customers about Application Lifecycle Management. The conversation has now moved on to DevOps, and Redgate Data Tools inside Visual Studio support DevOps for the database. That helps us deliver more value to our customers because we can demonstrate how they can develop their database alongside their application.”

A notable first step in the relationship is that InCycle customers can use an online database DevOps maturity assessment tool developed by Redgate to better understand how advanced their current database development processes are. After answering some questions about their development environment and practices, they receive a report from Redgate and InCycle that gives recommendations for improvements, and shows how their maturity level compares with their peers.

With its huge well of experience in helping companies introduce modern DevOps practices, InCycle is then in place to advise the best way for those recommendations to be implemented.

Cass Lloyd, Regional Partner Manager at Redgate, concludes. “This is a natural step for us too. We’ve developed a complete portfolio of SQL Server development tools that enable companies and organizations to introduce DevOps for the database. Sometimes, though, they need a helping hand along the way, because it means introducing new processes, so we’re increasingly working with expert partners like InCycle.”

Redgate now has a worldwide network of partners and is continuing to research and develop further ways to make adopting database DevOps easier and smoother.

  • Capital One Launches Critical Stack Enterprise Container Orchestration Platform Beta

Powered by Capital One, the new platform is designed to fuel enterprise adoption of containers at scale

McLean, Va. (Nov. 21, 2017) — Capital One Financial Corp. today announced the beta release of Critical Stack, a container orchestration platform designed to help enterprises adopt containerized infrastructure at scale in the cloud.

The use of containers and microservices is on the rise as more organizations recognize the automation, speed and cost savings benefits of modern computing infrastructure. A recent Gartner report predicted that by 2020, more than 50 percent of global enterprises will be running containerized applications in production, up from less than 20 percent today.

For large enterprises, especially those in highly regulated industries, security and compliance considerations are paramount. Critical Stack, powered by Capital One, was designed to help enterprises more fully automate compliance and security controls, as well as orchestrate streamlined deployment and configuration of apps and infrastructure in the cloud.

“With Critical Stack, our goal is to help more organizations take advantage of the benefits of containerized infrastructure without sacrificing security, compliance, and simplicity,” said Liam Randall, co-founder of Critical Stack Inc, who joined Capital One through an acquisition in 2016. “At Capital One, we have standardized on microservices and containerization in the cloud and recognize the needs that large enterprises face as they modernize their computing infrastructure. We believe that Critical Stack will help other companies adopt containers at scale.”

Critical Stack is a standalone container orchestration platform that is compatible with open source container management systems such as Google’s Kubernetes.

“What Critical Stack means to the enterprise is that the application is the first-class citizen,” said Dustin Webber, co-founder and CTO of Critical Stack. “Critical Stack is designed to empower developers to spend less time setting up and operating container infrastructure and more time solving the hard problems that really matter.”

As the first U.S. bank to move its core processing to the public cloud, Capital One has adopted a cloud-first approach to software development, as well as standardizing on RESTful APIs, microservices, and containerization in the cloud.

More information about Critical Stack and how to sign up for the beta is available at https://criticalstack.com/.

  • Platform9 Expands Managed Kubernetes Support For Enterprise Environments, Enabling Cluster Management Across Datacenters and Clouds

Leader in Kubernetes-as-a-service now provides single pane across bare metal, enterprise Linux distributions, VMware vSphere, Nutanix AHV, Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Nov. 17, 2017 /PRNewswire/ — Platform9, the next-generation open cloud company, today announced immediate availability of Platform9 Managed Kubernetes support for single pane management across bare metal, enterprise Linux distributions, VMware vSphere, Nutanix AHV, Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform environments. This expanded support, made possible by Platform9’s unique SaaS architecture and significant engineering investments in hybrid cloud management in the past year, enables enterprises to simplify development and operations of applications using Kubernetes as the hybrid cloud platform.

Enterprise CIOs face the challenge of managing an increasingly fragmented infrastructure landscape across data center technologies such as VMware vSphere, enterprise Linux and the KVM hypervisor, and Nutanix’s emerging Acropolis Hypervisor; and the major public cloud providers Amazon, Azure and Google. The resulting silos differ in their user experience, governance controls and APIs which creates a chaotic consumption experience and ultimately, slows down the realization of a true hybrid cloud architecture that the enterprise can standardize on.

Kubernetes promises to address this problem, since it offers a cloud agnostic consumption experience and has integrations with several of these environments. However, traditional ways of deploying Kubernetes – such as using a software installer – implement Kubernetes in an infrastructure specific manner. As a result, Kubernetes itself becomes remains confined as part of the infrastructure silo. In addition, many Kubernetes solutions are greatly limited in their support for multiple infrastructure platforms. Platform9’s SaaS architecture decouples the Kubernetes management plane from infrastructure that is used to deploy clusters and as a result, Kubernetes can be used to provide a single pane management experience across any infrastructure, eliminating silos. Additionally, Platform9’s experience of integrating OpenStack with these infrastructure technologies has accelerated the path for Managed Kubernetes to support all of these integrations.

“Even after all public cloud providers support Kubernetes, a management problem still exists — on average, a typical large enterprise is fragmented with use of at least four different on-premises and public cloud environments at some scale,” said Sirish Raghuram, co-founder and CEO at Platform9. “To address this problem, enterprises need an infrastructure agnostic solution that integrates deeply with these platforms, but exposes an elegant consumption interface to developers. With today’s announcement, Platform9 is providing enterprises the freedom to adopt Kubernetes-based cloud native applications along with a hybrid/multi-cloud architecture without being locked in by existing infrastructure investments.”

With Platform9 Managed Kubernetes support for single pane management, enterprises will benefit from:

    • A single, consistent cloud experience to deploy, manage and consume cloud native applications across all major public and private cloud infrastructure
    • Increased productivity since developers and DevOps can focus on solving core business problems while reducing time wasted on managing fragmented environments
    • Consistent workflows and policy controls to ensure governance of applications
    • Enhanced efficiency by reducing redundant investments in infrastructure
    • Reduced operational complexity in managing hybrid clouds

Since Platform9 announced general availability of Managed Kubernetes in January 2017, the product has experienced significant growth and momentum. Most recently, the company’s Managed Kubernetes solution was recognized as a 2017 CRN Tech Innovator Award winner in the Container Technology category. Customers added to the roster include Cadence Design, CSPi and Crunch. In addition, the company announced that it is managing more than 50 enterprise cloud regions with Managed Kubernetes since general availability earlier in the year.

  • Chef Announces New Compliance and Application Automation Capabilities for AWS

Habitat Builder support for Amazon EC2 ease cloud transition for global enterprises

SEATTLE — November 16, 2017 — Chef, the leader in Continuous Automation, today announced new capabilities designed to further accelerate enterprise adoption of Amazon Web Services (AWS) by addressing users’ compliance and containerized application lifecycle control concerns. Building on AWS OpsWorks for Chef Automate announced in 2016, new functionality includes Chef Automate with integrated compliance.

“As enterprises accelerate their migration to the cloud, working with DevOps leaders like Chef is crucial,” said Scott Wiltamuth, Vice President of AWS Dev and Management Tools, Amazon Web Services, Inc. “Chef is providing valuable on-ramps for enterprise customers who are migrating workloads from on-premises data centers to AWS. We are pleased to see Chef’s compliance-as-code capabilities as part of AWS OpsWorks for Chef Automate.”

“When AWS launched OpsWorks with Chef Automate we immediately jumped on that,” said Eric Schneider, CTO of Verisk. “It is one less component that we had to worry about. The experts at Chef and AWS are worrying about it for us, and that allows us to focus what is important for us and our customers.”

OpsWorks for Chef Automate provides a fully-managed Chef server and suite of automation tools. These tools give users workflow automation for continuous deployment and automated testing for compliance and security, along with a user interface for visibility into nodes and their status. OpsWorks for Chef Automate is completely compatible with tooling and cookbooks from the Chef community and automatically registers new nodes with users’ Chef servers.

    New capabilities announced today:

    • Application teams can now package applications with Habitat Builder and output them natively to EC2 Container Registry (Amazon ECR). This enables easy application automation and workload migration to Amazon EC2 Container Service (ECS).
    • Amazon OpsWorks for Chef Automate now includes the latest capabilities of Chef Automate, providing a compliance-as-code solution. This enables customers to scan their entire infrastructure for security risks and compliance issues, generate reports classified by severity and impact levels and build automated testing into their deployment pipelines.
    • Chef is now a member of the AWS Public Sector Partner Program, and Chef Automate is now available in the AWS GovCloud Marketplace and AWS Marketplace for the U.S. Intelligence Community.

“Chef and AWS share a commitment to give users the most complete automation capabilities, whether they are migrating workloads to AWS, operating those workloads or building new cloud native applications,” said Chef CEO Barry Crist. “We share a commitment to enable organizations to deliver software faster, more efficiently and with less risks. We look forward to building on our collaboration at AWS re:Invent 2017, and to continuing to address our mutual customers most pressing infrastructure and application needs.”

For a demonstration of these new capabilities please visit booth number 224 at AWS re:Invent, being held in Las Vegas November 27 – December 1.
